Excellent product (y/d wet and dry)
We've been feeding our cat both the y/d wet food (main meals), and the y/d dry food (as a snack/treats) for a year. This is maintaining her thyroid level within normal range. She has low white blood cell (neutrophil) counts, and we are very thankful for the y/d wet food option instead of making her take medicine (which can impact white blood cell count). She likes the taste, and is eating well. Hoping that the issues with sourcing are resolved and it will be easier to find the y/d wet food. Thank you Hills for creating such a wonderful product. by on 08/15/2023
Review on wet food, dry ok
This review of 1 star is on wet only. First of all who is doing research on this, if anyone The iodine content is 0.1ppm,. I am currently looking to add some flavor, even if a drop to your wet formula. Who are the test subjects for the wet food.?There has to be some way to make it more palatable. So sad cats have to go thru thyroid disease, but to have undesirable taste is not acceptable for anyone, let alone our furry friends. Please research harder! Thanks. Will be looking for better results or other products that can sufficiently help our pets. by on 06/07/2023
Handy when available
When will this food be avalable again? Customer service gets 0 points from this customer, seems like this company doesn't even read these feedbacks. Is this product being even made anymore? by on 06/03/2023
Basically out of stock for almost 2 years!
My elderly cat depends on this food. However it is always out of stock. When you calls Hill's for an update, the scripted response of "obtaining quality ingredients is their priority" is not helpful. by on 04/20/2023
Please make more!
Is this food ever going into production again?! It is a lifesaver and hasn't been available for months. It was such welcome variety when used in conjunction with the dry kibble. (I've given a rating because it was required for posting. The product is very good, but the availability deletes stars.) by on 04/14/2023
WHAT'S GOING ON???
How do I use the product? I DON'T BECAUSE I CAN'T GET ANY! What is great about the product? I DON'T KNOW BECAUSE I CAN'T GET ANY! What is not great about the product? IT'S NOWWHERE TO BE FOUND! All I can find on here about Y/D is your generalized BS answers to customers who are reaching out to you for help, and all you do is blow smoke at us. How about some SPECIFIC answers like: When will it be available again (your best guess), what specific ingredient are you having trouble sourcing and why are you having trouble getting it, is anybody there actually proactively working this problem? C'mon! Get your big guns involved and solve this problem once and for all! by on 03/11/2023
Great for 2+ years - but when is it available???
Our 17 yo cat has been on this diet for a little over 2 years and has avoided medication and been in good health. Like other users, we heat the plate of food a bit over boiling water and then add a bit of hot water to the food and she seems to like it better. This has literally been a life-saver, but like many reviewers noted, there has been a prolonged and frustrating lack of product due to whatever reason. There's no shortage of chicken in my grocery. I wonder if resources are being diverted to higher margin products. (???) In any event, I look forward to restocking - sometime in my lifetime. by on 02/22/2023
Out of Stock For a Year!
Although y/d wet canned food seems to be the only solution to my 17 yr old cat's hyperthyroidism, Hill's has been out of stock for almost a year now. I've called 3-4 times now and they have never been able to explain the reality behind the shortage. They have these miraculously short window deliveries to Chewy and Petco, to which I never seem quick enough to purchase, but yet they won't allow me to purchase direct with them. by on 02/13/2023
This food keeps my cat alate
Have been checking and checking looking for when a vet somewhere near me can get their hands on some of the wet food. Stock has been out for months. Just had our cat's blood checked and she is holding her own currently, but the vet is suggesting she may need to go back to medication. I think the only reason she is still alive after being diagnosed seven years ago was because of your product. The improved flavour to the canned food did help in getting her to eat it & I would agree that smaller cans might be better but we have discovered adding a little boiled water to her serving of food and 'heating' the cold leftovers in the can does help to get her to eat her way through most of the can. Would be wonderful to get an ETA as to when supplies will reach Canada or even the northern States. by on 01/19/2023
My cat health has been improving
The oral medication was a challenge to administer, so we switched to this food, and my cat symptoms have been improving after 2.5 weeks. The problem is that we are running low of the product that the vet gave us, when will the wet and dry food be back in stock? Is the product discontinued? by on 12/09/2022
Diet works for hyperthyroidism, but NEED SMALLER CANS!
Product works great for controlling hyperthyroidism in my cat. The cans are way too large. My cat eats the first 1/4 can on day one, eats ~1/2 of the next 1/4 can serving and then will not touch the remaining 1/2 can. Super wasteful to be throwing more than 50% of this away. Really need to make it in smaller cans! by on 11/18/2022
Hills does not listen nor respond to their customers
The product., when available, does in many cases, help control hypothyroidism in cats. Great! Except, it is currently not available and rather than give real updates with plans for either returning or removing the product from the market, Hills remains stoic, blaming materials ( ingredients) availability for the problem(s). That may be partly true, why not be "transparent" and admit manufacturing challenges with a corrective action timeline ..we all want what is best for our cats and Hills provided help..now they won't even admit and discuss the problem and potential solution.. unfortunately, there are no alternatives to the wet food and we all now need to trust the dry which apparently has its own drawbacks. Why not be open with us?. We have cat lives depending on you and burying your head in the sand only makes the struggle worse. by on 11/06/2022
Where can I get this food?!
This is the only food my cat can eat. I can't find it anywhere!!!! What is the problem and when will it be available?! This is VERY stressful! Food has been great for my cats thyroid condition. It's my only option as meds almost killed her! by on 11/04/2022
Best thyroid cat food
My cat will only eat this food. by on 06/01/2022
Hill's takes advantage of pet owners
My cat cannot take the medication as it skyrockets his liver enzymes. My ONLY choice is this food to keep him alive. Review after review asks for smaller cans because cats won't eat it after the first or second serving. Yet Hill's still won't listen. I guess money is more important than truly helping people and their animals. by on 05/05/2022
Need more flavours! And smaller cans.
This has helped my cat with hyperthyroidism immensely! He started putting weight back on and had more energy... until he got tired of a month of the same thing every day. Then he got depressed and would just flop and stare at the food in his dish, refusing to eat it. Hyperthyroidism isn't healthy but neither is a hunger strike! And I don't blame him when it's the same thing every single day. He is also more inclined to eat from a brand new, fresh can, so I definitely also echo the requests for smaller cans. by on 05/01/2022
Smaller cans needed!
Please offer smaller cans! by on 10/08/2021
Another request for smaller cans
I have the same issue as numerous reviews that I have read on your site regarding the need for smaller cans. This request has been mentioned many times and for many years. I cannot see any response from your customer services as to why this has not been implemented or if it is not possible, why not? Do you actually read your reviews for this product? Unfortunately it is the only product available for cat owners that have pets with thyroid problems where medication is not an option. Being one of the premier pet food producers I would have thought you would have put the feedback from your customers and those that are trying to do the best for their pets into some sort of action by now. A response would be welcome by on 06/30/2021
Smaller Can Option Please
The feedback for years now is the same as mine: I need smaller can option since my cat only likes the first serving from a freshly opened can. by on 05/12/2021
Flavors??
Fish flavors please?? Why is there only chicken flavor?? My cat hates chicken and is allergic to the medication. Leaves me with no options :( by on 05/10/2021
One ridiculous over sized large can to purchase for a CAT!!!
Smells horrible, my cat will only eat the first opening, after being refrigerated, the smell gets worse, I'm sure the taste of it is definitely worse !!!! by on 04/11/2021
Why didn't you listen?
My cat has been on this food for 6 weeks, reluctantly. He eats very little at a time and it turns to concrete in no time. EVERYBODY IS TELLING YOU TO USE SMALLER CANS AND CHANGE YOUR FLAVORS. DID YOU HEAR THEM??? You supposedly have a good product but you refuse to step it up so cats will eat it. WHAT GOOD IS A FOOD THAT CATS REFUSE TO EAT? I just don't get it. At least make a flavor additive that simulates different tastes that can be added during feedings. Listen to your customers! They are the very people that keep you in business! by on 02/07/2021
Please adjust consistency and can size.
This is the only option of canned for cats with thyroid issues, and it has helped her levels. But, she hates this food. It's a terrible consistency, too hard and dry. I have to add water. And, she really will only tolerate it from a freshly opened can. There is TOO much waste for this expensive product. A smaller can would help at least. It would cost the company more, but it would serve the kitties and owners better. I feel liked we are forced to use this food. If the medicine didn't upset her stomach, I would do that instead. by on 01/20/2021
Thickest Pate I've ever seen
I've seen many reviews from years back asking for smaller cans. I am repeating that request because this food is too expensive to throw away a half a can everyday. So far I'm on day three of trying to get my cat to eat this food . It went well for two days but now he just walks away. I had hoped to get him off his medication if this food worked but I'm not very confident that my boy will adapt. To summarize, we need smaller cans, more flavors, and some moisture in the can. Otherwise, he'll be on medication for the rest of his life unless I can find a different manufacturer of a similar product. by on 10/28/2020
Necessary evil, NEEDS TO COME IN SMALLER CANS!
We have to buy this for our cat for her thyroid issues, don't really have a choice I guess it's what the vet says we need to give her (and ONLY this). My biggest issue is that it's clearly not our cat's favorite food, and while she doesn't mind it so much when it's time to open a brand-new can, the remainder of the can she barely tolerates. We generally give her only 1/4 or 1/3 of a can at a time, so if they could make cans about one fourth to one third the size of their current cans that would be awesome. by on 10/12/2020
Ra is not too crazy about this food.
I give this to my cat every day because of his hyperthyroidism and he was allergic to the medication we tried. He is around 16 or 17 so we were afraid to give him the radioactive treatment but now are considering it. The food works but he never gets even to seven pounds. At his peak he weighed about 9 pounds. He is a Bombay cat and is naturally small but he is so frail. His blood numbers, thyroid numbers look ok after eating the food but he hates it. The most recent batch is one that he just refuses to touch. We have a case on order hoping it is better tasting to him. In the interim, I am boiling him chicken, pork or beef just to get him to eat something. And we need smaller cans of it. If I give him half a can, which is about the most I can get him to eat, he refuses to eat the rest after it has been refrigerated. I have tried warming it, etc. after refrigeration and he just does not want to eat it. Surely Hills could develop some other flavors that are still good for treating his thyroid condition. by on 08/30/2020
Updated review
My cat wouldn't touch this stuff at first. Wanted nothing to do with it. After speaking to someone at Hills that was very nice and had some good info, they suggested adding a little water and heating it a bit in the microwave to bring out the aroma. I didn't think it would work because my cat is so finicky, but it WORKED! My cat went right over and cleaned the bowl! She may not eat it all right way now, but the majority of the time she will go back and eat the rest later. So, if your cat won't eat it, try that. It worked for my sweet little girl kitty. by on 12/20/2019
Works Great but Cat Doesn't Like It
In terms of controlling my elderly cat's hyperthyroidism, this product is fantastic. However, as others have written, the cans need to be smaller so the food is fresher when served and more flavors are needed. Our elderly cat picks at the food and eats just enough to keep from starving (or so it seems). Then she cries because she is still hungry. by on 08/07/2019
Eliminated need for medication, but need smaller can size.
I am amazed with the results - this food did eliminate the need for medication, and I am grateful for that, even though Princess can't have any other treats anymore. That said, I really wish the Y/D wet food came in smaller cans - My elderly cat mostly eats the kibbles, which luckily she likes, but she does like her "kitty dinner" (wet food) every evening. Even so, she doesn't really eat much of it, she just likes the routine, so I only give her a tiny bit at a time, and as a result the cans get old in the refrigerator until she will no longer eat what I dish out, and I end up tossing about half of it every time. It's such a waste. I saw a couple other commenters request smaller cans as well. Thanks for your time. by on 12/04/2018
Need this in smaller cans.
My cat will eat the food, but the large size cans lead to waste. Smaller cans would be greatly appreciated. by on 08/27/2018
Need Smaller Cans, more flavors with gravy
My Cat will eat the dry. The wet food is a problem, first the cans are too large.. Please make smaller cans. Second the texture is rather stiff and hard, Can you please make a softer type with some gravy. Please make different flavors. How would you like to eat the same food for the rest of your life. by on 08/04/2018
Had high hopes
I just began feeding y/d dry food and so far so good. Unfortunately my little one would starve to death before she ate anything pate. Would love to see this food made available in a minced/morsels/shredded/anything but pate variety. Still gave three stars as it does seem like it helps the cats who are willing to eat it. by on 07/19/2018
Need smaller cans.
My cat refuses to eat it after the first serving out of the can. I can't blame her, it starts to smell fishy. The food does work but customers really need smaller cans. by on 06/13/2018
Why don't you make at least one different flavor.
My kitty will not eat the "Original" flavor. I tasted it, and I guess it tastes like cardboard smells. by on 06/06/2018
Smaller cans a must
Hill's Thyroid care y/d has done wonders for our 15 yr old male with hyperthyroidism. It has eliminated the need for meds. BUT would like smaller cans so he gets fresher food. A variety of flavours would help too. by on 05/31/2018
Keeps her Thyroid level healthy!
Is keeping my 16 year old Pippi happy and healthy- without pulling her! Only wish they came in the small cans!! And perhaps a different flavor! by on 05/04/2018
Too Large and Too Dry
Need smaller cans. My cat will not eat an entire can and only eats a small amount when it is fresh and juicy. This can is too large of a serving size and when it is saved, it gets hard and dry. Also, this only comes in one flavor which isn't well received by my cat. A fish flavor would be appreciated. by on 04/14/2018
Smaller Cans Please!
My cat needs this food because she can't take the medication. The problem is, she'll only eat the food when it's fresh, therefore I'm throwing away about 3/4 of a can of food. Please provide smaller cans! by on 04/10/2018
Need small cans and more flavors
Please help! My cat doesn't like leftovers. She won't eat cold hard food that changes colors when it dries out. Please make smaller single serving cans, Also, she's sick of eating chicken every day. Please offer different flavors. by on 04/02/2018
variety of flavors and size of cans
I note that many, many of your customers are saying the same thing. flavor of the food and size of the can. when would you start to pay attention to what your customers are saying ? cats are finicky eaters and if the flavor and aroma doesn't entice them to eat, what value is the food to control a health problem ? if they won't eat it, they won't get the value of it. by on 03/08/2018
Cat hates this product.
My cat hates this food. I have to cover it in water from a can of tuna fish to get her to eat it. As soon as there is a competing product, I'll buy it as it appears that these sorts of complaints are common and this company has not done anything to address them. by on 03/05/2018
Please consider smaller cans of y/d.
Good product. by on 03/02/2018
Big NOPE from my cat
My almost 17 year old cat will NOT eat this food. It's been a few months. Unless we mix it in with other canned cat food, she won't touch it. Wish there were more flavors. by on 02/17/2018
Different Flavor, Smaller Can & Jury Still Out
My cat was just totally weened onto the food. She is not a chicken fan but would love a flavor of Ocean Whitefish. It takes approximately 2-3 days for her to eat 1 large can and it dries out quickly so I have to mix it with water to keep it moist. It's sad to see people have requested these things and it seems to be ignored. Please LISTEN to your CUSTOMERS. This is too expensive to have to throw away when the issues can be easily solved. It would be easier to recommend to a friend if these things would happen. by on 02/07/2018
Last order of can YD, the food is dry and like sand.
Last order of canned YD-every can is dry like sand and my kitty can't even eat it and she has lost so much weight. She has always liked the YD and was doing great until this last order. Product #:52742 14960. Disgusting! by on 02/02/2018
Smaller cans, please.
Unfortunately, it's necessary to feed this food to my elderly kitty, but like others, find it most frustrating that smaller sized cans are not available. She eats both the Thyroid Care Dry and Canned but refuses to eat the canned after the first serving which is extremely wasteful. If I try to hold out and give her the second serving, she gets hungry even though she does have the dry to eat whenever she wants it. I am NOT happy with the situation and wish Hill's would make a smaller size available. I would feel so much better about using this product. by on 01/01/2018
smaller cans
Apparently the company has no interest in addressing the size issue. Too bad. by on 11/23/2017
Smaller cans.
My cat likes both the dry and canned but doesn't like the canned after it's been opened. Please make in smaller cans. ThAnk you. by on 10/31/2017
Only use since vet prescribed it
As far as 3 years ago, customers asked for smaller cans since many cats wont eat opened cans. In addition flavor was raised. I adm really disappointed tha you have not yet addressed these concerns. - Our cat eats 1/3 can and the rest goes to the compost, very expensive. by on 09/28/2017
Thyroid food
The vet suggested I try the thyroid food both wet and dry for his problem a number of years ago and so far it is proving to be very helpful. Gus would not touch the wet food until I smeared some on his front leg and he had to lick it off and from then on he has eaten it. After opening a can I feed him the 2 ounces he gets every day and make 2 ounce balls and freeze them to be eaten the following days and that seems to be working just fine. by on 08/06/2017
Y/D canned
Just started on the new food and was reading the reviews for suggestions on making it more appealing. The can sizes are way to big and Hills - I noted so many people have asked for smaller cans due to various reasons with responses from you that it was a "good suggestion and you'll let the team know" however those responses go back 3-4 years and they still haven't made smaller cans??? How long does it take to make smaller cans for all the people that are having to buy the food for their pet?? And why can't there be more than one flavor?? by on 08/03/2017
What meat does it contain. There is no indication
The contents are not stated on the can. I need to know what they are, especially what meat type. by on 06/19/2017
Suggestions
Definitely need smaller cans. I see some reviewers here suggested this 3 years ago, yet you haven't done it. Treats would be great also. My cat is used to good food and treats. Now she is not fond of her food and I can't even give her treats. I also have to keep her locked up in a back bedroom so she won't eat the other cats' food. So now I feel she's being punished. She seems depressed now. Please help us all. Thanks. by on 04/23/2017
Missy wants turkey!
My vet recommended this diet to restore my cat's thyroid level to normal and stop her constant diarrhea. Well, so far I love the results but Missy is getting board with the chicken flavor. Is your company working on new flavors and if you are when do you think they will be ready for market? Also, it would be great if you could make the food available in different quantities. Since Missy is small a 3-4 oz can would be best for her. Then she could have a fresh can for each meal as she hates it served cold. Thank you for your time and consideration. by on 03/31/2017
No good
My cat won't eat the canned food at all. She can't eat the dry food due to having bad teeth and she is willing to starve then eat the wet food. I can't give her medication so I'm left with no option but to do nothing and watch her get worse with her thyroids. Very disappointed with this product. by on 02/28/2017
My Review
This food has really helped my cat. In the beginning I had to force feed her because she refused to eat it. I finally gave up and just put it out for her. When she got hungry she started eating it. I just wish you offered it in the small can and bag. She eats less than a fourth of the can at a time n doesn't want the rest after it's been in fridge. Same with dry food. Please, we need the smaller cans and smaller bag. by on 02/22/2017
Please provide small cans of this food!!!
It's great medicine but there is an incredible amount of waste for those of us who buy it and feed small portions of the cans to our cats. Microwaving the refrigerated leftovers doesn't work, nor does mixing warm water or broth. The solution is to PLEASE provide the product in smaller cans. Thank you!!!!! by on 09/19/2016
My Review
Frances my cat is on the y/d diet and I give her wet ,dry food.i buy the small cans and after I open them I put it in the frig.you might want to call around and see if you can buy the small cans from another vet by on 09/17/2016
The best

yd thyroid health feline can food
my cat is 16 1/2 yrs old & eating the dry as well as can throid health yd feline food her T4 level is acceptable now thanks by on 08/28/2016
so glad vet recommended
Our thyroid cat went from 15lbs to 7 lbs in about a year. He did poorly on medication for thyroid. Vet said to stop meds and ONLY give him Hills y/d (to starve his thyroid of iodine). He stopped vomiting and is doing really well. by on 08/25/2016
Good Quality Food but Expensive
We have been feeding Hills Y/D for about 4-5 years and before that Hills OM to our now 16 year old Tabby. The quality of food is good and our cat enjoys it. My issue is the cost is going up significantly faster then inflation - every year a large increase. Quality food should and does cost more then "average" but I wish Hills was more reasonable on the annual increases. by on 07/23/2016
Ivan loves this food!
My Ivan was diagnosed hyperthyroid 4 months ago, loves the food , both wet and dry. His T4 went from 10.4 to 3.4 in 7 weeks, just had his bloodwork done again after 8 weeks and it improved even more. He has gone from being a crazy hyper 13 year old to a calm, loving 13 year old. by on 07/09/2016
So dry!
My cat liked this food at first but now wants nothing to do with it! It's so dry and plain. Should make smaller, single serving cans and add more gravy! They say it really works to bring down thyroid level but she first needs to eat it. by on 07/03/2016
Yd diet
My cat has been on this diet for almost 2 years and is doing great. by on 06/29/2016
discouraged so far...
Like many others have stated, my cat will only eat the first serving...amd chicken broth doesn't help with leftovers. She's also indifferent to the dry as well, though she does nibble on it. Smaller portions, please!! Many of us buy in bulk so it can't be cost prohibitive. The next step might be making a very difficult decision. by on 05/20/2016
I'd recommend if your cat doesn't pill well
So, my 11 year old Siamese came down with thyroid issues last summer and took the canned option of y/d after talking with the vet about either to do the radiation, pills or try the food. I wasn't looking forward to pilling him every meal, so he got on the canned food and his thyroid levels got better. he seemed to like it ok but I was sad at first that it didn't come in chicken which is his favorite but thankfully they put out a new flavor with chicken so I felt better about it. I did notice his fur wasn't as shinny and smooth so he looked older but just thought it might have been due to aging. Also, another thing kinda came up of him becoming constipated only a month or so of him getting on the food. mixed it in with pumpkin which helped some but poor guy still had a hard time pooping. then, about 6 weeks ago, I noticed he would leave about a half cans worth of food in his bowl dispite his reputation of eating all his food in one sitting and then doing his ritual of saying he's hungry while half the bowl still has food in it. So, even though it was chicken flavored, it wasn't seeming to be something he wanted to eat. end of the story is, I decided to go with the pills instead mainly for budgeting reasons as well as his blood levels were in the normal range because of the diet however his doc thought they should be a little more controlled and put him on a name brand grain free diet for seniors. he's doing so much better now! the pills are going fine and his constipation is just about gone after changing his diet for 3 days. he eats his food just fine, his fur is a lot smoother and luscious like it used to be and just as playful as ever. I think if a kitty came down with thyroid issues more midlife and/or won't take a pill, this could be a viable option if radiation isn't recommended or economically plausible. I don't think it has the right mix for a senior's needs hence the constipation came up and probably need to work on the flavor a bit since my cat that eats cardboard and hair got tired of eating this lol. plus, it has a nasty habit of drying out before the next meal time and no variety in texture so not appealing for cats that like to see bites or tidbits of food like mine... what can I say, he's high maintainence but worth all the effort and then some =). so, in sum, it's worth a try if it's recommended but don't have your heart set that your fur-baby will want to eat this for the rest of their lives. by on 03/03/2016
Excellent and i would even pay a tad more if......
Excellent. However, i agree with others. My cat will eat the food but only 1 or 2 portions at a time. My cat will not eat the food after the cat has been open a day or more. Putting the cat food in the refrigerator with a cover does not help. How about selling the cat food in smaller cans? Which means that will cost more for Hills to do. I would not mind a tad increase in price to cover that cost of using more cans[DONT OVER DO IT] As it is now, i usually have to throw half the food away. My cat agrees with me. by on 02/09/2016
Good start but...
My cat is on Y/D exclusively, both dry and canned. She eats very little food, always been that way, even before she had to be on Y/D.. She cannot get through a whole can of Y/D before something changes at about the three-day point...she will not touch it. I end up throwing out half a can and opening a new one. Very consistent behavior. Yes, I keep it sealed and in a refrigerator always, as soon as its opened. Something happens after three days, she won't touch it. Can you fix that? And, more flavors might help, too. by on 01/18/2016
One flavor and no juices?
Just got a couple of cans to start for my cat. But if it only comes in one flavor and in paste form, this won't last long. by on 01/12/2016
Great For Special Needs Cats
This is a great food. My cat has thyroid problems and eats this food exclusively. Seems to help the problem. It is a pricey food but works. by on 10/07/2015
Cat loves it!!!!
My cat has thyroid issues. Rather than surgery or meds we are trying the diet path. She likes the food and in the first month her thyroid score went down about 30%. We are continuing the program and looking for another nice decrease in 30 days. by on 09/23/2015
Kitty won't eat the canned food but likes the dry food.
My cat will not even take one bite of this canned food. I feel terrible for her because she seems to be craving more food with her thyroid condition. She never ate human food before but something about restricting the iodine in her diet with the dry food (which she loves!) makes her go crazy when we are cooking and eating. The vet says she cannot have anything other than the y/d food or else it will not be effective. I wish the canned version was appealing to her and/or there were treats in the y/d. by on 09/20/2015
effective product, but way overpriced
When I finally got the product I started to see changes almost immediately. Teddy started out scrawny at only 7 lbs and has gained over a pound in a month. The price however, is way out of line. Lower income people with hyperthyroid cats will have no choice but to let their pet suffer. It's cat food... and the culprit in hyperthyroid seems to be fish. I am sure there's other good things in this formulation, but not enough to warrant the outrageous price. I would also like to see a moister consistency (gravy). by on 09/11/2015
didn't like the flavor
I wanted to try this because my cat is unable to tolerate methimazole any more. he was only lukewarm about eating it and after 3 weeks he refused to eat it. he likes the A/D though :) by on 06/01/2015
Works but needs improvement
This product has improved my cat's health. However, without going into a lot of my cat's health history, here's what we need from you: 1. Small portioned cans so our babies can get that "fresher" taste and texture each time, without having to refrigerate leftovers. They need this to make it more palatable, and we owners need this feature to make it more cost effective. 2. I understand the difficulty in having variation in the flavor, because of the precise levels of ingredients, etc., but with all of the advances made in cat food, surely there is something that can be done, especially for the price we are paying. 3. Specially formulated "treats" for cats would be wonderful. Thank you for letting me share my concerns. This truly is a great product. by on 05/13/2015
Need smaller portion cans
My cat has been on a restricted diet of y/d dry and wet for approximately 8 months. She enjoys the dry food, but does not take more than a few bites of the wet canned y/d at one feeding. It would be great if the wet food came in much smaller single-portion cans. Overall, the y/d diet has preserved my geriatric cat's life. She no longer takes the oral meds, has stopped vomiting, has stopped losing weight. She is not gaining weight and is still very thin, but her overall health and demeanor is improved due to strict diet of Hill's y/d. At 19 years old, surgery or radioiodine are not practical management strategies for her thyroid tumor. by on 03/26/2015
Excellent Product for a Hyperthyroid Cat
My cat loves both the canned Y/D diet and the dry Y/D diet. The dry Y/D is his primary sustenance. The canned is a firm solid that I cut into little bite-sized meatballs and serve as a treat when the family sits down to dinner together. He absolutely loves both of these. The Y/D diet controlled his body functions within 8 hours of starting the product. I feed him exclusively this product. His body functions are normal and regular, his fur is great and he's a happy cat again. Thank you for a great product. by on 02/16/2015
More of a variety and smaller cans.
My cats do not like the texture of the wet food at all. As a consumer I would like to see more of a variety and smaller cans. by on 01/23/2015
Needs more moisture & other flavors, including hairball
I am happy to say that this product has helped my 2 senior cats' thyroid issues & they no longer require medications. BUT, I'm sad to say that both cats do not come running to eat this canned food; but, they will eat it eventually. It is VERY dry & needs more moisture/gravy, as they were used to for 16 yrs. Also, I don't understand why there is only 1 type of canned. My cats are now throwing up more hairballs b/c I used to feed them a canned "hairball" formula. (They can be cranky and don't like to be brushed.) So, Hill's folks: KUDOS for this product working, but PLEASE come up with (soon please!) some more flavors and an anti-hairball version that my cats will like (it is sad to see them walk away when i put it in their bowls). And, I would also like it if i don't have to clean up throw-ups off my carpet! Thank you! by on 01/22/2015
Really worked
Thankfully my cat enjoys the flavor of y/d, I add water and make a gravy which she really likes. Meds didn't work for my cat and she wasn't getting better. What a great option that solved her problem in a more natural way. by on 01/21/2015
Great food...but they need to make the 2.9 oz. cans!
This is a great product! My cat was recently diagnosed & we tried this food to avoid daily medication. It successfully decreased his thyroid levels. We feed a combination of the dry & canned y/d. It would be GREAT if they made the smaller 2.9 oz. cans too though. My cat only eats a little serving of canned food daily & we end up wasting a lot. More flavors please! It's expensive but worth every penny. by on 11/11/2014
The formula seems to be working
The food itself is so dry we have to make it into a soup for my cat to eat. I have to continue to add water while a small amount is consumed. by on 10/21/2014
The product cured my cat's thyroid problem
After a month on the y/d food, my cat's thyroid returned to normal and he has gained 3 pounds, which he needed to do. However, the product is very expensive. by on 10/09/2014
Life saver
My cat's health has imporved so much in one month, the vet was impressed, we hope to keep him comfortable and as healthy as we can for the months to follow, and even show the vet is wrong on his lifespan prodicition of only months, let's go for at least a year ! good product
very happy this product is working well for my cat and he enjoys it, thank you. by on 09/24/2014
She's improving-Hills helps--I assume
Nearly lost my 13 year old cat--medical alternatives were well, not alternatives. She's been on this in wet and dry food = she is principally better..though not perfect..remember the food does not have a medication in it. The diet is designed around a less than normal functioning thyroid. After three weeks my cat is heavier and stronger and returned to playing with her toy mouse. by on 09/23/2014
my alternative to the cat thyroid medication
My cat likes the food best when I first open the can. I cover the remaining can food with tin foil and put it in a plastic deli type container with lid to seal it the best I can. It always begins to get very dry. I heat it a little in the microwave to get the chill out and I add a little water. She eats it but she is not thrilled with it. Please make this y/d thyroid can food to be more moist or not to dry out in this manner. She also eats the y/d dry food so she has a choice. She eats it a little at a time, because she is still hungry or there is no can food left in her dish, I want her to eat both. Once again she is not really thrilled. by on 09/18/2014
pet health
Expensive food but does the job for my elderly cat with thyroid issues who is doing much better since using y/d by on 09/14/2014
THANKS!!!!
This product has helped my cat so much! It made her thyroid level get back to normal and she started to gain back weight!.I will always by this food, Thanks so much for making my cat stay healthy! I can't live without her. by on 08/28/2014
My cat's health improved without medication
Our 17-yr old cat, Willie, had lost three pounds and his coat was looking rough. After being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, we put him on the y/d diet - both wet and dry. Although we were supposed to introduce it gradually to replace his other food, he ate it with such enthusiasm that we were able to make the changeover within just a few days. He is back to his normal weight, his coat looks great, and he doesn't need medication. I am so happy with the results of this diet. by on 08/27/2014
Great
My 16yr old cat is doing much better after 2 weeks, eating well coat is getting better by on 08/10/2014
y-d Prescription diet does everything they say it will and
Medication was way too risky for our 17 year old Spanky. We had tried it and his white cell count went down way too low after only a short period of taking it. We feared that our finicky old cat would not like the Y-D, but instead he loves it and after only 2 months, his thyroid numbers are normal! Thank you and kudos to Hill's for a prescription food that does everything it is supposed to do. by on 08/03/2014
Very dry and unappetising
The canned food is very dry and I must add water to it to make it palatable for my cat. Even then, just feeding her a third of a can, she leaves a good amount of it in the dish. She was used to eating a 3ounce can of a non related food each morning and licking the dish clean, so I know she is not liking this food as much. The smell is not appealing to me, so maybe the same is putting her off too. She will need to be on this food for the rest of her life so I wish this product was more to our liking. She is also getting the same for her dry kibble and does snack on that through out the day. by on 08/02/2014
lack of taste
My cat won't go near it. He will eat the dry y/d to keep from starving. by on 07/20/2014
Helps stabilize my cat's thyroid
My cat likes it and along with his medication he is kept at a stable level. by on 06/28/2014
great benefit, horrible price
Y/D food is great if your cat is not responding well to prescription medication. It made a huge change in our 15yr old cat. However, the cost is extremely prohibitive, and I have a feeling the large majority of everyday people would not be able to afford this food. by on 06/23/2014
Doing Well
Zoe has been on the y-d food and is now in the normal range...all her vitals are good...still using a syringe to feed her to boost her intake....she loves the dry food more....thank you so much! by on 06/23/2014
Just The Ticket!
My cat, Friskey, had been on MD canned food which worked good for five years. Then his doctor changed him to YD which worked wonders for him!! He is 16 years old and going strong!!! Wonderful food!!! It has kept my baby alive and healthy!!! by on 06/19/2014
Product has helped my 13 year-old cat avoid taking meds for
This product has helped my cat avoid taking meds for her hyperthyroidism. She has gained back weight, maybe even a bit too much, but I'm very happy the food has helped. A lower price would make it perfect. by on 06/16/2014
my cat is now off of her thyroid medicine with only the cat
My cat is now off of her thyroid medicine with only the YD cat food this was particularly awesome because previously she was on ID due to severe pancreatic attacks. It is well worth the money I feed it to all 3 cats but augment the other 2 cats (no thyroid issues) with daily tablespoon of regular cat food at the vets recommendation. I had a 20 yo cat that was on kd for about 8 years before this one. I am convinced of that your products have helped my cats live longer lives by on 05/28/2014
Cat doesn't love it
I am grateful to have a special food for my cat that contributes to improving her health, however, it is tough to get her to eat the canned food. She'll smell it and walk away. She is hungry and tries to steal other food. The consistency is extremely dry so I typically add water to moisten which helps if she is hungry enough. Because she has other health issues, her low weight is a big concern. Improving flavor would be a huge help! by on 05/22/2014
Transition from former food to Y/D was not a problem.
I was initially concerned that moving from her former name brand wet food to Y/D might be a problem but my cat really seems to enjoy the taste and texture of her new prescription food. by on 05/21/2014
Saved our hyperthyroid cat.
We adopted an aged hyperthyroid cat. We were unable to get medicine down her consistently. The y/d cat food brought her thyroid levels down to normal. I recommend the y/d. It is expensive but not when compared to the cost of medicine or veterinary visits. We have been able to manage our cat's health with fewer veterinary visits. It is also much less stressful for our cat. by on 05/06/2014
Vet requested this
My vet requested that I use this product I have a 15 year old cat that was possibly starting to have thyroid problems due to some of the tests she did.I also have a younger cat so before I asked if it would be alright for that one to eat it also due to the expensiveness slightly. I really couldn't afford to buy two different types of cat food. She told me it would not be a problem have noticed one thing at least with my younger cat he doesn't eat it like he was starving and than few minutes later upchucking it. So I think it is a blessing even for him even though he really doesn't need it., Dealing with my older cat she gets the wet food the younger one will not touch the wet food has never like wet food. I also think it is helping my baby girl who is the one that it is prescribed for it by on 04/28/2014
Outstanding product
This product actualy works but looses it's aroma and flavor quickly and my cat can't eat a whole can in 1 day . Wish it was made in smaller cans . by on 04/26/2014
Taste must be good
Our cat woofs down (or meows down) this stuff. Thyroid levels returned to normal with meds before going 99% y/d, but the meds caused almost daily hair balls. So, for the last 3 months it has been y/d on the menu (to the cat's delight). Too soon to check the result regarding thyroid condition - but we sure have a happy well fed cat. by on 04/03/2014
Our Cat eats all of her food; a mix of wet and dry
Te wet cat food could be made a bit more moist so it would mix better with the dry food by on 03/09/2014
Way better than pills every day
My cat would never swallow a pill every day. Luckily she does eat the canned food pretty well. It has done it's job and her thyroid level is under control. I hate paying so much for one can of food. by on 03/08/2014
Cat enjoys this product.
It had been ordered by the Veterinarian and this was the main reason I bought it. The cat eats it fine. weather or not it will help her thyroid remains to be seen, as she has not eaten it for a very long time. It is a little costly, but I suppose if it improves her health, it is worth it. by on 02/21/2014
My cat and I like this product.
He seems to be doing well. His fur coat has gotten silky, soft, and shiny. His lab values since on this food have been WNL, by on 02/13/2014
Hill's Prescription Diet Y/D Thyroid Health
Hill's Y/D is a great alternative for treating cats with Hyperthyroidism. The two other options were to have my cat go through radiation or give her daily medication. The Y/D was the best option for us since Cassie is 15 years old. by on 02/05/2014
Saved my Misty's Life
This is a great alternative to medication for a cat with hyperthyroidism. My schedule is such that I could not be home to medicate my cat everyday. Misty had advanced hyperthyroidism and weighed only 6.5 lbs when I changed her diet to Y/D. I am happy to report that she gained 1 lb and her thyroid levels are half of what they were when we started this new diet. Be mindful that this is a strict diet you will need to adhere to it. Hope you experience the same results we did. It's worth the expense. by on 01/20/2014
Our cat was losing hair and not keeping food down
After our vet put her on the y/d prescription diet, she began to feel more like herself. Kept her food down, stopped losing hair and put on some weight. So glad that there is a prescription diet food available for pets to help keep them healthy. by on 12/29/2013
It works!
I had a real hard time using the pills to try to regulate my cats hypothyroid problem. My vet could not seem to get it right he would go from hyper to hypo thyroid, but could not seem to get it in the normal range! Meanwhile my cat acted like I was not feeding him , starving all the time! It was awful! I heard of the hills diet but had not tried it. Well, what a difference it has made! My cat within a couple weeks went back to his old self again and his appetite returned to normal . My cat LOVES the food too which is great! Thank you hills for making this great diet! by on 12/20/2013
Better alternative to medication
Our 12 year old cat has a slightly elevated thyroid. We are trying this food with her instead of medication (which can be detrimental). She likes the wet but not the dry. We are getting her tested again soon to see if it works as Hill's claims it does. We are keeping our fingers crossed! by on 12/11/2013
Great Product
My 15 year old cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism with a T level slightly above 7. My vet recommended starting him on the y/d food. I bought the canned and dry food. Jack has been eating the y/d for about 3 weeks now and has shown signs of improvement. He is no longer roaming the house at night meowing. His sleep patterns have improved and he is actually playing again. I will give the food another month or so and take him back to the vet for another blood draw to see where his T levels are. I am very pleased with this product. by on 12/11/2013
Socks doesn't approve
Dear Hills, please improve your canned y/d food. I would likes my foods to have real meats and vegetables in it. The y shouldn't stand for yucky and I shouldn't be stuck eating just this one flavor for the rest of my life. ~Socks The Ideal Balance canned dog food we won looks so appealing while this looks most unappealing and smells awful. I can't blame my cat for not wanting to eat it and trying to sneak the dog food. It certainly isn't an easy way to manage my cats thyroid health as he hates the food and is constantly trying to find other food to eat. In a multiple pet household it is very changeling to keep other food out of his reach as he will literally take the dogs food away from them while they are eating. They thyroid pills (which Socks can no longer take due to problems with anemia) were much easier and cheaper. by on 11/22/2013

Helping to Make Morris Well
I am using this product in conjunction with the dry food y/d. It is slowly working, and Morris is getting healthier. My only wish is that it were available in smaller cans. He eats it willingly on the day I open the can, but on "leftovers" days, he is not so enthused. I've tried warming it up a bit, and that helps, but I wish the smaller cans were an option. by on 10/07/2013
Great to have a food instead of drugs for this condition!
-My calico cat Mizzie is almost 17, she'd been so sick/ lost so much weight I thought she'd used up all her 9 Lives! Her previous Vet misdiagnosed her, so years passed with her getting worse and getting monthly prednisone shots. He prescribed the expensive Hill's Rx food, dry and canned, but they didn't help. Her new Vet tested properly and prescribed the Y/D and the thyroid medication - she was highly allergic to it, had to stop the drug. -She's improved drastically since being on the canned Y/D, she only nibbles at the dry food infrequently. She won't eat only the can Y/D, with her Vet's knowledge, I cook chicken breasts/tenders in unsalted natural chicken broth and shred into tiny pieces ... she doesn't bite into and chew her food so I shred the chicken, removing skin/gristle. -I empty can content into glass bowl, chill in the fridge, easier to handle. Wearing disposable gloves, roll the food into small balls, then break off and roll them into very tiny balls. Mixed in dish with the shredded chicken, topped with chicken broth, she loves it, hasn't gained much weight but filled out. Spine/hip bones were protruding, now covered with flesh. Coat thick/shiny, she's as alert/active as a kitten. - One issue: the top, bottom and sides of the food are darker, firmer from the oxidation process of canning, Used to scrape it off , too much/waste expense. Now I mix very thoroughly, pressing the firmer parts into same consistency, wearing gloves, stinky/hard to get odor off skin/nails. Same with the chicken! -I, too, wish I had known there were coupons, it is very expensive. Am hoping to get coupons soon for future purchases. Cost of a case is a struggle to keep paying, but I want to keep my cat healthy - and alive. by on 10/07/2013
Returned our senior cat to health
Our 15 year old female cat was in very poor health weighing only 3 pounds and loosing weigh even though she ate constantly. When she was diagnosed with a thyroid condition, the Vet recommended Hills y/d Thyroid Health dry and moist food. After only a few weeks she was gaining weight and back to her old self. We adopted two new kittens and the 15 year old is keeping up with them and playing like a much younger cat. by on 09/01/2013
Great for our cat!
We lovingly refer to this food as Jack's "yummy diet" for the y/d in the name. Without this food our cat would be sick at every meal. It is the ony thing that has allowed him to stop losing weight and live a normal life. I just wish it wasn't quite so expensive. by on 08/14/2013
Hill's Prescription Diet y/d Feline Health
Lucy is a 13 year old white fluffy furball cat. She started losing weight, being restless, and hungry all the time. The vet said it was her thyroid. He started her on Hills. I had my doubts. After a few months on Hill's she started to get back to her old self, no longer begging for food constantly. Her last check up, her blood was good, heart rate good, and she had gained five ounces. Thanks Hill's!!!! by on 03/29/2013
So far so good
My 15 year old cat has been on this diet for one year this month. She has gained a half pound and does not throw up all the time like she did before. I have another cat and that makes it hard to make sure she does not get his food. I have had a few occasions where she has gotten his food but for the most part she only gets this food and likes it. I use the canned and then keep the dry out for her. My other cat likes the food too but I make sure he gets some food with iodine every day. I had him checked at his last appointment and his thyroid is fine. by on 01/16/2013
This product works well to keep our cat healthy
I like that my cat can stay healthy by eating food instead of taking medication. My only suggestion is that you might also make this product in smaller cans since she will only eat 1/2 of the can at a time and only when it is freshly opened. She will not eat it after being tightly sealed and stored in the refrigerator. Even heating slightly in the microwave does not help. The veterinarian suggested mixing in low salt chicken broth or canned pumpkin, but that did not help. I feel like I am wasting so much food! by on 11/26/2012
