Food sensitivities and intolerance are potentially serious problems resulting in irritated skin, coat, and ear conditions or even gastrointestinal upset. Dogs with food sensitivity or intolerance, also called adverse reactions to food, typically experience an abnormal response to the protein in the food.

If your dog suffers from adverse reactions to food, feeding the right food is even more important. Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians developed Prescription Diet z/d clinical nutrition, specially formulated to support your dog's skin and food sensitivities. In fact, z/d is clinically proven nutrition to help avoid adverse reactions to food.

Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine is a complete and balanced food that provides all the nutrition your dog needs. Please consult your veterinarian for further information on how our Prescription Diet foods can help your dog continue to enjoy a happy and active life. Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Canine provides complete and balanced nutrition for the maintenance of adult dogs.

Key Ingredients:

  • Hydrolyzed Chicken Liver:This high-quality protein source is broken down into smaller, easily digestible components, reducing the likelihood of adverse reactions in dogs with food sensitivities.

  • Vitamin E Supplement:A crucial antioxidant that supports skin health and helps combat potential oxidative damage.

  • Potassium Citrate:Helps maintain a healthy urinary tract and promotes balanced nutrition.

  • Niacin, Folic Acid, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate, and Pyridoxine Hydrochloride:Essential B vitamins that contribute to your dog's overall health.

  • Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C):A key nutrient supporting the immune system and improving skin health.

  • Magnesium Oxide and Potassium Chloride:Essential minerals for maintaining proper bodily functions.

  • Copper Sulfate and Ferrous Sulfate:Important minerals for overall health and well-being.

  • Calcium Iodate:A source of iodine promoting thyroid health in dogs.

This dog food is carefully crafted to address food sensitivities, which can manifest as adverse reactions or abnormal responses in some dogs. The hydrolyzed chicken liver minimizes the risk of gastrointestinal upset, making it an ideal choice for dogs prone to such issues. The inclusion of soybean oil provides essential fatty acids for a healthy coat.

Hill's Prescription Diet z/d is a complete and balanced food, ensuring your dog receives all the necessary nutrients to thrive. For dogs experiencing potentially serious problems due to food sensitivities, this diet offers a solution to alleviate discomfort and promote optimal health.

As with any specialized diet, it is advisable to consult with your veterinarian before introducing Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Skin/Food Sensitivities Canned Dog Food to your dog's routine. Refrigerate unused portions for freshness, and let your dog enjoy a diet tailored to their unique needs.

What Does Zd Mean in Dog Food?
Answer

The Z/D in the Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Skin/Food Sensitivities Canned Dog Food is from the hydrolyzate. An allergic patient requires proteins that their immune system has never seen. The hydrolyzed proteins are the basis for such foods. The hydrolysis of the proteins helps break the protein into smaller forms that are undetectable by the immune system. Therefore these are ideal for pets who are prone to food allergies.

Is Hills Hydrolyzed Zd?
Answer

Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Skin/Food Sensitivities Canned Dog Food is a hydrolyzed protein diet. This means that the nutritional benefits of the protein are made available to your pets via the hydrolyzed protein forms. The food also has carbohydrates, fats, and essential minerals along with hydrolyzed protein. Enzymatic hydrolysis or the process of chemical digestion can help break the binds of the proteins that hold up the building blocks of the compound. Once this happens proteins are found as amino acids. The gastrointestinal systems can absorb these readily without having the immunity system to react or be allergic to the proteins. This is especially helpful for pets that suffer from various food allergies.

Do You Need a Prescription for Hill's Prescription Dog Food?
Answer

Yes, you must have a veterinarian prescription for ordering Hillโ€™s prescription foods. But you must not worry if you do not have one, as the PetCareRX team will contact your veterinarian and help you out with it. Generally, the pet stores and veterinarians do not sell these prescription diets without a valid veterinarian prescription as it could look promotional and biased for the manufacturers. Also, these prescribed diets have some medicinal values associated with them, and hence involving a veterinarian is a good option. Misuse and the wrong quantity of diets can also worsen the health conditions of your pet.

Is Hill's Z D Grain Free?
Answer

Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Skin/Food Sensitivities Canned Dog Food is not a grain-free food for dogs. It has corn starch along with other ingredients in its formulation. The key component however is the Hydrolyzed Chicken Liver. It is the chief source of protein for the feed. The feedโ€™s main function is to aid those pets who are otherwise not able to have a healthy nutritious meal because of their allergic conditions. You can however consult your veterinarian before you start the administration of such specialized food.

Is Z D Ok for Puppies?
Answer

Every diet food is designed as per the need of the dogโ€™s body. Administering one for the other may prove to be fetal or not aid the dog in any way. This is specifically true when an adult diet with specific nutrient compositions is administered to a puppy. The puppy in its growth stage needs nutrients that help build muscles and strengthen its bones. The foods that aid in growth should be picked up carefully for administering during this phase. The Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Skin/Food Sensitivities Canned Dog Food is a specialized diet for those dogs that have an allergy to particular food items. Administering such food may get your puppy devious of the essential nutrients that it needs for the growth and development of the body to reach the optimum body weight as per its breed. High energy diets are specifically recommended for puppies up to the age of 12 months.

How Much ZD Do I Give?
Answer

The administration of the right quantity of feed depends on the various factors of the dog. It includes the age, body weight, body type, levels of activity, breed, and health conditions of the dog. There are often cases of allergy or any specific ailments due to particular food items, the same needs to be taken care of while charting the feed for the dogs. It is also crucial to understand whether the dog is very active during the day or stays idle. The optimum feed ratios as mentioned by the manufacturer range from ? cup or 60g of feed to 5 ยฝ cups of feed, depending on the weight of the dog ranging from 5 pounds to 100 pounds. Alternatively, you can consult your dogโ€™s veterinarian.

What food is best for dogs with sensitive stomachs?
Answer

For dogs with sensitive stomachs, selecting a high-quality, easily digestible, and hypoallergenic diet is crucial. Choose dog foods with limited, simple ingredients, avoiding common allergens like grains, artificial fortifiers, and specific protein sources that may trigger sensitivities. Opting for novel protein sources like venison, duck, or salmon can be beneficial, as they might be less likely to cause adverse reactions. Additionally, consider specialized diets labeled as "limited ingredient," "grain-free," or "sensitive stomach formula," as they are formulated to be gentle on the digestive system. The Hills Prescription Diet z/d Skin/Food Sensitivities Canned Dog Food is also a good option. Prioritize foods with probiotics and prebiotics to promote a healthy gut microbiome and aid digestion.

Does canned dog food cause allergies?
Answer

Canned dog food, similar to other food products, can prompt allergies in certain dogs due to various ingredients commonly present in these formulations. Allergic reactions may be instigated by the inclusion of specific proteins like beef, chicken, or fish, which are common allergens for some canines. Grains like wheat or corn, commonly included in canned dog food, can potentially trigger allergic responses in sensitive dogs. Additionally, artificial additives, preservatives, or fillers found in these products have the potential to cause allergic reactions in some canines.

What are some sure signs that my dog is allergic to his dog food?
Answer

Karen Purcell, an associate veterinarian from North Carolina, highlights that specific signs, when occurring concurrently, can indicate an underlying food allergy in dogs. These commonly include ear infections, foot chewing, and inflammation or redness around the anus or perianal area. Improved testing methods for food allergies exist. However, most veterinarians typically begin their investigation by introducing a limited protein diet that contains different ingredients than the current food. Concurrently, addressing conditions such as ear infections and administering medications to alleviate itching caused by allergens is part of the treatment plan now available.

What is the biggest food allergy for dogs?
Answer

The most common food allergens for dogs are typically proteins such as beef, chicken, dairy, and eggs. Among these, beef and chicken are frequently reported as primary allergens in canine diets. However, individual dogs can have different allergic reactions, and the specific allergen-causing problems can vary among them. Therefore, identifying the biggest food allergy for dogs overall might not have a definitive answer, as it can vary among different dogs.

What type of dog food will help my dog with skin problems?
Answer

David J. Shuman, a veterinary medicine graduate from the University of California, stresses the need to identify the type of skin problem affecting your dog. This initial step is crucial for understanding your dog's specific skin issue. If the issue is allergies, the subsequent step involves determining the underlying cause. Allergic skin reactions in dogs generally stem from three main causes: environmental factors (like weeds, and pollens), parasites (such as fleas), and food. In cases concerning allergic reactions to food, Dr. Shuman recommends initiating a strict hypoallergenic food trial. Various brands like Hills, Purina, Royal Canin, and Blue Buffalo offer diets containing hydrolyzed proteins. To conduct a proper trial, it's essential to exclusively feed one of these diets and closely monitor your dog. A crucial aspect of the feeding protocol is strict adherence, meaning no other food sources are allowed, no treats or table scraps. Feeding the diet for a month enables a more accurate evaluation, as previous allergens take about two weeks to clear from the system.

What is Z/D dog food used for?
Answer

Z/D dog food is a specialized veterinary diet often prescribed to dogs with food sensitivities, allergies, or intolerances. Z/D dog food is manufactured by Hill's Pet Nutrition. It is formulated with a limited number of highly digestible ingredients to minimize the risk of triggering allergic reactions in dogs. Z/D dog food typically contains hydrolyzed proteins. These proteins are broken down into smaller components that are less likely to provoke an immune response in dogs with food allergies. These hydrolyzed proteins are often derived from a single source, such as chicken or soy, to reduce the likelihood of triggering an allergic reaction. Z/D dog food primarily serves as an elimination diet for dogs with confirmed food allergies or intolerances. It is also used as a long-term diet option for managing these conditions in affected dogs.

Can dog food help with seasonal allergies?
Answer

Dog food alone typically cannot directly address seasonal allergies. However, specific dietary adjustments and certain ingredients in dog food might aid in managing the symptoms associated with seasonal allergies in dogs. For instance, some dog foods contain omega-3 fatty acids or antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. These nutrients have the potential to alleviate inflammation and support the immune system in dogs. Additionally, a high-quality diet that promotes overall health and strengthens the immune system may assist in reducing the severity of allergic reactions.

My dog got vertigo a week ago and couldn't feed herself. I had to and still do have to hand feed her. This food has the consistency of pate , so I can ball it up and feed her easily without making a mess. She like it a lot. Thanks to my vet and Hills ,she's doing better.

This dog food changed my fur baby's Life

My sweet Coton De Tulear I got from a rescue was having major problems with nausea and vomiting. I had tried several dog foods and tips from friends, I took her to the vet and was given a RX to try Hill's Science RX zd dog food. What a difference it has made. She is eating the food so good and it is amazing to see the difference in her. She has not had any more throwing up and also has tons of energy and is very playful now. THANKS!!

My dog would not eat this food willingly

My dog will not eat this food willingly. I have to force feed him. He hates the smell and the taste. I don't understand why it is so repulsive to my dog. He is going through a rough patch right now. Low Vitamin B12. it stopped the diarrhea but it does not seem like he is thriving on this food.

a necessary evil
VERIFIED PURCHASER

This is the only food my dog (6 year old miniature poodle) can eat without a terrible flare-up of irritable bowel syndrome. So I'm grateful that it exists. PetCareRx has the best price AND availability. Other dealers have been running out of stock. You should know that my dog really dislikes the Hills prescription food, so I have to add in an ounce of something delicious. Usually that's Weruva Steak Frites. Then, she'll eat heartily.

Our American ****** Spaniel is 2.5 years old and has always had issues with spit up bile, horrible poop issues and not liking any food we gave her. Believe me we tried everything all the way to chef prepared. My vet recommended hills prescription diet z/d and along with Apoquel. She is doing fantastic and loves eating her food and the z/d biscuit treats. Also her little nose is shiny and wet again!!

Not Consistant

My vet prescribed this for my cocker who has food and skin allergies. My biggest complaint is that the last year orders/batches of food have been inconsistent. One batch of food was usual/normal consistancy and thickness. The next was so moist it was almost runny. And the most recent batch is so dry it crumbles. I don't understand the lack of consistency in the batches of food.

Effective but my dog hates it.

My dog has a suspected food sensitivity and on this food his skin cleared up and had no itchiness, however he then grew to really dislike it. I have never seen a dog spit out food until now.

My dog has gone off this food which she used to love. Why?

One third of can am and 1/3 at night. Alternated with dry version, which was not a favorite, but loved the canned version. Recently is not happy with the can. Has there been a change with the mix? I NEED AN ALTERNATIVE PLEASE. She has not eaten her dinner tonight.

Recent formula change sent my dog to the Vet

My 4 year old Lab has been using this food for about 2 years and never had a problem. I live in Australia and recently the wet food changed and became sloppy and hard to eat and no longer a solid loaf. The quality is very poor and does not contain as much proper food. After only 11 days on this new formula my dog ended up at the vets overnight with serious intestinal issues. He was originally on this food for his protein allergies but it seems that the new formula has included a change or increase in protein. What an absolutely absurd thing to do for the type of food that it is!! Not happy at all, Terrible product.

My dogs and I are both happy now

Having tried other hypoallergenic wet food that I wouldn't consider wet food this one mixes well with the rest of their food it doesn't have a revolting smell as other brands seem to have , my dogs love to eat it and they don't have flatulence issues now which is an added bonus but most importantly my dog that has intestinal issues is doing really well.

Saved my dog

My dog was allergic since 2011. Tried everything , she was having the dry food and needles to help subdue her itching. I paid expensive rates to dermatologist who did nothing but kept giving her formula which she got addicted to and still stretch like there was no tomorrow. I thought why not try Z/D wet food. Boom the news, she got better in 3 days of 6 years of pain. I thank you enough. She is happy, GREEDY and can't have enough.

Did the Formula Change Recently?
VERIFIED PURCHASER

For the past month, the canned food seems to have changed. It's very sticky and my dog is having a hard time eating it, gest stuck on his teeth, mouth, tongue. He has been eating this food for 2 years and loved it until now. He will hardly eat it now, so we have to feed more of the dry version instead.

When our dog became extremely ill, our vet recommended a low fat diet. After trying others with no success, it was suggested we try the Z/D as a last resort. He loves it! Quality food for a picky belly
VERIFIED PURCHASER

We are about two months in on the hydrolyzed diet (mixed with a different brand of hydrolyzed dry food) and my dog appears to be doing well. We use the z/d as a means to help him take his pills and also use it to mix with water for extra hydration. Stools are decent and predictable on this food. I am currently having some packing problems with the cans which is being worked on with both Hill's and the retailer. Once those issues are resolved, I could rate this food five stars.

Very Sensitive Tummy!

My 6 year old mini-Rattie has been on Prescription ZD since April 2015. In addition to food sensitivity, she has lost several teeth - so typical treats are out. I take the canned ZD and put it into an ice cube tray I have that makes tiny cubes. A "pupsicle" she can eat! Thanks for your wonderful products -- I truly feel your food has saved my little Lydia's life!

This has really helped Zoey with her allegies to food

MY dog had issues and the vet, suggested this food along with medicine. She has got better and was switched to dd. She has really improved and the food was great for her, but I was feeding 3to 4 cans a day for 3 months. She is a lab and requires a lot of food. It is quite expensive for a long term treatment . I would like to keep her on it but when she gets better I will have to switch .I am buying 2 cases a week for her and that is expensive , yes this is helping and if my income was unlimited I wouldn't have a problem with the price. I did print the coupons from the website but that is a one time thing. Other than being expensive for long term care I see that the food really is helping and she likes it.
