Comprehensive Guide To Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food

What Is Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food?

Everyone loves a chunky cat! These furry fluff balls get a lot of love from their owners. Unfortunately, being overweight isn't cute for a cat. Obesity can lead to a laundry list of problems, including glucose imbalances that can lead to diabetes.

Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food helps to manage your cat's glucose levels while providing a nutritious but low-calorie diet that will allow them to lose weight. It is a clinically formulated medical diet that has scientifically proven to reduce your cat's weight and stabilize their blood sugar levels!

Why Is Obesity a Silent Killer in Cats?

Obesity is the most common nutrition-related disorder in pet cats. Your cat is classified as obese when they are more than 20 % more than the standard weight for their size. Obesity in cats leads to a steep decline in their quality of life as it affects their mobility and physical activity.

Being overweight can make osteoarthritis significantly worse, especially in older cats. As the extra weight puts more pressure on the already damaged cartilage, the condition progresses much more quickly than it should. Obesity negatively impacts cats with hip dysplasia and diabetes.

With the rise of obesity in cats, diabetes has become alarmingly common. Diabetes is a condition where your cat doesn't produce enough insulin to regulate the sugar in their blood. Proper nutrition is imperative in cats with diabetes, as blood sugar is directly affected by what your cat is eating.

Diabetes or the inability to regulate blood glucose is dangerous. Because the body cannot get enough energy from the food your cat is eating, it turns to other sources like protein and fats in your cat's body. This results in your cat losing weight at an unprecedented rate even though they might not want to eat.

Other symptoms of diabetes include excessive thirst and urination, dehydration, and nerve damage. Untreated diabetes can lead to acidic ketosis and diabetic coma, both of which can be fatal. If you have a Burmese cat, you should know that they have a genetic predisposition for developing diabetes mellitus.

How Does Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food Help?

Cats who are overweight and have trouble managing their glucose levels need targeted nutrition to help them get the nutrition they need. Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food is made with inputs from vets who are trained to treat these disorders in cats.

Hill's Prescription Diet m/d Glucosupport Feline with Chicken is clinically proven to help your cat lose weight. This diet is made with chicken as the first high-quality ingredient and a minimum guaranteed protein content of 45%. This ensures that your cat isn't getting a lot of carbohydrates that can lead to weight gain.

The amount of protein in Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food helps rebuild lean muscle your cat might have lost because of diabetes. Complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes and flaxseeds slow down the digestion process, giving your cat's insulin time to work on the sugar being released by the food.

Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food is enriched with L-carnitine. Cats with diabetes often suffer from a fatty liver. L-carnitine aids in fat metabolism in the liver and maintains healthy liver function.

How Much Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food Should I Give My Cat Daily?

The amount of Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food you should give your cat depends on your cat's weight and weight goals. You can use the following guidelines:

Your Cat's Weight Weight Loss Weight Maintenance
6 lbs 30 g 45 g
8 lbs 40 g 60 g
10 lbs 45 g 75 g
12 lbs 45 g 75 g
14 lbs 60 g 85 g
16 lbs 60 g 85 g
18 lbs 75 g 100 g

These measurements are given in grams as it is a more accurate measurement than cups. Additionally, these are general guidelines for the average adult cat. If your vet has given you different guidelines to follow for your cat, you should follow your vet's advice.

Animals can react adversely if their food is changed suddenly and drastically. Make sure you gradually transition your cat from their regular food to Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food for seven days. Start by substituting 25% of your cat's meal with this diet, and increase this every few days.

Frequently Asked Questions
  1. Does This Need a Prescription?

Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food is a medically necessary diet and is used to provide nutritional support while your vet treats obesity and glucose imbalance in your cat. This is why you need a prescription to buy this product.

  2. Can I Give This to My Dogs?

You should never give Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food or any cat food to your dogs. Dogs and cats have very different nutritional needs. If you're worried about your dog's obesity or glucose imbalance, you should ask your vet about Hill's Prescription Diet GlucoSupport dog food instead.

  3. Can All My Cats Have This?

You should give Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food to only the cat who has been prescribed this diet. Giving your healthy cats this prescription diet can mess with their healthy glucose levels and cause them to become underweight.

  4. How Should I Store This Food?

You can store Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food like any other cat food. Make sure to keep it in an airtight container away from heat, moisture, and extreme temperatures.

Your cat might take a little time to adjust to the lowered amount of food if they are in the habit of overeating for a long time. You can speak to your vet about cat chews you can buy that are low calorie, or if you can distract them with any other mental or physical stimulation.

Is Hills M/D Good for Cats?
Answer

Yes, Hills M/D is good for cats. Hills Medicine is clinically tested and validated, which makes the cats active within a month. The medicine is having a good amount of omega-3 fatty acid that maintains cartilage. The presence of controlled phosphorus and a high amount of omega-3 fatty acid keeps the kidney healthy.

What Food is Best for Diabetic Cats?
Answer

When you look for the right food in the market, always check the contents of protein, fats, and carbohydrates on the cans or pouches. The feed should not have a high level of carbohydrates. The main content in the diet should be fats and proteins. The animal-based protein diet calories should be 50% or above, and the calories from fat should be around 20-40%. It would be good if the calories from carbohydrates are lower than 10%, but fewer calories are better anytime. Your cat needs a diet that is high on protein and low on the carb it will help in controlling levels of glucose. Whether your kitten is underweight or overweight, you will have to give them these diets to keep up with a healthy size. Many products are available in the market, such as Gluco Support Cat Food that carries very low carbohydrates. You will need to check the label of nutrition while choosing to buy this food.

Why are Diabetic Cats Always Hungry?
Answer

The presence of hormones insulin in the body helps to get glucose from the diet and passes it on in the cell from where the cat gets energy. Diabetic cats are always hungry because whatever they eat, they are unable to use it for energy. There are other initial signs such as weight loss, frequent thirst, and urination. Cats become lethargic and vomit very often. They can become sicker if you neglect proper treatment.

Can Diabetic Cats Eat Dry Food?
Answer

The content in the diet should not have more carbohydrates. Unfortunately, most dry food like kibble comes with a high level of carbohydrates which is not suitable. So, if you are giving dry food to your cat look in for high proteins and lower carbohydrate contents. There are canned foods like Gluco Support Cat Food available in the market. It has a smaller amount of carbohydrates.

How Long Can a Cat Live with Diabetes Without Insulin?
Answer

If your vet recommends shots of insulin for your cat you should not miss even a single one. With the intake of insulin, the levels of blood sugar get maintained. Generally, every insulin shot has a 12-24 hours effect then it subsides. It makes the level of glucose in the blood go high that results in ketoacidosis. Please be aware the effect of insulin will differ for each diabetic cat.

How Do I Know if My Cat is Diabetic in Remission?
Answer

There are four types of diabetes found in cats. If your cat is suffering from type 1 diabetes, there are fewer chances of remission. You will have to give them insulin as long as they live. If diabetes in cats is type 2, it is the result of obesity and a carbohydrate-rich diet, remission is likely to happen if you can give rich protein food to your cat. You should also not miss any insulin shots recommended by your vet. Making your cat exercise will help maintain the weight of your cat as obesity is the main reason for type 2 diabetes. Type 3 diabetes is due to the health condition of pancreatitis and an imbalance in the hormones of a catโ€™s body. The remission is possible here if you give proper treatment for the underlying condition. If your cat has inherited the disease at the time of the birth itself. It is type 4 diabetes. Here remission is highly unlikely, and the cat has to be given insulin shots regularly for a lifetime.

How Many Times a Day Should You Feed a Diabetic Cat?
Answer

You can feed your diabetic cat twice a day. Make sure to give her the insulin right after the meal. Feed your cat the first half of the can with lower carbohydrates and rich in protein in the morning and the other half at night. Insulin should follow after each portion of the feed.

Are Diabetic Cats in Pain?
Answer

Diabetic Mellitus can give neuropathic pain to cats. The nerves get damaged because of a high level of sugar flowing in the bloodstream that brings weakness in the hind legs. The limbs become numb, and there is pain along with weakness.

C
Too small

The tiny pellets are way too small for a cat who doesn't feel well and needs to eat. My cat tries to eat it, but it falls out of her mouth too easily. It's unbelievable to me that this important of a food for cats who need to eat healthy is so small and difficult for them to eat. Please use wisdom and make it easier to eat.

Great food, need better coupons!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

I bought an 8 lb bag of dry and 6 cans a few days ago. My cat likes the food and eats well. He has not had any set backs since starting Hill's Prescription MD. There are no other choices of food to buy for my cats condition. The price is very high and my income is not. I have an obligation to my pet to keep him healthy and loved. The coupons I get help, I sure wish they were a higher $ value.

My cats and the Hills Prescription Diet Food
VERIFIED PURCHASER

I started feeding this to my two cats about one month ago. I started giving it to them gradually mixed with their current food. They picked out the Hills food and left the other. They really enjoy it. I am told it is intentionally made in large pieces so that it helps their teeth when they chew it. They make a little mess around the food bowl but it is worth it.

Too expensive and only one flavor

My cat does not like it much but when that's all there is she will eat it. A case of 24 cans cost way too much and there's only one flavor. I only buy it because I can't find any better option

My pet's weight has been better managed

My overweight cat lost 10 pounds in 2 years

I have a very large set of Maine Coon brothers. One was 19 pounds and the other was 39.8. The vet said they were completely healthy, are a large breed and the larger one will probably never get below 25 lbs. He could barely clean himself from his neck down and was very lazy. After 2 years on the diet, he lost 10 pounds and he's still losing a little every few months. He's still a large cat at 27 pounds, but it's made a big difference. Granted I now have portion control, where I didn't before, and our dog died a few years ago so they are no longer dipping into his food too. But I believe the food has really helped. He's finally able to clean himself "down there" on his own and groom himself again and I'm so happy.

Help's control my cat's glucose level.

Since we started using the M/D and with daily insulin injections our 12 year old cat's glucose reading have been controlled. Our Vet is now going to attempt to reduce the injections with the objective of controlling his insulin level with diet only. That is where we hope the M/D will help the most.

Excellent product but needs to be available in larger size bags, plus there is a need to implement an incentive program for customers who purchase this product frequently. More money saving coupons for the customer with no limitations on how many they get a month, like which is currently done.

A quality product that meets dietary needs for my cat.

My cat was put on this diet by my veterinarian about six weeks ago. I am feeding her the dry and the canned meat. She can't wait until meal time each day and doesn't leave anything in her bowl. Because she is 14 years old now and is showing dietary complications, this quality product gives me assurance she is getting all the nutrition she needs. Great product!

Healthy, Happy, Cats

I have two 6 year old cats who have been eating Hill's since they were eight weeks old. They have clear eyes and silky fur. They seem to really enjoy the food and it has kept them very healthy. I know two vets (who don't know one another) and they both rave about how good this food is for cats. I trust them both and I trust your product. Thank you

My cats love it!

The vet recommended switching from the "regular" science diet to this one for weight control and insulin control. With two cats in the household, I wasn't sure how well this would work out, as they both loved the regular food. But turns out they like this one even better. Both cats are now a healthy weight, and I feel good that I am providing them with high quality, healthy food (that they both like, despite it being a prescription) so they can both live longer and healthier.

C
WD Dry catfood

My vet put my cat on this food because his digestive system is sensitive. Throwing up without hairballs and burping all the time. Yes. Burping. I have never known a cat to burp. He is not diebetic nor overweight, but my vet felt that the ingredients was better for him than over the counter. It is definitely more expensive which is hard on my retirement income. His vomiting has significantly decreased. We'll see where we are with this a month from now. This should give the other food to clear his system and allow this to work full-time. I do wish they would make the kibbles bigger. My cat loves to chew and this is much smaller than his other Science Diet catfood. Chewing helps clean his teeth. He's swallowing and chewing this kind. Again, please make this bigger or odd sized to encourage chewing the food. Thank you!

They love it so I love it

We have 2 cats, one overweight and one just right. Our overweight cat would panic when it was getting close to his canned M//D time. When we switched from Science Diet Optimal Health dry to M/D dry he no longer begs, panics or starts to vomit excessively from stress that his food is a few minutes late. They both are eating the dry formula well throughout the day and night which allows their activity levels to stay consistent throughout. This is very good for the nights, no more 3am wake up calls to be fed. Given their body types I am surprised just how well they are both doing on this food.
