Ultimate Guide to Enalapril

Meet the Pet Heart Saver: Enalapril!

Enalapril is a veterinarian-recommended heart medicine that allows blood to flow more easily through blood vessels and to treat cardiac diseases and blood pressure abnormalities in dogs and cats. Enalapril is a daily, oral tablet prescription drug to treat pets that are suffering from serious heart problems.

How does Enalapril work?

Enalapril, the generic alternative to brand Enacard and Vasotec, is the most common among the angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors that dilate (i.e.., widen) pet 's blood vessels, raises blood flow that their heart pumps, and eases the stress on the blood vessels that carry blood to and from the heart.

The compound Enalapril Hydrochloride returns the blood pressure to normal. This makes Enalapril a highly effective vasodilator that manages heart disease, such as cardiomyopathy (i.e., heart disease that makes it harder for your heart to pump blood to the rest of the body) or high blood pressure in pets.

Enalapril contains nutrients that heal the body and reduce the risk of heart failure.

How is Enalapril medication administered?

The Enalapril medication is a once or twice daily, oral tablet. In terms of dosage, dogs ' usual amount is 0.5 to 1 mg every 12 - 24 hours, and cats ' usual dosage is 0.25 to 0.5 mg every 12 - 24 hours.

Enalapril medication starts to work within one to two hours, and the effect lasts for at least 24 hours. Clinical studies show that consecutive use for several weeks has the most effective result on blood pressure, cat and dog heart murmurs, and other cardiac diseases.

What are the precautions of which you should be aware?

Heart medicine for dogs and cats like Enalapril medication can have negative interactions with other non-prescribed medications and other potent drugs, such as furosemide, spironolactone, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

What are the Enalapril side effects of which you should be aware?

Enalapril 's most common adverse reactions reported are vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, lowering of blood pressure, and in some cases kidney troubles (e.g., changes in urination).

What Does Enalapril Do For My Dog?
Answer

Enalapril is an FDA-approved drug for use in dogs with heart and/or kidney problems. The veterinary medicine helps the small blood vessels to vasodilate, or in simpler terms, relax. The vasodilation of blood vessels makes blood circulation easier, thus reducing blood pressure and the load on the heart. Apart from this, Enalapril is used to treat hypertension or high blood pressure in dogs. The medication is usually administered along with other heart medications like beta-blockers or diuretics. When the required formulation or dosage is not available through a manufacturer, it can be compounded by a specialty pharmacy.

How Long Does It Take For Enalapril to Work In Dogs?
Answer

Enalapril should show effects within the first couple of hours in dogs. However, the results of the medication will not be visibly evident in your pet. You'll need to get some laboratory tests to determine if the medicine worked or not. Moreover, for the medication to be effective, it has to be administered correctly. In dogs, Enalapril is usually administered orally through a tablet or syrup. In severe cases, it's also given intravenously through an injection in a clinical setup. There's no rule about whether the pet parent should give the medication with or without meals. However, if your dog throws up after dosing without a meal, ensure to feed with a meal next time. Lastly, make sure that plenty of water is available for your dog when on this medication, and don't stop the treatment abruptly.

Can You Give Dogs Enalapril?
Answer

Yes, while Enalapril is used off-label for many animals like cats, ferrets, and birds to treat certain conditions, it's FDA-approved to be used on dogs. The medication, which is an ACE inhibitor, is also available under brands names like Enacard, Vasotec, Reniten, and Xanef. This means it's used to treat proteinuria, hypertension, and heart failure in dogs. Additionally, the medication is also used to treat chronic kidney disease in dogs.

How Often Should a Dog Take Enalapril?
Answer

For dogs, the usual dosage of Enalapril is capped at 0.25mg per pound of body weight. You should give the medication only once every day. The drug is available in various dosages like 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg tablets. You need to follow your veterinarian's instructions very vigilantly. Usually, vets adjust the dosage of the medication after observing your dog's reaction to the treatment. When your dog is on Enalapril treatment, ensure that there's plenty of drinking water available for them to drink. One of the known side effects of Enalapril is dehydration, which may cause extremely low blood pressure and even kidney failure.

Will Enalapril Make My Dog Sleepy?
Answer

There are several potential side effects of Enalapril in dogs ranging from mild to profound. Some of the side effects include weakness, drowsiness, fever, nausea, and dizziness. Therefore, if your dog appears to be lazy or sleepy, it's a side effect of the medication. If your dog is lethargic for a prolonged duration and is drained, consult your bet immediately. Some of these side effects may cause life-threatening conditions like kidney failure or an unsafe drop in blood pressure.

Should You Walk a Dog With Congestive Heart Failure?
Answer

Congestive heart failure or CHF refers to the condition where the heart cannot circulate enough blood to the body. The most common sign of CHF is continuous coughing along with troubled breathing. This is caused by the fluids in the lung or pulmonary edema. The swollen heart pushes against the trachea, which causes irritation and induces a cough. Dogs suffering from CHF tend to get tired quickly, suffer a lack of stamina, and wouldn't enjoy playtime or walks like days of past. Therefore, you should not force your dog to continue straining physical activities like running or walking. Instead, limit the walk distance to manage weight without stressing the heart.

Is Enalapril Bad for Kidneys?
Answer

Enalapril is a prescription drug to be administered only to the animal for which it has been prescribed. Stick to the exact instructions of the vet to avoid any complications in your dog's health. Dogs on Enalapril require frequent monitoring of various health aspects like blood chemistry, blood pressure, and kidney function. Even though the medication is also used to treat chronic kidney failures sometimes, reports have revealed that it might worsen any underlying kidney issues in some cases. Since the drug is eliminated from the body through the kidney, dogs with impaired kidney function are at a higher risk.

Can Enalapril Be Cut In Half?
Answer

Enalapril comes in 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg tablets, and the ideal dosage for dogs is 0.25mg per pound of body weight. Therefore, it's normal to split Enalapril tablets to achieve the exact dosage. Moreover, cutting the medication in half doesn't affect the potency in any way, so that's there.

In How Many Forms Is Enalapril Available?
Answer

Enalapril is most commonly available in tablet or capsule form for oral administration. However, it can also be compounded into other forms, such as liquid suspensions or transdermal gels, for easier administration to pets with difficulty taking pills.

Is Enalapril Toxic to Dogs?
Answer

Enalapril is generally considered safe and well-tolerated in dogs when used at the recommended doses and under veterinary supervision. However, overdosing can lead to adverse side effects, such as tiredness and weakness.

Does Enalapril Have Any Adverse Effects?
Answer

Yes. As with any medication, there is a potential for adverse effects in some dogs. The most common side effects of enalapril in dogs include low blood pressure, lethargy, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney dysfunction. Rarely, enalapril can cause more severe adverse effects such as anemia, liver dysfunction, or allergic reactions.

What Does Enalapril Do for Dogs With Heart Failure?
Answer

Enalapril is an ACE inhibitor used in dogs with heart failure to improve heart function and reduce the workload on the heart. It works by blocking the production of angiotensin II, dilating blood vessels, reducing fluid buildup, and ultimately reducing the workload on the heart. In summary, Enalapril can improve the quality of life for dogs with heart failure by reducing symptoms and improving heart function.

How Do You Know if Enalapril Is Working?
Answer

Enalapril can show its effectiveness in dogs with heart failure by improving breathing, reducing coughing, increasing energy, and improving appetite. However, it may take several weeks for the medication to take effect, and it's important to monitor the dog's blood pressure and kidney function regularly to avoid adverse effects. Also note that Enalapril's effectiveness may vary from dog to dog, depending on the individual and the gravity of the condition.

What Is the Best Time of Day to Give Enalapril?
Answer

Enalapril can typically be administered once or twice a day with or without food. Some vets would advise administering the medication in the morning or the evening, while others might advise dividing the dose between the morning and the evening. To maintain constant blood levels of the medication, it's critical to carefully follow the veterinarian's recommendations and provide the prescription at the same time each day.

What Is an Alternative to Enalapril for Dogs?
Answer

Benazepril, pimobendan, and spironolactone are three alternative medications that can be used to manage heart failure in dogs in place of enalapril. Benazepril is an ACE inhibitor that works similarly to enalapril, while pimobendan is a positive inotrope that improves heart contractions and cardiac output. Spironolactone is a diuretic that helps to reduce fluid buildup and improve heart function.

Does Enalapril Lower Heart Rate in Dogs?
Answer

Enalapril is not typically used to lower heart rates in dogs, although it can have a mild effect on heart rate due to its action on blood vessels. Enalapril is an ACE inhibitor that works by relaxing blood vessels and reducing fluid buildup, which can help to improve heart function in dogs with heart failure. By reducing the workload on the heart, enalapril may indirectly lead to a slight reduction in heart rate.

Does Enalapril Protect Dogsโ€™ Kidneys?
Answer

Enalapril can help to protect dogs' kidneys by reducing the pressure within the blood vessels that supply the kidneys. By relaxing these blood vessels, enalapril can help to improve blood flow to the kidneys and reduce the risk of kidney damage.

Can Enalapril Be Given With or Without Food for Dogs?
Answer

Enalapril can be given with or without food for dogs. However, if a dog experiences vomiting after taking enalapril on an empty stomach, it is recommended to give future doses with food or a treat to help reduce the risk of vomiting. It's also important to measure liquid doses carefully and to ensure that there is always plenty of clean water available for the dog while they are taking enalapril.

How Many Hours Does Enalapril Last in a Dogโ€™s Body?
Answer

The effects of a single dose of enalapril can last for up to 24 hours in dogs. This is why enalapril is usually given once or twice daily to maintain a consistent level of the medication in the dog's body.

Enalapril Maleate

Enalapril, a generic equivalent to Enacard, is an often prescribed medication by veterinarians to treat cardiac diseases and blood pressure abnormalities in dogs and cats. The most common among the angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, Enalapril is quite effective as a vasolidator in the management of heart diseases, cardiomyopathy and also high blood pressure in the animal. Enalapril is the main component used in the drug. When used in the animal body, the medication helps in bringing the blood pressure to normal, thus easing down the function of blood vessels to carry blood to and from the heart. The medicine also restricts the formation of certain compounds and enzymes in the body, which reduces the possibility of heart failures in the animal. Most commonly, the veterinarian might advice the use of enalapril with certain other medications. Enalapril comes in tablet form and is a prescription drug that could only be obtained by the instruction from a veterinarian.

Enalapril can cause some serious side effects that should be immediately reported to a veterinarian: low blood pressure and resultant weakness, an upset stomach (loss of appetite, vomiting), and changes in urination. Less frequently, Enalapril can cause kidney failure. This most often occurs when higher doses are being administered, and when the drug is being administered to an animal suffering from kidney disease.

Side effects are more likely to occur when Enalapril is being taken together with other potent drugs. Do not administer Enalapril to your pet in conjunction with furosemide, spironolactone or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory.

The drug is not for use in animals that are allergic to the medicine. Use with caution or get the consent of a veterinarian before using Enalapril with any other non-prescribed medication. Certain animals might have issues with very low blood pressure when the medication is administered. Though in rare cases, the medication will have an adverse effect on the blood supply to kidney, causing kidney failure. Go in for timely check-ups as instructed by the veterinarian to help detect such faults. Medication overdose can be fatal.

Adverse reactions due to enalapril might include lowering of blood pressure, diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite and in some cases kidney troubles.

Enalapril is administered orally once or twice daily, based on your veterinariansโ€™ prescribed dosage.

Dogs -- 0.5-1 mg/kg orally every 12-24 hours
Cats -- 0.25-0.5 mg/kg orally every 12-24 hours

The duration of the treatment is dependent on both the condition being treated and the animalโ€™s positive or negative response to the treatment. The treatment should be continued for the length recommended by your veterinarian, regardless of whether the pet is feeling improved or not, in order to prevent a relapse.

Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture.

I saved almost $100 on 3 meds for my dogs heart failure. Initially got meds from the Vets office. Almost $300 for all 3 meds (for 4 months) After spending that amount and realizing I would need refills eventually, I did some research. Coukd not believe the price difference from the Vets office AND OTHER pet med sites! I tell other pet owners to check prices online and go with PetcareRx!!!
