How long does it take for gastrointestinal cat food to work?
Answer

Gastrointestinal cat food such as Hill's Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome is designed to address digestive issues in cats, such as irregular bowel movements. While individual responses may differ, the food is designed to encourage regular, healthy stool output. Clinical trials have shown that it can begin to work within a single day. However, it's essential to note that the effectiveness of the food can depend on various factors. This includes the severity of the cat's gastrointestinal issues, their overall health, and adherence to feeding guidelines. Some cats may experience improvements within a day or two, while others may take longer to respond.

Do cats recover from gastroenteritis?
Answer

Cats suffering from gastroenteritis can indeed recover with proper treatment. The prognosis largely depends on the underlying cause, the severity of symptoms, and how promptly treatment is administered. With timely veterinary care, medication, dietary adjustments, and possibly antibiotics if bacterial infection is present, many cats can recover relatively quickly. However, the outcome can be more serious if the condition is left untreated. Pete Wedderburn, a DVM from Ireland, notes that gastroenteritis can lead to severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and complications such as intestinal blockages or secondary infections. Left unchecked, these complications can become life-threatening for the cat.Reference:https://cats.com/gastroenteritis-in-cats

How can I improve my catโ€™s microbiome?
Answer

Improving your cat's microbiome involves several key strategies. Firstly, prioritize a high-quality diet rich in protein. Look for foods with whole animal proteins as the primary ingredients, as these provide essential amino acids and support digestibility. Additionally, incorporate fibers and prebiotics into their diet, which serve as fuel for beneficial gut bacteria. Wendy Brooks, a DVM and the owner of Mar Vista Animal Medical Center in Los Angeles notes that prebiotics are also helpful for inflammatory bowel disease in cats. Whole grains can also contribute to a balanced diet, offering additional fiber and nutrients. To further support your cat's microbiome, consider probiotic supplements or foods containing probiotics. These beneficial bacteria can help maintain a healthy gut flora balance. Additionally, ensure your cat stays hydrated, as water is crucial for digestive health.Reference:https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951476

What can you give a cat for an upset stomach?
Answer

For a cat with an upset stomach, it's essential to offer bland, easily digestible foods. Options include boiled chicken or ground turkey, cooked scrambled eggs, or low-fat cottage cheese. These protein sources are gentle on the stomach and provide necessary nutrients. Plain low-fat yogurt containing live cultures can also aid digestion by replenishing beneficial gut bacteria. However, it's crucial to avoid dairy if your cat is lactose intolerant. Carolyn Batten, an experienced pet owner, has found that feeding baby food pumpkin to her cats during episodes of upset stomachs has been highly effective. She also recommends grabbing a pack of Hillโ€™s Nutrition cat food for a sensitive stomach from a pet store nearby, emphasizing its reliability. Batten advises reflecting on any recent dietary changes for your cat and reverting to the previous diet if applicable.Reference:https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-treat-a-cats-upset-stomach

Is gastroenteritis in cats contagious to other cats?
Answer

Gastroenteritis in cats can be contagious in certain cases, primarily depending on the underlying cause. Many infectious agents that lead to symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea are spread through bodily fluids, including feces, vomit, and saliva. Therefore, the isolation of sick cats is crucial to prevent the transmission of the disease to other felines in the household or community. Common infectious causes of gastroenteritis in cats include viral infections like feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), feline calicivirus (FCV), and feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR). Bacterial and parasitic infections can also contribute to gastroenteritis. Additionally, certain toxins or dietary indiscretions can result in gastrointestinal upset but are not contagious. Vaccinations are available for some of the contagious diseases that cause gastroenteritis in cats, such as FPV, FCV, and FVR. Ensuring that all cats in a household are up-to-date on their vaccinations can help prevent the spread of these diseases.

What is a gastro diet for cats?
Answer

A gastrointestinal (GI) diet for cats is specifically formulated to address digestive sensitivities and promote digestive health. These diets are typically prescribed by veterinarians for cats with various gastrointestinal issues, such as vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or pancreatitis. Gastrointestinal cat foods are designed to be highly digestible. They contain easily digestible proteins and carbohydrates to minimize the workload on the digestive system. They often include novel protein sources like chicken, turkey, or fish to reduce the risk of triggering allergic reactions or intolerances. Furthermore, gastrointestinal diets may incorporate prebiotics, which are indigestible fibers fostering the proliferation of beneficial gut bacteria. This supports the equilibrium of microorganisms in the digestive system, which is vital for optimal digestion and overall gastrointestinal well-being.

K
My cats love it

My girl has been suffering from constant diarrhea. She and her healthy brother love this food and it seems to be helping. I only wish there were more flavor varieties to choose from-will that ever be a possibility?

CHUNKS OF CARROT?! Just why??

Okay, we all know that cats are not omnivores, they are obligate carnivores. So WHY are there chunks of freaking carrot in this food?! Also a bunch of barley?? Serious question. What percentage of cats do you think would eat a carrot if offered one? I'm going with maybe 5%? So why the heck are carrots and barely in this food?? My cat who was prescribed this food for chronic diarrhea direct need carrots. No one's cat does.Seriously, get it together.

Need to make a late as some cats like mine don't like chunky

Though good food, my cat will eat juice and leave chunks.

Stains Carpet Terribly

My foster cat is on this prescription food for IBS with chronic vomitting. Carrots just don't seem to be the best choice ingredient for a food intended for animals with chronic gastrointestinal issues. It stains carpeting badly. May seem petty but when living with a pet with this issue it's a big deal in the household over time.

Only thing that works

Our cat has had loose stools since day one. She has IBS. We've tried probiotics, antibiotics, and different types of Hills Science Diet - sensitive stomach formulas, etc. So far, this is the only thing that has worked. It is very expensive but we have no choice.

J
yes

My cat has been on this for a couple of months now and it has really helped but she wont it just that i have to put in maybe a teaspoon of other food . But as long as it is helping i will continue to do it. I would like to know if anybody else have problems with their cat mine has starting to pull out her fur. She has been leaving chunks of her fur where ever she sits .

K
Works, but she requires pate

After nearly three years of chronic diarrhea and multiple vets and tests, I thought all hope was lost and that our girl was doomed to have liquid poo for the rest of her life. Finally, one vet suggested we give this a try. We feed both kibble and wet food, so purchased both and after a couple of weeks, things were finally looking up! However, our princess requires that she only eat pate (with extra warm water added), so I have to mash this stew into oblivion and she'll eat it! Please, Hills, please! Make this in a pate form so that our girl will be extra happy.

Need to have stock available

My ONLY complaint is even though this is on auto ship from two stores we are constantly being told it is out of stock. After spending close to $4000.00 to find out about a chronic condition on my sisters cat we finally hit a food mix that has really worked but we require the ability to get stock. It is extremely frustrating to be willing to spend 50 dollars for 24 cans but we committed to finding a way to keep this two year old cat healthy and he is thriving. It is stressful to constantly be told out of stock.

Miracle food!!

My 6 month olds kitten has had diarrhea since the very beginning. She has been on every antibiotic, probiotic, Hydrolyzed food out there. I had lost hope! After less than a full week, her poops are almost perfect. *KNOCK ON WOOD*. For the first time I have true hope and it's soooo much easier for us both. I wish it was a bit cheaper, but honestly it is worth it!

Please make this available again. Lost without it.

This is the only food that works to help with loose stools. Have tried steroids, gels, powders and pills. Gastrointestinal Biome WET is the only solution I have found that makes a real difference in my cat's comfort and manageability, As the WET food has been "out of stock" for many months, I have been using your Biome dry food product which does not help at all. ONLY THE WET Biome by Hills works. Please bring it back to market and/or let buyers, like myself, know if we will ever see this food back in production.

Great product but ALWAYS out of stock!

Love this food for our cat and it's the only wet food he can tolerate now due to stomach sensitivity. Unfortunately this food always seems to be out of stock when I need more and isn't consistent with supply/demand needs. Hill's needs to work on this issue ASAP as this food is now essential to my cat's health!
