Pancreatitis, the inflammation of the pancreas, is classified into various forms such as acute necrotic, subacute or chronic, pancreatic fibrosis, and collapse or atrophy of acinar pancreatic tissue. Acute pancreatitis often recovers, but it can lead to chronic inflammation. Chronic pancreatitis is characterized by acute exacerbations even after the remission of acute episodes.

Fort Dodge Viokase-V is a specialized digestive aid designed for dogs suffering from exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). This condition occurs when the pancreas fails to produce enough digestive enzymes necessary for food digestion and nutrient absorption. Viokase-V serves as a replacement therapy to compensate for this deficiency.

  • Composition and Function -Viokase-V contains activated whole raw pancreas with standardized enzyme activities. The key enzymes included are Lipase, Protease, and Amylase, measured in specified USP units. These enzymes play crucial roles in breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the diet, facilitating proper digestion and absorption of nutrients in the digestive tract.

  • Symptoms -The manifestation of pancreatitis include digestive impairment resulting in symptoms like steatorrhea (excessive fat in feces), diarrhea, weight loss, and increased appetite. In chronic cases, the destruction of acinar tissue halts pancreatic exocrine secretion. Notably, digestive impairment tends to appear relatively late in chronic pancreatitis, making diagnosis challenging.

  • Treatment Strategies -Treatment for pancreatitis focuses on alleviating pain, managing shock, restoring blood volume, and reducing pancreatic secretions in acute cases. For chronic pancreatitis, therapy with Viokase-V becomes a lifelong necessity, supplemented by a bland diet to aid digestion and minimize stress on the pancreas.

  • Administration and Dosage -Viokase-V powder should be mixed thoroughly with moistened dog food, preferably allowing it to incubate for 15-20 minutes before feeding to enhance enzyme activation. The frequency of administration should be at least three times daily. Dosage adjustments are made based on the severity of exocrine deficiency and the dog's weight.

  • Precautions -It's necessary to discontinue the use of Viokase-V if any signs of sensitivity or adverse reactions occur. Moreover, according to federal law, this drug is restricted to use only by licensed veterinarians or upon their order.

Viokase-V offers a targeted solution for managing EPI in dogs, providing essential digestive enzymes crucial for proper nutrient absorption and overall health. Proper administration, along with precautions and veterinary supervision, ensures the safety and efficacy of this treatment option.

Viokase Powder is a concentrated medication of pancreatic enzymes used to promote more efficient digestion in canines. The enzymes are of porcine origin and aid in the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Viokase Powder is also used as an aid for digestive and biliary disorders. It is effective in treating acute pancreatic disorders, but can also be used as replacement therapy for dogs suffering from chronic pancreatic and digestive problems. The medication is an oral treatment and can be easily given to dogs through food.

Dogs should be fed three times each day, with the medication administered at each meal. Simply mix the Viokase Powder thoroughly into wet food or dry food that has been moistened. The food/medicine mixture should then be allowed to sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes. More efficient digestion means a happier, healthier pet. Stop using the medicine in animals that show symptoms of hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug. Do not administer the drug to animals allergic to pork proteins.

What is Viokase-V powder used to treat?
Answer

Viokase-V is a pancreatic enzyme supplement used in dogs to aid in the digestion of food. It is commonly prescribed for dogs with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is a condition in which the pancreas fails to produce sufficient digestive enzymes like amylase, lipase, and protease. These enzymes are essential for breaking down and absorbing nutrients from food. Viokase-V powder contains pancrelipase, which is a mixture of enzymes derived from the pancreas of pigs. These enzymes help to replace the deficient enzymes in the dog's pancreas, facilitating the proper digestion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

Which digestive enzyme supplements are most effective for dogs?
Answer

The choice of the best digestive enzymes for dogs often depends on the specific needs of the individual dog. Pancreatic enzyme supplements, such as Viokase-V or PancrePlus, containing a blend of amylase, lipase, and protease, are commonly prescribed for dogs with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. These enzymes assist in breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates during the digestion process. Additionally, some commercial dog foods now include supplemental digestive enzymes to support overall digestive health. Probiotics, like FortiFlora or Proviable, are another beneficial option, as they promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria, aiding in digestion and nutrient absorption.

What is the best way to give pancreatic enzymes to dogs?
Answer

Pancreatic enzyme supplements for dogs are typically administered by mixing the prescribed dosage with the dog's food. The enzymes should be evenly distributed throughout the meal to ensure proper digestion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Some dogs may be more receptive to the supplement when it's mixed with a small amount of moist food. However, if a dog is suffering from pancreatic problems, careful feeding is crucial. Casey Swango, a former veterinary technician at Banfield Pet Hospital, suggests offering easily digestible foods like ice chips. Additionally, providing bland options such as plain cooked rice and boiled chicken can be beneficial for dogs with stomach problems. This cautious approach helps address stomach problems while supporting the dog's nutritional needs.

What are the initial indicators of insufficient pancreatic function in dogs?
Answer

The first signs of pancreatic insufficiency in dogs include weight loss and heightened appetite. Additionally, there may be diarrhea and frequent bulky stools with a pale or greasy appearance. Andie Lenhard, a senior veterinarian and registered nurse from Southeastern Appalachia, notes that a dog with pancreatic insufficiency may also seem 'off.' Classic symptoms may include reluctance to eat, signs of abdominal pain, occasional vomiting, and, in certain instances, the presence of abdominal swelling. Recognizing these early signs is crucial for prompt veterinary intervention and diagnosis. It often involves implementing appropriate treatment measures, such as enzyme supplementation and dietary adjustments, to manage the condition effectively.

Is lipase good or bad?
Answer

Lipase is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the digestion of fats. In a dog's digestive system, lipase is essential for breaking down dietary fats. It plays a crucial role in converting fats into smaller components that the body can absorb and utilize. Lipase is a natural and necessary component of the digestive process, and its presence is generally beneficial for dogs. However, problems can arise if there is an imbalance or deficiency of lipase or other digestive enzymes. In conditions like exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), dogs may lack enough lipase and other enzymes, causing difficulty in digesting fats and nutrients. In such cases, veterinarians may prescribe supplementation with pancreatic enzyme products. These products contain lipase and other enzymes to aid in digestion and manage the underlying condition.

Can your dog live without a pancreas?
Answer

Dogs, like humans, typically cannot live without a pancreas. The pancreas is vital for producing digestive enzymes and insulin, which are crucial for proper digestive and endocrine system function. If a dog were to undergo pancreas removal (pancreatectomy), it would lead to severe complications. Without the digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas, the dog would struggle to break down and absorb essential nutrients from food. Additionally, the lack of insulin production would result in diabetes, as insulin is necessary for regulating blood sugar levels. In practical terms, living without a pancreas is not a viable option for dogs. If a dog has severe pancreatic issues, veterinarians usually explore other treatments, including medications, dietary adjustments, or surgery. These interventions are aimed at addressing specific pancreatic conditions rather than resorting to complete removal of the pancreas.

What causes pancreas problems in dogs?
Answer

Pancreas problems in dogs can arise from various factors. One common condition is exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), where the pancreas fails to produce sufficient digestive enzymes. Pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, is another significant issue and can result from factors like a high-fat diet, obesity, or certain medications. Trauma, tumors, or genetic factors can also contribute to pancreatic problems. Additionally, autoimmune diseases and infections may affect the pancreas in some cases.

Each 2.8 g (1 teaspoonful) contains:

Lipase 71,400 USP units
Protease 388,000 USP units
Amylase 460,000 USP units

Viokase-V causes only partial side effects. Serious side effects come only with high doses. The prominent side effects of Viokase-V include diarrhea, weight loss, and increased appetite. Discontinue use in animals with symptoms of sensitivity.

Viokase Powder is essentially a pancreatic enzyme, which assists in digestion in animals suffering from pancreatic insufficiency disorder. A pancreatic enzyme concentrate belonging to the porcine origin, Viokase-V acts as a digestive aid in replacement therapy. The drug contains standardized amylase, protease, and lipase activities as well as esterases, peptidases, nucleases, and elastase. Pancreatic insufficiency disease, also known as 'exocrine pancreatic insufficiency' or 'maldigestion syndromeโ€™, is primarily characterized by a reduction or absence of pancreatic enzymes in the dog. Because of this disorder, the proteins, starches, and fats present in their diet cannot be broken down and assimilated through the intestinal wall. The food particles remain in the gastrointestinal tract and pass out through the feces as undigested materials. Available in 4, 8, and 12 oz. sizes.

Viokase-V is available in bottles of 4 ounces, 8 ounces, and 12 ounces. Add Viokase-V powder to moistened dog food. Mix properly to create close contact between the enzymes and food particles. Keep the mixture for incubation at room temperature for 15-20 minutes prior to feeding, for easier digestion. The recommended dose of pancreatic enzymes in dogs is 3/4-1 teaspoonful of the powder mixed with each meal. Frequent feeding (at least 3 times a day) is very important. For cats, the general dose is 1/4-3/4 teaspoonful (2.8 g/teaspoonful) with each meal. Adjust the dosage of the drug based on the severity of the pancreatic exocrine deficiency and the weight of the animal.

Viokase Powder is administered either as a treatment for an acute pancreatic attack or as part of a lifestyle for an animal suffering from chronic pancreatitis. It is given together with each meal (the pet must stick to a bland and easily digested diet), very thoroughly mixed into moistened food, and left to sit for 15 minutes.

Viokase-V
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My senior cat has to have this enzyme to live because her pancreas doesn't work. I have a PetPlus account and it has saved me lots of money because the discounted price at PetCareRx is so much lower than what I pay at the veterinarian. The only complaint I have is it sometimes takes a week before the prescription is mailed. Shorten the time from when I order to when it is sent to 24-48 hrs. and I'll give PetCareRx a 5!

I must give my elderly cat, RazzMaTazz, Viokase-V because her pancreas doesn't work. I buy the large 12 oz. bottle. As a PetPlus member, I received the best price on the internet for this expensive supplement. I recommend joining PetPlus and comparison shopping for expensive items. Petcare has treated me right!

The customer service is very friendly & helpful!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

I was disappointed at first since I ordered the 12oz Viokase. It was not in stock so instead of offering me the 8oz or calling me the order was just marked out of stock & in a hold position. This is a much needed medicine for my dogs well being & I felt the order was initially held inappropriately. I was very upset and was referred to a supervisor.

Viokase/pancreatic insufficiency

After waiting weeks to get a correct diagnosis, we were so pleased when Viokase began to work nearly immediately. Our dog went from having a bedraggled, emaciated appearance to one of total health.

Allowed my dog to live!

At 4 years old my normally 65 pound Majestic Husky/Golden mix was slowly down to 49 pounds and starving to death even though he would inhale as much food as I would give him. A second opinion vet recognized a pancreatic deficiency and we started Viokase V. He regained normal energy levels and maintained a healthy 60 pounds. The 15 minute incubation period became routine and my dog developed patience and the ability to recognize the passing of a quarter hour, he would let me know when it was ready. When we started all this, a 12 oz. bottle was only 29 bucks but cost was not an issue simply because he could not live without it. I laid him to rest in the spring of his 17th year. He had a full, happy dog life thanks to this marvelous medicine

viokase-life saver

This product is giving our "Rosie" a happy, rambunctious life. Viokase really works well for our little girl. She has only been on this product for 3 months, but has gained back 50% of her weight that she lost. I found that letting it sit on her food for at least 30 minutes works the best, there is no burning and she loves the taste.
