Hill's Prescription Diet Logo

The food your dog eats plays an important role in his or her overall health and well-being. As dogs age, they require different levels of nutrients to reduce excesses that could be harmful to their system. Factors such as age or weight may affect heart function leading to lifestyle and mood changes.

Kidneys remove waste substances from the blood and maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. Once kidney damage occurs, the consequences are usually irreversible. Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians developed nutrition to support your older dog's kidneys and heart for overall health. Hill's Prescription Diet g/d Canine is a complete and balanced food that provides all the nutrition dogs need.

This specialized canned food focuses on preserving the well-being of aging canines by addressing concerns related to kidney and heart function.

  • A Comprehensive Approach:This complete and balanced food is formulated with controlled levels of protein and minerals to safeguard vital kidney function. • Optimal Balance for Vital Heart and Kidney Function:One of the key highlights of Hill's Prescription Diet g/d is its optimal balance of protein, sodium, and minerals. This combination serves to protect not only the kidneys but also supports the heart's essential functions. • Addressing Dietary Fat Sensitivities:This canned food provides complete nutrition with lower fat content for dogs with sensitivity to dietary fat. The controlled dietary fat ensures that aging dogs enjoy a flavorful meal without compromising their digestive health.

  • Irresistible Turkey Flavor with S+OXSHIELD Technology:Besides its health-focused attributes, Hill's Prescription Diet g/d boasts an irresistible turkey flavor. The ground texture of the canned food adds a delightful dining experience for your aging canine companion. Moreover, S+OXSHIELD technology helps prevent the formation of struvite and calcium oxalate crystals in the urinary tract, further contributing to urinary health.

What Is GD Dog Food?
Answer

GD dog food stands for "Grain-Free and Dry." It refers to dog food formulations without grains. These diets typically consist of dry kibble made from alternative sources of carbohydrates. Grain-free options often utilize ingredients like peas, lentils, or potatoes instead of traditional grains like wheat or corn. Many pet owners opt for grain-free diets, believing they better mimic a dog's ancestral diet. However, it's essential to choose high-quality GD dog food to ensure proper nutrition for your pet.

What Are the Benefits of Prescription Dog Food?
Answer

Prescription dog food offers tailored nutrition for specific health conditions. It helps manage issues like weight, urinary tract problems, and digestive disorders. These diets are formulated with carefully selected ingredients to support optimal health. Prescription dog food undergoes rigorous testing to ensure safety and effectiveness. It can significantly improve a dog's overall well-being.

What Are the Side Effects of Hillโ€™s Dog Food?
Answer

Side effects of Hill's dog food may include gastrointestinal upset like vomiting and diarrhea. Some dogs may experience allergic reactions, leading to skin issues such as itching and rashes. In rare cases, severe symptoms like lethargy or difficulty breathing may occur. It's crucial to consult a veterinarian if any concerning side effects arise. They can guide on appropriate dietary choices and potential alternatives.

How Long Can a Dog Be on Hillโ€™s Prescription Diet?
Answer

Dogs can be on Hill's Prescription Diet for various lengths of time. Veterinarians prescribe it for specific medical conditions. The duration depends on the dog's health needs and treatment plan. In some cases, dogs may need to remain on the Prescription Diet long-term to manage chronic conditions. However, for acute issues, dogs may only require it temporarily until their health improves. It's essential to follow your veterinarian's guidance regarding the duration of the Prescription Diet for your dog. Regular check-ups with the vet can help monitor your dog's progress and determine if adjustments to the diet are necessary.

Is It Okay to Give My Dog Canned Food Daily?
Answer

Feeding your dog canned food every day is generally fine. However, it's crucial to choose high-quality options. Look for varieties that provide balanced nutrition and meet your dog's dietary needs. Canned food can offer variety and moisture, which may benefit your dog's overall health. Nevertheless, it's essential to avoid overfeeding and monitor your dog's weight and digestion. Some dogs may develop sensitivities or allergies to certain ingredients in canned food, so it's essential to observe any adverse reactions.

Why Do Veterinarians Recommend Hillโ€™s Science Diet?
Answer

According to George Kurie, with 12 years of experience raising service dogs, veterinarians recommend Hill's Science Diet among other brands. These recommendations can be influenced by the brands sold in veterinary practices. While there's no universally top-ranked dog food, various sources provide lists of recommended options, though they may not always agree. Kurie suggests mixing different dry kibble varieties for taste, crunchiness, and nutrient balance. Introducing variety in the diet by rotating among "best" medium-range varieties and adding canned food for flavor and moisture is beneficial. He emphasizes not fixating on one brand unless medically necessary. Variety in a dog's diet is crucial for a fulfilling and healthy life, as he's witnessed with his dogs. https://www.quora.com/Why-do-veterinarians-recommend-Hills-Science-Diet

Should Dogs Eat Canned Dog Food?
Answer

According to Mark South, D.V.M. from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, canned dog food is suitable for dogs. He suggests a combination of canned and dry food for a balanced diet. Many reputable dog food companies invest in research to ensure their diets are complete and nutritious. South advises against grain-free and raw food diets for dogs. Grain-free diets may lead to potential heart disease due to taurine deficiency. On the other hand, raw diets pose risks of bacterial poisoning for both humans and dogs. If considering homemade meals, South recommends visiting petdiets.com for nutritionally balanced recipes. However, he acknowledges it can be cumbersome and suggests sticking to trusted commercial dog food brands. If considering a change in diet, especially for health concerns, South recommends consulting with a veterinarian beforehand. https://www.quora.com/Should-dogs-eat-canned-dog-food

Should You Feed Your Pet Prescription Dog Food?
Answer

Dr. Jennifer Coates, a seasoned veterinarian, advises that prescription dog food is designed specifically to address various health conditions and necessitates approval from a veterinarian. These specialized diets target issues such as weight management, bladder stones, kidney disease, food sensitivities, GI problems, and arthritis. They undergo thorough testing to ensure both effectiveness and safety. While transitioning to prescription food should typically be done gradually, certain situations may call for a more rapid change. Ultimately, prescription diets have the potential to significantly enhance a dog's health and could potentially reduce reliance on other treatments. Dr. Coates emphasizes the importance of consulting with a veterinarian to ascertain whether prescription dog food is appropriate for a pet's specific needs. https://www.petmd.com/dog/nutrition/prescription-dog-food

T
Formula has changed!

My 11 year old Yorkshire Terrier was put on this food because he was beginning to show signs of diminished kidney function. At first he hated it. He doesn't like paté style foods so it took us a while to convince him to eat it. He finally ate it one day and LOVED IT!! However, when we ran out a month ago we were greeted with the dreaded "SUPPLY CHAIN" hold up on food production. Some ingredients weren't available at the time but we were assured by Hill's that it was "working on it". Guess what? When it finally arrived, the formula is *completely * different. My dog HATES IT. It no longer smells meaty or stewy. It smells like corn, cornstarch, corn husks. It's gelatinous and gritty and pinkish grey in color. It dries to a crumbly consistency and dries out so quickly. And *please* Hill's, don't insult my intelligence and that of my dog. IT.IS.DIFFERENT. Now I have to work with my vet to find a new food that meets his nutritional needs as a diabetic dog with Cushing's.

Messy!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Our get has placed our 15 year old dog on this food but she will not leave it on the bowl. She carries it out of her bowl and it gets all over the floor and is like glue. Very hard to clean up. If it was more like a stew then it would not leave the bowl. It is too dry

O
Product formula has changed

The G/D canned is now a higher percentage of water than previously. More watery than preferred. Also with the new formula, when opening the can, large flecks of white fat are found, I've been trying to remove them as I want minimal fat in my dogs diet anyway. If that fat needs to be part of the formula, it needs to be better distributed throughout the product.

M
Science Diet g/d canine canned food

We needed to find a way to get our 4 year old Maltipoo to take in more water. By feeding the canned food in the morning, we can add 1/3 cup of water, which she'll drink to get to the food! Although she's not an 'aging dog' she does have issues with crystallization and stones forming -she's had to have 2 surgeries already, which is too much for a 6 pound pup! The only thing I wish is that there were more consistency -each can seems to be different and the texture is 'weird'. Having never used wet food before, I guess I thought it would be more like what I've seen advertised on TV! BUT Murphy likes it, and bottom line, that's all that matters. I do feel that it's rather costly, but as long as I can find coupons to help offset the expense, I'll be OK with it!

my dog loves this food

My dog is 15 yrs old and just had his gall bladder removed. His recovery was slow and he wouldn't eat. My vet recommended g/d and he started eating and is back to acting like he's 7 again.

F
Awesome product, and he loves it too !!

Our 12 y/o Yorkie (Codi) has been on Prescription Diet G/D as prescribed by our Veterinarian for years. He absolutely loves his food, and I feel that it has helped keep him on track for a healthy life into his senior years. Our other Yorkie (Frisco), was on a Prescription Diet I/D, and I strongly feel that this did contribute to his long lifespan of 17 years. I do feel that the food is expensive, and does take a chunk out of our household budget, but what price do you put on the head of your family pet.....ours is priceless

For My Schnauzer

This products is just the right amount of protein and low fat for a schnauzer. They don't need a high protein high fat diet like some other breeds.
