How does Hill's Urinary diet work?
Answer

Hill's Urinary diet functions as a dissolution diet, targeting the aggressive reduction of struvites in pets. Specifically designed to address urinary issues, it mitigates crystal formation, bladder stones, and related concerns in dogs. This diet maintains bladder health by regulating highly digestible protein levels, minimizing sodium content, and stabilizing urine pH. These measures ensure the overall well-being of the urinary system, offering a complete and balanced solution for managing urinary issues effectively.

Which dog food is most suitable for urinary tract infections?
Answer

For urinary tract infections, several dog foods are highly recommended. Hill's Urinary Care Dry Food stands out as the best overall option, specifically formulated to support urinary health. For a premium choice, Nom Nom Pork Potluck provides freshly prepared meals tailored to urinary health needs. Purina Urinary Dry Dog Food offers excellent value without compromising on quality. Royal Canin Urinary Moderate Calorie is another reputable option, balancing nutritional requirements with urinary tract support. Additionally, Hill's Prescription Multicare Dog Food offers a moist alternative for dogs requiring urinary care. These options cater to various preferences and budgets, ensuring effective management and prevention of urinary tract infections in dogs.

How long should a dog be on a urinary food diet?
Answer

For long-term urinary health maintenance, you need to keep your dog on urinary food for an initial period of up to six months. This duration allows for sufficient time to address urinary issues and stabilize your dog's condition. However, it's crucial to regularly re-evaluate your dog's health status, as indicated by the underlying condition. Regular check-ups with your veterinarian can help assess the effectiveness of the urinary diet and determine if any adjustments are necessary. After the initial period, your veterinarian may recommend continuing with the urinary food or transitioning to a maintenance diet.

What is the best urinary tract treatment for dogs?
Answer

The most effective urinary tract treatment for dogs typically involves antibiotics tailored to the specific bacterial strain causing the infection. Recommended drugs for uncomplicated UTIs include amoxicillin, cephalosporins, and trimethoprim-sulfonamide. According to Linda Ruth, a retired veterinarian, the best antibiotic is determined after conducting a bacterial culture and sensitivity test. While awaiting test results, veterinarians often prescribe antibiotics based on their experience with prevalent bacteria causing UTIs in the area. This approach ensures targeted treatment and helps prevent antibiotic resistance.Reference: https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-best-antibiotic-for-a-dog-with-a-UTI/answer/Linda-Ruth-35?ch=10&oid=1477743734880324&share=c3cf258b&srid=hpmxqX&target_type=answer

What are the natural remedies for urine infection in dogs?
Answer

Home remedies for urinary tract infections (UTIs) in dogs encompass various natural options. Cranberry, parsley leaf, couch grass, and apple cider vinegar are among the supplements believed to potentially enhance the effects of prescription medicines. However, consulting a veterinarian before trying any home remedy is crucial. According to Chris Bern, DVM from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, while these remedies may offer some benefits, they may not effectively resolve bacterial infections without antibiotics. Cranberry supplements, often touted for their UTI-fighting properties, have limited evidence of efficacy in both humans and animals. Bern emphasizes the importance of antibiotics in treating bacterial infections, cautioning against relying solely on supplements. Thus, while natural remedies may complement traditional treatments, antibiotics remain essential for resolving urinary tract infections in dogs.Reference: https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-treat-a-dog-s-UTI-without-antibiotics/answer/Chris-Bern-2?ch=10&oid=294941316&share=1fffcc3d&srid=hpmxqX&target_type=answer

What happens when a dog has a UTI?
Answer

When a dog has a urinary tract infection (UTI), they experience symptoms similar to humans. Mandy Easterbrook recounts her experience with her 12-year-old lurcher, highlighting the discomfort dogs endure. Observing her dog's behavior, Easterbrook noticed signs such as increased urination and blood in the urine, prompting a visit to the veterinarian. Upon examination and a urine sample analysis, the UTI was confirmed, and treatment commenced with painkillers and antibiotics. However, when the symptoms persisted, further investigations revealed a more serious underlying conditionโ€”bladder cancer. Easterbrook's account emphasizes the importance of seeking veterinary care promptly when a dog shows signs of a UTI. While UTIs are common, they could indicate other health issues, including more severe conditions like cancer. Early detection and intervention are critical for ensuring the best possible outcome for the dog's health and well-being.Reference: https://www.quora.com/What-happens-when-a-dog-has-a-UTI/answer/Mandy-Easterbrook?ch=10&oid=365164123&share=277ef58c&srid=hpmxqX&target_type=answer

How long can a UTI last in dogs?
Answer

A urinary tract infection (UTI) in dogs is typically treated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic for about 14 days once detected. This treatment regimen aims to effectively eliminate the infection and alleviate symptoms. Generally, dogs start to feel better within the first few days of antibiotic therapy. However, the exact duration of a UTI can vary depending on factors such as the dog's overall health and the severity of the infection. Prompt and proper treatment is crucial to prevent the UTI from worsening or leading to complications. Therefore, monitoring the dog's response to treatment and completing the full course of antibiotics is essential for ensuring the infection is properly resolved.

Now too sloppy.

Originally prescribed for our dog. Whilst expensive it was the only urinary related product available so we have purchased it for a number of years. The consistency of the product has deteriorated in the past 12 year. Seems that there is more water being added to increase profits.

Bladder stones returned

My older 8+ year old male Shih Tzu had bladder surgery in 4/18 to remove stones in his bladder and urethra. He was put on C/D Diet, both dry and wet once the stones were evaluated. He is now scheduled to have more stones removed this coming Wednesday. The vet did not give me other options. Am now searching for recipes for homemade dogs food. very expensive to not work.

Pet needs to be on U/D. We buy it by the case. When we open a new case we are never sure what condition/consistency the contents will be. Hill's assures us the dog food is good, which is a relief. However, we have had to call twice because each case is so different from the last.

No recurrance of stones in 1.5 years
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My terrier Tessa had 2 bladder stone surgeries a year apart. First she had struvite stones, the second time she had oxalate stones. She began this food after her second surgery and has been healthy for a year and a half. My heart broke when she decided out of the blue to stop eating it one day. I had to switch to a different brand but am worried she will get stones again. If she wasn't such a picky eater I would still have her on this food today, it sure did the trick. And funny thing was she loved it for a year and a half! Who knows, she is a strange dog.

A Safe, Effective Diatary Dog Food
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Unfortunately, one of my adopted dogs developed a urinary condition resulting in crystals forming in the urinary canal. But fortunately, my vet diagnosed the problem early and prescribed Hill's u/d dog food for long term control of this condition. After starting this regimen with the u/d diet, immediate positive results occurred and my dog has thrived on the Hill's brand. And, with my confidence in resolving this issue with one pet, I started feeding my other dog the Hill's Beef & Barley; both dogs have been on this diet for five years and they are thriving with no medical problems. I would recommend an appropriate Hill's brand food for any dog or feline owner. If you want a healthy, happy pet with a beautiful coat consider feeding them one of the wonderful Hill's pet foods.

Thanks to Hill's Prescription Diet I don't have to worry about my dog having the problems he's had in the past. B
It seems to be working.

Kat is on the UD because she had crystals in her urine. She is not crazy about the dry food so I bought the canned to mix in with the dry. The canned food is too dry to coat the dry food to her taste. It is also too dry to wrap around the antibiotic capsules that she is currently taking. Lucky for me she usually swallows the chucnk with the pill in it without tasting it. The canned UD is too pricey for me to give it to her exclusively. I would suggest that you consider putting a "pop-top" type of lid on it.

Bladder Stones

My Bichons love the taste of the food, but don't like they get less as the Kcal is higher than other non-prescription varieties. The benefit is that our older mail bichon has trimmed down from 15.3lbs to around 13.6lbs at age 12+. We are hoping the modified diet will slow the growth of the males bladder stones as we've had one surgery and now 2 basket retrievals in the last 4 years; we just switched since the last procedure about 4 months ago on recommendation from the U of M Vet Clinic....we're hopeful!

My dogs love the taste of this prescription food.

I had absolutely no problem switching my dogs to UD. They eat dry for meals and receive small can amounts for treats and to take medication with. They really feel like they are getting a treat. The only problem I have with the canned food is that it crumbles when you try to push the pills inside. I wish the consistency was a little better.

My pup loves it!

When our vet prescribed this food I was afraid it would smell medicinal, or so unlike regular dog food that Reagan wasn't going to touch it. But he chomped right in. The price is very reasonable considering the benefits and he has been doing fine since his first bite.

Seems to be maintaining his bladder stone issues and he

My nine year old dalmation had emergency surgery for bladder stones 6 months ago. My vet informed me that one of the best recommendations that he could make that may prevent future problems would be to feed him UD prescription can food. I want to give him every chance, so I agreed. He loves the tastes, his energy has increased and so far the bladder issues are being held at bay. Other than the product being a bit pricey,,, I can't say enough good things about this diet.

Canine UD keeps my Pugs stone free!!!

I can trust Hill's with the health of my pets. I have two pugs that were diagnosed with calcium oxalates in their urinary bladders. They love the food and go crazy for it at meal time. Palatability was never an issue. The food is very cost effective because it prevents the huge expense of surgery. And it saves my dogs from going under the knife again! Included is a picture of the bladder stones from one of my pugs. I adopted him so he could have his surgery and not be euthanized!

He likes it! Hey, doggie!

From the time they were puppies, my dogs, Regan & Taco, would eat anything once. Once being the operative word! I would bring them food, put it in their bowl and they would eat like they hadn't been fed in weeks. But the next day they would sniff it and look up as if to say, "Not this..... again." I literally had 5 different types/brands of food for them, and I couldn't give them the same thing 2 days in a row. My vet suggested Hill's prescription diet wet, so I gave it a shot. They love it! The sound of the can opener longer causes them to bark, instead it makes them run around in circles at my feet. Thanks!
