Benazepril Hydrochloride (Benazepril HCl) is a prescription medication primarily used for managing high blood pressure in dogs and cats. Similar to its use in humans, it is prescribed to maintain cardiovascular health in our beloved animal companions.

High blood pressure, medically known as hypertension, is a condition where the force of blood against the artery walls is consistently too high. This condition can place undue strain on the heart, making it work harder than normal. Over time, untreated hypertension can lead to severe complications, including damage to the heart, arteries, brain, and kidneys. Benazepril Hydrochloride comes into play by helping to alleviate this strain on the cardiovascular system.

  • Treatment Mechanism:Benazepril Hydrochloride is classified as a second-generation angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. ACE inhibitors like Benazepril prevent the body from producing an enzyme that narrows blood vessels. Doing so helps to relax veins and arteries, effectively lowering blood pressure.

  • Indications and Usage:Beyond treating high blood pressure, Benazepril Hydrochloride is also utilized as a vasodilator in managing heart failure. Additionally, it serves as an additional treatment option for chronic kidney failure, where maintaining proper blood pressure is crucial for kidney function.

  • Administration and Monitoring:Benazepril Hydrochloride is typically administered orally, as directed by a veterinarian. While generally well-tolerated by most pets, regular monitoring is essential. This includes routine blood pressure checks and laboratory tests to ensure the medication's efficacy and assess potential side effects.

  • Side Effects and Cautionary Measures:Although Benazepril HCl has few side effects, pet owners must be vigilant. Common side effects may include mild stomach upset, lack of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Should these symptoms persist or worsen, or if the pet exhibits extreme fatigue or signs of dizziness and coordination issues, it's crucial to notify the veterinarian promptly.

Benazepril Hydrochloride is a reliable and effective option for managing high blood pressure in dogs and cats. As with any medication, it's vital to adhere to the veterinarian's instructions diligently. Pet owners should never adjust the dosage or discontinue the medication without consulting their veterinarian. With proper monitoring and care, Benazepril Hydrochloride can contribute significantly to the well-being and longevity of pets affected by hypertension.

E
Difficult to Cut
VERIFIED PURCHASER

This is a great price and I received the product very quickly. My only issue is that my chihuahua must take 1/2 of a pill and 1/4 of a pill so I must cut them. These are such small pills that this is hard to do even with a pill cutter. If I get the version from the human pharmacy, they are a little bigger (same active dosage but more excipients I guess?) and I can just break them by hand.

B
protein level high

Our vet has precribed this as our Yorkie had high protein in her urine and felt that this meds would help prolong her life by keeping her blood pressure at a constant level. I am a bit skeptic as to this procedure. What do you think?
