Is Royal Canin good for cats with kidney disease?
Answer

Royal Canin offers a specialized veterinary diet called "Renal Support," which is formulated to support cats with kidney disease. This particular line of cat food aims to manage the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). It does so by providing a restricted amount of high-quality protein, reduced phosphorus levels, and other nutrients to support renal function. According to Self, Royal Canin formulates each recipe with the pet's age, size, and breed in mind while testing at their research centers. The formulation is designed to alleviate the workload on the kidneys and help manage the symptoms associated with kidney disease. Royal Canin's Renal Support can be a beneficial part of a comprehensive treatment plan for cats with kidney disease when used under veterinary guidance.

Why is Royal Canin so expensive?
Answer

Royal Canin is often perceived as more expensive compared to some other pet food brands for several reasons. Ava Medina, a veterinarian assistant with 20 years of experience notes that Royal Canin emphasizes extensive research and development in formulating their diets. They invest in veterinary nutritionists and conduct studies to create specialized recipes designed to address specific health concerns in pets. This commitment to precision and quality ingredients contributes to higher production costs. Secondly, the use of premium ingredients adds to the expense. Royal Canin often includes high-quality proteins, grains, and other nutrients, sourced to meet strict quality standards. The company aims to provide balanced and complete nutrition tailored to the unique needs of different breeds, sizes, and health conditions. Additionally, VeryInformed notes that the manufacturing processes employed by Royal Canin are designed to ensure consistency and quality in each batch. These processes, along with the rigorous testing that the products undergo, further contribute to production costs. The packaging and presentation of the product also play a role in its pricing. While Royal Canin may have a higher price point, many pet owners consider the investment worthwhile. This is due to the brand's reputation for producing effective veterinary diets that contribute to the overall health and well-being of their pets.

What is the best food for a cat with kidney disease?
Answer

The best food for a cat with kidney disease is typically a therapeutic renal diet prescribed by a veterinarian. Brands like Hill's Prescription Diet k/d and Royal Canin Renal Support are commonly recommended. These specialized diets are formulated to support kidney function and manage the progression of renal disease. Lisa M. Freeman, a DVM from Tufts University, notes that these diets have controlled protein content, and added omega-3 fatty acids. Wet or canned formulations are often preferred for their higher moisture content, helping to maintain hydration, which is crucial for cats with kidney issues. It's worth noting that the choice of food may vary depending on the cat's specific needs, stage of kidney disease, and existing health issues. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential to monitor the cat's condition and adjust the diet accordingly. Additionally, cats with kidney disease may have individual preferences, so finding a palatable option is crucial to ensure they maintain a healthy appetite.

Can cats live with bad kidneys?
Answer

Cats with bad kidneys can live, but managing their condition becomes crucial for their well-being. NIH notes that chronic kidney disease is a common ailment in older cats, and while it is not curable, its progression can be slowed. Adequate hydration is essential to support kidney function, so providing access to fresh water and switching to wet food can help maintain hydration levels. Prescription diets formulated for kidney support are available and can aid in managing the disease. Regular veterinary check-ups are imperative for monitoring the cat's condition, adjusting treatment plans, and addressing any complications that may arise. Medications may be prescribed to control symptoms and slow the progression of CKD. Additionally, maintaining a stress-free environment is beneficial for cats with kidney issues. While CKD requires ongoing attention, many cats can lead relatively normal lives with proper management. This allows them to enjoy their daily activities and companionship with their owners. Early detection and proactive care are crucial for optimizing the quality and longevity of life for cats with bad kidneys.

What is stage 3 CKD in cats?
Answer

Stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats represents an intermediate level of kidney dysfunction, characterized by a moderate decline in renal function. CKD is a common and progressive condition in aging cats, and it occurs when the kidneys are no longer able to efficiently filter waste. In Stage 3 CKD, the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is reduced, indicating a decrease in the kidneys' ability to filter and excrete waste products. Common clinical signs may include increased thirst and urination, weight loss, decreased appetite, and changes in coat quality. Veterinary diagnosis typically involves blood tests, urinalysis, and sometimes imaging studies to assess the severity and progression of the disease. Management of Stage 3 CKD in cats often involves a multifaceted approach. Dietary modifications, such as a prescription kidney diet with controlled levels of phosphorus and other nutrients, may be recommended. Monitoring and managing associated symptoms, such as hypertension and anemia, are also essential. Regular veterinary check-ups and bloodwork are crucial to monitor the progression of the disease and adjust the treatment plan accordingly. While CKD is generally irreversible, early detection and appropriate management can help slow its progression and improve the quality of life for affected cats.

Iโ€™ve tried so many brands and different flavors/formulas and our girl would eat them for a short period and then stop and just refuse to eat. When we tried the E loaf, she loved it and has been loving it for almost a year and her kidney function has is maintaining, Iโ€™m a huge fan!

A necessity

Two of my elder cats have CKD. The vet suggested a RX renal diet. Looking at the ingredients, compared to their former food; premium ZIWI wet chicken, seems so inferior. Whatโ€™s one to do? The cats like it, but Iโ€™m concerned about the junk in this RX Royal Canin.

Slim LOVED this and his health improved so much!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My darling boy Slim age 16 started on this food a couple of months ago. This Royal Canine Renal E loaf in sauce was all he was eating. He LOVED this food and demanded it several times a day. I was so happy to see his appetite increase, and I saw a huge improvement in his health! His coat was shinier, and he was playful and happy. I was so excited to see him doing so well, and I was devastated when he was killed by a coyote a week ago.
