Ultimate Guide to Galliprant Tablets

Meet the Osteoarthritis Pain Manager: Galliprant!

Galliprant is an FDA-approved and veterinarian-recommended dog medication that relieves your dog 's crippling disease of osteoarthritis (OA) acute or chronic pain and inflammation with its once-a-day flavorful chewable oral tablet. Galliprant guarantees to improve your dog 's quality of life with a happy, comfortable, and pain-free existence.

How does Galliprant work?

The most common pet medications to alleviate the pain and inflammation associated with OA are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs reduce pain, inflammation, and fever by stopping the formation of proteins needed for these to occur. NSAIDs are for short term acute pain as well as long term, chronic pain management.

Galliprant is the first of its kind: prostaglandin receptor antagonist (PRA) and a non-COX (cyclooxygenase) inhibiting NSAID. COX enzymes produce prostaglandins at sites of tissue damage caused by injury or illness. Both promote inflammation, pain, and fever. However, inhibition of their production is not part of Galliprant 's mode of action.

Anti-inflammatory NSAID Galliprantspecifically targets and blocks the EP4 receptor, which is the key mediator of canine OA pain and inflammation, while reducing the impact on the gastrointestinal tract (GI), kidney, and liver natural processes.

How is Galliprant for dogs administered?

Galliprant for dogs is administered once a day orally by a flavored chewable tablet with the Galliprant generic name and active ingredient Gapiprant The usual Galliprant dosage is 0.9 milligrams of Gapiprant per pound once a day. Most dogs can be dosed with a whole or half a tablet for effective canine OA pain relief.

As you will see in the Galliprant dose chart below, the dosage depends on the dog 's body weight:

Is Galliprant Good for Dogs?
Answer

Yes. Galliprant is an effective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat canine osteoarthritis pain. Itโ€™s an FDA-approved veterinary-recommended medication that significantly improves mobility and quality of life for dogs with osteoarthritis. The primary ingredient of Galliprant is Gapiprant, a prostaglandin receptor antagonist and non-cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor. Unlike other anti-inflammatory drugs, Galliprant doesnโ€™t work by preventing the production of COX enzymes. Instead, it targets and blocks a specific prostaglandin - the EP4 receptor. That helps reduce pain and inflammation, thereby letting your dog live a happier and healthier life with osteoarthritis. Also, itโ€™s important to note that Galliprant isnโ€™t recommended for use in dogs younger than 9 months old or weighing less than 8 lbs. Similarly, it hasnโ€™t been tested for safety in breeding, pregnant, and lactating dogs. Galliprant should be used with caution in dogs who are prone to sulfonamide drug allergies. You should never give the medicine to your dog without consulting a specialist. Make sure you talk to a licensed veterinarian and get a prescription for giving galliprant to your dog.

How Long Does It Take for Galliprant to Work in Dogs?
Answer

Galliprant starts reducing osteoarthritis pain and inflammation within the first 1 or 2 hours of administering the medication to your dog. However, just like other NSAIDs, it can take up to two weeks before you start noticing any clinical improvement in your dog. Itโ€™s a good idea to talk to your vet about the required duration of treatment with Galliprant. Also, consult your vet if your dogโ€™s condition doesnโ€™t improve even after giving the medication for a few weeks.

Does Galliprant Make Dogs Sleepy?
Answer

The most common adverse reactions of Galliprant include vomiting, decreased appetite, and diarrhea (along with blood or mucus in stool). The medicine can also cause tiredness which could make your dog lethargic and sleepy. But if your dog becomes extremely drowsy after taking Galliprant, itโ€™s recommended that you talk to your vet.

Is Galliprant Safe for Kidneys?
Answer

As long as you follow your vetโ€™s instructions while giving Galliprant to your dog, it shouldnโ€™t cause any serious problems. However, just like other anti-inflammatory drugs, long-term use of Galliprant for dogs might interfere with kidney and liver function. Itโ€™s recommended that you regularly visit your vet, and get your dogโ€™s blood and urine samples tested to prevent any serious side effects.

Which Is Better - Galliprant or Rimadyl?
Answer

Both Rimadyl and Galliprant are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that are used to treat symptoms associated with canine osteoarthritis. Rimadyl also helps with other signs of inflammation, such as fever and joint stiffness. On the other hand, Galliprant is formulated to specifically target and block the EP4 receptor - the primary cause of osteoarthritis pain and inflammation. The specific action of the drug ensures that it doesnโ€™t interfere with other housekeeping prostaglandins, thus minimizing its impact on your dogโ€™s kidney, liver, and gastrointestinal system. So, if youโ€™re looking for an effective and safe medication to treat your dogโ€™s osteoarthritis, Galliprant is a better choice. Nevertheless, itโ€™s always wiser to consult your vet and ask them to prescribe suitable medicines for your dogโ€™s condition.

How Often Can I Give My Dog Galliprant?
Answer

Galliprant is available in the form of chewable oral tablets that can be given once a day to your dog. However, the optimal dosage will depend on various factors, including your dogโ€™s age, body weight, and overall health history. itโ€™s always wiser to talk to your vet regarding the correct dosage, duration, and frequency of treatment before giving Galliprant to your dog.

Can I Give My Dog Galliprant and Tramadol Together?
Answer

Galliprant isnโ€™t known to have any contraindications with Tramadol. You can safely administer both medications to relieve canine osteoarthritis pain. It is, however, a good idea to talk to your vet before giving any of these medications to your dog.

Should Galliprant Be Given With or Without Food?
Answer

You can administer Galliprant to your dog on an empty or full stomach. But if your dog vomits or shows other signs of gastrointestinal distress after taking Galliprant on an empty stomach, make sure you give them the next dose after a meal or treat.

What should I do if my dog misses one dose of Galliprant?
Answer

It is recommended to provide the missing dosage of Galliprant to your dog as soon as you recall. If, however, the next dose is soon due, you should omit the missed one and administer the medication as usual. Galliprant should not be administered to your dog twice to make up for a missing dosage.

How should I store Galliprant?
Answer

Galliprant should be stored at room temperature between 68-77ยฐF (20-25ยฐC). It should remain dry and out of direct sunlight and should be stored in the original container. Galliprant is a prescription drug that is only to be used in dogs, therefore you should keep it away from children and pets as well.

How long does Galliprant last?
Answer

Galliprant is a once-daily medication that can provide relief from pain and inflammation related to osteoarthritis in dogs for up to 24 hours.

Can Galliprant be used to treat arthritis in humans?
Answer

No, Galliprant is a drug that has been particularly created and authorized for use in dogs to treat the pain and inflammation brought on by osteoarthritis.

Can I give my dog human NSAIDs instead of Galliprant?
Answer

No, It is not recommended to give human NSAIDs to canines without first speaking with a vet. While some human NSAIDs like ibuprofen and aspirin are occasionally used in dogs for pain relief, they can be harmful and even deadly in certain situations.

Can Galliprant be used to prevent arthritis in dogs?
Answer

No, Galliprant is not approved for the prevention of arthritis in dogs. It is a drug principally used to subside pain and inflammation brought on by osteoarthritis in canines. While it is possible that Galliprant may have some preventive effects against the development of arthritis, there is no evidence to support this use. Further, other factors such as genetics, diet, and exercise play vital roles in the development of arthritis in dogs.

Can Galliprant be used to treat other types of pain in dogs?
Answer

Galliprant is generally used to relieve the discomfort and swelling brought on by osteoarthritis in canines. Veterinarians may, however, occasionally use it to treat pain brought on by other illnesses, like soft tissue injuries or discomfort following surgery.

Can Galliprant be used for the long-term treatment of chronic pain in dogs?
Answer

Yes, Galliprant is authorized to be used in dogs with osteoarthritis to treat pain and inflammation over the long term. It is a relatively new medication and has been shown to be safe and effective for long-term use in clinical trials lasting up to 9 months. However, managing chronic pain is a complicated matter, and the best course of action will depend on the underlying reason, the degree of the pain, and the health of the particular dog.

Can Galliprant be used together with other pain drugs?
Answer

Yes, Galliprant can be used with other pain medications under the control of a veterinarian. This may be required in cases where the pain is severe or not adequately controlled with Galliprant alone. Combining different types of pain medications can be a useful strategy in pain management, as it may allow for lower doses of each medication and therefore decrease the risk of side effects.

Can Galliprant be used to treat pain in cats?
Answer

The use of Galliprant in cats is not yet authorized. Galliprant has been researched in cats, however, there is still some uncertainty regarding its safety and efficacy.

Can Galliprant cause seizures in dogs?
Answer

Galliprant is usually regarded as safe when administered in accordance with the recommended dosage and guidelines, however, there have been rare instances of seizures happening in dogs receiving the medication. Further, Galliprant's prescription instructions state that during the drug's clinical trials, a small proportion of dogs experienced seizures. The frequency of seizures was nevertheless modest, and they were frequently brief and went away on their own.

Can Galliprant cause heart problems in dogs?
Answer

While it is generally considered safe when used according to the prescribed dosage and administration instructions, there is a potential risk for heart problems in dogs receiving Galliprant. Galliprant may reduce blood flow to the heart, which in some canines may result in cardiac dysfunction.

How often should I take my dog to the veterinarian while they are taking Galliprant?
Answer

The frequency of veterinary check-ups for dogs taking Galliprant will depend on several factors, including your dog's age, overall health status, and the severity of their osteoarthritis. However, generally, it is recommended to have regular check-ups with your veterinarian every 6-12 months for dogs on long-term medications, including Galliprant.

We have seen a marked improvement in our dog's overall health since we have given her these tablets. However, we also have been giving her Dasuquin Advanced and CBD oil (600mg). We don't know which of these, if not all of them, are the reason. We don't want to take her off one to find out.

Works great! Pretty pricey
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Galliprant has made a huge difference in our 9 year old 100lb Golden's comfort. It worked within a couple of days and he enjoys running, playing ball and hops into the car like he did before. It's expensive in my opinion, almost $100/mo but, it definitely works for him. Therefore, I do highly recommend this medicine. No side effects that we've noticed.

C
Galliprant- Amazing New Drug for Canine Arthritis
VERIFIED PURCHASER

I have had 3 labs who could not take Rimadyl due to hepatotoxicity (near life threatening adverse reactions).. For labs like these -who especially who have serious ADR to carprofen - there are little alternatives for good pain relief My vet told me about Galliprant and it is a new drug and is not inexpensive. But it was worth it to see my 9 year old otherwise healthy lab regain mobility, activity and just be the great lab that she is. Galliprant was a miracle drug- my lab is now better than I ever remember. She plays, runs, jumps - even gets into trouble ... it is beautiful and well worth the cost as the health benefits are immeasurable! Thank you to my vet and the team who developed this drug- that is easy on the vital organs of dogs and especially seniors. I now have a 10 year old lab puppy! Its a beautiful thing

Amazing and Needed New Canine Pain Reliever
VERIFIED PURCHASER

This is the MOST amazing new medication - especially for dogs (and mostly Labradors) that are unable to take Rimadyl due to hepatotoxicity (severe and deadly). This is my 3rd lab who is unable to take Rimadyl and this is the first time a new drug is available with an outstanding ability to relieve pain, stiffness and mobility issues. My 10 year old lab with some chronic and seasonal arthritis is now running and playing like she is 3! She has no stomach upset or laboratory abnormalities - so this is really a miracle drug for the right patient (canine). We have been using this for about 5 months and continue to be amazed at the playfulness and sharp mental acuity of a senior lab in her 2nd childhood! Amazing and thankful!

Effective pain control, not much in mobility
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My 15 y/o dog is suffering from severe arthritis. He can't bend his front limbs much. He takes this daily and it helps monitor his pain, but hasn't done much for his mobility. We have had success with Rimadyl, as he can run and play on Rimadyl, but we decided to stick to Galliprant as it won't affect his kidneys. For pain, it works great, but it's sad to see him barely being able to walk because he's so stiff.
