Ultimate Guide to Proin (Phenylpropanolamine)

Meet the Urinary Incontinence Controller: Proin!

Proin is a veterinarian-approved and FDA-approved pet medication that is used to control urinary incontinence. Proin is a chewable, oral tablet that can be taken every 12 hours to three times daily. Proin ensures aiding your pet's confidence in lowering their accidents at home.

How does Proin work?

Proin has its active ingredient in its name - phenylpropanolamine. So when the pet experiences urinary incontinence whether a puppy, a senior, or as a new distressing issue, they require a substance to treat their urologic issues, most likely bladder dysfunction or urethral sphincter incompetence.

The Proin (phenylpropanolamine) mechanism of action against pet urologic issues, as a supplemental adrenergic agent, is to activate the adrenal receptors (i.e., adrenaline equivalents are epinephrine and norepinephrine), which are the hormones needed to increase the dog's heart rate and improve blood flow.

This triggers vasoconstriction, the constriction of blood vessels, near their bladder muscles, and therefore strengthens the pet's urethral sphincter thereby preventing urine leakage.

How is Proin administered?

Proin is administered orally every 12 hours to three times a day. These liver-flavored chewable tablets can be used as dog treats or, most effectively, eaten with the dog's food.

The recommended dosage for dogs is .4 to .8 mg per lb. every 12 hours or three times daily. Other recommendations say that .91 mg/lb twice daily*. At the end of the day, it is obvious to always follow the exact recommendation of your veterinarian.

Proin bottles come in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 75 mg with 30 tablets per bottle. Proin tablets are scored down the middle to make it easy to split the tablets for a recommended dosage.

*For example, a 30 lb dog could take a 25 mg tablet twice daily.

What are the precautions of which you should be aware?

Notify your veterinarian of any medications, treatments, or vitamins your dog is taking, before administering Proin.

Keep away from dogs that are allergic to its ingredients. Keep away from pregnant or breeding pets. Keep away from dogs suffering from diabetes, glaucoma, enlarged prostate, hyperthyroidism, heart problems, or high blood pressure, and Proin worsens the conditions.

Proin is not for human use and ingestion. Keep out of reach of children.

What are the potential side effects of which you should be aware?

Proin's most common adverse reactions reported are anxiety, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, decreased appetite, polydipsia, vomiting, and hyperexcitability, if a recommended dosage doesn't maintain a pet's balanced phenylpropanolamine levels. Less common side effects are lethargy, pale gums, difficulty in urinating, and strokes.

Frequently Asked Questions
  1. What are the effects of the active ingredient Phenylpropanolamine?

Phenylpropanolamine is an adrenergic agent that connects to adrenaline receptors resulting in vasoconstriction, the constriction of blood vessels, that causes the tightening of bladder muscles and strengthening the urethral sphincter to aid in urinary incontinence. Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride is the drug's salt form.

  2. What are the reasons that dogs and cats take Proin?

To treat urinary incontinence by maintaining balanced phenylpropanolamine levels.

  3. What are the most common Proin side effects?

Proin's side effects that are reported are anxiety, irritability, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, loss of appetite, and hyperexcitability if a recommended dosage doesn't maintain balanced phenylpropanolamine levels. Less common side effects can be lethargy, pale gums, seizures, difficulty in urinating, or even strokes.

  4. What is the Proin dosage?

Proin tablets come in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 75 mg tablets. Dogs take .4 to .8 mg per pound of body weight every 12 hours to three times daily. If urinary incontinence occurs at night, give the largest dose before going to sleep. This medication will take effect quickly, in about 1 to 2 hours, and clinical improvement should follow.

  5. What do the Proin reviews say?

Proin (phenylpropanolamine) reviews rate 5 out of 5 stars. Reviewers say that Proin is an effective urinary incontinence medication from puppies to senior dogs and that liver-flavored oral and chewable Proin tablets are easy to administer because they are tastier than other pet medications.

Concluding Thoughts

The most important thing that you should know about Proin (Phenylpropanolamine) is its effective power to aid in puppy and senior's urinary incontinence and then their confidence and then improving their quality of life!

Is Phenylpropanolamine Safe?
Answer

Proin or phenylpropanolamine is one of the most trusted drugs that are in use for the control of urinary incontinence among pets. The drug is approved by the FDA or Food and Drug Administration. It is preferred by veterinarians across spaces. Your veterinarian can also suggest this drug to your pet suffering from urinary incontinence. These come as oral liver flavored tablets. The administration of the drug is generally recommended every twelve hours or thrice daily. It is found to be specifically helpful for the pets that have such issues and help them to lower their chances of mishaps due to urinary incontinence at home. It helps bolster the confidence of the dogs and cats by treating the root cause of such urinary incontinence. Proin or phenylpropanolamineโ€™s action is aided by the hormone regulation of the petโ€™s urinary system to help the pet with a treatment. It acts as an adrenergic agent and helps greatly to provide strength to the bladder muscles. It also enables the treatment of urinary incontinence due to urethral sphincter hypotonus in dogs.

Do You Need a Prescription for Proin?
Answer

Proin or phenylpropanolamine is a drug that can help pets to get a grip on their urinary incontinence issue. The tablets are administered under the strict recommendation of the veterinarians. The drug has an FDA or Food and Drug Administration license. It necessitates the drug to be prescribed by a licensed veterinarian for its oral use in dogs. Pets often suffer from such issues and can lead to cats and dogs peeing anywhere in the house. They are not able to control their activities and involuntarily start peeing due to urinary incontinence. Since the treatment involves the regulation of the hormones that control such actions, supervision by veterinarians is a must for such conditions. Adhering to the instructions as is recommended by your petโ€™s veterinarian is vital to treat such issues. Take precautionary measures and care for the pets during such conditions. Ensuring the drug administration for the stipulated number of times as per the prescription will enable you to give the confidence back to the pets that they may have lost due to urinary incontinence.

Can You Just Stop Proin?
Answer

The administration of Proin is generally for a longer duration and veterinarians recommend strictly adhering to the prescribed guidelines to have better results. However, depending on the situation the administration can happen for indeterminate periods too. A change in the clinical symptoms of the condition can mean or warrant a decrease in the dosage of Proin or phenylpropanolamine tablets. Successful results can be seen in most cases after the administration of the drug for a considerable period. It is also important to note that stopping the drug completely may not be a good solution. A host of changes like the incorporation of lifestyle changes along with lower dosages of the drug can help to arrest the issue. A crucial aspect to note here is that since this is a precipitation drug, any changes in the dosage should be done only under the strict guidance of your petโ€™s veterinarian. They are aware of the potency of the drug as well as know about the conditions of your pet, which it is currently going through.

How Long Should Dogs Be On Proin?
Answer

Based on the approvals by the FDA or Food and Drug Administration, Proin or phenylpropanolamine liver-flavored tablets are capable of controlling urinary incontinence in dogs by just a single dosage of the drug. However, another aspect to note here is that the dosage and duration of the tablets will depend on the exact conditions of the pet. If your pet has an ailing condition, it can either have a minimum administration of twenty-eight days or more. Severe issues often need treatment for longer durations. It can also happen that the veterinarians may suggest a change of lifestyle habits for the pets and a minimum dosage that needs to be continued for a prolonged period.

Why Does My Dog Keep Leaking Pee?
Answer

Urinary incontinence among dogs can result due to a variety of reasons. These can include ailments of the urinary system like bladder infections and urinary tract infections. It can result due to the old age of the dog. Timely treatment of the disorder is very crucial for the maintenance of sound health conditions for your pet. At times, the situation can worsen and they can start discharging urine in large amounts. The involuntary action of the pets can trigger urination even when they are asleep or lying down. This can be a cause of concern in the days ahead. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you see any such conditions.

Is Proin Suitable for All Types of Urinary Incontinence in Dogs and Cats?
Answer

Proin is a drug used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs and cats, albeit it is not appropriate for all forms of the condition. Proin is primarily used to treat urinary incontinence resulting from a weak bladder sphincter muscle; this condition is more frequent in dogs than cats. However, this medication works by constricting the bladder sphincter muscle, which helps to prevent urine leaks.

Can Proin Be Used to Treat Urinary Tract Infections in Both Dogs and Cats?
Answer

Yes, it can. Phenylpropanolamine, also known as Proin, is primarily used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs and occasionally in cats. Proin prevents urine leaks in animals with compromised bladder control by strengthening the urethral sphincter muscle.

Is Proin Effective for Long-Term Use in Dogs?
Answer

Yes, Proin can be used in dogs for extended periods, and many dogs can stay on the medication for over 180 days without developing serious issues. However, as with any medication, there is always a risk of side effects with long-term use, and some dogs may be more sensitive to Proin than others.

Can Proin Cause Any Long-Term Complications in Dogs and Cats?
Answer

Yes, it can. While Proin is generally considered safe and effective when used as directed by a veterinarian, there is a risk of long-term complications with any medication, including Proin. Some dogs and cats may be more sensitive to the medication than others, and there is always a risk of adverse effects with long-term use. Possible long-term complications of Proin use in dogs and cats may include increased blood pressure, restlessness, decreased appetite, and in rare cases, more serious adverse reactions such as seizures, aggression, or difficulty breathing.

Is Proin Safe for Dogs and Cats With Other Underlying Medical Conditions?
Answer

Proin should be used cautiously or avoided in dogs and cats with certain underlying medical conditions, as the medication may worsen or exacerbate these conditions. These conditions may include glaucoma, enlarged prostate, seizures, diabetes mellitus, elevated thyroid hormone, and heart or vessel disorders.

Are There Any Drug Interactions With Proin?
Answer

Yes, some drug interactions may happen with Proin. Proin should not be combined with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), which may increase the risk of adverse effects. In addition, Proin may interact with certain medications that affect blood pressure, such as beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers, and caution should be used when using these drugs together.

Where Can I Purchase Proin?
Answer

You can obtain a prescription for Proin from your regular veterinarian or from an online veterinary pharmacy that requires a prescription. It is important to use caution when purchasing medications online and to ensure that the online pharmacy is reputable and licensed.

How Should Proin Be Stored?
Answer

Proin should be kept between 68 and 77 ยฐF (20 and 25 degrees Celsius) in a cold, dry location. The drug must be stored in its original container with the lid well closed, out of the reach of kids and animals. Also, keeping Proin away from hot, humid, and direct sunshine is critical.

How Long Will Proin Stay in a Dogโ€™s System?
Answer

The amount and frequency of administration, the dog's age and general health, and the particular dog's metabolism can all affect how long Proin remains in a dog's system. However, a single dose of Proin usually has effects that last 6 to 12 hours until the drug is digested and cleared from the dog's body.

What Should I Do if My Dog or Cat Misses a Dose of Proin?
Answer

Proin should be administered to your dog or cat as soon as you remember if they miss a dosage. However, if it's almost time for the next dose, it is best to skip the missed one and continue with his dosing schedule. Proin shouldn't be administered twice to your pet to make up for a missing dose.

Phenylpropanolamine

Phenylpropanolamine is an adrenergic agent effective in the treatment of urinary incontinence in animals. This extra-label medication is fit to be used only in dogs. Phenylpropanolamine works by increasing the sphincter tone of urethra, which tightens the bladder sphincter muscles thereby preventing urine leakage.

Keep out of reach of children.

Do not give with ephedrine or epinephrine, or within two weeks of using a MAOi, such as Anipryl, selegiline or a Preventic Collar. Proin may cause restlessness and hyperactivity, pale gums, difficulty urinating, irritability, hypertension, and decreased appetite. Hypertension risk increases if Proin is given concurrently with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or with reserpine, tricyclic antidepressants, amitraz (the active ingredient of the Preventic tick control collar and canine Promeris, a flea control product), or ganglionic blocking agents. Conditions such as glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disorders, may worsen.

Side effects may worsen if used in conjunction with other sympathomimetic drugs such as ephedrine or epinephrine. Notify your veterinarian of any medications, treatments or vitamins your dog is taking, prior to administering Proin.

Avoid using Phenylpropanolamine in animals with a history of allergy to the ingredients of this drug. Animals suffering from conditions of glaucoma, enlarged prostate, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, heart problems, or high blood pressure should be kept away from proin. Abstain from using Phenylpropanolamine in pregnant and breeding animals as it can cause harmful effects.

The most common side effects noted while administering Phenylpropanolamine are restlessness, irritability, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and loss of appetite. Restlessness, weakness, pale gums, seizures, or difficulty in urinating are also reported as occasional side effects in animals being treated with Phenylpropanolamine.

Proin is available in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 75 mg chewable tablets. The dosage of Proin generally depends on the bodyweight of the animal. However, a dose of 12.5 mg to 50 mg can be administered three times daily, depending on weight. The usual dose of Proin in dogs is 0.4-0.8 mg/pound every 12 hours. Overdosage can bring about symptoms of high blood pressure, increased heart rate, seizures, or coma. Do not increase or reduce the dosage without a veterinary prescription.

Administer Proin chewable tablets, to the exact specifications of your veterinarian, and with food.

LOVE It!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Ironically, ALL 3 of my female pups were placed on this early in life due to UI. I have been buying it since 2017. It definitely works and you will know if you ever miss a dose. One of my girls had a surgical procedure an hour away from home and had to stay the night. I did not take her Proin in the labeled bottle with her name on it because I use pill boxes to make my life easier. The surgeon would not accept my pill box (rightfully so) so my pup missed 2 doses. Needless to say, she leaked all of the way home when I picked her up. Luckily, I was prepared for that and I stay prepared for future ER situations. Bottom line is that it works and is great. New medication has since hit the market but I am not willing to change something that works for my pups.

It immediately stopped my puppy's urine leakage
VERIFIED PURCHASER

When our puppy was about 7 months old, about 3 months after her spay, she started urinating in her sleep. Her urinalysis was normal, so we started her on Proin and it immediately stopped the problem. She has had zero side effects (that I know of). When she was about 14 months old, she started leaking again. Increasing her dose did the trick, which makes sense since she had grown a lot since starting the medication.

Our female pit started having incontinence issues a few months after getting her spayed. Every now and then sheโ€™d dribble a little bit usually after getting up from a nap. The vet checked her for any other problems and said it was just incontinence and prescribed her Proin. Sheโ€™s been on it for roughly 8 years now and has not had any issues with it or incontinence.

The Proin stopped our puppies leaking urine immediately. After around 6 months, she started leaking again. We increased her dose based on her current weight and sheโ€™s been fine ever since. Great product! One thing is that she no longer eats the pills so we just put them in her food.

Our female Staffy has always had urinary issues since a baby. She had a lot of UTIโ€™s as a puppy and then after getting spayed she stopped getting them but started having small little dribbles from time to time.
