Are Hillโ€™s treats good for dogs?
Answer

Hill's is a reputable brand known for its high-quality pet products, including treats such as Hill's Prescription Diet Dog Treats. While Hill's treats can be a tasty and nutritious addition to your dog's diet, it's essential to use them in moderation. These treats often contain higher calorie content compared to regular dog food, so overindulging can lead to weight gain and other health issues. A balanced approach is key. Limiting treats to one per day and breaking them into smaller pieces for training or rewards can help control calorie intake. Amy Flowers, a DVM from the University of Georgia, says that pets shouldnโ€™t get more than 10% of their daily calories from treats. Additionally, incorporating Hill's treats as part of a well-rounded diet ensures your dog receives adequate nutrition without excess calories. It is critical to monitor your dog's weight and modify the intake accordingly. If you notice your dog becoming overweight, it may be necessary to reduce the number of treats given or opt for lower-calorie alternatives. Overall, when used responsibly, Hill's treats can be a beneficial addition to your dog's diet, providing both enjoyment and nutrition in moderation.Reference:https://www.webmd.com/pets/pet-treats

What are dog treats made of?
Answer

Dog treats can vary widely in composition, but they typically contain a combination of meat or meat-derived materials along with other ingredients. Common components include various types of meats such as chicken, beef, lamb, or fish, which are often processed into forms like ground meat, meal, or by-products. These meat ingredients provide protein, flavor, and essential nutrients for dogs. In addition to meat, dog treats often contain fillers and binders such as potato starch, cereal flour (like wheat or rice), and vegetable proteins. These ingredients help give treats their texture and structure. Fats and oils are often added for palatability and to provide necessary dietary fat. Many treats also include fruits and vegetables, which can contribute additional vitamins, minerals, and fiber to the dog's diet. Common fruits and vegetables found in treats include apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, and peas. Jerky products, a specific type of treat, consist primarily of dried and flavored meats or animal by-products like pig skin. They offer a chewy texture and intense flavor without the need for added fillers or binders. Some treats may also contain additives such as preservatives, flavorings, or colors to enhance taste, appearance, or shelf-life. Pet owners who want to avoid additives and preservatives can consider natural alternatives to dog treats. Brittany Kleszynski, a DVM, says that green beans, carrots, blueberries, and bananas are some good natural alternatives to dog treats when fed in moderation.Reference:https://www.petmd.com/dog/nutrition/are-treats-good-for-dogs

How do you make a good dog treat?
Answer

To craft a delectable homemade dog treat, blend equal portions of peanut butter and pumpkin puree until smooth. Gradually incorporate flour until a pliable dough forms. Roll the dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch and cut it into appropriately sized pieces for your furry friend. Bake the treats at 350ยฐF until they achieve a crisp, golden-brown exterior, typically around 15 minutes. This simple recipe offers a nutritious combination of protein from peanut butter and fiber from pumpkin. Joan Vanderburg, owner of two dogs, shares another healthy pet recipe. Over the course of several years, she has developed a routine of purchasing chicken hearts, gizzards, and turkey. These ingredients are boiled and then cut into halves or smaller pieces before being frozen. Typically, she freezes the majority of the portions and only keeps out what she estimates she will use within a day. Occasionally, when she runs out of these specific ingredients, she resorts to alternatives such as expensive cheese or leftover salmon. Joan also opts for utility turkeys, finding them to be both cheaper and equally satisfactory. She oven-bakes them, as well as stewing hens for soup-making purposes. Ensuring any bones in the meats are removed, she separates them, bags them, and then freezes the meat. These bone-free meats are often used as treats for her pets. Additionally, she utilizes the carcasses to make additional broth, repeating the process of freezing and storing it for future use in her pets' meals.Reference:https://www.quora.com/Should-dog-treats-be-made-at-home-or-bought

Are dog treats safe?
Answer

Dog treats can be safe when given in moderation and chosen carefully. While they can contain essential nutrients and serve as rewards for good behavior or training, they shouldn't replace a balanced diet. Dogs need a nutritionally complete diet as their primary source of nutrients, so treats should only supplement this diet. It's crucial to select treats that are specifically made for dogs and are of high quality. Look for treats that are made from wholesome ingredients and free from harmful additives or preservatives. Avoid giving your dog human snacks and junk food. These can be high in calories, sugars, and fats, which can lead to obesity and other health issues in dogs. Overfeeding treats can also lead to weight gain and nutritional imbalances, so it's essential to practice moderation. Treats should only make up a small portion of your dog's daily caloric intake. Consulting with a veterinarian can help you determine the appropriate amount of treats to give based on your dog's size, age, and activity level.

Can puppies eat treats?
Answer

Yes, puppies can eat treats, but it's crucial to choose treats specifically designed for puppies or those suitable for their age and size. Around 8 weeks old, puppies can start enjoying treats as part of their training and bonding experience with you. However, it's essential to be cautious about the ingredients in the treats you offer. When selecting treats for your puppy, opt for simple, high-quality options with minimal ingredients. Treats with just one or a few ingredients are ideal. They are less likely to cause digestive upset or allergic reactions in sensitive puppies. Look for treats made from wholesome ingredients like lean meats (such as chicken or turkey), vegetables, or grains. Introduce treats gradually into your puppy's diet, offering small portions to avoid overwhelming their digestive system.

Too large for small dog

My 6 pound dog is on a low fat diet. This treat is too large and I have to cut it up into 8 pieces. Hills does not offer any other low fat treat choices. Reading the reviews from 5-8 years ago, this treat has been too large for a very long time. When is Hills going to do something about changing the size to accommodate smaller dogs?

OUT OF STOCK Nationwide

We are VERY disappointed that Hills has not been able to ship these to any nationwide retailer. VERY sad because our dog has gastrointestinal problems and requires a low fat treat and this was the best treat available. To not have this option is very disappointing! We are very sad! Please fix this and start producting this treat again and supplying it to the retailers!

My small dog loves these treats!

My morkie loves these treats. I use kitchen scissors to cut into small pieces for him. He's older with stomach issues and this has been our go to treat. Sadly we haven't been able to find them for 2 months. Hoping they aren't discounted.

M
Great treat. dog loves it

Most of the low reviews are because the treats are too large for small dogs. I do not find this to be a problem. I use a scissors, and they cut easily. I cut about a third of the bag at a time, put them into a cookie jar and they work just fine on my small dogs. I dont waste the crumbs and give them that too. The dogs love the treats. I just wish they were a bit less expensive.

Dog likes it very much

My dog gets his treat after his insulin injection. I just say time for your medicine and he runs and sits down, knowing he will get his treat following his meds. If I don't give it to him right a way he will bark until he gets it. It has made medicine time so much more of a good time. I know it is a healthy treat, which makes me feel better also.

P
Great product.

The size is somewhat of a problem, because her doctor said she could only have one a day. I have overcome the problem by using trimming nippers, the kind you use to cut flowers or trim trees or bushes. I can cut the treats into 6 pieces, so I can give her a treat 6 times during the day. It works great. I do wish they were a little cheaper, and that they had different flavors to choose from, just for a variety; but this is working fine.

Treats are too large for my small dog!

My vet has recommended Hills Prescription Diet food and treats for my small 17 lb dog. I am extremely disappointed that you only manufacture one size treat that is way too large for my dog. In fact, she will swallow the treat bone whole and will not take the time to chew on it. The result is that in order to adhere to her prescription diet, I take a kitchen mallet or hammer to break eat treat bone in to approximately 5 smaller pieces. Since I am 63 and she is only 3, I could be spending a long number of years banging treat bones to smaller pieces! Please consider a smaller size version of this product in the future!!!

Inconsistent In Terms of Manufacturing, but good

My dog loves these treats, which is good since she isn't allowed any other kind because of her urinary issues. The only thing weird about them is that the manufacturing seems inconsistent. I have a small dog, so I have to break them up. Sometimes I get treats in the bag that are way thicker than normal and they are difficult to break apart. In the latest bag, I got one that was far thinner than the rest, too. I'm sure the quality is fine, but it seems weird that they aren't uniform in size.

Our dog loves Prescription Diet treats.

Our poor dog, Juno, has always had digestive issues. He can only eat ZD wet and dry food. He could never be rewarded with regular treats. We were so happy to find the Prescription Diet Treats. We use them as a reward for tricks and just being a good dog. Juno really gets excited when he sees us take out a treat. He must really love the flavor. Thanks Prescription Diet for making such a great product!

Absolutely love it.

This product is a good treat at night for my dog, stops his cravings and keeps him satisfy until the morning feed. Vet recommended because of his teeth cavities, so when he chews on the treats his teeth get clean.

A bit too big for small dogs

My Penney, a 16 pound Bichon rescue, loves these and they are helping to keep her strictly on her cd diet. These treats are a bit too big for a small dog like her. She is a certified therapy dog and she gets treats during and after her work. I try to break these into smaller pieces, but it is hard to do and they still are not small enough. I would love to see these in a small dog size.

D
K/D treats are a hit for dog with few teeth and nutritional

Due to the advanced age of our pet (15 years), his kidneys do not work as efficiently as they once did. Our vet switched him to K/D canned food which worked miracles in getting his body chemistry balanced. I noticed that Hills made dog biscuits that complimented the K/D line, but really worried that my pet could eat them as he had had several teeth removed due to decay. Not only could he crunch them up in no time, he LOVED them - no minor fact as he is one fussy eater! Besides being gentle on his digestive tract, I love that the crunchy biscuits help keep his teeth clean and that he enjoys them so much! Although a bit higher price, the benefits of providing my pet with these treats - knowing the health advantages - make this an affordable way to keep "Eddie" in "Good boy treats" while maintaining his health!
