Dasuquin (Nutramax) is the #1 veterinarian-recommended, non-prescription medical supplement for dog joint health. Dasuquin is a daily oral chew that prevents cartilage breakdown to ensure that your furry friend stays active and mobile. Non-prescribed Dasuquin for Dogs is a new breed to improve your dog's quality of life.

What are the common signs that your pet should start using Dasuquin?

Common signs are demonstrative struggles in the performance of tasks that came easy before, such as standing up from a seated position, lethargy in walks, or difficulty climbing stairs.

Dogs with painful arthritis, osteoporosis, or hip dysplasia can be found especially in aging and senior dogs.

How does Dasuquin for Dogs work?

The nutritional supplement contains a comprehensive formula that aids the dog's health:

Joint health and comfort are derived from Glucosamine Hydrochloride (a cushion surrounding the joints), Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate (produces and rebuilds natural cartilage), Avocado/Soybean Unsaponifiables (a vegetable extract with avocado oil and soybean oil that both protects cartilage breakdown from unhealthy enzymes and regenerates connective tissue production), and Methylsulfonylmethane (treats animal arthritis and relieves pain and swelling).

Basic ingredients in pet vitamin supplements are Microcrystalline Cellulose (gives it texture), Magnesium Stearate (flow agent or anti-caking agent), Mixed Tocopherols (extends the shelf life), and Silicon Dioxide is a basic ingredient in pet vitamin supplements.

Basic health comes from Dextrose (used for low blood sugar), Dried Brewer's Yeast (protein, amino acids, B vitamins maintain the body's essential parts), Soy Protein Isolate (lower blood cholesterol and helps with cancer treatment), and Tea (active ingredient catechin inhibits carcinogens, protects the liver and intestines, and protects against oxidative damage).

The ingredient combination and comprehensive formula make for a daily chewable treat that protects and rebuilds your dog's healthy joints.

How is Dasquin in Dogs administered?

The liver-flavored chewable tablet is administered orally and once a day. Dasuquin tablets can be broken up and eaten with food. Dogs should double their daily dosage for the first 4 - 6 weeks. However dogs under 10 lbs. should keep the normal dosage.

The supplement bottles either come in 84 or 150 count and either come with or without the addition of MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). The addition of MSM helps to relieve pain and swelling.

See the dosage chart below for what supplements are available, depending on the dog's body weight:

Medium 30 - 59 lbs. One tablet

What Does Dasuquin Do For Dogs?
Answer

Dasuquin is a supplement designed to promote good joint health in dogs and cats. According to the manufacturer, the medicine is intended to stimulate cartilage matrix production in dogs, protect cartilage, and support joint function. According to American Kennel Club, Dasuquin is the best joint supplement brand recommended by veterinarians. Dasuquin, which comprises glucosamine hydrochloride, sodium chondroitin sulfate, and avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASUs). Some formulations might have methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). Therefore, it's a must to consult a vet before starting the medication.

Is Dasuquin for Dogs a Prescription?
Answer

There are two types of Dasuquin available in the market - Dasuquin and Dasuquin Advanced. While they both have the same active ingredients and same effects on the joint health of dogs, their availability varies. The standard Dasuquin is available over the counter with no prescription. The Dasuquin Plus, on the other hand, cannot be purchased without a veterinarian's prescription. If you're wondering why so despite being practically the same medicines manufactured by the same company. Apparently, Dasuquin has a different formulation with omega-3 fatty acids, turmeric, and frankincense added to it. Moreover, the Advanced version seems to be exclusive to veterinarians.

How Long Can I Give My Dog Dasuquin?
Answer

Dasuquin is sold in two different formulations namely Dasuquin for small to medium dogs and Dasuquin for large dogs. This is because the dosage varies based on the size and breed of the dog. However, what doesn't vary is the duration for which you should administer the medication to your dog. Notably, the duration of medication depends on the comfort of your dog. Normally, the initial dosage for small to medium dogs varies from .5 to 2 tablets a day and for large dogs, it is two tablets a day. The medication should show improvement in your dog's joint health in the first 4-6 weeks. If you see improvement in your dog's condition after this period, the dosage is halved and continued till your dog feels completely better. In case the dog is not showing any sign of improvement, the initial dosage is continued till it does and then halved till it's completely better. For example, a dog weighing under 40lbs with joint pains will need Dasuquin for small to medium dogs, two pills a day for four weeks. After 4 weeks have elapsed, if the dog is showing improvement, the dosage is dropped to 1 pill a day. If the improved condition is maintained, the reduced dosage is administered as long as the dog needs it.

Does Dasuquin Upset a Dog's Stomach?
Answer

Dasuquin is safe for all dogs and the brand claims that there have been no reported cases of safety concerns or adverse side effects associated with Dasuquin. Moreover, there are no known contradiction between Dasuquin and other supplements or medication. However, in a one-off case, some dogs might have intolerance towards the avocado content in the medication and experience mild stomach irritation. In case your dog is showing signs like vomiting, diarrhoea, and/or allergic reaction, immediately stop the supplement and consult your veterinarian. It's advised to consult the vet before starting any new supplement or medication for your dog, even though Dasuquin is believed to be completely safe for dogs.

Is There a Generic for Dasuquin?
Answer

Unfortunately, there are no generic alternatives to Dasuquin or Dasuquin Advanced. The medication comprises glucosamine hydrochloride, sodium chondroitin sulfate, and avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASUs). In case you're looking for a cheaper alternative, Cosequin fits the bill. Cosequin is also a well-rounded supplement containing glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, and manganese. However, the cheaper price tag ironically comes at a cost. Cosequin has a lesser concentration of active ingredients compared to Dasuquin and doesn't have avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASUs) either. Therefore, it's only suitable for dogs with mild discomfort or pain and will not work on some dogs with a higher degree of pain.

Does Dasuquin Make Dogs Thirsty?
Answer

Dasuquin has no known side effects but reportedly it's known to cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort in some dogs and some dogs may experience higher thirst. In such cases, dosage might need a little tweaking to best suit the dog and it's advised to consult before making any changes in the dosage.

How Much Dasuquin Can I Give My Large Dog?
Answer

Dasuquin is sold in two formulations - small to medium-sized dogs and large dogs. You will require the latter for your dog if it weighs above 6lbs. The dosage include 2 tablets once a day for the first 4 week or till your dogs shows signs of improvement. After your cabin friend starts showing improvement, the progress has to be maintained with 1 tablet a day till the day your dog needs it.

Do joint supplements for dogs really work?
Answer

Joint supplements are commonly recommended by veterinarians as a safe long-term treatment to help support joint health in dogs. They may contain ingredients such as glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, and omega-3 fatty acids that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and joint-protective properties. These supplements are often used as complementary therapy to other treatments for joint conditions in dogs, such as weight management, physical therapy, and pain management medications. While joint supplements may not provide immediate relief of symptoms, they can help to slow down the progression of joint damage and reduce inflammation over time.

What vitamins help a dog's joints?
Answer

There are several vitamins and minerals that can help support joint health in dogs. Vitamin C has antioxidant properties and helps to reduce inflammation in the joints. Like vitamin C, vitamin E is an antioxidant that can help to reduce inflammation and protect joint tissues from damage. Vitamin D helps to regulate calcium and phosphorus levels in the body, which are important for bone health. Omega-3 fatty acids are healthy fats that can help to reduce inflammation in the joints and support overall joint health. They are commonly found in fish oil supplements. Glucosamine and chondroitin are two supplements often used together that can help to support joint health and reduce inflammation. MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is a naturally occurring sulfur compound that can help to reduce inflammation and support joint health. While these vitamins and supplements can be beneficial for joint health, they should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for joint conditions and under the guidance of a veterinarian.

At what age can dogs start joint supplements?
Answer

Dogs can start taking joint supplements at any age, but the need for joint supplements typically increases as dogs age and begin to experience joint wear and tear. For example, larger dog breeds are more prone to joint issues and may benefit from starting joint supplements earlier in life, around 1-2 years of age. On the other hand, smaller dog breeds may not need joint supplements until they are older.

How can I strengthen my dogโ€™s joints?
Answer

To help strengthen your dog's joints, you can focus on exercises that target the muscles surrounding the joints. These exercises can help to improve joint stability and reduce the risk of injury. Sit-to-stand involves having your dog sit, then stand up from a sitting position. This exercise can help to build strength in the hind legs and improve joint stability. Walking on uneven surfaces, such as grass or sand, can help to build strength in the legs and improve balance and coordination. Climbing stairs can help to build strength in the hind legs and improve joint stability. Balancing exercises, such as standing on a balance pad or wobble board, can help to improve joint stability and proprioception (awareness of body position). Swimming is a low-impact exercise that can help to build strength in the legs and improve joint mobility. These exercises should be tailored to your dog's individual needs and conditions. You should always start with gentle exercises and gradually increase the intensity and duration over time.

How can I help my dog's joints naturally?
Answer

There are several ways to help support your dog's joint health naturally. A balanced and nutritious diet that includes essential vitamins and minerals can help to support overall joint health. Look for dog food that contains ingredients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, glucosamine, and chondroitin. Excess weight can put additional stress on your dog's joints and increase the risk of joint damage. Work with your veterinarian to develop a healthy weight management plan for your dog. Joint supplements containing glucosamine, chondroitin, and other ingredients can help to support joint health and reduce inflammation. Choose high-quality supplements from reputable sources and work with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate dosage for your dog. Regular exercise can help to build muscle and support joint health. Choose low-impact exercises that are appropriate for your dog's age and condition, such as swimming, walking, or gentle play. Certain natural remedies, such as turmeric and ginger, can have anti-inflammatory effects that may help to reduce inflammation in the joints. However, consult with a veterinarian before using any natural remedies to ensure their safety and effectiveness for your dog. Environmental modifications, such as providing ramps or stairs, can help to reduce stress on the joints and make movement easier for your dog.

My dog is 7 and began with a slight limp. I asked my vet what joint supplement he would recommend for Remi (golden retriever and poodle mix) and this is what he suggested. Remi no longer has a limp. Have not been using long enough to know of long term effects but she loves the taste of the tablets and I have peace of mind knowing Iโ€™m doing what I can for her joint health!

Not sure if it helps
VERIFIED PURCHASER

I'm on my second order, & there have not been any dramatic improvements in how my dog feels in the morning, still seems to be stiff. However, I got Gallaprant with a vet's prescription, & that product seems to help a lot; he definitely seems to be able to get around easier in the mornings on it. I ran out of Gallaprant & did not realize I had to mail the prescription, so my dog was on just Dasuquin for about a week while I waited for the prescription to get to PetCareRx via mail, & waited for it to be shipped, & during that time, it seemed like his hips were definitely bothering him more.

Great Results
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My dog has had hip dysplasia for about 4 years now and my vet recommended Dasuquin before we talked about surgery and I'm so glad he did. He went from being very lightweight on his back legs to running like nothing was bothering him in about a month. One thing I wish they would offer are a variety of flavors. He's been taking Dasuquin for so long he's tired of them. Even if I break them up in his food, if he smells it, he won't eat his food. It's getting very hard to make him take them even though he needs them so bad. But overall, when my dog takes them he feels so much better.
