Sucralfate is an anti-ulcer drug indicated for managing gastric and intestinal ulcers in cats and dogs. This medicine reacts with the gastric juice and forms a thick substance that gets coated in the ulcerated areas. Sucralfate has proven efficacy in treating ulcers of mouth, esophagus, stomach and intestinal ulcers. It is also found useful in preventing gastritis caused by aspirin like ulcerogenic drugs, and in managing acid reflux disease of esophagus.
Sucralfate is available in 1 gm scored tablets as well as in 1g/10 ml suspension. The normal dose to small dogs and cats would be 1/4 to 1/2 gram, given every six to eight hours. Medium to large dogs could be administered 1/2 to 1 gram. It is preferable to give the medication on an empty stomach or after 1-2 hours after a meal.Sucralfate is easily soluble in water and this suspension could be easily administered orally using a syringe in animals, which are difficult to pill. The duration of the therapy would greatly depend on the disease condition as well as the response of the animal to the medication.
