What Is Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Heart Care Canned Dog Food?

Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Heart Care Canned Dog Food is a medical diet specifically formulated to support your dog's heart health. Supporting cardiovascular function in dogs who are on the verge of developing heart disease or those who already have it is vitally important to ensure their survival and quality of life.

An Introduction to Heart Disease in Dogs

Heart disease can take several forms in dogs. Dogs can be born with heart defects, have a genetic predisposition to heart problems, and develop heart issues due to poor lifestyle and diet. Your vet can use x-rays, electro- or cardiography, or cardiac catheterization to diagnose whether your dog has this disease.

Untreated heart disease can result in heart failure, so it is imperative to take your dog to the vet if you see any symptoms. Your dog can suddenly become weak and become intolerant of exercise. They might have breathing difficulties, high pulse rate, and a swollen abdomen.

Because the heart is too weak or damaged to pump blood correctly, your dog may even lose consciousness; their skin can appear bluish and might lose their appetite. Appetite loss is typically accompanied by sudden weight loss. Other symptoms you can look out for are signs of jaundice, bloody cough, or the appearance of bloody mucous.

How Does Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Heart Care Canned Dog Food Help?

Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Heart Care Canned Dog Food provides a complete medical diet that is designed to support your dog's cardiovascular system. The nutrients are formulated in precise proportions so that your dog can maintain healthy blood pressure and pump enough blood to support your dog's body.

Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Heart Care Canned Dog Food promotes fluid retention in your dog, which is imperative to prevent dehydration. Additionally, dogs with heart problems are often prescribed diuretic medicines. This causes a loss of nutrients through increased urine output. Hill's specialized recipe replenishes these nutrients.

Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Heart Care Canned Dog Food is made with low levels of sodium and high levels of L-carnitine and phosphorus. Controlled protein levels help protect your dog's vital kidney functions to act against multiple organ damage. The added antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins boost your dog's weakened immune system.

How Much of Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Heart Care Canned Dog Food Should I Give My Dog Daily?

The daily amount of Hill's Prescription Diet h/d Heart Care Canned Dog Food your dog needs depends on your dog's weight. You can use the following guidelines:

Dog's WeightDaily Feed (can)5 lbcan10 lbcan15 lb1 can20 lb1 cans30 lb1 cans40 lb2 cans50 lb2 cans60 lb2 cans70 lb3 cans80 lb3 cans100 lb4 cans120 lb4 cans

This standard guideline is for 13 oz. can. Please adjust the serving size if using any other size can. If there is any unused portion of food left in the can, make sure you cover it well and refrigerate it till the next meal. Don't leave the food out for too long, and make sure any unused portions are used as early as possible.

It is important to note that these are the total amounts you should give your dog every day. So if you have a 40 lb dog, you should give one can for lunch and one can for dinner. Ensure that you don't give double the recommended food to your dog as you risk your dog becoming overweight.

Obesity puts even more pressure on the heart, which can spell disaster for dogs with pre-existing heart issues. If your vet has given you different instructions on how much food you should give your dog, you should follow those.

M
Wonderful Dog Food!

It's terrific and the kibble size is perfect!! Most of the food anymore, dog toys and obvious niceties are everywhere but we understand and wait for the mini fungus.75 acceptability in the last 30 years has been for the increased attention and desire for these small dogs- While large breeds get kind of pushed out of the picture a bit but thank Heaven we're coming back!! There are so many choices for small dogs regarding food including many shapes and sizes. Let the big dogs have this one !! They are gentle giants who love being treated like a baby dog!! ?? It's all good!! Thanks!!

Smaller Kibble PLEASE!!

My micro Yorkie was placed on this food about a year ago. She HATED IT. Each kibble was about the size of a cocoa puff...HUGE. So, I'd take a small batch in a zip log bag to the carport & beat it with a hammer to crush it up...I just bought a second bag & the kibble IS smaller than before, but would like it even smaller. My girl likes the improved taste.

They NEED to make this dog food for smaller breeds

I think the quality is excellent. It's the most recommended food per my dog's vet for heart failure. My only and biggest con is that I have a Pomeranian and this dog food is HARD and really big. I literally have to smash it with a dumbbell to crack it into smaller pieces for her. If it wasn't the only one on the market I'd get another one but there isn't so it looks like I'll have to either blend it to crumbs or smash it every day to make it smaller.

Excellent quality, tasty food my dog loves!

I am a foster parent of a 1.5 year old French Bulldog that has three different heart conditions. I ordered this food in the hopes it would help him, though my vet recommended to start with k/d because it might taste better for him. Well, he LOVES this food and I feel at peace knowing I'm giving him what he needs and everything he doesn't need.

We need small bites for little dogs please.

I have a 9 lb Maltese and a 9 lb Yorkie, both seniors with heart problems. They need small bites please. You can keep selling me the huge bag but they have a hard time with this huge food and my vet said the only other option is wet food, so here we are.

Need some changes

It is very difficult to find low sodium dog food, but the kibble in this is too large for my small, elderly dog and the bag is too large.

Need smaller kibble!

I don't understand why this isn't offered in a small kibble since heart disease seems to be so prevalent in small and toy dogs. Almost all reviews state the same concern. It's very tedious having to break it up with a hammer for my tiny pomeranian. I've never had an issue finding dog food for a small/toy breed until now, and you're the only ones who have this food, so I don't have a choice. Shame on you for not taking care of the little ones. It's a great product but very Inconvenient.

I
Need smaller kibbles
VERIFIED PURCHASER

I'm still in the process of switching my dog to the h/d and he seems to like it. He's actually been on the i/d due to a recent issue and the kibble of the i/d is a perfect size for my senior. Also, I notice that the canned i/d comes in a stew formula, which is nice since I use it as a gravy over the dry food. Since most heart patients seem to be seniors, wouldn't it make sense to make the kibble smaller? And are you working on making a stew formula for the canned h/d?

Smaller kibble would be great
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My 15 yo dog is been doing great with this kibble, but she's old and she has lost some teeth which makes it hard for her to bite on those big kibbles. Before she was on the senior diet that had small bites and it was perfect. Other than that she likes the product.

I don't understand
VERIFIED PURCHASER

This food has the worst ingredients possible for my dog. The main ingredient is corn! There is no real meat in it either. Why did my vet recommend this for heart health. Recent studies have also shown that dogs with heart conditions need protein and this is low in protein. We have opted to switch to a food with better ingredients, low sodium and higher protein level. He is doing much better.

Life Saver

Recently my little Chihuahua was diagnosed with a heart problem. She was placed on medication and the doctor recommended that I switch her food to Prescription H/D. I would do anything to help her live a longer life so I bought the product. She loves the taste and after a few weeks I began to notice a difference. She seems to feel better and while I know the medications play a large part I also believe that the low sodium diet is also doing a great job at keeping her heart as healthy as it can be. The food is designed to help the heart work more efficiently and not stress as much to work. I would recommend this diet to anyone with a pet that has a heart problem.

My dog really likes the taste of the dry food and on

The 8.5 lb bag for large dogs is too small and very expensive. Also when trying to get coupon from website it doesnt print and says I've meet my limit, so I can't always retrieve the coupon. Your staff is very helpful when talking with them.

Need to make Cardiac in smaller portions for small dogs

My 7lbs Maltese has an enlarged heart. His vet prescribed Early Cardiac at first but quickly moved him to Cardiac. Vet said, at the stage he was in, my dogs life expectancy was about 6 months. That was 2 years ago. He's been doing just fine & you wouldn't even know he had a heart condition. The food is definitely doing its job for my dog & I couldn't be happier he loves it. My only complaint would be the size of the packaging. I wish there was the smaller packaging like they have for Early Cardiac. I prefer the dry food so I am forced to buy the huge 18lbs bag. They don't have the smaller 8lbs bag for Cardiac. Buying such a huge bag of food for my 7 lbs dog is really inconvenient. Every time I buy it, I wonder if he will live long enough to finish it. He does. However, it's not as fresh and mostly stale halfway through. That's my only complaint
