There are few different treatment options available for hyperthyroidism. However, if your veterinarian chooses medication, it is important for you to know how this medication works and how it can help your cat's symptoms. Learn more here.

Hyperthyroidism, also know as thyrotoxicosis, occurs when a cat’s thyroid produces excessive amounts of the T3 and T4 thyroid hormones. The condition typically strikes middle-aged or older cats, between the ages of 8 and 13 years, and is often caused by tumors on the thyroid.

The thyroid hormones affect many organ functions and play an important role in regulating metabolism. Hyperthyroidism, therefore, can really wreak havoc on a cat’s overall health.

Fortunately, there are three different treatment options available for cats suffering with hyperthyroidism. These options include surgery, radioactive-iodine therapy, and medication. Your veterinarian will determine which one is right for your cat based on the type of tumor on the thyroid and your cat’s general health.

Methimazole is the most commonly prescribed medication for hyperthyroidism in cats. It is an anti-thyroid medication that comes in tablet form.
