What Is Purina HA Used For?
Answer

Purina HA is a hypoallergenic dog food designed for dogs with food sensitivities. It helps manage allergic reactions by utilizing hydrolyzed proteins, breaking them down into smaller components, reducing the chance of triggering allergies. Veterinarians often recommend Purina HA to address skin and gastrointestinal issues caused by food sensitivities. The formulation aims to support the overall well-being of canines with specific dietary requirements, contributing to their health and comfort.

What Is the Difference between Hydrolyzed Dog Food and Regular Dog Food?
Answer

Hydrolyzed dog food differs from regular dog food in its protein composition. Regular dog food contains intact proteins that may trigger allergies in sensitive dogs. In contrast, hydrolyzed dog food undergoes a process of breaking down proteins into smaller fragments, reducing the likelihood of causing allergic reactions. This makes it suitable for pets with food sensitivities, addressing skin and gastrointestinal issues. While regular dog food caters to a broad canine diet, hydrolyzed options specifically target canines with specialized dietary needs.

Why Does My Dog Continue to Itch Even When on Hydrolyzed Dog Food?
Answer

Despite being on hydrolyzed dog food, your dog may still itch due to various reasons. Itching can persist if the underlying cause of the initial discomfort, such as environmental allergies or flea infestations, is not addressed. Hydrolyzed dog food specifically targets protein allergies, so if the itching persists, consult your veterinarian to investigate other potential triggers. It's crucial to rule out additional allergies or skin conditions that may not be solely related to the product.

What Is Hydrolyzed Protein Made From?
Answer

Hydrolyzed protein is typically derived from various sources, including animal proteins like chicken, beef, or fish. The process of hydrolysis involves breaking down proteins into smaller components, making them easier to digest for dogs with sensitivities. In a study involving twelve dogs, researchers compared hydrolyzed chicken liver powder and poultry by-product meal as protein sources. Dogs fed hydrolyzed chicken liver powder showed improved protein digestion. However, these dogs exhibited lower fat and carbohydrate digestion, resulting in decreased energy levels. High-protein diets, regardless of the source, reduce nutrient digestion, causing more fecal output, softer stools, and higher moisture.

What Can I Feed My Dog Instead of Hydrolyzed Protein Dog Food?
Answer

For dogs with protein sensitivities, consider alternative protein sources like novel proteins such as venison or rabbit. These meats are less common in commercial food products, reducing the likelihood of triggering allergies. Additionally, plant-based proteins from sources like peas or lentils can be used as an alternative. Homemade recipes using easily digestible ingredients may also be an option, but it's crucial to ensure they provide the necessary nutrients. Pet owners can consider giving table scraps to their puppies to avoid gastrointestinal issues, as evidenced by a recent study. The study suggests that a diet containing unprocessed meat, dinner table leftovers, and raw bones may protect dogs from stomach disorders.

Is Protein Bad for Dogs with Allergies?
Answer

Protein itself is not inherently bad for pets with allergies. However, certain proteins can trigger allergic reactions. Identifying the specific protein causing the allergy is crucial. Hydrolyzed proteins, broken down into smaller components, are often recommended for dogs with protein sensitivities. These proteins are less likely to provoke allergic responses. If your pet experiences allergies, consider allergen-specific immunotherapy under your vet's guidance. A recent study confirmed its effectiveness by comparing the quality of life of dogs receiving this therapy to those given other treatments. Dogs undergoing allergen-specific immunotherapy showed a significant improvement in their quality of life. After the therapy, these dogs were less disturbed during meals and caused fewer physical disturbances to their owners. It's crucial to identify and manage allergens in the diet of dogs with allergies.

Is It a Good Idea to Give Protein to a Dog?
Answer

Michael Hoover, DVM from the University of Missouri-Columbia, emphasizes that all dogs require protein, and the crucial factor is the quality, not the quantity. He suggests that products with 25% protein derived from less desirable sources like chicken feet, beaks, and feathers may be inferior. In contrast, a 12% protein food that uses high-quality, human-grade chicken meat is considered superior, according to his recommendation. In this scenario, Hoover emphasizes prioritizing protein sources and quality in dog food over focusing solely on percentage.

What Happens if a Dog Has Too Much Protein?
Answer

Friedames, an Animal Researcher, notes that if a dog consumes excessive protein in one meal, the body can't use or store it all at once. Instead, the surplus protein is eliminated through the kidneys and expelled from the body in the form of urine. When this balance is disturbed, it may lead to issues such as disruptions in bone growth or damage to the kidneys.
