Ultimate Guide to Profender

Meet the One-Time Topical Cat Dewormer: Profender!

Profender is a vet-recommended dewormer for cats that provides a one-time topical deworming treatment. This exclusive product is administered on your cat's skin with an easy-to-use applicator that eliminates parasitic worms (i.e., tapeworms, roundworms, and hookworms) all at once, guaranteeing a comfortable and lovable condition.

How does Profender work?

Profender is a medication with two powerful active ingredients - Emodepside and Praziquantel. Emodepside is only found in Profender for cats and is effective against adult and immature stages of roundworms and hookworms.

Praziquantel is a prescription anthelmintic (de-wormer) that expels anti-parasitic worms like trematodes (e.g, tapeworms). Praziquantel is also an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) that inhibits newly hatched insect larvae from reaching adulthood or reproducing.

After one treatment, all of the worms (i.e., adult tapeworms, roundworms, and hookworms, as well as immature roundworms and hookworms) will be expelled through the cat's feces.

How is Profender administered?

Profender is a liquid topical solution that is administered with a spot-on treatment with single-dose efficacy. According to the cat's weight, a customer will be able to choose the appropriate size and box with one full tube of Profender medication contents.

The recommended dosage is 1.36 mg per pound of Emodepside and 5.45 mg per pound of Praziquantel. See the dosage chart below:

Cat Weight & Size Color Dosage (mL) Emodepside (mg) Praziquantel (mg)
2.2 - 5.5 lbs. (Small) Blue 0.35 7.5 30.0
5.5 - 11 lbs. (Medium) Orange 0.70 15.0 60.1
11 - 17.6 lbs. (Large) Purple 1.12 24.0 96.1
Cats that weigh over 17.6 pounds should be treated with the appropriate mL tube amount.

The medication is applied directly to the base of the cat's neck. Make sure that it is not being applied to damaged skin or if the hair is wet. Place the opened applicator on the cat's exposed skin and squeeze the entire contents there. Only if a second application is needed due to a new infection, wait only after 30 days.

What are the precautions of which you should be aware?

Consult your veterinarian about using cat deworming products and about all of the medications that your cat is already taking. Flea and tick medications or preventatives have negative interactions with Profender for cats.

Sick or debilitated cats are cautioned to use the product. Pregnant women are cautioned to touch or apply the product to their cat. Children are cautioned to touch or even come into contact with your cat until after 24 hours after application.

What are side effects of Profender for cats that you should be aware of?

Profender for cat's most common adverse reactions reported are licking and excessive grooming at the treatment site, which can cause hypersalivation or vomiting. Scratching, hypersalivation, lethargy, hair loss, anxiety, vomiting, and diarrhea are very rare reactions.

How To Apply Profender to Cats?

Profender is a topical solution that is applied to the cat's neck region. To be more specific, cat owners need to administer the Profender directly to the base of the cat's neck.

Profender dosages can vary from 0.35 mL to 1.12 mL, and the amount you have to administer depends on the weight of your cat. To apply the Profender, locate the base of the cat's neck. Then, squeeze the contents of the applicator onto the exposed skin. Use with caution; make sure the medication is not coming in contact with damaged skin. Follow the vet's prescription if you are not sure how, or whether or not to apply the Profender.

Does Profender for Cats Kill Fleas?

No, Profender for cats does not kill fleas.

While it may be administered topically, the Profender gets absorbed by the cat's skin. It then deals with your cat's internal parasites. However, the Profender does not offer any sort of protection, nor does it help kill external parasites like fleas.

How Long for a Profender to Work?

It takes 24 to 48 hours for a Profender to work.

In normal conditions, the medication will take effect within 24 hours of applying in the case of tapeworms. For all other types of worms, it needs at least 48 hours to take effect. You do not have to wait for a long period to see whether or not the medication is working.

Is Profender Safe for Cats?

However, cat owners need to be careful and make sure that their cats do not lick the medicine. Hence, the treated cats need to be isolated from other cats or pets inside the house until the medicine dries. You might want to use a cone for your cat if it has a habit of licking itself all the time.

Can You Use Profender and Revolution at the Same Time?

How Long Does Profender for Cats Last?

Profender for cats lasts two weeks from the time it has been administered.

After two weeks, if the cat catches worms, you will again have to deworm through the Profender treatment or any other deworming treatment for cats.

How Often to Apply Profender for Cats?

Profender needs to be applied every time your cat has worms.

You need to understand the Profender is a purge dewormer, meaning that is an instantaneous killer when it comes to worms. However, it is not a vaccine or a worm-preventing dosage. Hence, regular applications will only be required if your cat continues to get the worms, even after it has been treated for them.

So even after you are done applying the Profender, your job is not done. You then have to make sure that your cat does not come in contact with worms again. Otherwise, you will have to repeat the Profender treatment.
Concluding Thoughts

The most important thing that you should know about Profender is its one-time use treatment to expel internal parasitic worms - tapeworms, roundworms, and hookworms - from your cat. Forget about pills! Just apply a few drops on your cat's skin and you are that much closer to a worm-free kitty!

Is Profender Safe for Cats?
Answer

Profender is safe to use on adult cats and kittens who are at least eight weeks old and weigh 2.2 pounds or more. But as with any medication, strictly adhere to your veterinarian's recommendations. Owners should keep their pets from eating the product, as it can be harmful if ingested. Keeping treated cats separate from other pets until the product dries is also recommended, as this can help prevent accidental ingestion or contact with the medication.

Can Profender Be Given to Puppies?
Answer

Yes, depending on its age and weight. Puppies under 12 weeks old or weighing less than 1 kilogram shouldn't use Profender.

Can Profender Be Given to Pregnant or Nursing Cats?
Answer

Unless specifically authorized by a veterinarian, Profender should not be administered to nursing or pregnant cats. Profender may be a risk to growing fetuses or nursing kittens because their safety during pregnancy or lactation has not been thoroughly proven.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Profender in Cats?
Answer

Possible side effects of Profender in cats may include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, and irritation or redness at the application site. More severe side effects such as tremors, convulsions, anxiety, unsteadiness, and allergic responses may manifest less frequently.

How Is Profender Administered to Cats?
Answer

Profender is administered topically by applying the pre-measured medication directly to the skin on the back of the cat's neck. The medication comes in a tube designed for a single dose based on the cat's weight. To administer, part the fur at the base of the cat's neck, place the tube tip directly against the skin, and squeeze the entire tube contents onto the skin in one spot.

Can I use Profender On Cats With Open Wounds or Sores?
Answer

No, you should not. Profender is not designed to be used on open wounds or sores. In fact, using Profender on cats with open wounds or sores can irritate and potentially make the wound worse.

Can Profender Be Given With Other Medications?
Answer

Yes, it can be given with some medications. Using Profender in conjunction with a topical flea treatment such as Frontline or Advantage is safe. However, applying these products at least two days apart is recommended to minimize the risk of adverse effects. This is because both Profender and topical flea treatments are applied to the skin and may interact with each other, potentially causing skin irritation or other negative side effects. Applying the products on separate days allows each medication to be fully absorbed before the other is applied.

Can Profender Be Used to Treat Tapeworms in Cats?
Answer

Yes, Profender can be used to treat tapeworms in cats. Tapeworms are one of the intestinal parasites that Profender is effective against. The active ingredients in Profender, emodepside, and praziquantel work together to attack both adult and immature stages of these parasites, killing them and allowing them to be eliminated from the cat's body through their feces.

Can Profender Cause Adverse Reactions in Cats With Certain Health Conditions?
Answer

Yes, Profender may cause adverse reactions in cats with certain health conditions. It is important to inform your veterinarian if your cat has any pre-existing medical conditions or is taking any medications before administering Profender. Cats with liver or kidney disease and pregnant or lactating cats may be more sensitive to the effects of Profender and may require special monitoring or dosing adjustments. In addition, if your cat has a weakened immune system or is currently undergoing treatment for another medical condition, it may be more susceptible to side effects from Profender.

Can Profender Cause Allergic Reactions in Cats?
Answer

Yes, Profender can potentially cause allergic reactions in cats. Allergic reactions occur when a cat's immune system overreacts to one of the ingredients in the medication. Signs of an allergic reaction to Profender may include difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of the face or tongue, and pale gums.

When Should Profender Be Discontinued in Cats?
Answer

Profender should be discontinued in cats if they experience an allergic reaction or any other adverse side effects. Additionally, if the cat's condition does not improve or worsens after treatment, you should follow up with your veterinarian for further evaluation and possible alternative treatment options.

Caused a local reaction on my cat's skin between shoulder blades :(
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My cat has taken the deworming medicine by injection before and I decided to try the topical form. Unfortunately the medicine 2 days after I applied it caused a local reaction with my cat's skin, the skin became inflamed and hair came out where the medicine was placed between the shoulder blades, not sure if it helped with the original problem at hand but I haven't seen any rice looking specks where my cat sleeps so I'm thinking it did help. I have ordered products from you before and never had a problem so I'm thinking that my cat's skin was sensitive even though she handles frontline and advantage ok.

M
This product seems safe and works

I was afraid of this new product and sent the first script back and exchanged for cestex which did not work very well. I finally got the courage to use this on my 12 year old domestic short hair and it really did the job. He got it at 8:30 am and by 9:30 he pooped a 5 inch tapeworm. It also gave him diarhara on the first day. but by next day was fine. He seems rid of tapes and hopefully hooks and other rounds. I plan to use it one more time in 30 days, then switch him to revolution flea (and worm )meds monthly. Or will use it once more then keep him on Advantage Purple and treat tapeworms(and other worms) with Profender as they occur.

happy with product, but very unhappy with the service.

I recently ordered this product. I have used this before and it works great. Problem I had was I thought I was getting more of the product then I recieved. When I called to complain they said there was nothing they could do. It was misleading ordering it online. I have seven cats and thought I was recieving 20 tubes as the box reads, but only got one. very unhappy.

It's a liquid dewormer you apply on the back of a cat's neck and it kills hook, tape & round worms. I always get scratched or bitten when trying to give a pill to my cat. This is a wonderful product!
