How does Advantage Multi for Dogswork?

Advantage Multi for Dogsis a medication with two active ingredients - Imidacloprid and Moxidectin.

Imidacloprid is a systemic insecticide that binds to invertebrates' receptors of insect nerve cells. The insecticide disrupts and damages the insect's central nervous system (CNS) and the insects eventually die. It kills fleas on contact with dogs' skin and hair coat.

Moxidectin is a powerful avermectin parasiticide and 100% effective heartworm preventative from the heartworm's immature form called Dirofilaria immitis to adult heartworms in dogs. Moxidectin treats intestinal parasites (i.e., hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms). It is also approved for treating sarcoptic mange.

How is Advantage Multi for Dogsadministered?

Advantage Multi for Dogsis administered topically with an easy-to-apply single dose applicator tube (i.e., pipette) directly on the skin between the dog's shoulder blades. The medication should be applied three to four spots along the spine. Advantage Multi for Dogsbegins to kill fleas within four hours.

After applying your pet's treatment, wait several hours to pet him, and 24 hours to bathe him. This is in order for the medication to be properly absorbed into the dog's skin and work as effectively as possible.

Will Advantage Kill Flea Eggs?
Answer

Advantage Multi for Dogs is a drug that is topically applied contrary to the other forms of parasitic elimination such as chewable form. This application of Advantage Multi for Dogs kills adult fleas, flea eggs, and flea larvae, with contact while treating the intended pet. The best part of the use of Advantage Multi for Dogs is that it has the ability to prevent future flea bites. This differentiation can be well understood when you compare the products with other available teak and flea control options. They work by ingesting the drug and thereafter the fleas are killed only when they bite your dog. Thus, helping break the flea life cycle. Hence your furry friend will no longer have to endure any pain that they would otherwise have to face because of those ingestible that you may have administered earlier.

Do fleas cause intestinal parasites?
Answer

Fleas can serve as intermediate hosts for certain types of parasites. Fleas can transmit tapeworms (specifically Dipylidium caninum) to dogs and cats. The life cycle of the tapeworm involves an intermediate host, which is typically a flea. Fleas ingest the tapeworm eggs when feeding on an infected animal's feces. Inside the flea, the tapeworm eggs develop into larvae. If a pet ingests an infected flea while grooming itself, it can become infested with tapeworms.

How do you get rid of parasitic mites in dogs?
Answer

Schedule an appointment with a veterinarian to have your dog examined. The vet will conduct a thorough examination, potentially including skin scrapings or other diagnostic tests to identify the specific type of mite infestation. Depending on the type of mite infestation, your veterinarian may prescribe topical treatments, oral medications, or a combination of both. Commonly prescribed medications for mite infestations include antiparasitic drugs, such as selamectin, ivermectin, or moxidectin. Mites can survive in the environment, so it is important to clean and treat your dog's living areas. Regularly vacuuming carpets, washing bedding with hot water, and disinfecting the surroundings can help reduce mite populations. Your veterinarian may also recommend specific products or treatments for the environment. Mite infestations often require multiple treatments over a period of time to ensure complete eradication. Follow your veterinarian's instructions regarding the frequency and duration of treatment. To prevent future mite infestations, use preventative measures such as regular flea and tick control, maintaining good hygiene for your dog, and keeping their living environment clean.

What are 3 internal parasites that affect dogs?
Answer

Roundworms are one of the most common types of intestinal parasites in dogs. They are long, cylindrical worms that can grow up to several inches in length. Puppies can acquire roundworms from their mother through the placenta or milk, while adult dogs can become infected through the ingestion of roundworm eggs in contaminated soil, feces, or prey. Roundworm infestations can cause symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, and a pot-bellied appearance. Hookworms are small, blood-sucking parasites that attach to the intestinal lining of dogs. They have hook-like mouthparts that enable them to anchor themselves and feed on the dog's blood. Hookworms are usually acquired through ingestion of larvae from contaminated soil, through the skin, or from an infected mother dog. Common symptoms of hookworm infestations include anemia, dark or bloody stools, weakness, and poor growth. Whipworms are thin, thread-like worms that reside in the large intestine of dogs. They are acquired through ingestion of whipworm eggs present in contaminated soil or feces. Whipworm infestations can cause symptoms such as chronic diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, and inflammation of the large intestine. These are just three examples of internal parasites that can affect dogs. Other internal parasites include tapeworms, heartworms, and protozoa like Giardia and Coccidia.

Do dogs need heartworm prevention?
Answer

Yes, dogs do need heartworm prevention. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by the parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis. It is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Heartworm disease is found in many regions across the globe, particularly in areas with warm climates and high mosquito populations. It is a year-round concern in some areas and seasonal in others. Even if heartworm disease is less common in your specific location, it's important to note that dogs can travel and be exposed to infected mosquitoes in different regions. Heartworms reside in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of infected dogs, causing damage to these vital organs. If left untreated, heartworm disease can lead to severe health problems, including heart failure, lung disease, and even death. Preventing heartworm disease is generally more manageable and cost-effective than treating an infected dog. Heartworm prevention medications, available in various forms like monthly tablets, topical treatments, or injections, are safe and highly effective when used as directed. In many areas, dogs are required to undergo annual heartworm testing before receiving a prescription for preventive medications. This testing helps ensure that dogs are not already infected with heartworms before starting prevention, as giving preventives to infected dogs can be potentially harmful.

When should I start heartworm prevention for my dog?
Answer

It is generally recommended to start heartworm prevention for puppies as early as 6 to 8 weeks of age. However, the specific timing may vary depending on the preventive medication being used and regional recommendations. Consult with a veterinarian who can provide personalized recommendations based on your dog's breed, age, health status, and local prevalence of heartworm disease. They will guide you on the most appropriate time to start heartworm prevention. In many cases, a heartworm test is recommended before initiating preventive medication. This is to ensure that your dog is not already infected with heartworms. The timing of the test may vary depending on the age of the dog, the prevalence of heartworm disease in your area, and the recommendations of your veterinarian. Starting heartworm prevention early in a puppy's life is crucial because mosquitoes can transmit the disease at a young age. Puppies are generally more susceptible to infection, and larvae have a longer period to mature into adult worms if they are not prevented. Heartworm prevention is typically recommended year-round in regions where mosquitoes are active throughout the year. In areas with seasonal mosquito activity, preventive treatment may be recommended during the mosquito season.

Not as convenient as pills, but very effective
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Our greyhounds were having recurrent hookworm infections despite their previous medication being used to treat all manner of worms. So our vet suggested we switch them to this. It is not convenient to use since it is a liquid that goes on their fur. It needs to be left to absorb for 30 minutes and they can not lick or rub it off. Aside from that, we have found it to be a very effective medication for them. We have not had a hookworm infection since we started using it 3 months ago.
