Is Purina Pro Plan Good for Large Breed Dogs?
Answer

Purina Pro Plan is good for large breeds of dogs because it focuses mainly on large breed puppies having rice and chicken formula as its main ingredients. It also has Glucosamine that helps in building cartilage and joints. The omega-rich fish oil and DHA enhances vision and brain development. The antioxidants in the diet supplement develop the immune system of your puppies. The mineral, phosphorus, and calcium make the teeth and bones stronger. It assists in the best-suited growth of your large puppy. Enriched with probiotics for better immune and digestive health. The most important and initial ingredient is chicken. The formula of the diet is highly digestive, which delivers the nutrients optimally. Omega-6 fatty acids and Vitamin A nurture the coat and skin. It is free from artificial flavors and coloring.

Is Purina Pro Plan a High-Quality Dog Food?
Answer

Purina Pro Plan diets contain carbohydrates around 44%, fats at around 18%, and dry protein matter of 30%. However, the other products from the same category have carbohydrates at 40%, fat levels around 16%, and protein at around 31%. The comparison clearly shows that Purina Pro has a slightly better advantage over its competing brands. The diet has a near-average carb and fat level and an above-average protein level; when compared to other dry dog foods. Overall, the Purina Pro Plan is a good quality dry puppy food if the emphasis is on nutrient and health features.

Do Vets Recommend Purina Pro Plan?
Answer

Veterinarians usually suggest the Purina Pro Plan as they perform quality testing of their products. They involve the vet nutritionists in their staff to ensure that they produce nutritionally enriched diets. You can also find a lot of variety of pet foods at the grocery store, but they are generally of lower quality when compared to products at pet stores. However, even pet stores are now selling trending diets (like raw, grain-free, etc.) which veterinarians do not recommend. These fad diets are hard to classify on the grounds of quality and nutrition levels. Purina has been in the market for eighty years now and is continuously raising the quality of pet nutrition diets. Experienced vet nutritionists have contributed to developing the Purina Pro Plan, which maintains a balance of all the necessary nutrients required by the big breed pets. Itโ€™s the most recommended pet food diet by veterinarians.

Which is Better: Purina Pro Plan or Royal Canin?
Answer

Based on Ingredients: Both the brands are equally popular and have almost the same ingredients. However, Purina Pro Plans have more emphasis on animal proteins, followed by easily digestible carbohydrates. Most of its diet boosts with probiotics, DHA, and Omega-3 fatty acids. On the other hand, Royal Canin focuses on carbohydrates like corn or brewers rice. When we emphasize big-breed puppy meals, protein is a more popular choice over carb diets. Based on Pricing: The average price of a Royal Canin diet is around $2.62 per pound, and Purina Pro Plan costs $1.79 per pound of dry pet diets. Being very similar in ingredients and less in pricing, Purina Pro gets the preference in pricing too. Based on Variety: Royal Canin has a range of pet food products, with 84 types of dry dog foods and 44 types of wet dog foods. However, Purina Pro has just over 50 types of dry dog foods available in their retail line-up. Royal Canin gains an advantage when we talk about variety in pet meals. Based on Availability: Purina Pro can be easily found even at non-pet stores when compared to Royal Canin. Purina Pro Plan is available at grocery stores, farm supply stores, Walmart, and online shopping portals. You can also get Purina Pro Plan from their website. However, both the brands are very well-stocked at both online and retail pet stores. Although both are good and in the market for a long time. But Purina Pro Plan has gained its advantage to be easily accessible, cost-effective, and nourishing ingredients that benefit our petโ€™s health.

Is Purina One or Purina Pro Plan Better?
Answer

Purina Pro Plan has a wide range of products and also provides better quality when compared to Purina One dog meals. Purina Pro Plan has additional probiotics and omega-3 fatty acids, which are absent in Purina One products. These nutrients positively impact the health of your pet. So, the clear choice here is Purina Pro Plan, but if you are tight on a budget, then Purina One can be a good alternative.

Do Large Dogs Need Large Breed Food?
Answer

Large Breed Dogs tend to grow bigger than average dog breeds and require diets that support their healthy and strong bones. Diets of these breeds should include higher levels of calcium for sustained bone development. Puppy diets for large breeds have a lesser energy quotient to support the growth of their bigger joints and bones. Larger breeds of dogs are likely to have joint issues, so a diet specifically designed for these breeds will keep them moving and maintain healthy joints. An ideal balance of vitamins, minerals, proteins, probiotics, and antioxidants benefits these larger breeds during their lifespan.

What Makes a Large Breed Dog Food?
Answer

A Big Breed puppy diet should include: Low-fat levels, good calcium content, an ideal Ca:P ratio, and high-quality protein. Calcium should be approximately 1.5% (i.e., 3 grams for every 1000 kcal). Giant breed puppies should have diets that have at least 30 percent of high-quality protein content and 9 percent fat. Keep in mind that the quality of protein varies as per the source and so higher quality protein diets can be more expensive.

Feeding for Reproduction: Pro Plan provides the extra nutrition needed by reproducing females in stages of gestation and lactation. Food consumption may vary during gestation, so feed the amount needed to maintain the pregnant female's ideal body condition. Food intake may double or even quadruple during lactation. Provide adequate fresh water in a clean container daily. Puppies start to nibble solid foods at 3-4 weeks of age. Keep moistened Pro Plan available at all times. Allow your puppy to eat at will until fully weaned (6-8 weeks). After weaning, Pro Plan can be fed moistened or dry. For best results, develop a regular feeding schedule such as three small meals a day for younger puppies. You can gradually reduce to one feeding in the morning and one in the evening as your puppy ages. The routine should not vary. As puppies near adulthood, their calorie needs may drop, and your puppy may begin leaving some food in the bowl. Don't misinterpret this as an indication of dislike for the food. Instead, begin offering less so your puppy doesn't overeat and stays in ideal body condition. Nestle Purina Research indicates that avoiding overfeeding of puppies may help their development. Maintaining ideal body condition is key to encouraging proper growth in all puppies, especially large breeds. The indicated amounts are only a guideline. If your puppy becomes overweight, a reduction of your puppy's daily food intake may be appropriate. You may wish to consult your veterinarian about a weight control program. Recommended for Growth: This product is for growth of large breed puppies and maintenance of adult dogs - not for reproducing or lactating females. If you have a pregnant or nursing female, we recommend Pro Plan Focus Chicken & Rice Formula or Pro Plan Focus Lamb & Rice Formula puppy foods.

Transition Instructions

Making the Switch to Pro Plan: Although you'll be anxious to see the difference Pro Plan can make in your dog, please allow 7-10 days to ease the transition from your dog's current food. Each day, simply feed a little less of the previous food and a little more Pro Plan until you're feeding Pro Plan exclusively. This gradual transition will avoid dietary upsets.
