Does Prescription Urinary Cat Food Work?
Answer

Prescription urinary cat food can be effective for managing urinary issues in cats. It's specially formulated to address specific urinary health concerns. These diets often contain ingredients that support urinary tract health and reduce the risk of urinary crystals or stones. Veterinarians may prescribe them as part of a treatment plan for cats with urinary tract infections, urinary blockages, or other urinary issues. While prescription urinary cat food can be beneficial, it's essential to follow your veterinarian's recommendations carefully. It may need to be combined with other treatments or dietary modifications for optimal results.

What Cat Food Dissolves Urinary Crystals?
Answer

Certain cat foods are formulated to dissolve urinary crystals. These diets typically have controlled levels of minerals. They aim to create an environment in the cat's urine that prevents crystal formation and encourages dissolution. Veterinary-prescribed urinary care diets are often recommended for cats with urinary issues. These diets may contain ingredients like DL-methionine to acidify urine and prevent crystal formation. It's crucial to follow your veterinarian's recommendations when selecting a cat food for urinary health. Regular monitoring and check-ups are necessary to assess the effectiveness of the chosen diet and make any necessary adjustments. Additionally, providing access to fresh water and promoting adequate hydration can also support urinary health in cats.

Is Chicken Good for Cats?
Answer

Chicken can be a good protein source for cats. It provides essential nutrients like protein and amino acids. However, it's essential to ensure the chicken is cooked thoroughly and boneless. Raw chicken can pose risks of bacterial contamination. Additionally, cats should not be fed chicken bones as they can splinter and cause injuries. When feeding chicken to cats, it's important to incorporate it as part of a balanced diet. Offering a variety of protein sources is beneficial for meeting cats' nutritional needs. Overall, chicken can be a healthy and nutritious addition to a cat's diet when prepared and served appropriately.

Is Urinary Care Cat Food OK for All Cats?
Answer

Urinary Care cat food is not suitable for all cats. It's specifically formulated for cats with urinary tract issues. This type of food typically contains ingredients to promote urinary health and prevent issues like urinary crystals or stones. However, healthy cats without urinary issues may not benefit from this specialized diet. Feeding urinary care cat food to healthy cats could lead to imbalances in their diet. It's essential to consult with a veterinarian before making any dietary changes for your cat. They can assess your cat's health and recommend an appropriate diet tailored to their specific needs. Providing a balanced diet that meets all of your cat's nutritional requirements is essential for their overall health and well-being.

Once a Cat Is on an Urinary Diet, Can Other Wet Foods Be Given?
Answer

According to Beverly Littlefield, a cat owner, once a cat is on a urinary diet, other wet foods can be given. Littlefield's male cat was prescribed a urinary diet of both dry kibble and canned wet food for better hydration. Although the cat didn't like the prescribed canned food, Littlefield substituted it with the Purina One Urinary Focus brand, which the cat enjoyed. Littlefield mentions that Purina also offers a prescription diet in both dry and canned forms. Despite having four other cats, they all willingly eat the same food without any urinary problems recurring over the past eight years. Littlefield advises consulting with a vet for any questions or concerns regarding a cat's diet. Additionally, Littlefield recommends placing water bowls away from the food bowl area and using multiple water bowls around the home. She also suggests considering a cat fountain to increase water consumption. https://www.quora.com/Once-a-cat-is-on-a-urinary-diet-can-other-wet-foods-be-given

How Do I Take Care of My Cat at Home after He Is Treated for Urinary Blockage?
Answer

After treating a urinary blockage, Lisa recommends feeding Royal Canin SO canned food for one month. Lisa Hart, a graduate of UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, highlights that this formula contains an ingredient capable of dissolving crystals. It's crucial to stop feeding any dry food during this period. Even inexpensive canned brands are preferable to dry food due to their higher moisture content. Hart emphasizes the importance of water in a cat's diet. Cats often have a low thirst drive and require a higher amount of water to maintain urinary health and overall well-being. Canned food, with its higher water content, helps ensure cats stay properly hydrated, reducing the risk of issues like blockages. Compared to dry food, canned food aids in digestion, promotes healthier skin and coat, and minimizes health problems. https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-take-care-of-my-cat-at-home-after-he-is-treated-for-urinary-blockage?q=Urinary%20Care%20for%20cat

Is Veterinary-Grade Urinary Care Cat Food a Scam?
Answer

According to Jane Kepke, DVM from Washington State University, veterinary-grade urinary care cat food isn't entirely a scam. It effectively maintains acidic urine pH to prevent crystal formation and urinary blockages. However, it's often expensive and lacks quality ingredients. There are alternative approaches to manage urinary health in cats. Increasing water content in their diet is crucial to encourage frequent urination, preventing crystal formation. Feeding only canned food and adding water to create "kitty soup" can help achieve this. Testing the cat's urine pH with strips and using non-absorbent litter can aid in monitoring urinary health. Opting for meat-based diets and avoiding grains like peas can promote acidic urine pH. Providing a tabletop water fountain encourages cats to drink more, promoting hydration. Feeding cats once or twice a day, rather than allowing constant access to food, helps maintain a healthy weight and metabolism. https://www.quora.com/Is-veterinary-grade-urinary-care-cat-food-a-scam

My cat also wouldn't eat it, not even mixed.

My cat was blocked from struvite crystals or stones and he had to get unblocked and was at the hospital for over one week. It cost me a lot and now, because he refuses to eat this food that could save his life, he might die or cost me another arm and leg! Please bring out more flavors! I would still recommend this food going other cats would eat it and save lives.

Medically, it works but needs flavor variety
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My cat has done well on the s/d, but he is not a fan of chicken flavor; he never has been. He has preferred seafood flavors his whole life. While I appreciate what the s/d does for him, it'd be nice to have at least another flavor available for picky cats. We had to switch to a competing brand so that he would actually eat.

My cat won't eat it.

I bought s/d cat food per my vet's instructions. My cat ate it the first two days, and ever since he will not come near it. I've tried mixing in some broth or bits of chicken (which he loves) and he still won't eat it. I tried dry s/d as well to see if he would eat it, and he rejects that too. While the flavor may be acceptable for some cats, unfortunately my cat won't touch it.

S/D Feline
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Our beautiful boy had two bouts of bladder problems before he was diagnosed. The S/D wet and dry keeps him problem free. He was a year old when diagnosed, and we thought we were going to lose him. He is a happy, healthy 7 year old now. We appreciate the discount coupons from Hills.

My Lewie loves this and it helped urinary issues
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Been using this item as prescribed by his Vet. Lewie was in a lot of pain and was having accidents on a daily basis. I knew it wasn't behavioral. After several visits to the Vet, we were recommended this diet for him. We feed him both the wet food and the dry companion of the Urinary Diet.". It took a couple of weeks, but he is happy and healthy again! He also likes the taste.

Solved my cat's urinary problems
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Like other posts, my cat had blood in her urine and was peeing outside her box. I was feeding her conventional dry food at the time. The vet determined she had a urinary stone and suggested this product. The symptoms disappeared almost immediately and have not come back. I use both the canned and dry food exclusively now. We got a 2nd cat and I feed him the same thing. They are both about 10 years old. They love the stuff too!

Fast acting! Vet recommended!

This worked really well for my patient! Was able to dissolve a struvite bladder stone in 4 weeks based on radiographs. My patient was notably more comfortable within a week and loved the taste per the owner! Will definitely try this in the future for suspected struvite bladder stones vs going straight to surgery!

A
have to force feed cat to eat this

My vet recommended this for two months. My cat ate c/d but wont eat this. No dry food only wet s/d. I work 12 hour shifts and had to force feed my cat to eat this . After being refrigerated trying to feed him the remainder of the can which is 5 x the price of friskies, . I feel like I'm torturing the cat shoving food down his throat and making a mess. I don't even know if this is effective. My cats UA didn't show stones but he is miserable when he has symptoms. So I'm willing to try this. I wish he could like the taste.

L
It worked for my cat

My cat has a laundry list of problems and does not empty his bladder well. At age 9 he began to have crystals in his urine. There was blood in his urine and occasional infections. He was quite uncomfortable and I was at a loss about what to do for him. The Vet bills were passing from the usual well into the thousands. His neurologist suggested Hills SD. It seemed to work overnight. Tim was no longer uncomfortable, and in a week the blood was gone from his urine. I have trouble complaining about the price when I think about the Vet bills I would have incurred. Thanks Hills!

Cats don't eat pork - won't eat this product

My cat was recently diagnosed with a bladder stone. The vet recommended s/d dissolution to try to dissolve it. It's main ingredients are pork - cats don't eat pork. My cat won't touch it, even when I mix only 1 tsp into a 6-oz can of his favorite regular food. Consequently, my cat has to have surgery. If you want to make a product that a cat will actually eat, PLEASE make it with fish or fowl. In addition, this product stinks to high heaven - my entire house stinks.

works wonders

I have needed to use this product 2 times over the past 3 years. While I wish my cat didn't need it. The s/d can has taken care of my cats health problems. She loves the taste and begs for more. She did refuse to eat the dry option of this prescription diet.

C
Good product but pricey

I am pleased with the results of this product. My cat seems to be doing much better. However when we switched to the dry food, although my cat likes the food, the price of the product was way more than I had anticipated. I understand that it is a prescription food, but at 18+ dollars a bag, i should think that the bag could be filled at least to almost the top. I was surprised at how much air there was in the bag compared to food. The bag is nearly half air. I will continue to buy this product at my veterinarians recommendation, and because my cat is sick, but for the price of the food, the quantity is lacking and I would be so pleased if the bag was at least 3/4 full. Thank you, -Pedro's Mom

S
my cat likes the food

I actually don't know how to rate this product because the jury's still out. I won't know if this food dissolved the stones for another couple of weeks when a follow up exray is taken so I won't know any of the answers to your questions until then. All I can tell you right now is that my cat likes the food and is eating it fine. If the stones are gone then the product is well worthi the money.
