Amoxi-Tabs (amoxicillin) is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic designed for both canine and feline use. It is a semi-synthetic drug used to treat a wide range of infections caused by gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens.
It is a wide spectrum, penicillin based antibiotic, which is commonly used to treat a variety of bacterial infections like respiratory infections, skin and soft tissue diseases, urinary tract and gastro intestinal infections, among others in dogs and cats. It can be used only in suspected bacterial infections as it is not effective for viral and parasitic infections.
Amoxi-tabs are highly stable in the presence of gastric acid and hence could be even administered along with food. They are available in various strengths from 50mg- 400mg. The recommended dose for dogs ranges from 5 to 12 mg per pound (10 to 25 mg/kg), two or three times a day. The duration depends on the severity of the infection and the response of the animal.
While Amoxi-tabs are relatively safe when administered under a veterinarian, it might trigger a few side effects in some animals. It is normal for some animals to develop diarrhea during the treatment with Amoxi-tabs, which happens because of the sudden change in the bacterial presence of the pet's intestinal tract. However, if diarrhea persists it might be a symptom of colitis or intestinal infections, which should be brought to the attention of the veterinarian. Loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting are some other common side effects.
