Diphenhydramine, commonly known as Benadryl, is an antihistamine medication used in veterinary medicine to address various conditions in pets. While it's primarily designed for human use, veterinarians may prescribe it for animals in certain situations, although it's considered an off-label use in veterinary practice.

Medical Uses

  • Antihistamine Properties:Diphenhydramine effectively manages allergic reactions in pets, including itching, hives, and swelling caused by insect bites, environmental allergens, or food allergies.

  • Motion Sickness:It can also alleviate motion sickness symptoms in pets, particularly during car rides or air travel.

  • Vomiting:In some cases, veterinarians may prescribe diphenhydramine to help control vomiting in pets.

  • Adjunct Therapy for Mast Cell Tumors:Diphenhydramine is sometimes used as adjunctive therapy for mast cell tumors due to its ability to block histamine release.

Administration and Formulations

Diphenhydramine for pets is typically administered orally, either in tablet or liquid form. In certain emergency situations or for specific medical procedures, it may be administered via injection under veterinary supervision.

Side Effects and Risks

While generally considered safe when used appropriately, diphenhydramine can cause side effects in pets. Common side effects include lethargy, dry mouth, and urinary retention. Excitement or agitation may occur in some animals, particularly at higher doses.

Certain pets may be at higher risk of adverse reactions, including those with glaucoma, prostate enlargement, or sensitivity to antihistamines. Veterinarians need to consider these risk factors before prescribing diphenhydramine.

Drug Interactions and Monitoring

Diphenhydramine may interact with other medications, so veterinarians must be aware of any concurrent medications a pet may be taking. Monitoring for signs of adverse reactions or interactions is essential, especially when initiating treatment or adjusting dosage.

Storage and Emergency Situations

Diphenhydramine should be stored securely out of reach of pets and children, as overdose can lead to serious complications. In case of an overdose or adverse reaction, immediate veterinary attention is necessary. Pet owners should have access to emergency veterinary services and contact information readily available.

Diphenhydramine is the Generic Alternative to Benadryl.

I can't believe how much our vet had ripped us off till I checked your web site

Our vet had charged us $28.00 for 100 of these.Your price was $0.06 cents each =$6.00 and we had a credit of earned points of $5.75 basically we only paid a few dollars for the shipping. Please keep up this good pricing policy.
