Meet the Powerful Parasite Protector: Trifexis!

Trifexis for Dogs is a powerful prescription medication designed to provide comprehensive protection against a variety of parasites. This convenient, beef-flavored tablet not only treats and controls flea infestations but also ensures heartworm prevention and the management of intestinal worms. Trifexis works through the active ingredients spinosad and milbemycin oxime, offering a reliable solution for your dog's health needs.

Key Benefits

  • Kills Fleas and Prevents Infestations: Trifexis kills fleas effectively, including adult fleas and biting fleas, ensuring your dog remains flea-free. It also prevents flea infestations from developing.

  • Heartworm Prevention: Regular use of Trifexis prevents heartworm disease, protecting your dog from this serious condition. It is important for ensuring heartworm prevention, even in cases of existing heartworm infection.

  • Treats and Controls Intestinal Worms: This chewable tablet treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections, safeguarding your dog from various intestinal parasites.

  • Convenient Monthly Dosing: With Trifexis chewable tablets, you only need one pill each month for continuous protection. It is suitable for small dogs and large dogs alike.

How Trifexis Works

Trifexis works by targeting the nervous system of parasites. Spinosad, one of the active ingredients, kills fleas by activating nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, leading to paralysis and death of the fleas. Milbemycin oxime, the other active component, eliminates heartworms and intestinal worms by disrupting their nerve transmission. This combination ensures that Trifexis kills adult fleas and other insects that may cause harm to your dog.

Usage and Administration

  • Suitable for Dogs and Puppies: Trifexis is safe for dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older, weighing at least 5 pounds.

  • For Small to Large Dogs: Available in various doses, including Trifexis green, ensuring the right dosage for different dog sizes.

  • Administer Monthly: Give one beef-flavored chewable tablet once a month with food for maximum effectiveness. This monthly dosing makes it easy to remember and manage.

  • Complete Safety Information: Consult your veterinarian for complete safety information, especially if your dog is pregnant, lactating, a breeding male, or has pre-existing epilepsy.

Important Considerations

  • Prescription Medication: Trifexis is a prescription-only medication; ensure you have a valid prescription before purchasing.

  • Adverse Reactions: Common adverse reactions include vomiting and decreased appetite. If vomiting occurs within an hour of administration, consult your veterinarian as your dog may need a full dose.

  • Not for Use in Pregnant or Lactating Dogs: Safety in breeding females has not been established. Always consult your vet before starting any new medication.

This single tablet that kills multiple parasites is essential for maintaining your dog's health and well-being. Trifexis is a veterinarian-approved dog medication that protects your dogs from various dangerous tiny parasites, internal and external. Trifexis is a monthly, chewable oral tablet that also prevents vicious heartworm disease. Trifexis ensures that your pup is in the best lovable condition that he or she can be.

How does Trifexis work?

Trifexis is a medication with two active ingredients (Spinosad and Milbemycin Oxime). Spinosad is known to prevent and control flea infestations. Spinosad paralyzes the flea through the insect's nervous system and eventually kills the flea.

The second active ingredient, milbemycin oxime, prevents heartworm disease and effectively controls three dangerous intestinal worms (i.e., adult roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms). Milbemycin Oxime is a powerful parasiticide and 100% effective heartworm preventative for the heartworm's immature form called Dirofilaria immitis that is transmitted by a mosquito.

How is Trifexis administered?

Trifexis is administered orally once a month and protects your dog for the next 30 days. These beef-flavored chewable tablets are artificially made from pork-based proteins and hydrolyzed soy. The chewable tablets can be used as dog treats or, most effectively, eaten with the dog's food.

What are the potential side effects of which you should be aware?

Be wary of the use of Trifexis in pregnant or breeding female dogs and epileptic dogs. Trifexis can be toxic if combined with other medications such as medications that contain the ingredient ivermectin (found in Heartgard Plus which is another effective heartworm preventative).

Test for heartworm disease before using Trifexis. The final dose must be given no fewer than three months following the last exposure to mosquitoes. To ensure heartworm disease prevention, observe your dog for one hour after administration. Readminister a dose if the dog vomits.

Trifexis's most common adverse reactions reported are vomiting, lethargy, decreased activity, itching, decreased appetite, and diarrhea. Other dog sensitivities could demonstrate redness on their skin, eyes, ears, etc.

We hope that the below FAQs can answer some of the reviewers' and your concerns.

FAQ
Does Trifexis Kill Ticks?

Before knowing the answer to this question, you must understand what is Trifexis? Trifexis medication for dogs is a beef-flavored chewable tablet for dogs. The Trifexis ingredients include Milbemycin Oxime and Spinosad.

Tick prevention with Trifexis is not a thing since the medication only works on heartworm, fleas, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. For ticks, pet parents need to use the drug along with suitable tick prevention medication.

Does Trifexis Prevent Ticks?

No, tick prevention with Trifexis is not possible because Trifexis is not effective against ticks. So, what does Trifexis cover? The Trifexis medication for dogs prevents heartworm disease, prevents fleas infestations, and kills fleas. It also treats and controls adult whipworm, hookworm, and roundworm in dogs.

Therefore, if you are looking for a medication to combat ticks, you will have to use the popular combination of Trifexis and Bravecto together, where the latter is a famous tick-killing medication.

Is Trifexis for Fleas and Ticks?

If you are wondering, does Trifexis prevent fleas, or does Trifexis kill flea eggs? The answer is a resounding yes. But when it comes to ticks, Trifexis is of no use. This is because Trifexis has two active ingredients, namely Milbemycin Oxime and Spinosad. These are effective against fleas, heartworm disease, and three types of intestinal parasites.

To ensure complete protection for their dogs against ticks, fleas, and parasites, dog parents must consider a combination of products like Frontline or Bravecto for tick control and Trifexis for fleas and parasites.

What does Trifexis cover for dogs?

Trifexis covers three types of intestinal parasites, namely hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. Additionally, the medication also treats and controls flea infestation in dogs.

Trifexis kills fleas within four hours of application, which means it doesn't give fleas time to lay eggs, making it very effective. Lastly, the medication also controls and prevents heartworm disease in dogs.

How Does Trifexis Work on Ticks?

By composition, Trifexis doesn't work on ticks. However, its active ingredients are effective against heartworms, intestinal parasites, and fleas. The Trifexis flea control is the best in the biz as it kills fleas within four hours of landing on your dog and doesn't give fleas time to lay eggs on your pet.

But cannot say the same for Trifexis tick control. To protect your dog against both fleas and ticks, pet parents have to consider using a robust tick preventive measure alongside Trifexis.

What to Use with Trifexis for Ticks?

So, what tick prevention can be used with Trifexis? Trifexis can be paired with any number of products for tick prevention. However, dog parents usually pick options like Bravecto with Sentinel spectrum during tick and flea season.

The difference between Bravecto and Sentinel is that the former is a flea and tick preventative, and the latter protects against parasites. So basically, Trifexis is Bravecto and Sentinel mashed together, minus the tick prevention. Therefore, you can go for Trifexis and a tick collar or shampoo.

Can I Use a Tick Collar with Trifexis?

If you live in an area where ticks are commonplace, it's best to use a tick preventive along with Trifexis. The most common type of tick prevention method is a tick collar.

Dog parents can consider the combination of Trifexis and Seresto collar. Trifexis is an oral medication to be given monthly and Seresto collar for eight months of tick control. For this combination, administer the medicine first and then put the collar on a different day.

Can You Use Trifexis and Tick Shampoo?

Yes, Trifexis is a flea preventive and also helps against fleas and intestinal parasites. But it's not very effective against ticks, and for that, you need additional tick preventive measures. If your dog already has ticks, it's better to use an effective tick shampoo to get rid of existing ticks and use tick preventives like Bravecto or Seresto.

How Effective Is Trifexis for Ticks for Dogs?

Trifexis is not at all effective against ticks in dogs. However, the chemical composition of the medication makes it effective against fleas, heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.

For tick control, the active ingredient required is Fipronil, Permethrin, and Pyrethrins. None of these are present in Trifexis, which makes it pretty ineffective against ticks. Consider using a tick repellant like a collar or chewable along with Trifexis for tick control.

What Species of Ticks Is Trifexis Capable Of Killing?

Any tick preventive medicine needs to have Fipronil, Permethrin, and Pyrethrins as an active ingredient to kill ticks. On the other hand, Trifexis comprises Milbemycin Oxime and Spinosad, which are effective against three kinds of intestinal parasites, fleas and heartworm. Therefore, effectively Trifexis doesn't kill any type of ticks in dogs.

Concluding Thoughts

The most important thing that you should know about Trifexis is its power to protect your dog from tiny parasites and the dangerous heartworm disease.

What Is Trifexis?
Answer

Trifexis is a prescription drug used to prevent and treat flea infestations, heartworm disease, and certain intestinal parasites in dogs. It is a once-monthly chewable tablet used to treat and manage some types of intestinal parasites, such as hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms, as well as to eradicate fleas and stop flea infestations.

What Are the Active Components of Trifexis?
Answer

The active ingredients in Trifexis are spinosad and milbemycin oxime. Spinosad is a pesticide that kills fleas by attacking their nervous system. On the other hand, Milbemycin oxime is an antiparasitic medicine that prevents heartworm disease by destroying young heartworm larvae (microfilariae) and certain forms of intestinal parasites (hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms) by interfering with their nervous system and muscular activity.

Can Trifexis Be Used on Puppies?
Answer

Trifexis for puppies is approved for use in only puppies that are already 8 weeks of age and weigh at least 5 pounds. It is important to consult with a veterinarian before administering Trifexis to a puppy, as the dosage may need to be adjusted based on the puppy's weight.

Can Trifexis Be Used on Pregnant or Nursing Dogs?
Answer

Use of Trifexis in canines that are either pregnant or lactating is not recommended. The prescribing information for Trifexis states, "The safety of Trifexis in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Use with caution in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy." Some studies have reported adverse effects in puppies born to mothers who received Trifexis during pregnancy or nursing, including loss of litter, vomiting, and poor weight gain.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Trifexis?
Answer

The most common side effects reported with Trifexis are vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, and unexplainable weakness. In rare cases, dogs may experience more severe reactions, such as seizures, hypersensitivity reactions (hives, itching, and swelling), or neurologic signs (such as ataxia or muscle tremors).

Can Trifexis Be Given Alongside Other Medications?
Answer

Certain medications may interact with Trifexis or affect its efficacy. For example, medications that increase the metabolism of milbemycin (one of the active ingredients in Trifexis) may reduce its effectiveness. Additionally, medications that affect liver function may affect the metabolism of spinosad (the other active ingredient in Trifexis). As such, it is important to consult a vet before using Trifexis alongside other drugs.

Is Trifexis Effective Against All Types of Worms?
Answer

Trifexis for small dogs is effective against many intestinal parasites, including roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. However, it does not work against all types of worms. Trifexis does not protect against tapeworms or lungworms, other common worms that can infect dogs.

What Is the Cost of Trifexis?
Answer

On average, Trifexis can cost between $100 and $200 for a six-month supply, but prices may be higher or lower depending on your location and other factors.

How Long Does Trifexis Take To Take Effect?
Answer

Trifexis starts functioning right away to eliminate fleas and stop flea infestations. However, the precise amount of time it takes to start working might change depending on the kind of parasite. According to the manufacturer's information, Trifexis begins killing fleas within 30 minutes of administration and can kill 100% of fleas within 4 hours. It also begins working to prevent heartworm disease immediately after administration.

What Should I Do if My Pet Misses a Trifexis Dose?
Answer

It is best to give the missed dose with food as soon as it is remembered and then continue with the regular monthly dosing schedule from that date. Do not give extra or double Trifexis doses, as this can increase the risk of side effects and may not provide any additional benefit.

How Should Trifexis Be Stored?
Answer

Trifexis should be kept at room temperature (68โ€“77ยฐF or 20โ€“25ยฐC), dry, and cold. It should be stored out of reach of children and animals and preserved in its original packaging.

Can Trifexis Be Used on All Dog Breeds?
Answer

Trifexis has been extensively studied and demonstrated to be safe and effective in pure and mixed breed dogs that are at least 8 weeks of age and weigh at least 5 pounds when used according to the label directions. These studies have been conducted on various dog breeds, including purebred and mixed breed dogs, and have shown that Trifexis is generally well-tolerated and effective in preventing flea infestations, heartworm disease, and certain types of intestinal parasites.

Can Trifexis Be Used on Cats?
Answer

No, Trifexis is not approved for use in cats. Trifexis should not be administered to cats or other animals because it is designed primarily for use in dogs. Using Trifexis for cats can result in adverse complications, affecting your catโ€™s health.

Can Trifexis Be Purchased Without a Prescription?
Answer

Trifexis must be acquired with a prescription from an authorized veterinarian because it is a prescription drug. The active ingredients in Trifexis, spinosad, and milbemycin oxime, are classified as prescription drugs by the FDA and can only be dispensed by a licensed veterinarian or pharmacy with a valid prescription.

Trifexis contains:

Spinosad, Milbemycin oxime

If your dog experiences any listed effects, contact your veterinarian immediately. Trifexis is not meant for any Collie breed dogs.

Product description claims: "beef-flavoured" and "The chewable tablets can be used as dog treatsโ€ฆ" but our dog has always absolutely hated taking them. They smell mouldy, and we have to take care to not touch the pill to the outside of the pill pocket we use to trick him. Product appears to work, except the flea protection only seems to last about 23 to 25 days, not 30.
