Ultimate Guide to Interceptor Plus

Meet the Dangerous Parasite Protector: Interceptor Plus!

Interceptor Plus is an FDA-approved dog medication that protects your dogs from five dangerous (and potentially fatal) internal parasites: heartworms, roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Interceptor Plus is a monthly chicken-flavored oral chewable tablet that ensures that your dog is safe, happy, and healthy.

How does Interceptor Plus work?

Interceptor Plus for dogs is a medication with two powerful active ingredients - Milbemycin Oxime and Prazantiquel. These ingredients in Interceptor Plus prevent, control, and expel internal anti-parasitic worms in your dog.

Milbemycin Oxime is a strong parasiticide and a 100% effective heartworm disease preventative against D. immitis (i.e., heartworm larvae). The active ingredient controls intestinal worms that are found in dogs by intercepting the major neurotransmitter in a vertebrate's nervous system that causes parasite paralysis and its eventual death.

Milbemycin Oxime is the generic name for the brand Interceptor and Praziquantel is the Plus. Praziquantel is a prescription anthelmintic that expels anti-parasitic worms like trematodes (e.g, tapeworms). Praziquantel is also an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) that inhibits newly hatched insect larvae from reaching adulthood or reproducing.

How is Interceptor Plus administered?

Interceptor Plus for dogs is administered orally through a monthly chicken-flavored chewable that protects your dog for the next 30 days. The dog's body weight determines the milligrams (mg) of Milbemycin Oxime and milligrams (mg) of Praziquantel in each monthly Interceptor Plus chewable from the correct colored box.

See the dosage chart below:

Body Weight Color Milbemycin Oxime (mg) Praziquantel (mg)
Interceptor Plus 2 - 8 lbs. Orange 2.3 22.8
Interceptor Plus 8.1 - 25 lbs. Green 5.75 57
Interceptor Plus 25.1 - 50 lbs. Yellow 11.5 114
Interceptor Plus 50.1 - 100 lbs. Blue 23 228

What are the precautions of which you should be aware?

Test for heartworm disease before using Interceptor Plus. Avoid pregnant and lactating dogs from using Interceptor Plus.

What are the Interceptor Plus side effects of which you should be aware?

Interceptor Plus's common adverse reactions reported are vomiting, diarrhea, depression, lethargy, ataxia, hypersalivation, seizures, weakness, and decreased appetite.

Frequently Asked Questions
  1. What do Interceptor Plus reviews say?

Interceptor Plus reviews rate 5 out of 5 stars. Most reviewers say that they love that Interceptor Plus is in a tasty treat form and the best combination of protection for their dogs.

  2. What is Interceptor Plus?

Interceptor Plus is a monthly, prescription chewable that protects dogs from five dangerous (and potentially fatal) internal parasites. Interceptor Plus prevents heartworm larvae and disease, expels tapeworms, and paralyzes/controls adult hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms.

  3. What is the difference between Interceptor vs Interceptor Plus for dogs?

Interceptor has only one active ingredient (i.e., Milbemycin Oxime) to prevent and control four dangerous parasitic worms. Interceptor Plus also has Praziquantel, an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) and an anthelmintic (de-wormer) substance that expels trematodes (i.e., tapeworms) and inhibits insect larvae from developing into adulthood.

  4. How long does Interceptor Plus take to kill worms?

This medication should take effect within one to two days to create a layer of protection against these internal parasites. If you see intestinal parasites or worms in your pet's stool, it means that the medication is working, since the dog's gastrointestinal system is clearing itself out.

  5. Is Interceptor Plus for puppies?

Interceptor Plus can be administered to puppies that are at least 6 weeks of age and weigh 2 lbs.

Concluding Thoughts

The most important thing that you should know about Interceptor Plus is it is the best combination of protection against five different dangerous parasitic worms. Interceptor Plus ensures that your dogs will be safe from heartworms (and fatal heartworm disease). Safety first!

Does Interceptor Plus Kill Parasites?
Answer

Interceptor Plus is a monthly chewable tablet for dogs and puppies. It has two active ingredients - Milbemycin Oxime, Prazantiquel. The main purpose of these components is to actively exterminate the internal parasite that is present in your dog. The administration of Interceptor Plus exterminates both the intestinal and blood parasites. A few examples of such parasites are hookworm, tapeworm, whipworm, and roundworm which can be categorized under intestinal parasites. And as for the blood parasites, the medicine can easily tackle heartworm disease. You can proceed with the monthly deworming process of your dog with the help of Interceptor Plus easily. This monthly deworming procedure of your dog completely eradicates the stubborn parasites that are present in your dogโ€™s gastrointestinal tracts. Another beneficial point about the Interceptor Plus for Dogs is it does not stop working even after completely eradicating the previously present parasites inside your pet. Interceptor Plus actively exterminates the newly exposed parasites from the outside environment during the whole month.

How Long Will My Puppy Poop Worms After Deworming?
Answer

After the first application of Interceptor Plus, you will be able to notice the dead parasites in your dogโ€™s stool for a while. Sometimes your dog may also show signs of mild diarrhea. For this, there is no need to worry, as this generally happens due to the digestion of the parasites by your dog which was already present in your dogโ€™s system. Normally whatever you may observe from your dogโ€™s stool, the recently medicated dog with Interceptor Plus will behave naturally without any side effects.

What Happens if I Give My Dog Too Much Interceptor?
Answer

There may occur various scenarios in case your dog overdoses on Interceptor Plus. Some dogs may not show any reaction. But in a few cases, it may become very serious or indicate a complicated outcome. These cases are mostly considered very rare but not exceptionally so. A case that may show an indication of toxicity or overdose can be found in dogs that have a rare genetic mutation. The symptoms of such an overdose can easily be observed by you. The indicator of overdose will easily manifest on your pet as it will show some form of weakness, lack of energy, and depression. In extreme cases, some pets may exhibit signs of a dilated pupil, collapsing, occasional seizures, or completely succumbing to coma.

How Long Does It Take for Interceptor Plus to Work?
Answer

The action of Interceptor Plus for Dogs may take effect according to your dogโ€™s weight, size, and metabolism. Generally Interceptor plus shows reaction within twenty-four to forty-eight hours of its application. In the first half of the forty-eight hours, you will notice a few changes. These particular changes in your dog, as he or she shall exhibit a much more energetic reaction, as compared to the time before taking Interceptor Plus. This type of reaction happens due to the drug starting to take effect during this first half. It is also during this period the external parasites appear to show weakness or may start dying gradually. These are all signs of clinical improvement in your dog.

How Often Do I Give My Dog Interceptor Plus?
Answer

Interceptor Plus For Dogs is a chicken-flavored chewable tablet that is advised by the veterinarian to be administered orally. This drug should be taken once a month by your dog for it to work properly more than that is not recommended. The administration of milbemycin oxime and praziquantel is clinically stipulated at a minimum dosage of 0.23 milligrams and 2.28 milligrams respectively, which is applied per pound of your petโ€™s body weight. This monthly chew dosage after the parasitic exposure should be continued for at least six months for further prevention.

Does Interceptor Plus Work for 30 Days?
Answer

Interceptor Plus should be given to your dog every 30 days. You should also keep in mind that the most preferable date for the medicine to re-apply is the same date every month. This is done for the prevention of any further parasitic infestation in your pet. In some instances, it is also noticed that your veterinarian may prescribe a daily dosage in lower quantity for the treatment to manage infestation in your pet. The most appropriate time for the Interceptor Plus to properly work is to apply after a full meal. This ensures your pet adequately absorbs the drug in its body.

Does Interceptor Plus Cause Drowsiness?
Answer

Interceptor Plus for Dogs is one of the most popular drugs in the pharmaceutical market and has very few side effects when the drug is applied as per the normal dosage. But if by any chance you notice any abnormality in your pet, you must consult your veterinarian for further advice. The side effects can include weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, salivation, dizziness, depression, anorexia, lethargy, convulsions, and ataxia. Some other side effects may also occur.

Can Interceptor Plus be used in combination with other heartworm preventatives?
Answer

The use of Interceptor Plus in combination with other heartworm preventatives is generally not recommended, as it may increase the risk of adverse reactions or other complications. This is because Interceptor Plus already contains an anthelmintic agent (milbemycin oxime) that is effective against heartworms and other parasites, and adding another preventative may result in an overdose or other adverse effects.

Can I purchase Interceptor Plus online?
Answer

In general, Interceptor Plus is a prescription medication that can only be obtained through a licensed veterinarian. However, some online pharmacies may offer Interceptor Plus for sale if they have a valid prescription from a veterinarian.

How should I store Interceptor Plus?
Answer

Interceptor Plus should be stored in a dry place at room temperature between 68-77ยฐF (20-25ยฐC). The tablets should be kept in their blister packaging until ready to use, and should be protected from light and moisture. Additionally, it is vital to keep Interceptor Plus out of reach of children and pets, as the medication may be harmful if ingested.

How long does Interceptor Plus take to leave my dog's system?
Answer

The exact duration of time it takes for Interceptor Plus to leave your dog's system can vary based on a number of factors, including the dog's age, weight, overall health, and metabolism, as well as the dose and frequency of administration. However, the active ingredient in Interceptor Plus, milbemycin oxime, has a half-life of approximately 24 hours in dogs, meaning that it takes about 24 hours for half of the medication to be eliminated from the body.

Can I give Interceptor Plus to my cat?
Answer

No, Interceptor Plus is specifically formulated for use in dogs only and should not be given to cats. The active ingredient in Interceptor Plus, milbemycin oxime, is safe and effective in dogs but can be harmful to cats. Milbemycin oxime works by targeting the nervous system of parasites and preventing their reproduction, and cats have a different nervous system than dogs. This means that if a cat is given Interceptor Plus, it can cause serious adverse effects, such as tremors, seizures, or even death.

Can Interceptor Plus be used for dogs with heartworm disease?
Answer

No, Interceptor Plus should not be used for dogs with heartworm disease, as it is a preventative medication and is not effective in treating an active heartworm infection. In fact, administering Interceptor Plus to a dog with an existing heartworm infection can be harmful and may cause severe and potentially life-threatening adverse reactions. Your veterinarian will normally suggest a course of therapy for your dog if it has been found to have adult heartworms, which may involve drugs to kill them as well as precautions to prevent further infections.

Can Interceptor Plus be used for dogs with flea infestations?
Answer

Interceptor Plus is primarily designed for the prevention of heartworm disease, as well as the treatment and control of various intestinal parasites in dogs. While it does have some effectiveness against certain types of fleas, it is not generally considered to be a reliable method for controlling flea infestations.

Can Interceptor Plus be used for dogs with tick infestations?
Answer

No, Interceptor Plus is not frequently used to prevent dog infestations of ticks. Although it works well against some internal parasites, it is not consistently active against ticks. Your vet may suggest additional items made specifically for tick prevention and control if your dog is infested with ticks.

Can Interceptor Plus be used for dogs with roundworms?
Answer

Answer

Answer

Can Interceptor Plus be used for dogs with tapeworms?
Answer

Milbemycin Oxime and Praziquantel

Treatment with fewer than 6 monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Interceptor Plus, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infections. The safety of Interceptor Plus has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding or in lactating females. The following adverse reactions have been reported in dogs after administration of milbemycin oxime or praziquantel: vomiting, diarrhea, depression/lethargy, ataxia, anorexia, convulsions, weakness, and salivation. Please see Interceptor Plus product label for complete safety information or contact your veterinarian.

Iโ€™ve given this to my dogs since they were puppies. It was recommended by my vet for my 2 Australian shepherds. Itโ€™s protected them with no side effects. 1 will eat it straight. They other has to have it cut up and mixed in wet food. Itโ€™s a pretty big piece for larger dogs.

    Best combination of protection
    VERIFIED PURCHASER

I got this for my German Shepherd and he eats it like any other treat. I really like this product compared to Heartgard Plus (or generic TriHeart plus) because it also protects against whipworm and tapeworms. The other products only cover heart worm, round worm, and hook worm. So this gives protection from 2 other common parasites for just a little bit more $. I initially considered using Setinel Spectrum which covers all of the above plus fleas. However, sentinel spectrum does not cover ticks meaning if you want tick prevention you are going to get it with flea protection from another product. So for me I Interceptor Plus is the best protection (most number of worms) and I combine it with Bravecto chewable to get Flea and Tick prevention.
