Ultimate Guide to Nexgard Chewables

Meet the First Non-Topical Flea and Tick Killer: Nexgard Chewables!

Nexgard Chewables is the #1 veterinarian-approved flea and tick control medication for your dogs. Nexgard Chewables is a revolutionary monthly soft chew because it is the first oral flea and tick preventative of its kind. Nexgard Chewables ensure that your pup is in the best lovable condition that he or she can be.

How does Nexgard Chewables work?

Nexgard Chewables is a monthly flea treatment with one active ingredient Afoxolaner (the generic name for the brand name Nexgard). Afoxolaner is known to effectively prevent and control adult flea infestations before they lay eggs. It also kills ticks too!

Once the dog ingests Nexgard Chewables, the chew's ingredient actively distributes throughout the body so that when the blood-sucking parasites bite your dog, their exposure to afoxolaner kills them.

A big plus is that Nexgard Chewables (and all Nexgard products) will kill infected black-legged ticks before they can transmit Lyme Disease.

How is Nexgard Chewables administered?

Nexgard for dogs is administered orally once a month and protects your dog for the next 30 days. These are beef-flavored chewable that can be digested with or without food or water. However, if the dog vomits within the next two hours, give another full dose and try to give with food.

Nexgard Chewables Dosage Chart

Based on the weight of the dog, each dog receives a milligram amount of afoxolaner:

Weight Box Color Dosage of Afoxolaner per chew (mg)
4.0 - 10.0 lbs Orange 11.3 mg
10.1 - 24.0 lbs. Blue 28.3 mg
24.1 - 60.0 lbs Purple 68 mg
60.1 - 120.0 lbs. Red 136 mg

How Long Do Dogs Need NexGard?
Answer

The length of time that a dog needs to be treated with NexGard flea treatment can vary depending on several factors, such as the dog's age, weight, overall health, and the severity of the flea and tick problem. In general, it is recommended to administer NexGard monthly to dogs throughout the year, especially in areas where fleas and ticks are prevalent year-round. However, the frequency of treatment may be adjusted based on the dog's specific needs.

Is NexGard Waterproof?
Answer

Yes, NexGard is water-resistant, meaning it remains effective even if your dog gets wet from rain or swimming. However, excessive exposure to water, such as frequent swimming or bathing, may reduce the effectiveness of the product.

What Months Do Dogs Need NexGard?
Answer

If you live in an area where fleas and ticks are present all year long, your veterinarian may recommend giving NexGard year-round to help protect your dog from these parasites. If fleas and ticks are only a concern during certain months, such as the spring and summer, your veterinarian may recommend giving NexGard seasonally, typically from March or April through November or December.

When Not to Give Your Dog NexGard?
Answer

NexGard should not be given to dogs that have had an allergic reaction to afoxolaner or other ingredients in the medication or to dogs that are under 8 weeks of age or weigh less than 4 pounds. Pregnant or nursing dogs should also not be given NexGard. Additionally, dogs with a history of seizures or epilepsy may be at increased risk for seizures if given NexGard, and dogs with liver disease may not be able to properly metabolize the medication.

Can I Bathe My Dog After NexGard?
Answer

Yes, it is generally safe to bathe your dog after giving them NexGard. NexGard is an oral flea and ticks preventative medication absorbed into your dog's bloodstream, so bathing your dog after giving them NexGard is unlikely to affect the medication's effectiveness. However, waiting at least 24 hours after giving your dog NexGard before bathing them is important to ensure that the medication has had enough time to be fully absorbed into their system.

Is NexGard a Dewormer?
Answer

No, NexGard is not a dewormer. It is a monthly oral flea and ticks preventative medication for dogs. The active ingredient in NexGard is afoxolaner, which kills fleas and ticks on dogs. It does not treat or prevent internal parasites such as worms. If your dog has intestinal parasites or other types of worms, your veterinarian may prescribe a different medication specifically designed to treat those types of parasites.

Is NexGard Better Than Frontline?
Answer

NexGard and Frontline are popular flea and tick preventative medications for dogs, but which one is better may depend on your specific needs and preferences. Nexgard flea treatment for dogs is an oral medication taken once a month, while Frontline is a topical medication applied to the skin once a month. NexGard is effective against fleas and ticks, including the black-legged tick, which can transmit Lyme disease. Frontline is also effective against fleas and ticks, but it is not as effective against the black-legged tick as NexGard.

Where Can I Buy NexGard?
Answer

If you are looking for where to buy NexGard, you must obtain it from a licensed veterinarian or a reputable online pharmacy that requires a prescription. Moreso, you can buy NexGard online as many veterinary clinics and animal hospitals carry NexGard, and some may even sell it online through their website.

What Is The Price of NexGard?
Answer

NexGard prices can vary depending on the size of your dog and the quantity of the medication you purchase. On average, a single dose of NexGard for a 10-24 pound dog can cost around $20-$25, while a single dose for a 60-121 pound dog can cost around $25-$30. You may also find discounts and promotions from retailers or online pharmacies selling NexGard.

What Happens if My Puppy Misses a Month Of NexGard?
Answer

If your pup misses a month of NexGard for small dogs, it may leave them unprotected against fleas and ticks, putting them at risk of infestation and disease transmission. Giving your dog NexGard on a regular schedule is important to ensure continuous protection. If you miss a dose, you should give your dog the missed dose as soon as possible and then resume the regular schedule. However, if it has been more than two months since the last dose, you should consult your veterinarian before giving another dose, as they may recommend a different treatment plan.

NexGard contain afoxolaner which is absorbed into the bloodstream after ingestion. When fleas and ticks ingest blood containing afoxolaner, it causes hyperexcitation and death in these parasites.

Afoxolaner

Overviewย

Afoxolaner helps to control teak and flea infestation among dogs. After taking the medication, the compound reaches the different parts of the body as ticks or fleas attack the dog to get exposure to the drug and die while having their blood meal. The medication is also in use to treat demodectic mange and sarcoptic mange. In such cases, the recommendation of the medicine gets considered off-label.

Uses

Afoxolaner is an isoxazoline compound that helps in providing extended efficacy against tick and flea control with a single oral administration. The effectiveness of the medication substantiates higher demand for infestation treatment.ย

Special Precautions

Caution is advisable for administering the drug towpath with a history of seizures. It is also recommended to use the drug cautiously for pregnant, lactating, or breeding dogs. The medication can last for 4 to 6 weeks.

The GABA-mediated changes in mammals are due to the behavioral and neurological effects of the medication. The binding of the receptors is possible for the medication as per the Committee for Medicinal Products for Veterinary Use.

Mechanism of Action

The medication belongs to the isoxazoline chemical compound group and acts as an acaricide and insecticide. The actions of the medicine as an antagonist for neurotransmitter GABA receptors help to carry out its specific functions. The chloride channel modulators bind to the target sites and block before or after synaptic transfer of chloride irons through the cell membranes. The hyperexcitation of prolonged exposure to the medication leads to an aggravated activity of the center of the system, leading to the death of parasites. Competitive toxicity study The impact of afoxolaner occurs on the GABA-gated chloride channels via sites different from cyclodienes.

Known Drug Interactions

The prevailing research data does not showcase any drug interaction with other medications. However, it is advisable to inform your veterinarian about any medication your pet is currently taking. It will help to avoid any chance of drug interaction.

Brand/Generic Equivalents

Nexgard

In a well-controlled US field study, which included a total of 333 households and 615 treated dogs (415 administered afoxolaner; 200 administered active control), no serious adverse reactions were observed with NexGard.

Over the 90-day study period, all observations of potential adverse reactions were recorded. The most frequent reactions reported at an incidence of > 1% within any of the three months of observations are presented in the following table. The most frequently reported adverse reaction was vomiting. The occurrence of vomiting was generally selflimiting and of short duration and tended to decrease with subsequent doses in both groups. Five treated dogs experienced anorexia during the study, and two of those dogs experienced anorexia with the first dose but not subsequent doses.

Dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older weighing 4 pounds of body weight or greater

NexGard can be administered with or without food. Care should be taken that the dog consumes the complete dose, and treated animals should be observed for a few minutes to ensure that part of the dose is not lost or refused. If it is suspected that any of the dose has been lost or if vomiting occurs within two hours of administration, redose with another full dose. If a dose is missed, administer NexGard and resume a monthly dosing schedule.

Flea Treatment and Prevention: Treatment with NexGard may begin at any time of the year. In areas where fleas are common year-round, monthly treatment with NexGard should continue the entire year without interruption. To minimize the likelihood of flea reinfestation, it is important to treat all animals within a household with an approved flea control product.

We have been using Nexgard Chewables for 6 years now and our Beagle loves them! He thinks they are treats and very easily takes these every month. Nexgard works so much better and we have not had any issues with fleas since putting him on this chewable, we HIGHLY recommend this product.
