Why should your dog eat Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food?

Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians manufactured Prescription Diet k/d specifically for renal dogs to support their kidney function and help sustain muscle mass. The nutrition of k/d is clinically tested nutrition to improve & lengthen quality of life.

How does Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food work?

The kidneys' role is to filter waste and toxins from the blood, such as phosphorus and sodium, to maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. As pets get older, decreased kidney function (i.e., renal dogs) is more likely to occur. Dogs then experience a decreased appetite, caloric intake, and loss of muscle mass.

This recipe creates an unfavorable environment for the formulation of kidney crystals and stones by controlling the kidney's phosphorus and sodium levels, protects essential kidney and heart function via its amount of L-Carnitine and omega-3 fatty acids, and supports dogs' natural ability to build lean muscle via the food's high level of amino acids.

Hill's new Enhanced Appetite Trigger (E.A.T.) Technology has specially tailored to renal dogs in the future in Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Canned Cat Food improved kidney care by stimulating their appetite and increasing their caloric intake.

Nutritional Value

The Hill's Prescription Diet k/d products list their specific ingredients. Below are the crude nutritional values in protein, fat, and fiber:

Crude Protein (12.0 %) is the measure of all sources of nitrogen and includes nonprotein nitrogen, which may have no human value. Crude protein is a chemical analysis of the protein (e.g., chicken, milk, etc.) and non-protein (e.g., grains) amounts in the food.

Crude Fat (18.0 %) is the term for fat-soluble materials such as lipid content in your dog's food when ingested.

Crude Fiber (5.0 %) is a measure of indigestible cellulose, pentosans, lignin, and other components of this type of chemical fibers. A highly digestible fibrous food boosts the healthy absorption of essential vitamins and minerals. It provides major intestinal tract peristalsis, a wave-like muscle contraction to relax the stomach muscles.

What is the canine renal diet offered by Hills?
Answer

The Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food is a clinically proven nutrition enriched veterinary diet for dogs. It is given to them so that dogs can carry out all sorts of vital kidney functions without any problem while helping them sustain muscle mass. Like in the case of humans, a dogโ€™s kidney too can suffer from any kind of kidney disease. And as a result of that, your dog will not be able to carry on with its regular happy and active life. Hence, the canine renal diet offered by Hills makes sure that no vital kidney function in your dog is hampered due to such diseases or problems.

What is the best dog food for kidney disease?
Answer

The Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care is the best dog food for kidney diseases. This prescription dry food will help support your dogโ€™s vital kidney functions. It is not only nutritious but tasty as well (for your dogs, of course). The dry food contains a chicken flavor, which makes the Hillโ€™s k/d Kidney Care diet more appealing to your dogs (in terms of taste and smell).

How quickly does Hills C D work?
Answer

Hillโ€™s C/D takes around 7 days to work.

Do you need a prescription to buy Hill's Prescription Diet?
Answer

Yes, you need a prescription to buy Hillโ€™s prescription diet. Since it is a clinically manufactured food, it needs to be provided in the right amounts, and under the right circumstances. Your vet will be able to determine all those things for you. Hence, you should consult your veterinarian before feeding your pet dog Hillโ€™s prescription diet.

What dog food is best for urinary tract health?
Answer

The Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care is the best dog food for urinary tract health. Your dogโ€™s urinary tract health depends on how well-functioning its kidneys are. For some reason, if its kidneys are damaged or not working properly, it will not have sound urinary tract health. This is where the Kidney Care diet from Hillโ€™s comes into play. It provides the necessary nutrients at the right amounts to ensure healthy kidney functioning, as well as a healthy urinary tract.

What foods are hard on the dog's kidneys?
Answer

Foods that contain protein, sodium (salt), or phosphorus are hard on the dogโ€™s kidneys. Protein diets not only worsen kidney functions but can also trouble the heart. Due to protein metabolism, your dog has to eliminate a lot of waste products. Now, what happens when you increase the amount of protein in their diet? The answer is simple โ€“ they have to excrete an increased amount of waste products. However, since the dogโ€™s kidneys are not functioning properly, it will be hard for them to get rid of the excess waste. Sodium (salt), on the other hand, will lead to the removal of less water, which in turn will increase blood pressure. That will end up putting pressure on the kidneys. Phosphorus can lead to blocks inside the kidney and its tubes. Hence, the already damaged kidneys will become more damaged.

What foods help repair dog kidneys?
Answer

Foods with low phosphorus, protein, and sodium content, and a decent amount of omega-3 fatty acids (obtained from fish oil) help repair dog kidneys. Since their kidneys are not functioning as normal, it is better not to give your dog food with excessive amounts of protein, sodium, or phosphorus. The number of toxins produced from these food items will be too much for their kidneys to deal with. Omega-3 fatty acids, on the other hand, will help repair your dogโ€™s kidneys. Their presence inside the dogโ€™s body helps limit the pressure in certain kidney structures that are vital to the toxin elimination process. Besides, they also help remove creatinine, a protein waste, which in turn improves the kidneyโ€™s functioning.

What human food can dogs with kidney disease eat?
Answer

Human food that dogs with kidney diseases can eat include baby carrots, broccoli, slices of apple, banana, green beans, and air-popped popcorn (make sure it has no salt or butter content in it). The most important job of the kidneys is to expel toxins out of the body. They do so by getting rid of excess protein content in the body. And since your dog is suffering from kidney-related diseases, its kidneys must be having difficulties in expelling the toxins. Hence, you need to provide low-protein and low-sodium food options to your dogs. That way, it does not have to put too much pressure on its kidneys while trying to get rid of the excess protein from high-protein or sodium diets.

Is Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food good for all dog breeds?
Answer

Yes, it can be used on all breeds with a kidney deficiency. However, Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food is formulated specifically for dogs with kidney disease or renal insufficiency. It is not suitable for all dog breeds and should only be used under the guidance of a veterinarian who has diagnosed your dog with kidney problems. Dogs with healthy kidneys have different nutritional needs than those with kidney disease, so feeding them a kidney care diet like Hill's k/d without a medical reason may not provide the balanced nutrition they require.

How often should I feed my dog this Hill's Prescription Kidney Care Dry Dog Food?
Answer

In general, dogs with kidney disease may require more frequent feeding to help manage their symptoms and maintain their overall health. Instead of serving your pet one or two large meals during the day, your veterinarian may advise giving them several smaller meals throughout the day. They may also recommend additional dietary modifications, such as reduced protein intake, to help manage your dog's condition.

Should this Kidney Care Dry Dog Food be used as regular dog food?
Answer

No, it should not. Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food is a customized diet for dogs suffering from kidney disease or renal insufficiency. It is not meant to be fed to healthy dogs on a regular basis or used as a long-term diet for dogs without renal issues.

Is it recommended to mix Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food with other canine meals?
Answer

As a general rule, it is not recommended to mix a Kidney Care Dry Dog Food with other dog foods, unless specifically directed to do so by your veterinarian. Hill's k/d is a specialized diet that is carefully formulated to meet the unique nutritional needs of dogs with kidney disease or renal insufficiency. Mixing this diet with other foods may alter the nutrient balance and compromise the effectiveness of the diet in managing your dog's condition. Additionally, if you mix Hill's k/d with other dog foods, it may be difficult to determine exactly how much of each food your dog is consuming. This can make it challenging to monitor your dog's nutrient intake and make adjustments to its diet as needed.

Is Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food a good pick for pups?
Answer

While it may not cause any harm, Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food is formulated for adult dogs with kidney disease or renal insufficiency. It is not suitable for pups because their dietary needs differ from those of adult dogs. Due to their quick growth and development, puppies need more protein and energy than older dogs. Feeding them a specialized diet designed for dogs with kidney disease may not provide the balanced nutrition they require for healthy growth and development. If you have a puppy and are concerned about its kidney health, it is important to consult with a veterinarian.

For how long should my dog be on this Kidney Care Prescription Food?
Answer

Your dog's continued consumption of Hill's Prescription Diet k/d renal Care Dry Dog Food will rely on a number of variables, including the degree of severity of your dog's renal illness, the state of his or her general health, and the advice of your veterinarian. In order to control their symptoms and stop the condition from becoming worse, dogs with chronic kidney disease or renal insufficiency will typically need continual nutritional treatment.

Can Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food be used alongside medications?
Answer

Yes, Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food can be used alongside medications that your veterinarian has prescribed to manage your dog's kidney disease or any other health conditions. In fact, the use of specialized diets like Hill's k/d is often recommended in conjunction with medications to help manage the symptoms of kidney disease and improve your dog's overall health.

Can Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food prevent my dog from developing kidney problems?
Answer

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent kidney disease in dogs, feeding Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food to a healthy dog without kidney problems is not recommended as a preventative measure. Hill's k/d is a specialized diet designed to manage the symptoms of chronic kidney disease and renal insufficiency in dogs and is not used for prevention.

Can Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food be used in canines with gastrointestinal issues?
Answer

No, Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Dog Food is not meant to be used in dogs with gastrointestinal problems. It is specifically created to address the special nutritional needs of dogs with kidney disease or renal insufficiency. However, Hill's Pet Nutrition does have a line of prescription diets, such as Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Digestive Care, Hill's Prescription Diet z/d Skin/Food Sensitivities, and Hill's Prescription Diet d/d Skin/Food Sensitivities, that are intended to support gastrointestinal health in dogs.

Why did you change formula?

Why did you change the formula? I just bought an 8.5 lb bag from chewy with surprisingly new formula. Recently had bought 17 lb bag- now it's old formula. Vet said I need to transition old to new slowly over # of days. The 17 lb bag is now wasted. Why did you change formula? Notice new formula has chicken vs.pork fat etc.

My dog won't eat the new k/d formula

My dog has been eating the hills k/d food for over 2 years. After the recent change in recipe she will no longer eat it. My dog NEEDS to be on this food to keep help her kidney disease under control. Why did they change the formula? I've been buying this food on an automatic delivery schedule for over a year and the last bag I got was the new formula and my dog hates it and refuses to eat it.. Now I'm stuck with a bag of food that cost me over $100 that my dog won't eat.

My dog won't eat the new k/d recipe

My dog has been on the k/d food for over 2 years but doesn't like the new recipe. I made sure to make a gradual change from the old to the new recipe but now she is refusing to eat her food. She needs to be on the special food due to her chronic kidney disease. She liked the old recipe and would gobble it up as soon as I put it in her bowl but since we got the new k/d she won't eat. I don't know what to do, I have a bag of dog food that cost over $100 that my dog won't eat. ]

Our dog does not like the new taste

Our dog has been on the dry k/d chicken food for about two years. My husband did not notice the sticker about the change in the formula. With the new food, she took from the morning feeding to the afternoon feeding to gradually eat it. We started wetting the food which helped. When she first rejected it, I searched online for word about a change in the food, but did not find anything. Last week I searched again and found the notice. We found some food left from the former formula and she ate that fine. We will try another brand of kidney diet food.

My dog, a great eater, won't eat this food.

I have a 13 year old lab who has developed kidney disease. He has always loved his food and licked the bowl. When I started adding this food he started leaving food in his bowl. Now that he is totally on K/D i add lots of the canned and he still won't finish a bowl. Two days ago I smelled the food in the bag. It smells awful, rancid. My vet assured me that it wasn't out of date. I'd like to know how other owners got their dogs to eat this! PS The price is outrageous though that would not stop me from buying it if he'd eat it.

Our dog won't eat it.

We tried to introduce it slowly to our dog in increasing portions over a several days to no avail. I'm sure it's a good product produced for its intended purpose, but Hills need to work on making it more palatable. My dog would eat just about anything, but not this. The pellets are quite oily to touch and have an unpleasant odour. If your dog has kidney disease it's worth a try. Maybe buy from somewhere where they offer a money back guarantee if your pet rejects it.

My dogs hate it

I tried giving this to my 15yr old staffy x but she hates it. Now my 17yr old Blue heeler has kidney issues and hates it as well. If I mix with the chicken breast & rice I cook for them they get through it leaving some in their bowls and it's only a small amount. The recommended feed dosage seems to high for 14kg dog. I am now also trying the expensive wet food combined with the dry which they ate last night. Will see how it goes.

So far, so good!

My almost 10 year old dachshund was diagnosed with kidney failure a month ago. His bun was 126 and creatinine was 4.6. I really thought that he was going to have to be put down or was going to die before I came home from work...he was in such rough shape. The vet kept him for 5 days administering iv fluids and he wouldn't eat. The vet recommended the k/d foods and he just can't get enough...mind you, he's a VERY picky eater. He absolutely loves the chicken k/d (and sometimes the stew variety) This food has returned him to his old self before and I'm in awe of how well he has responded to it. Thank you for giving me more time with him!

Dog won't eat this

My 15 year old dog who really needs this absolutely will not eat it. I don't blame him...it stinks/smells horrible and he's never been a picky eater. I've wasted a lot of money on this trying different ways to get him to eat it.

The Hills Prescription Diet k/d works!

My Boston Terrier, Noelle, was in very bad shape. She had lost weight, her coat was dull and faded and she was drinking lots of water. Our vet diagnosed her with kidney issues and prescribed the Hills Prescription Diet kidney care food. Within 2 months of eating the K/d dry and canned, she was 100% improved. Now, after 4 months on this food, her coat is dark and shiny, her eyes are bright again, and she is barking and playing. This has been an amazing transition without any additional supplements or medications. Thanks Hills, for making this product. Noelle should be a "poster child" for this diet!

My 14 year old Cocker Spaniel has been on this for 2 years for start of kidney failure. After his first month on it, his bloodwork was in the normal range again! Very important while on this you can no longer give them any people food. It completely defeats what this food does to help the kidneys.

If your dog is picky, they'll love this!!!

Just found out my 15 yr old Shih-Tzu is in the beginnings of kidney failure. Doc prescribed this and we were wary that our dog wouldn't eat it since it is not his normal kibble. BUT EUREKA HE LOVES IT and...so do our other 2 dogs! =D Mangia! mangia!! Nom! nom!! nom!!!

Dog won't eat new formula!!

Been feeding canned k/d. Once we opened a can of the new formula she stopped eating it. Up to then it had helped her kidney values stabilize. This was the only kidney diet she would eat. Now she will only eat her old food which won't help her kidney disease. Bring back the old formula!!!

A good help them live several more years. The quality, the ingredients, the flavors seemed great because he loved it.

Excellent results

It was heartbreaking to hear that my now 16 year old canine friend has kidney and liver disease. She had stopped eating after opening a new bag of her regular food. She was not relying well and not eating anything at all. Her weight dropped also. After one month eating K/D dry food she gained weight and her creative and bun levels dropped significantly. After two months of eating this food and those values are holding steady. She absolutely loves eating again and can't get enough at meal time. It is wonderful to see her appetite improve greatly!! The kibble is soaked in water for awhile before meal time, and that contributes to the water she needs daily. Thank you Hill's for K/D because it has played a large part in her still being by my side. The low phosphorus content plays a big role in helping keep her blood levels normal, along with a binder. Thank you again! It is a joy watching her love food once again.

Kidney K/D
VERIFIED PURCHASER

We have been using this product for about 2 years now, and it seems to be working in stabilizing our oldest dog's kidneys. However, the last two bags we bought had huge amount of oil in them, way more than normal. We returned them to our vet, who called Customer Service - they agreed the oil should not be present They asked the vet to open another bag on their shelves, but this also had the same amount of oil in it. The vet is currently working to try to resolve this issue.

Dog likes product, but she's a beagle so she likes all food! It also has improved her blood work. However, I do have a problem with your recent major price increase.

KD made my dogs kidneys healthy again!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My vet put my old dog Jack on KD when his kidney values were higher than normal. Within a year, they were back to normal levels. He likes the KD dry food and eats every bite. I am so grateful for this food for getting my Jack back to good health. I also feed my four cats Hill's KD and CD Feline for their kidney and bladder health.

unknown kidney problem

Our vet put our 6 yo boxer on k/d this past week due to frequent urination and lack of appetite after numerous tests/x-rays proved inconclusive to any issue. She gobbled it up and her appetite returned almost immediately. We mixed moist with dry and she is now improving.

My 15 yr old Chocolate Lab was having problems holding his bowels. After many test we found out his kidneys are not very good. Duke has been on both dry and wet K/D for over a year and has a much better quality of life and very few accidents in the house. At last check up his kidneys are not any better but they are not any worse. This food has made a huge difference.

He never skips a meal
VERIFIED PURCHASER

we adopted an 8 yr old dog Australian Cattle Dog from the rescue shelter. He came home with a lot of prostrate, urinary and kidney issues. Our vet got him stable and one of the keys was Hill's Kidney food. Getting him to eat was very important to increasing his health level. He has not skipped a meal since being on the k/d. We mix it with a little water and 1/4 can of wet food and it vanishes. He seems to be quite healthy and energetic. His play mate is a 1 yr old pitbull and he holds his own when they play.

My vet recommended this food and I bought a large bag without having any samples. My dog would not eat this, no matter how I tried to hide it. What a waste of money.
