Novox, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is indicated for the treatment of arthritis in dogs. The medication provides effective relief from pain and inflammation caused by canine arthritis, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery. The active ingredient in the medication, carporfen, comes with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
Do not administer the medication to cats. In addition, the drug is not suitable for animals with bleeding problems like stomach ulcers and Von Willebrand’s disease. Avoid using the medicine in dogs with hypersensitivity, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), kidney, heart or liver disease or those that are dehydrated. The medication is not advised for dogs that are dehydrated. Use with extreme caution when used with other NSAIDs like aspirin and etodolac, or corticosteroids like prednisone. Make sure to inform the pharmacist or veterinarian about the medication the pet is taking. Examine the dog before beginning the treatment. Also, monitor the kidney and liver function during the treatment.
Novox, a prescription medication, is available in 25mg, 75mg and 100mg scored caplets. The recommended oral dosage for dogs is 1 mg/lbs (2.2 mg/kg) twice daily or 2 mg/lbs (4.4 mg/kg) once daily. The standard injectable dose for initial surgical pain is 1.8 mg/lbs (4 mg/kg) intravenously then 1 mg/lbs (2.2 mg/kg) orally, intravenously, subcutaneously or intramuscularly twice a day, if required. The duration of the therapy is based on the clinical condition of the pet.
Most commonly observed side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, drowsiness, tarry or dark stools, behavioral changes, stomach upset, ulcers and loss of appetite. In rare instances, side effects like seizure and blood cell suppression are observed. The serious side effects associated with novox include liver injury, urinary tract problems and stomach ulcers. There are possibilities of allergic reactions as well, such as hives, rash and facial swelling.
