Do You Need a Prescription for Hill's Science Diet Cat Food?
Answer

You do not need a prescription to purchase Hill's Science Diet Cat Food. It is sold as a commercial pet food and is available at many pet stores, veterinary clinics, and online retailers. However, some specialized formulas, such as those designed for specific health conditions, may require a recommendation from a veterinarian. Before making significant alterations to your cat's diet, it's advisable to seek guidance from your veterinarian. A Quora user inquired about the necessity of a prescription for Hill's I/D pet food. He questioned whether it was a tactic for veterinarians to exploit their clients. In response, Michael Hoover, a DVM from the University of Missouri-Columbia, clarified that it wasn't a scam. He clarifies that it's a measure to ensure proper usage with appropriate instructions. He explained that I/D is formulated for gastroenteritis and contains minimal fat suitable for dogs. On the other hand, C/D is designed to regulate urine pH and ash content. Additionally, Y/D is intended for hyperthyroid cats. These foods address specific conditions without medications, necessitating their use for corresponding diseases.Reference: https://www.quora.com/Why-does-Hills-I-D-pet-food-require-a-prescription-Is-it-just-another-way-for-vets-to-scam-their-clients

What Are the Side Effects of Hill's Prescription Diet Urinary Care?
Answer

Hill's Prescription Diet Urinary Care is a special cat food to help with urinary health problems like UTIs and crystals. While it's usually safe for most cats, there are some potential side effects to watch out for. If your cat has certain allergies or sensitivities, they might have issues with this food. Some possible side effects include digestive problems like diarrhea, vomiting, or gas, especially when starting the new diet. Cats can also develop allergies to ingredients in the food, leading to itching, rashes, or stomach issues. Changes in appetite, weight, or urinary habits may also occur due to differences in the food's calorie or nutrient content. It's important to monitor your cat closely and consult your vet if you notice any concerning changes. A pet owner on JustAnswer.com inquired about the potential side effects of long-term use of Hill's prescription diet feline, C/D, for his cat. Despite giving this formula to his cat for two years under veterinary guidance, the cat developed bladder stone issues. Dr. Michael Salkin, from the University of California at Davis, responded to the query, suggesting an alternative approach. Instead of acidifying the urine, Dr. Salkin recommended diluting the urine by feeding only wet food. Acidifying diets could increase the risk of another type of bladder stone called oxalate, which is not easily dissolved with diet. Diluting the urine helps prevent minerals from precipitating and forming bladder stones. Dr. Salkin advised the pet owner to discuss this approach with their cat's veterinarian for the best action. It's crucial to monitor your cat closely when starting a new diet and consult with your veterinarian if you notice any concerning symptoms. Your veterinarian can guide the best diet for your cat's specific needs and monitor their progress.Reference: https://www.justanswer.com/cat-health/7ogos-giving-cat-hills-prescription-diet-feline-c-d.html

What's the Difference Between Hill's Science Diet and Hill's Prescription Diet?
Answer

Hill's Science Diet and Hill's Prescription Diet are two product lines from Hill's Pet Nutrition, each serving different purposes. Hill's Science Diet offers cat and dog foods for daily feeding. These diets aim to provide balanced nutrition for pets at different life stages, from kittens and puppies to adults and seniors. They can be bought without a prescription at pet stores, vet clinics, and online retailers. The Science Diet has various formulas to meet pets' nutritional needs, including weight management, sensitive stomachs, and skin conditions. On the other hand, Hill's Prescription Diet offers therapeutic pet foods designed to address specific health conditions or dietary needs. These diets are only given under veterinary guidance and can manage issues like obesity, UTIs, kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorders, and skin allergies. Prescription diet foods require a vet's prescription and are part of a comprehensive treatment plan for pets with specific health concerns. They're more specialized and may not be suitable for all pets without proper veterinary oversight.

Why Is Hill's Prescription Diet So Expensive
Answer

Hill's prescription diet tends to be pricier compared to regular pet food for a few reasons. Firstly, these diets are specially formulated to address specific health issues or dietary requirements, which may involve using more expensive ingredients or specialized processing methods. Secondly, extensive research and development are conducted to ensure these diets are safe and effective, which adds to the production costs. Additionally, strict quality control measures are implemented to maintain consistency and safety, further increasing production expenses. Since veterinarians recommend prescription diets as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, veterinary consultations and monitoring costs may also contribute to the overall expense. These diets are exclusively available through vets or authorized sellers, limiting competition and leading to higher prices. Following your vet's advice is crucial when selecting a diet tailored to your pet's specific needs.

Why Do Vets Recommend Hill's Cat Food?
Answer

Veterinarians often recommend Hill's cat food due to its reputation for providing high-quality nutrition tailored to pets' specific needs. Hill's offers a range of formulas, including specialized diets for cats with health conditions such as obesity, kidney disease, or gastrointestinal issues. Kristin Wuellner, DVM, explains that Hill's Prescription Diet offers a range of foods designed to assist veterinarians in managing various health conditions in pets. These foods have undergone rigorous testing to ensure they meet the nutritional needs specific to the health condition(s) they are intended for. Nutrition plays a significant role in managing certain conditions. These include gastrointestinal issues like soft stools or vomiting, as well as skin or food allergies linked to environmental or food sensitivities. Additionally, weight management for overweight or obese pets and joint health is evidenced by difficulty with stairs or jumping. Nutrition also impacts oral care, which includes addressing bad breath or tartar buildup and addressing aging-related behavior changes, such as increased pacing or disorientation. These diets are formulated based on scientific research and are often backed by clinical studies, giving veterinarians confidence in their effectiveness. Additionally, Hill's products undergo strict quality control measures to ensure consistency and safety, which are essential for pets' well-being. Veterinarians can help support their patients' health and overall well-being by recommending Hill's cat food.Reference: https://www.petmd.com/dog/nutrition/things-to-know-feeding-dog-hills-diet

Where has all the w/d Multi-Benefit Wet Cat Food gone?

So in 2022, I started scrabbling to buy this w/d multi-benefit with chicken wet cat food because I noticed places such as Petsmart, Chewy, Petco stock was hit and miss. My cat Tiger has been on this food for 10 years. I have been rationing Tiger's w/d wet cat food for over 1 year. I have called Hill's Customer Service and have been told the supply chain story and that they were going to have a new wet food mfg facility opening in 2023. But here we are mid 2023 still you cannot find this wet food at all. But strangely there is canine w/d wet food. In my opinion all of us that are holding out hoping for new stock of w/d wet cat food are going to have to find another formula. I am hoping that Hill's will assist with that because they are the best to know what other script cat food comes close to w/d wet cat food mixture.

I would buy this product if it's ever available again.

The canned wet has been out of stock everywhere for most of the last year due to the 3 YO supply chain blah, blah, blah. My Vet advised me to just wet and mash the dry kibble so I've been doing that and it's working out pretty well for my two kitties. Please Hill's just give us an update sometime about the product or suggest a suitable substitute.

HILLS PLEASE RESPOND - product availability?

My cat suffers from what doctors assume is IBS. This product is the only food that helps her and that she likes to eat. It has been out of stock everywhere for the past 6+ months. I get no real answer from Hills except that there is a shortage of supply for this food. Hills needs to take this seriously and provide a timeline as to when this will be available again.

SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE 6+ Months

I have been trying to find more of this wet food EVERYWHERE! It is literally sold out on every website in every store. Does anyone know where to get this wet food? My cat isn't benefiting from eating the w/d dry kibble.

Why try to try buy when Hill's cannot supply!!!

Chewy and others have been out of stock of the Prescription Diet W/D for cats for over 2 months. I called in last week and was told that their supplier could not get the ingredients. How can you claim to be interested in pet health when you don't control your own supply chain and operations. COVID is 2 years old. Maybe these people are just incompetent. Our vet is having trouble getting this product. I have asked our veterinarian to seek other, better suppliers. These people apparently don not have a clue. The product is very good, but if you cannot get it, what good is or the company.

Why is this food unavailable?

This food did wonders for my cat's digestion and she has had no issues in the five years she has been on this diet. Suddenly it is unavailable anywhere with no explanation and has been "coming soon" on this site without any further information. Would like to be able to get some kind of update that would make planning a bit easier around my cat's dietary needs.

Wish there is a small size stew version for cat

My cat doesn't like the texture of this w/d pate, she only eats 1 table spoon when we open a new can, she won't eat it if has been refrigerated, we tried many ways to reheat the food but still no luck. Such a waste. So she is still eating the c/d stew, wish Hill's make w/d in stew for cat too. (They are making w/d stew for dog!)

I will not buy this again

Consistency of the food is wildly erratic. My cat adores this food when it is a firm pate and will not eat it at all when the consistency is looser. Lately all cases are the looser consistency he won't touch. We will not be buying this food in future.

Helped with digestion
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My kitten had diarrhea that wouldn't clear up for months. We tried i/d first on the recommendation of our vet, and when that didn't work she suggested w/d (both wet and dry food). That has helped greatly to firm up my kitten's stools and he likes it too (although he's not fussy!).

Cats like it but the texture is inconsistent
VERIFIED PURCHASER

I have been purchasing W/D via prescription for 2 years now. I only have one store I can get it from and must call them ahead of time to ensure it is available. My big issue is there is no choice of flavors. They only have chicken and sometimes all the cans in a case are very moist and sometimes all the cans in the case are not as moist and the food seems firmer and seems to satisfy my cats more. I supplement it with boiled chicken and high protein food.

Inconsistent Product
VERIFIED PURCHASER

At one point the packaging changed. Since then this product has been very inconsistent. I feel it is good quality but some cases are moist and the cat devours it. The next case of food will be extremely dry and she has no interest in eating it. With having a cat on medications that are mixed in with the wet food this is very frustrating. The price is fine and I would recommend this product if it was the good WD every time (Consistent).

Working well for my male cat
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Hills w/d was prescribed for my male cat following an episode of bladder stones which required surgery. He has been eating this food exclusively for over a year, and is staying healthy. He has lost weight, so I think the calorie count must be low. I feed him a half can three times a day. I do find that my local retail store does not always have this brand, so I can't let the stock run down too low.

Excellent for weight management but too expensive

My vet recommended this food to help us manage our cat's weight. I have used if for nearly three years and our cat loves it and has kept her weight down; however, I am finding that the price keeps going up, and sadly we are now at a point where we really can't afford to buy it anymore. I would still recommend it, but with a caveat re: the cost.

This product helps aide in digestive process for my cat.

I do believe my cat's health would not be as good as it is without your product. She is a 14 year old with intestinal issues and your product does help her stay healthy. However, since this is the ONLY food she eats (approximately one to one and a half cans per day), it is a significant cost to our family, especially since she is also on prescription medication for this condition. I would like to see some kind of "reward" system for frequent users, i.e.: a rebate after purchase of so many; more coupon availability for frequent and return customers, etc.
