What diets are best suited for cats with kidney disease?
Answer

For cats with kidney disease, it's essential to provide a diet that supports their renal health while still meeting their nutritional needs. Belen Perez Marquez, a DVM and DACVIM in pet nutrition, advises a renal diet with reduced protein, phosphorus, and sodium levels. These diets help reduce the workload on the kidneys and minimize the buildup of toxins in the bloodstream. Additionally, they often contain higher-quality protein sources to ensure essential amino acids are still available while minimizing waste production. Wet food is usually preferred over dry food because it helps maintain hydration, which is crucial for cats with kidney issues.Reference:https://www.vetspecialists.com/vet-blog-landing/animal-health-articles/2024/02/08/ChronicKidneyDisease-in-cats

Is it normal for cats to lose balance and mobility?
Answer

It's not entirely abnormal for cats to experience occasional balance issues or mobility problems, especially as they age. However, persistent or severe issues warrant attention from a veterinarian. Several factors could contribute to these symptoms, including inner ear infections, neurological conditions, arthritis, or injuries. Inner ear infections, for instance, can disrupt a cat's equilibrium, leading to balance problems. According to Amy Flowers, a DVM from the University of Georgia, neurological conditions such as vestibular disease can also affect a cat's balance. Arthritis, common in older cats, may cause discomfort and stiffness, impacting mobility. Injuries, particularly to the spine or limbs, can result in temporary or permanent mobility issues. Regular veterinary check-ups and prompt attention to any concerning symptoms can help ensure a cat's well-being.Reference:https://www.webmd.com/pets/cats/what-to-know-vestibular-disease-cats

How do I know if my cat has kidney failure?
Answer

Symptoms of kidney failure in cats include increased thirst and urination, weight loss, poor appetite, vomiting, bad breath, and lethargy. Diagnostic tests such as bloodwork and urinalysis are necessary for a definitive diagnosis. Angeli Adeen, a pet owner, shares insights on identifying kidney failure in cats and recounts her own harrowing experience. She emphasizes the importance of vigilance, noting that symptoms of acute kidney failure may include lethargy and changes in urination patterns. She cautions that kidney failure can also develop slowly, with subtle or no symptoms initially. Adeen stresses the necessity of regular veterinary check-ups, particularly for older cats, to detect kidney issues early through blood testing. Drawing from her own ordeal, Adeen recounts how her cat's abrupt decline, from lack of energy to near-comatose, signaled a critical emergency. Quick intervention by a veterinarian, including catheterization and IV fluids, saved her cat's life, underscoring the importance of swift medical attention in such cases.Reference:https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-know-if-my-cat-has-kidney-failure

How do you hydrate a cat with kidney failure?
Answer

For cats with kidney failure, hydration is crucial for managing their condition. One effective method is to encourage clients to transition their cats to a canned food diet, as canned food typically contains more moisture. Additionally, advising clients to add water to their cat's food can further increase their fluid intake. Providing fresh, accessible water at all times is essential to encourage drinking. When necessary, supplementation with free water, either orally or through a feeding tube, is preferred over subcutaneous electrolyte solutions to avoid excess sodium intake.

Can cats regain kidney function?
Answer

Cats experiencing acute renal failure (ARF) have a chance of regaining some kidney function through appropriate treatment and supportive care. The prognosis varies widely, with around 50% of cases proving terminal despite intervention. However, some cats respond positively to treatment, particularly if the ARF is caught early and managed effectively. Treatment typically involves addressing the cause of the renal failure, such as dehydration, toxins, or infections. It also involves providing supportive therapies like fluid therapy, medications, and dietary changes. Regular monitoring and veterinary care are crucial to assess the cat's response to treatment and adjust the management plan accordingly. While some cats may experience partial recovery of kidney function, others may require ongoing management to maintain their health and quality of life.

Transition Instructions

Begin the transition by mixing both the current food and their new cat food together. Gradually decrease the amount of the current cat food while increasing the amount of new cat food. Continue to do this over a 7-day period. Transitioning slowly can result in fewer digestive issues and better acceptance of the new cat food. Mix 25% of the new food in with 75% of the current food for the first 2 days, then mix 50% new food with 50% existing food for the next 2 days, then mix 75% new food with 25% current food for the next 2 days. By day seven, you can feed your cat 100% new food.

J
Happy cats

Both of my cats are at their elderly stage in life. They used to love jumping on the couch and looking outside but those jump ups became less frequent. Since adding this food to their diet I am happy to say they are moving and jumping a lot more than they were before this food. I am glad they can now jump to their favorite spots without needing my assistance!

What happened to the j/d formula?

What happened to the j/d formula. Both my cats benefited greatly from this formula. I am so disappointed that you do not make it anymore.

B
Not as good as j/d formula

My old lady was on the j/d formula for a few years and was able to keep up with my 2 year old. When j/d was discontinued we switched to this even though she doesn't have kidney problems. She now struggles to get on the bed and is limping if she plays too long with the younger one. You lost a customer.

J
Life changer!

My 15 year old cat has had renal disease for several years. She also has developed old age joint and mobility issues. I tried multiple glucosamine products, but she is very picky and would not touch the chews, powder or gels. Pilling her daily is not an option. I also tried Adequan but the injections made her ill. When k/d + mobility came out we gave it a try. My picky eater loves the taste and I noticed a difference in her gait and ability to jump up on things within a couple of weeks. Love, love, love this and recommend to all my clients whose cats need a kidney diet.

C
Very greasy, and my cat now refuses to eat it

I'm sure this is a good quality food- when my cat was eating it she did appear to jump better and have improved mobility. Unfortunately, partway through the first bag she suddenly refused to eat it anymore. I replaced the bag, but that didn't do it. She doesn't like the canned varieties either, but she is begging for anything else to eat. Very frustrating. It is a very greasy food- when she took her food out of the dish to eat, it left grease stains on the ground. She used to like the regular dry k/d, but she's not so impressed with that now either.
