A Dog's Guide to Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Canned Dog Food

If a domesticated dog could speak human, digestive care would be top of the list. A dog's digestive health can be negatively affected by a great many things that upset their stomach, disrupt their normal kidney function, and generally their bodily system.

It is a good thing that there are dog food brands that prioritize digestive health and kidney care. Hill's pioneering research and great nutritional formulas drastically transform a pet's life. The dog food brand Hill conducts 5 million quality and safety checks per year to ensure the highest standard of quality.

Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians developed the #1 vet-recommended Hill's Prescription Diet k/d (kidney diet) Canine to balance a dog's highest nutritional needs and to specifically care for the dog's kidneys. The Hill's Prescription k/d dog foods are therapeutic and guarantee a happy and active life again, your dog would ruff.

Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Canned Dog Food is a specialized and clinically formulated diet meticulously designed by Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians to address the unique nutritional needs of dogs suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). This therapeutic food is crafted with the aim of enhancing a dog's quality of life and managing the progression of this challenging condition.

  • ActivBiome+ Kidney Defense:This diet includes Hill's proprietary blend of prebiotics, known as ActivBiome+ Kidney Defense, which focuses on maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. A well-balanced gut can be crucial in protecting kidney function and reducing the potential damage to kidney tissues.

  • Reduced Phosphorus and Sodium Levels:To promote healthy kidneys, Hill's Prescription Diet k/d is formulated with reduced levels of phosphorus and sodium. This is crucial for dogs with CKD, as excessive amounts of these minerals can burden the kidneys and contribute to the progression of the disease.

  • Uremic Toxins Reduction:The therapeutic food is designed to reduce uremic toxins, helping slow down the progression of CKD. Essential amino acids and L-carnitine are included to support caloric intake, build muscle mass, and manage the workload on the kidneys.

  • Clinical Proven Nutrition:Hill's Prescription Diet k/d is backed by clinically proven nutrition aimed at improving and lengthening the quality of life for dogs with decreased kidney function.

  • S+OXSHIELD for Crystal Prevention:The inclusion of S+OXSHIELD helps reduce the risk of developing struvite and calcium oxalate crystals, common concerns in dogs with kidney issues.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids:The formula contains omega-3 fatty acids, which play a role in reducing harmful waste products in the bloodstream, optimizing levels of essential amino acids, and providing high-quality protein.

  • Texture and Flavor Variety:With multiple wet forms and flavors available, Hill's Prescription Diet k/d ensures variety in texture and flavor, making it easier to maintain consistent long-term feeding.

This complete and balanced food provides the essential nutrition your dog needs to lead a happy and active life, managing the invisible changes within the intestinal tract and supporting vital kidney function. The formula is made with chicken to provide a palatable and ground texture, ensuring an irresistible taste that even dogs with a decreased appetite find appealing. Hill's Prescription Diet k/d is a trusted choice for owners seeking therapeutic foods for kidney conditions in their beloved pets.

Why should your dog eat Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Canned Dog Food?

Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians manufactured Prescription Diet k/d to support their kidney function, for renal health, and help sustain muscle mass. The nutrition of k/d is clinically tested nutrition to improve and lengthen quality of life.

How does Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Canned Dog Food work?

A kidneys' role is to filter waste and toxins from the blood, such as phosphorus and sodium, and maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. As dogs are getting older, decreased kidney function (i.e., renal dogs) is more likely to occur. Dogs then experience a decreased appetite, caloric intake, and loss of muscle mass.

The product creates an unfavorable environment for excess materials, such as phosphorus and sodium, in the kidney to form bladder stones and crystals. The recipe controls their levels, protects essential kidney and heart function with L-Carnitine and omega-3 fatty acids, and supports building lean muscle with high amino acids.

The well-known pet food brand Hill's new Enhanced Appetite Trigger (E.A.T.) technology is specially tailored for renal dogs to improve their kidney care by stimulating their appetite and increasing their caloric intake.

Nutritional Value

The Hill's Prescription Diet k/d products list their specific ingredients. Below are the crude nutritional values in protein, fat, and fiber:

Crude Protein (2.5 %) is the measure of all sources of nitrogen and includes nonprotein nitrogen, which may have no human value. Crude protein is a chemical analysis of the protein (e.g., chicken, milk, etc.) and non-protein (e.g., grains) amounts in the food.

Crude Fat (4.5 %) is the term for fat-soluble materials such as lipid content in your dog's food when ingested.

Crude Fiber (2.5 %) is a measure of indigestible cellulose, pentosans, lignin, and other components of this type of chemical fibers. It has little food value but provides major intestinal tract peristalsis, a wave-like muscle contraction to relax the stomach muscles.

Is Chicken Ok for Dogs With Kidney Disease?
Answer

Experts say that bioavailable protein sources are the best solutions for your petโ€™s health. This means that the proteins should cause minimum stress on the body at the time of absorption and have a smooth absorption process. Lean meat sources like defatted beef, turkey, or chicken breast, when cooked fresh are best for your pets to absorb without any issues. They are rich in moisture content too which is a key need for pets with kidney issues.

How Does Kd Dog Food Work?
Answer

The main role of the kidneys is to filter toxins from the body or blood to be specific. Kidneys help maintain the sodium and phosphorus levels in the body. This in turn helps maintain the balance of the minerals and fluids in the body. Aging at times reduces the capability of the kidneys thereby leading to a decreased kidney function. It can lead to chances of muscle mass loss or a decreased appetite. Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Canned Dog Food creates a urinary environment that is unfavorable for stone formation. It helps keep a tab of the sodium and phosphorus levels in the body. The essential kidney and heart functions are facilitated by the use of omega 3 fatty acids and L-Carnitine. The muscle build-up and recovery of appetite are done by the higher levels of amino acids in the food. Hill's proprietary Enhanced Appetite Trigger (E.A.T.) Technology helps to specifically cater to the needs of dogs with kidney problems. It helps increase the calories intake and stimulate the appetite.

What Foods Help Repair Kidneys?
Answer

Pets with kidney trouble lack the ability to control the sodium and phosphorus levels in the body. They need foods that can help aid in this function. The foods need to be carefully picked. You can give them fresh apples, fish, blueberries, spinach, or sweet potatoes.

Is Sweet Potato Good for Dogs With Kidney Disease?
Answer

Sweet potato has one of the highest and best levels of fiber amongst the vegetables. They are loved by the pets. Sweet potatoes can be given to pets suffering from kidney diseases too. The fiber content of sweet potatoes helps in improving digestive health and bowel movement.

What's the best food for dogs with kidney problems?
Answer

Dogs with kidney problems often benefit from a specialized diet that helps manage the condition and supports kidney function. Reducing phosphorus intake is important as the kidneys may struggle to eliminate excess phosphorus. Look for dog foods labeled as "kidney diet" or "renal diet," as they are formulated to have reduced phosphorus levels. Although it may seem counterintuitive, a limited amount of high-quality protein is typically recommended for dogs with kidney problems. The protein source should be easily digestible and of good quality. Kidney-friendly diets usually have reduced sodium levels to help manage blood pressure. These can help support kidney health and reduce inflammation. Look for foods that contain fish oil or other sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Hill's is a well-known brand that offers a range of prescription diets for various health conditions, including kidney care. Their k/d Kidney Care line includes both canned and dry dog food options. Royal Canin is another reputable brand that produces veterinary diets. Their Renal Support line offers different formulations, such as wet, dry, and even treats, designed specifically for dogs with kidney issues. Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets offers the NF Kidney Function line, which is formulated to support dogs with kidney problems. They offer both canned and dry food options. Blue Buffalo offers a veterinary diet called KS Kidney Support, which is designed to provide balanced nutrition while supporting kidney health. Their KS Kidney Support comes in canned food form.

What can I feed my dog to prevent kidney disease?
Answer

Preventing kidney disease in dogs involves maintaining a healthy lifestyle and providing a balanced diet. Ensure that your dog has access to clean and fresh water at all times. Proper hydration is essential for kidney function. Feed your dog a high-quality, balanced diet that meets its nutritional needs. Look for dog foods that are labeled as complete and balanced and formulated by reputable brands. The diet should contain appropriate levels of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Consult with your veterinarian for specific dietary recommendations based on your dog's breed, age, size, and overall health. Avoid feeding your dog excessive table scraps, fatty foods, or foods that are toxic to dogs (such as chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins). These can strain the kidneys and may lead to health issues over time. Obesity can contribute to various health problems, including kidney disease. Keep your dog at a healthy weight through portion control and regular exercise. Consult with your veterinarian to determine your dog's ideal weight and appropriate feeding amounts. Schedule routine check-ups with your veterinarian. They can monitor your dog's overall health, perform blood and urine tests to assess kidney function, and provide guidance specific to your dog's needs.

Is rice OK for dogs with kidney disease?
Answer

Dogs with kidney disease often require a controlled amount of high-quality protein in their diet. In some cases, a low-protein diet may be recommended to reduce the workload on the kidneys. Rice is a carbohydrate source and does not provide a significant amount of protein. If a low-protein diet is recommended for your dog, other protein sources may need to be limited or carefully selected. Phosphorus is another nutrient that needs to be managed in dogs with kidney disease. High levels of phosphorus can strain the kidneys. Rice generally has a lower phosphorus content compared to some other grains, but the overall phosphorus balance in the diet should be taken into account. Dogs with kidney disease may have varying sensitivities or tolerances to certain foods. While rice is generally considered a relatively easily digestible carbohydrate, some dogs may have specific dietary restrictions or sensitivities. Your veterinarian will consider these factors when providing guidance.

What is the best fruit for dogs with kidney disease?
Answer

Fruits should generally be fed in moderation due to their natural sugar content. There are some fruits that can be suitable for dogs with kidney disease, provided they are given in controlled amounts and in consultation with your veterinarian. Apples are a good source of fiber and can provide some vitamins and minerals. Be sure to remove the seeds and core before offering them to your dog. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and low in phosphorus, making them a potentially beneficial fruit for dogs with kidney disease. They can be given as an occasional treat. Watermelon has high water content and can help promote hydration. It is low in phosphorus and can be a refreshing treat for dogs, but it should still be fed in moderation due to its natural sugar content. Cranberries are often recommended for urinary tract health in dogs, and they can also be beneficial for dogs with kidney disease. However, it's important to feed cranberries in limited quantities as part of a balanced diet.

What protein is good for kidney disease?
Answer

Lean meats, such as skinless chicken or turkey, are often recommended as they provide high-quality protein with lower fat content. These meats are typically easier for dogs to digest compared to fattier cuts. Fish, such as salmon or whitefish, can be a good protein source for dogs with kidney disease. They are generally low in phosphorus and provide omega-3 fatty acids, which can have anti-inflammatory properties. Eggs are a complete protein source and can be included in the diet of dogs with kidney disease. They are also a good alternative for dogs that may have sensitivities or allergies to other protein sources. Some dogs with kidney disease may tolerate small amounts of low-fat dairy products, such as plain yogurt or cottage cheese. However, you have to be mindful of phosphorus levels in dairy products, so it's best to consult your veterinarian before including them in the diet.

This food has made all the difference for my Husky

My Husky was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2018. Her creatinine was elevated, and she had to go on prescription kidney food, immediately. I chose Hill's for her, just hoping I could get her to eat it. Boy was I surprised to see how much she loves this food! She cleans her bowl, every time, and keeps licking the bowl to make sure she gets every drop! After 6 months on the food, her creatinine was back in the normal range, and has stayed there! She has no symptoms of kidney disease now, and I only have to have her checked at her annual exam, now! She is happy, healthy, and at 9 years, is still as playful as a puppy! I would add that this food is tasty, based on the fact my Husky's very finicky brother, my Golden Retriever, also likes it! Sometimes he will come ask for a bite, when I am feeding her, and on occasion, I have to get him his own bowl of it!

Dixie Loves It!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My 8 1/2 yr Lab/Pittie loves this food. I mix a bit of the wet food with her dry, as the kibbles are very small and she has trouble eating it and keeping it in her mouth. The only issue I really have is that she has gained weight on this food. I am not overfeeding her but she is "food-motivated" and will eat just about anything, so an appetite enhancer added to the food seems to make her hungry all the time. This food honestly, well.....doesn't smell so great to me, but again, she loves it.

Best Tasting and Effective Kidney Diet

My 14 year old Chihuahuas kidneys were failing , she had to go out 2-3 times a night and vet suggested we try Hills K/D diet as a last resort as there was no "cure" BUT in less than 24 hours on this food our pups felt 100% better and peeing was refuced by 85%!!!! Thanks to Hills science diet!

The produce is good but has now been discontinued

The quality was good and was a favourite of my dog. But without notice it has been discontinued. However as usual marketing is still catching up. They previously had a lamb version for renal that up until a month ago was displayed as a current product even though it had not been available in Australia for 2 years

Amazing

My 15 year old yorkie Diagnosed with kidney Failure earlier in the year, tried the pate formula with no luck at all, After several weeks of trying home made meals and worried about vitamin content, i came across the KD beef stew formula and was amazed at how he wolfed this down, his extreme water consumption has decreased to less than 1/2 ,we've only been on this for about 2 weeks but I have already noticed slight change In His energy level I am hopeful, I DK about the original formula but this is working awesome for us so far

Mu 15 year old Bichon hates it

My 15 year old Bichon was diagnosed with kidney disease and she was prescribed this food. She hates it. Like an other reviewer stated, she ran away from it. It may be nutritionally of good quality, but it breaks my heart we have to force feed her with food she hates. I hope they willd o something about the flavour. I still would recommend this food however if it has good results on the outcome of blood results.

"Improved Formula" is NOT better than original formula.

My Westie loves the original chicken flavor canned food. After purchasing another case, he was able to consume only 2 cans before he decided he didn't like it anymore. I discovered each can is identified as "IMPROVED FORMULA" printed on the red band around the top of the can label. Well, my dog definitely doesn't like the formula change. So, I returned the remaining cans for credit. My vet only had 4 cans left of the original chicken formula. I was told no more is available. I strongly suggest Hills reintroduce the original chicken formula for sale. I will be searching out different brands of K/D dog food that my dog likes.

AMAZING- Saved my baby girl

This product has been a MIRACLE for my 14 year old Shihtzu. She has been super healthy her whole life up until this point :( She was drinking lots of water and peeing non stop in the house.. I knew those were signs of kidney disease. Long story short, after about 2-3 days of being STRICTLY on this k/d diet she was doing amazing. People often don't understand that if you are giving your pet this food- and scraps or treats they shouldn't have this does not work. Zoey used to wake me up at least 3 times a night to go outside and get water. She has been on this diet about 5 months now and she hasn't woken me up once to go outside. She also loves when its feeding time! I would highly, highly recommend this to any dog/cat that is suffering from kidney disease. (Obviously use the feline food for cats). Also, with Zoey being older she does not keep weight on like I would like her too.. so i feed her 3 times a day but i put just one teaspoon of the wet on top of the dry k/d food and she eats them both. The k/d wet food has more water in it so she will not gain weight and has to eat more of that to do so. So i would recommend mixing them! :)

My dog runs away from this stuff!

This stuff looks good enough that I would eat it myself! But as soon as my dog smells it, she turns away. If I put a little in her mouth, she'll spit it out...sad.

I would not recommend this food

It appears that Hills has decided to change the once loved recipe of this food. I can agree with several others on here that my dog will not TOUCH THIS FOOD. The moment she smells the food she steps away and turns her nose up at it. The consistency is one of the worst that I have seen, it sticks to everything it touches. This is going back to PetSmart

New formula is terrible

When the formula changed my dog stopped eating it. I have tried everything. It's so disappointing because my dog has ate the same food for almost 10 years. Please bring back the old formula.

She is finally eating!!

My little doggie is a very finicky eater. One day she will eat something, the next day turn her nose at it. This is the only food I have ever seen her wolf down. So for our little dog, this is a WIN!!

Bring Back the Old Formula!!!

My little maltese LOVED the old formula, and would "dive into it", as one reviewer stated. Now, he picks and just messes around with it. I have to put his medicine in his food for him to take it, and now it's a chore to make sure he gets his medicine down with his food, because he doesn't seem to like it. Also, because there is so much liquid in the new stew formula, I don't get as much mileage out of a can as I used to get. It's costing me twice as much, when before was already pricey enough. PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD FORMULA! Keep them both on the shelves, that way everyone has a choice!

My dogs won't eat this.

Two of our dogs have kidney issues, and we were told to feed them the k/d food. We have tried both the chicken and the lamb recipes, with minimal success. We have purchased the canned food to mix in, but the dogs sniff and walk away. They will try to eat anything else, so we know it's not their appetites. The vet said to doctor it up a little, but not too much as to minimalize the benefit of the food. As my vet said, a prescription food is only good if you are able to get your pet to eat it. It is literally a chore to get them to eat this. I've read the previous reviews regarding the old recipe, but had not been able to try that. Reading them and the success others appear to have had with it, I wish the old recipe would come back. We will be trying Royal Canin to see if we have more success with it. My other dog is on Royal Canin ultamino, and loves it, so hopefully these two will like the kidney formula.

My dogs love the KD stew

Cost can be prohibitive at $3 a day and my 15 pound dog is to eat a can a day times 2 because i have 2 dogs on it. But my dogs love the stew and one was not eating at all and that dog loves this and i am so happy she is eating.
