Just like the human epidemic, almost 50% of the pet population is overweight. Even a little extra weight can impact the pets quality of life and relationship with family because that extra weight can reduce play time, impact mobility and affect the lifelong general health of your dog. Hill's nutritionists & veterinarians developed Prescription Diet r/d clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your dog's weight management. In fact, r/d is clinically proven nutrition for healthy weight loss in just 8 weeks.

Hill's Prescription Diet r/d Weight Reduction Canned Dog Food stands out as a scientifically formulated solution grounded in clinical nutrition to address the intricate aspects of canine weight management. This specialized diet is designed to go beyond simple caloric restriction, incorporating key ingredients that play vital roles in modulating metabolism and promoting optimal health.

  • L-carnitine for Fatty Acid Metabolism:Including therapeutic levels of L-carnitine is crucial for canine weight management. L-carnitine is an essential amino acid known for its pivotal role in fatty acid metabolism. By aiding in the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria, L-carnitine facilitates their conversion into energy. This process not only helps dogs metabolize fat efficiently but also contributes to the preservation of lean muscle mass during weight reduction.

  • Lysine for Protein Synthesis and Immune Function:Furthermore, the presence of lysine in Hill's Prescription Diet r/d adds another layer of nutritional support. Lysine is an essential amino acid in protein synthesis and immune function. Maintaining adequate protein levels in weight management is essential to preserve muscle mass, and lysine contributes to this aspect.

  • Optimal Fiber Blend for Comprehensive Weight Reduction:The optimal blend of soluble and insoluble fiber in this canned dog food is a multifaceted weight reduction approach. Soluble fiber helps create a feeling of fullness, reducing the likelihood of overeating, while insoluble fiber supports gastrointestinal health. The careful balance of these fibers contributes to a comprehensive solution for weight management, promoting satiety and aiding in the digestive process.

  • Cardiovascular Health Support:Addressing the cardiovascular aspect, the formulation also aims to maintain healthy triglyceride and cholesterol levels. This is crucial for dogs undergoing weight reduction, as imbalances in lipid profiles can impact cardiovascular health. The thoughtful combination of nutrients in Hill's Prescription Diet r/d supports weight loss and the overall well-being of the cardiovascular system.

  • Texture and Taste Appeal:The ground texture of the canned food adds a tactile dimension to the diet, making it appealing to dogs and enhancing the overall feeding experience. Combining this with an irresistible taste ensures a smooth dietary transition, even for dogs with discerning palates.

Hill's Prescription Diet r/d Canine is a complete and balanced food that provides all the nutrition your dog needs during weight loss. Please consult your veterinarian for further information on how our Prescription Diet foods can help your dog to continue to enjoy a happy and active life.

Use only as directed by your veterinarian. This product is intended for intermittent feeding only.

How do you feed an overweight dog?
Answer

Feeding an overweight dog requires a careful balance of nutrients to promote weight loss while maintaining overall health. Increasing protein intake is crucial as it helps to support lean muscle mass and keep your dog feeling full for longer periods. Opt for lean protein sources such as chicken, turkey, or fish. Alycia Washington, a DVM from North Carolina, notes that incorporating vegetables into your dog's diet provides essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber without adding excess calories. Non-starchy vegetables like broccoli, green beans, and celery are excellent choices. Including small amounts of fruits like apples or berries can offer additional nutrients and natural sweetness without spiking blood sugar levels. Healthy fats, such as those found in eggs or sardines, provide essential fatty acids and help keep your dog's coat and skin healthy. Regular exercise should also be part of your dog's weight management plan.Reference:https://www.thesprucepets.com/best-vegetables-to-feed-your-dog-5101206

Why isnโ€™t my dog losing weight?
Answer

If your dog isn't losing weight despite dietary adjustments, several factors may contribute. Firstly, ensure you're accurately measuring food portions and avoiding excessive treats or table scraps. Consider your dog's activity level; some breeds or individuals may have lower metabolic rates, requiring stricter calorie control. Amy Flowers, a DVM from the University of Georgia, notes that health issues such as hypothyroidism could also hinder weight loss and should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Additionally, aging can slow metabolism, necessitating dietary modifications. Incorporating more physical activity through increased walks or playtime can aid weight loss efforts. Monitoring progress with regular weigh-ins and adjusting the diet accordingly ensures gradual, sustainable weight loss. Consulting with a canine nutritionist can provide tailored guidance for your dog's specific needs, fostering a healthier lifestyle and achieving weight loss goals effectively.Reference:https://www.webmd.com/pets/dogs/hypothyroidism-in-dogs

Will walking help my dog lose weight?
Answer

Yes, walking can be a highly effective component of a weight loss regimen for dogs. Similar to humans, regular physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy weight and overall fitness level in dogs. Walking provides numerous benefits, including burning calories, improving cardiovascular health, strengthening muscles, and enhancing mental stimulation. When walking your dog for weight loss, it's important to establish a consistent routine and gradually increase the duration and intensity of the walks. Additionally, incorporating activities such as brisk walking, hiking, or playing fetch can further enhance calorie burning and muscle building. Phil Kahler, a pet owner, emphasizes that the required amount of walking for dogs varies depending on their breed. For instance, he observes that his son's Yorkie doesn't require much walking. This is because its small legs would find traveling a quarter of a mile quite strenuous. In such cases, consistency in walking frequency is more crucial than covering substantial distances. Conversely, for larger, high-energy breeds like Huskies, Phil acknowledges the need for more rigorous exercise routines and longer walks to keep them healthy.Reference:https://www.quora.com/How-much-walking-does-a-dog-need-daily?no_redirect=1

Can a dog lose weight in 10 days?
Answer

Yes, a dog can lose weight in 10 days, but it's crucial to prioritize gradual, healthy weight loss. Rapid weight loss isn't ideal as it can result in muscle loss. Aim for a gradual reduction of around 1% to 2% of the initial body weight per week. Over a 10-day period, this could equate to a modest yet safe weight loss. Implementing a balanced diet with portion control and regular exercise tailored to the dog's needs is essential.

I can not find this anywhere

We started feeding our dogs this food and the last 6 months or so we can not find it anywhere. What's up?

Our Bichons lived long happy lives (17 and 18 yrs) on this.

Have used this for our Bichons for 15 years. They passed away last year at 17 and 18. We now have a ten year old Brussels Griffon rescue. He's too fat so we've put him on it. We are still adjusting the amount he gets, but he's thriving. I just wish you went back to the old can kids. I have arthritis in my hands and pull tops are painful to use. Also, I like to slide the food out and slice off the portions. Very neat and easy. Now I have to wash a measuring cup every time I feed him--3 times a day. Please make the old can lids an option.

the food is okay but it could be made different

I think the dogs would like a variety sometimes it could be like the other diet food such as beef of chicken chunks in gravy

B
Product maintains my dogs weight

This is the only dog food we have given our dogs since they were one year old. They are now 10 years old and very healthy. We do not have to keep them on the r/d food but choose to because they love it and I do not have to worry about their weight. I only wish you would allow more coupons to be printed, due to the fact I have more than one dog!!! I do not know how much longer we will be able to afford this, because everytime I purchase a new case, the price keeps increasing. FYI, the coupons make it more affordable.

Excellent product but really pricey

Hill Prescription Diet R/D will help you get your dogs weight down, but the price is always a big turn off. I would not have bought it if the reputation wasn't so good, but it will definitely help your dog get his weight down.

excellent weight loss

Tried hard for weight reduction with dry sensitive dog food but it didn't work. I talked to our vet and he recommended the Hills R/D canned dog food. Our 'baby' (Boston Terrier) lost six pounds in five weeks feeding her per the vets instructions. She looks so much better and is more active now. She's six years old and acts like 3 years old. I would recommend this dog food to anyone who is trying to help there dog loose a few pounds. Less weight, live longer!

Good food for my dog.

This is a very good product. My dog loves it and it good with his digestive system. I want to feed him everyday with it but when you live on a budget, sometimes it hard to buy it. I give him dry food in the mornings and wet for dinner. My dog is on the heavy side and he needs to lose wight. This food helps him lose wight and at the same time he likes it.

To expensive

One of my dogs lost no weight in a three month period. The other dog lost a pound(shi-tzu). The cans are too expensive.

E
Cost Factor

Maggie is a Sheltie and I have to watch her weight. The new weight loss food was more expensive and she does not do well with a diet change. I loved the $7 off coupons, because I only work part-time after being downsized and I am in grad school. But when you can only print 1 or 2 a year, when one a month would be most helpful in these hard economic times, it forces me to find other food that will fit my budget for that month.
