Complete Guide To Quellin (Carprofen) Soft Chewable Tablets

What is Quellin for dogs?

Quellin (Carprofen) Soft Chewable Tablets is a type of medication that is meant to relieve pain. This medicine is most often associated with orthopedic surgery and osteoarthritis. The tablets are an NSAID or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, a common category of pain killer. This drug is made using the chemical carprofen, which sounds close to ibuprofen.

However, ibuprofen is an over-the-counter medicine, while Carprofen is a prescription medicine. Arthritis is a painful condition in dogs. It affects their joints by progressively eroding the cartilage around the joints. As the cartilage becomes thinner, it becomes increasingly painful for your dog to walk or play.

Quellin (Carprofen) Soft Chewable Tablets help to alleviate this pain. This medicine is approved by the FDA for use in dogs and can significantly add to your dog's quality of life. Since it is in the form of a chewable tablet, the medication is easy to administer to your dogs as well. You can rest assured that your dog has gotten a full dose of his medicine!

What is carprofen used for in dogs?

Carprofen for dogs is most commonly used in pain management for arthritis and reduces pain and inflammation after orthopedic surgery and soft tissue surgery. Surgery can trigger a lot of inflammation in the body as your body recovers from a major operation and your dog's body works overtime to repair itself.

Inflammation can become a major issue if left untreated. It can upset your dog's digestive system and cause several problems like vomiting, diarrhea, and nutritional deficiencies. Inflammation can also increase the risk of heart disease and cancer. These are risks you want to keep as low as possible after something as significant as surgery.

Arthritis is a progressive degenerative disease. While there is no cure, you can manage the pain associated with it to a great extent. When arthritic dogs experience pain, it affects their mobility. Without pain medicine, they can refuse to move much and become depressed. This is where Quellin chew tabs for dogs come in.

With Quellin for dogs, your dog can regain some of the lost mobility. They will not experience as much pain as they were when walking or running. They will want to go out for walks again and will perk up like they used to before. This medicine can have a significant positive impact on your dog's quality of life!

What is the Quellin dosage for dogs?

Quellin dosage for dogs is 2mg per pound of bodyweight daily, or 4.4mg per kilo of body weight daily. Your vet can decide to give this as a single dose, or he or she might divide Quellin into two doses t be given twice a day. If your vet has decided to provide a higher or lower amount of carprofen for dogs, follow your veterinarian's advice.

Quellin for dogs is also used before surgery to reduce the risk and incidence of inflammation. In such cases, Quellin is given to dogs at least two hours before the surgery. Most surgery also requires dogs to not eat before the procedure. Quellin chew tabs for dogs don't contain any protein that could interfere with an empty stomach.

What precautions should I take when giving Quellin (Carprofen) Soft Chewable Tablets?

If your dog is having Quellin for dogs, then there are a few things you should keep in mind. If your dog has issues with any other NSAID or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, then he may be likely to have problems with this medicine as well. You should let your vet know of your dog's reactions before you start this course of treatment.

Along with this, you should inform your vet about any other medicines your dog is having. Your vet should know even if you are giving your dog non-prescription multivitamins so that they can make an informed decision about your dog's treatment.

Additionally, please keep this out of reach from children and other pets. As this is a prescription medicine, you need to make sure no one else has it to avoid possible adverse effects.

These medications are powerful and should only be used under veterinary supervision. Joint supplements like glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega-3 fatty acids are often used to support joint health and manage arthritis symptoms. These supplements are available over-the-counter and can be used alongside other treatments. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, can be prescribed to reduce inflammation and pain. Since dogs are often adept at concealing their pain, you have to pay attention to any changes in their behavior or mobility.

Can a dog recover from arthritis?
Answer

Arthritis is a chronic condition that cannot be fully cured. Once a dog develops arthritis, the underlying joint damage cannot be reversed. However, with appropriate management and treatment, it is possible to improve the dog's comfort and slow down the progression of the disease. The primary goal of treatment is to provide pain relief, reduce inflammation, and improve joint function. While dogs cannot fully recover from arthritis, the right treatment plan can significantly improve their quality of life. It may include a combination of medication, weight management, exercise, physical therapy, joint supplements, and environmental modifications. These measures can help alleviate pain, increase mobility, and slow down the degenerative process. Early detection and proactive management can make a significant difference in managing arthritis in dogs.

How long do dogs with arthritis live?
Answer

Arthritis itself does not directly determine a dog's lifespan. However, the pain and discomfort associated with arthritis can impact their quality of life if not managed effectively. With appropriate pain management, joint care, exercise, weight control, and a supportive environment, dogs with arthritis can lead fulfilling lives. The key to improving their lifespan and quality of life is early detection, diagnosis, and proactive management. Regular veterinary check-ups, appropriate medication, lifestyle adjustments, and a focus on the dog's overall well-being can all contribute to maximizing their lifespan and keeping them comfortable.

Can I treat my dog's arthritis at home?
Answer

Arthritis is a complex condition, and a professional veterinary diagnosis and guidance are crucial for proper management. However, there are some home care strategies that can complement veterinary treatment. Create a warm and cozy resting area for your dog with a well-padded bed or a heated bed. Ensure it's easily accessible and away from drafts or cold floors. Help your dog maintain a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise. Excess weight can worsen arthritis symptoms, so consult with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate diet and portion sizes for your dog. Regular, low-impact exercise can help maintain joint mobility and muscle strength. Consult your vet for suitable exercise options for your dog, such as short walks, swimming, or physical therapy exercises. Learn and perform simple physical therapy techniques recommended by your veterinarian, such as gentle range-of-motion exercises or massage, to help improve joint mobility and relieve stiffness. Use ramps or stairs to help your dog navigate areas with stairs or to get in and out of the car. These devices can reduce stress on their joints and make everyday activities easier.

Adverse reactions may include decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dark or tarry stools, increased water consumption, increased urination, pale gums due to anemia, yellowing of gums, skin or white of the eye due to jaundice, lethargy, incoordination, seizure, or behavioral changes. If you suspect an adverse reaction to Quellin, stop treatment immediately.

Rx only: Indicated for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and for the control of postoperative pain associated with soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries in dogs.

Quellin should be given in accordance with your vet's instructions. Give only the prescribed dosage, and only as often as your vet recommends. Most dogs will eagerly eat the tablet, taking it right out of your hand. Quellin does not need to be given with food.

I prefer to change to Novox ASAP!!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

The value is wonderful because Rimadyl is $80 a month compared to $42 for Quellin, but my dog won't chew the Quellin and I would rather have Novox - it is easier to give her.

C
As good as Rimaydl

I personally feel Quellin is as effective as Rimaydl and switched due to the cost. My two olders labs (12 years old) seem to be doing as well with Quellin as they did with Rimaydl. I only said "Good" on overall rating and effectiveness just because it is hard for me to say "Excellent." I do think that if they were not on Quellin they would really be having a hard time getting up and down.

I take medication each morning and night and my dog is right there waiting for his anxiously. It's funny to see him wanting his medication when I take mine. He knows it's only morning and night so he doesn't go to the shelf asking for it as if a treat.
