Is Royal Canin hydrolyzed protein good for dogs?
Answer

Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein diet can be beneficial for dogs with food allergies or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) under the guidance of a veterinarian. Hydrolyzed proteins, which are divided into smaller parts and are less prone to cause allergic reactions, are a feature of this specific diet. For dogs who are sensitive to specific protein sources that are frequently included in pet foods, this is very beneficial. Jennifer Coates, a DVM from Colorado, notes that the hydrolyzed protein formula is designed to be highly digestible and gentle on the digestive system. This can be especially important for dogs with IBD or other gastrointestinal issues. By reducing the potential for allergic reactions and easing digestion, the Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein diet may help alleviate symptoms such as itching and inflammation.Reference:https://www.petmd.com/dog/nutrition/hydrolyzed-protein-dog-food

What are the side effects of hydrolyzed dog food?
Answer

Hydrolyzed protein dog food, often recommended for dogs with food sensitivities or allergies, can indeed have side effects. While it aims to break down proteins to make them less likely to trigger allergic reactions, some dogs may still experience adverse effects. According to Sylvalyn Hammond, a DVM and companion animal general practitioner, digestive issues such as diarrhea, constipation, or general digestive upset are commonly reported. These symptoms may occur due to the altered composition of the food, which can affect the gastrointestinal tract differently than whole protein sources. Additionally, because the proteins are extensively broken down, hydrolyzed dog food may have reduced nutritional value compared to traditional dog food. This reduction in nutrient content could potentially lead to deficiencies if the dog relies solely on hydrolyzed food for an extended period. Therefore, while hydrolyzed protein dog food can be beneficial for managing certain health conditions, it's essential to watch out for any adverse reactions.Reference:https://www.greatpetcare.com/dog-nutrition/what-is-hydrolyzed-protein-dog-food/

What can I feed my dog, who has IBD?
Answer

Dogs with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) often benefit from a highly digestible, hypoallergenic diet. Commercial options include prescription diets formulated for gastrointestinal health or limited ingredient diets with novel protein sources like venison or duck. Homemade diets can consist of cooked, easily digestible proteins such as boiled chicken or turkey mixed with well-cooked white rice or sweet potatoes. Fiber sources like pumpkin or cooked vegetables can aid digestion. Avoid ingredients known to exacerbate IBD symptoms, such as grains, dairy, and certain proteins. Rich Repore, a seasoned pet owner, advises against following social media trends and emphasizes the importance of vet-recommended treatments. Cross-contamination in commercial dog foods can exacerbate IBD symptoms, necessitating careful selection and possibly trials of different brands. Rich discovered stress as a major trigger for his dog's IBD and suggests avoiding situations that cause distress. When considering dietary options, prioritize consistency and quality over fads. Stick to vet-approved diets and monitor your dog's response closely. Remember, what works for one dog may not work for another, so patience and perseverance are key to managing IBD effectively.Reference:https://www.quora.com/What-can-I-feed-my-dog-with-inflammatory-bowel-disease

Why is my dog still itching on hydrolyzed dog food?
Answer

Even on a hydrolyzed diet, your dog may still experience itching if they are allergic to environmental factors. Dogs may experience allergic reactions that cause itching and discomfort when exposed to environmental allergens such as mold, dust mites, and pollen. Environmental allergies are far more difficult to totally avoid than food allergens, which may be managed through dietary changes. Numerous tests, including skin and blood testing, can be used to diagnose these allergies in order to pinpoint the precise allergens. Combining different methods is commonly the treatment for environmental allergies. Corticosteroids, immunotherapy (allergy injections), antihistamines, and other symptom-management drugs may be included in this. Furthermore, your veterinarian could suggest methods to reduce your dog's exposure to allergies. Generally speaking, recommendations include things like using air purifiers in your home or keeping your dog indoors during periods of high pollen counts.

Is hypoallergenic and hydrolyzed dog food the same?
Answer

Hypoallergenic and hydrolyzed dog foods are not the same, although they both serve purposes related to allergies in dogs. Hypoallergenic dog food is formulated to minimize the likelihood of triggering allergic reactions in dogs with food sensitivities. These foods typically contain limited ingredients, avoiding common allergens such as grains, dairy, and certain proteins like beef or chicken. On the other hand, hydrolyzed dog food undergoes a specific processing method called hydrolysis. During hydrolysis, proteins are broken down into smaller components, reducing their molecular size. This process aims to make the proteins less recognizable to the immune system, thus decreasing the likelihood of an allergic response. While hypoallergenic foods focus on avoiding common allergens altogether, hydrolyzed foods alter the protein structure to prevent allergic reactions. Therefore, hydrolyzed food is often recommended for dogs with severe allergies or those who have not responded to traditional hypoallergenic diets.

Pit Bull tummy aches be gone!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Our vet recommended that we switch from grain free chicken free food to this food instead. Although it has an expensive price tag it worked great and our dog no longer has absorption issues. He quickly gained 5lbs within two months of switching food. We had exhausted all of our options before going with this option since it is so expensive but we love the results and we will keep him on it.

Great Product, Horrible access
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My baby girl has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, so her pancreas isn't secreting necessary enzymes to digest fat, protein, and carbs. She also suffered from frequent UTIs. So this dog food was recommended to me by my vet, it works great, she hasn't had a UTI in months so i'm hopeful and her digestion of the food is going great. 24lb bag lasted for 3 months however, they are constantly out of stock on the website and I have to resort to purchasing the food from other sites at slightly higher prices or from my Vet at much greater price. Love the food but wish PetCareRx would have it stocked more
