Health Benefits of Hills Prescription Diet d/d

Allergic reactions in cats, caused by food, are some of the most common types of allergies across all feline breeds. Hills Prescription Diet Skin Food Sensitivities cat food was designed for cats who suffer from food/skin-related problems, and features a balanced, thoughtfully designed nutritional profile that can help alleviate/resolve your cats allergy-related problems.

One of the primary reasons why Hills Prescription Diet dry cat food (d/d formula) is a good option for cats with food sensitivities, is because it contains minimal ingredients (all of which are high quality). Venison and pea protein are the two main protein sources, making this recipe a good source of protein for your little carnivore.

In addition to its rich sources of protein, Hill's Prescription Diet dry cat food (for skin sensitivities) provides your cat with all of the necessary micronutrients, minerals, and vitamins needed to maintain (and enhance) its overall health.

Is Hills Prescription Diet Safe?

Hill's Prescription Diet cat food offers science-based therapeutic nutrition for cats. Medicated cat food is often a veterinarian's suggestion based on your cat's condition. Since it is being prescribed by a professional, it's safe to consume for your pet.

The Hill's Science Diet prescription cat food is also suitable for cats that have a sensitive stomach. Additionally, the prescription diet for cats is for specific health conditions or specialized nutritional needs. Some health issues that may call for vet food for cats include urinary health, weight management, kidney support, digestive care, and allergy care.

Does Hill's Prescription Diet Work?

Hills Diet Prescription cat food targets specific health conditions and unique needs in mind. To that extent, the Hills Prescription Diet cat line of food is effective against the particular health issues they target. These issues include diabetes, IDB, hyperthyroidism, and urinary tract health.

However, since the Hills Prescription cat food corrects specific conditions, they don't have all the essential nutrients required by your feline friend. It's best to take the vet's advice to supplement the medical cat food with other foods to provide a balanced diet.

What is the Difference between Hill's Prescription Diet and Science Diet?

While Hill's Prescription Diet and Science Diet are medicated pet foods, they are pretty different from each other. The former targets some specific medical conditions, whereas the Hill's Science Diet is a veterinary cat food designed to meet the health needs of cats during various stages of life.

Another difference between the two is that you can only purchase Hill's Prescription diet through a practicing veterinarian. On the contrary, Hills Diet cat food is available through bets, pet specialty stores, feed stores, and other places.

There's a marketing agreement between the manufacturer and the veterinarian community to sell Hill's Prescription cat food. This agreement allows the sale of Prescription Diet food through a vet only. Therefore, while you don't need a prescription for the Hills Diet cat food, you can usually buy it only from a vet.

Can Hill's Prescription Diet Be Given to Lactating Nursing Females?

Your vet may recommend Hill's Prescription Diet for lactating nursing females if the cat needs a specialized diet to address a specific health issue. However, Hill's Prescription Diet food is a specialized food targeted for particular problems and shouldn't just be fed to a lactating nursing female cat.

For such cats, Hill's recommends their Science Diet Kitten Healthy Development Chicken Recipe dry cat food. The food is ideal for kittens up to 1 year of age and pregnant or nursing cats.

Is Hill's Prescription Diet Good For Cats?

Hill's Prescription Diet is science-based therapeutic nutrition for cats, according to the brand's official website. The food is intended to address either specific health conditions or specialized nutritional needs, especially for aging cats.

Therefore, if your cat is showing conditions like urinary issues, weight gain or loss, kidney troubles, digestive anomalies, and allergies, it's best to consult a vet and start a Hills Diet cat food regimen for your pet.

Can Hills Prescription Diet Cause Diarrhea?

Hills Prescription Diet is meant to provide nutritional management in cats with a food allergy, intolerance, and other issues. If the Hills Prescription Diet food you are feeding causes an imbalance in the nutritional values, it's normal for your dog to experience slight vomiting and diarrhea.

It's an absolute must for any dog owner looking into Hill's cat food to talk to a vet first and sort out the proper diet for balanced nutrition for their cat.

Does Hill's Prescription Diet Cause Any Problems?

Not all Hill's Prescription Diet foods are created the same, and they might have different side effects on other cats. Most common Hill's Prescription Diet side effects may include vomiting, diarrhea, loose stools, laziness, and more. These are not critical and can be easily rectified by consulting an experienced veterinarian.

Can I Feed All My Cats Hills Prescriptions D Food?

No, the Hills Prescriptions D Food is a unique food designed to control the most common allergies in cats. It's meant for cats that suffer from food or skin-related problems. Therefore, unless all your cats have allergies, it's not recommended to feed them this particular food.

What is the problem with dry food for cats?
Answer

Dry food for cats can have a few potential issues. Cats have a low thirst drive, and they naturally obtain most of their water intake from their prey. Dry cat food has a low moisture content, which can lead to dehydration if cats don't drink enough water. This can contribute to urinary tract issues and other health problems. Ensure fresh water is available at all times, and consider providing wet cat food alongside or instead of dry food. You can also encourage water consumption by using fountains or adding water to dry food to make it more moist. Dry cat food tends to be calorie-dense and may contain more carbohydrates than necessary for a cat's diet. Free-feeding dry food can lead to overeating and weight gain, increasing the risk of obesity-related health issues. Measure out appropriate portions of dry food and establish scheduled feeding times. This helps prevent overeating and allows for better weight management. Additionally, consider incorporating wet food into your cat's diet, as it typically has a higher moisture content and lower calorie density. While it's commonly believed that dry cat food helps clean a cat's teeth, the abrasive action is minimal. Cats primarily swallow their kibble whole, which means it doesn't provide thorough dental cleaning. Proper dental care usually requires regular brushing or other dental hygiene measures. Incorporate regular dental care into your cat's routine. This can include brushing their teeth with a cat-specific toothbrush and toothpaste, providing dental treats or chews recommended by your vet, or scheduling professional dental cleanings as needed.

What are the side effects of hydrolyzed protein cat food?
Answer

Hydrolyzed protein cat food is often prescribed or recommended for cats with food allergies or sensitivities. It undergoes a process called hydrolyzation, where the proteins are broken down into smaller components, reducing their allergenic potential. While hydrolyzed protein cat food can be beneficial for cats with specific dietary needs, there are some potential side effects to consider. Hydrolyzed protein cat food can have a different taste and smell compared to regular cat food. Some cats may find it less appealing, which can lead to decreased appetite and reluctance to eat. In some cases, cats may experience gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, vomiting, or flatulence when transitioning to or consuming hydrolyzed protein cat food. This can be due to a change in diet or individual sensitivities. Hydrolyzed protein cat food is formulated to be nutritionally balanced, but it's important to ensure that your cat's specific nutritional needs are met. Regular monitoring and potential supplementation of certain nutrients may be necessary to prevent any deficiencies.

What can I feed my cat with skin problems?
Answer

If your cat is experiencing skin problems, consult with a veterinarian to determine the underlying cause and develop an appropriate treatment plan. The specific diet recommendations for cats with skin problems will depend on the diagnosis and individual needs of your cat. Cats with skin problems often benefit from hypoallergenic or limited-ingredient diets. These diets typically feature novel protein sources (such as venison, rabbit, or duck) and limited ingredients to minimize the risk of triggering allergic reactions. Some cats with skin issues may benefit from a grain-free diet. Grain-free options eliminate common allergenic grains like wheat, corn, and soy, which can contribute to skin inflammation in sensitive individuals. Omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in fish oil supplements, can have anti-inflammatory properties and support healthy skin and coats. Your veterinarian may recommend specific omega-3 fatty acid supplements or foods rich in these nutrients. Increasing your cat's overall moisture intake can be beneficial for its skin health. Consider incorporating wet or canned cat food into their diet, as it has a higher moisture content compared to dry kibble. In certain cases, your veterinarian may recommend prescription diets specifically formulated to address skin issues. These diets often contain specific ingredients and nutrients designed to support skin health and manage underlying conditions.

What cat proteins cause allergies?
Answer

Cats can develop allergies to various proteins, but some proteins are more commonly associated with allergic reactions in cats. Chicken is a common allergen for cats. Allergies to chicken protein can manifest as skin irritations, gastrointestinal issues, or respiratory symptoms. Beef is another protein source that can trigger allergies in some cats. It can lead to symptoms such as itching, scratching, digestive problems, or respiratory issues. Although fish is often used in cat food, some cats may develop allergies to fish proteins. Allergic reactions to fish can cause skin problems, gastrointestinal disturbances, or even asthma-like symptoms. Cats are typically lactose intolerant, and consuming dairy products can result in gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea and vomiting. While not as common as chicken or beef, some cats can develop allergies to lamb. Allergies to lamb protein can lead to skin problems, gastrointestinal issues, or respiratory symptoms. Soy is a plant-based protein source that can cause allergies in cats. It may contribute to skin irritations, digestive problems, or other allergic reactions.

Even though I fed my cat hypoallergenic food he still scratched way too much. I ordered the DD and witching about 3 days the scratching stopped and his coat is even prettier than it was

They ruined it! After 11 years my cat will no longer eat it.

They switched pork fat to coconut oil and ruined it. Cat won't eat after 11 years of loving it. I have spent $10,000 dollars and this food over the years for one cat, and now I am back to square one.

I loved this until they changed the formula.

My kitty has both food allergies and was forming crystals in his urinary tract. My Vet told me he needed a novel protein for tummy issues but also the S/O index for urinary tract. This product was a lifesaver until they recently changed the formula and removed the S/O index. Now I'm struggling to find another brand of food for my sweet boy. Unfortunately, Hill's has lost a customer. ??

Not sure why it is expensive

Not sure why it is so expensive compare to other food which has better ingredients (eg. grain free). This one has such low percentage of protein (27% written on the bag, not 34% they claim on webite).

Hard little nuggets
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My cat threw this food up, and every nugget was perfectly intact. I don't think the poor kitty was able to chew them. They are hard as little rocks. The other thing that didn't impress me is that the first two ingredients are peas and pea protein. This is pretty pricey stuff. I don't mind spending the money for kitty's health, but shouldn't venison be the first ingredient? Not impressed and sorry I wasted my money on this. On the plus side, kitty loves the taste.

Life Saver
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My vet recommended this product (and the wet version of this product) to me when we found out she has malabsorption issues. Coco was losing weight rapidly and having constant diarrhea while eating commercial cat food. As soon as we switched to Hills, the diarrhea stopped entirely (not one incident in months) and she's gained over 30% of her body weight back (in conjunction with a steroid). Hills is truly a life saver, and at the very least has added precious time onto Coco's life that I get to spend with her. She loves the food, is satisfied after eating it, and has gotten healthy while getting happy. THANK YOU to Hills!!!

The BEST for my cats!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

I have 2 cats, 1 of which the vet decided after a visit, had face and chin issues and recommended the D/D. Altho pricey, I purchased and her problem cleared up. When I ran out and couldn't get to vet's office, I purchased small bag of otc at store and lo and behold she developed the issues again. D/D is the only food she can eat that keeps her little face clear of those nasty sores and her sister eats it without complaint. The coupons Hill's offers is greatly appreciated.

All 3 of my kitties LOVE this dry food!!!

Although Hill's Prescription Diet d/d Dry Feline Formula is prescribed, all 3 of my kitties LOVE the Duck & Green Pea Formula. Two of them are 16 year old brothers & the other is a 4 year old little girl. They also like the canned wet in the same flavor & the Venison. It's important to me to be able to have a HEALTHY food that not only is safe but they really enjoy eating. Thank you so very much!

What a change this made for this kitty!

Recommended to an owner with a kitty for chronic diarrhea and vomiting. Worked perfectly! The owner decided to try a different food (otc novel protein) and within weeks back to the same issues; vomiting, diarrhea, and now also urinary issues. Returned to Hill's Rx D/D Duck and Green Pea and wow, back to normal again. This little kitty is happy and healthy again!

Tried but no luck

I have heard a lot of people complain that their cats would not eat the D/d. I did not think anything of it until a vet prescribed it for my own cat (who eats anything). I tried the venison first and the cat wouldn't even go near the food bowl with it in there. After a few days of him not eating I switched it out for the Duck. Still no luck. I had to put him back on his normal food. It is way too expensive and not at all palatable.

P
really made a difference

My cat was scratching all the time and actually made wounds and open sores. After a few weeks of the Duck/Pea food he was back to normal. I mistakenly assumed I could re-introduce a store bought food, and he immediately went back to scratching and itching. We are now on the Duck/Pea for life. Nothing else would be worth it. He is happy and health. Thank you.

This is a high quality product that has kept our cat from

Our cat had extreme digestive problems being on another cat food brand for years. Our vet recommended the D/D duck and green pea, and she immediately returned to normal health. While it does cost more than most cat foods, we appreciate the fact that our cat has a better quality of life. The periodic coupons help with the cost! Thank you!

B
The product seems to be doing what I hoped it would do.

One male cat has had issues with blood in stool, and we have tried several of your Prescription Diets. One vet school recommended any food that was wild in nature since cats are feral by nature, so that's how we got to venison/green pea. My cats don't rush to their dishes for the wet food, but the dry food seems to appeal to them more. They drink more water with this food. However, the stool is formed with this food and only occasionally is there a trace of blood. Wish there were more flavors to choose from. I am transitioning the wet duck flavor in with the venison which seems to be more palatable. Regular Hills Diet prices are high as cat foods go, but the cost is even steeper for Prescription Diet when budgets are tight.

Overall a great product

My cats ( 2) have been on D/D dry for about 3 years. I also fostered a cat this summer and she had no GI issues switching to a higher quality food. She readily accepted the new diet and I could really see the change in her appearance. Her coat and skin were less dry, she gained much needed weight without getting too overweight. My own cats don't seem to be bothered by static in their coats during the dry winters. With 2 cats the cost per day is pretty minimal and the 8.5# bag last me about 1 month. I know several pet owners who use the D/D diet and have been very happy with the product. Best part of a high quality diet is that the stools are small and no odor!!

Palatable, quality nutrition your picky eaters will love

We have 2 cats that needed to switch to a prescription diet for various reasons. Both of these boys are picky eaters, but they love their d/d Venison & Green Pea, which made the switch so much easier. It's hard to help treat your pet's medical condition with prescription food if they won't eat it, which defeats the whole purpose. Therefore, we couldn't be happier with our boys' response! Thank you Hill's for making a prescription food that our cats enjoy and we can feel good about feeding them!

This product has worked well for our 16 year old cat!

This has proved to be the best food we have had an opportunity to provide our 16 year old cat! He liked it quickly. He was eating only this food after only two days of mixing with prior dry food. The results have been positive and greatly appreciated by both our cat and us. We provide him with plenty of water and he is one very happy cat we feel prior negative issues have disappeared.
