Answer

Corn starch is listed as one of the ingredients in the formula. The main feature of Royal Canin Ultamino is its limited ingredient list, with the goal of minimizing potential allergens and irritants for dogs with severe food sensitivities or allergies. However, it is not completely grain-free.

Is Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein the same as Ultamino?
Answer

No, Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein and Ultamino are not the same. While both are veterinary diets offered by Royal Canin, they have different formulations and purposes. Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein is designed for dogs with food sensitivities or allergies. It features a hydrolyzed protein source, where the protein molecules are broken down into smaller fragments, making them less likely to trigger an immune response. This hydrolyzed protein formula helps to minimize the risk of allergic reactions in dogs with food allergies or sensitivities. On the other hand, Ultamino is also a veterinary diet offered by Royal Canin, but it is specifically formulated for dogs with severe food sensitivities or allergies. Ultamino has an even more limited ingredient list compared to Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein, with the aim of reducing potential allergens and irritants. Ultamino uses a specific combination of amino acids as its protein source, which are highly digestible and less likely to cause allergic reactions.

Is Ultamino high in fiber?
Answer

Ultamino, the veterinary diet offered by Royal Canin, is not specifically marketed as being high in fiber. Its primary focus is on providing a limited-ingredient diet for dogs with severe food sensitivities or allergies. Ultamino has a maximum crude fiber content of 5.6%. A crude fiber content of 5.6% can be considered moderate in terms of fiber content for dog food. It is not exceptionally high in fiber, but it is not low either. Moderate levels of fiber can have various benefits for dogs, including supporting healthy digestion and bowel movements.

What are the side effects of hydrolyzed protein?
Answer

Hydrolyzed protein diets, such as Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein, are typically recommended for dogs with food sensitivities or allergies. These diets use protein sources that have been broken down into smaller fragments, reducing their potential to trigger an immune response and adverse reactions. However, like any dietary intervention, there can be potential side effects. Some dogs may experience gastrointestinal issues, such as diarrhea, vomiting, or increased flatulence, when transitioning to a hydrolyzed protein diet. This is usually a temporary adjustment period as their system adapts to the new food. Hydrolyzed protein diets can have a different taste and smell compared to regular diets, which may affect palatability. Some dogs may be less enthusiastic about the taste of these specialized diets, potentially leading to decreased appetite or reluctance to eat. As hydrolyzed protein diets are formulated with limited ingredients, it's crucial to ensure that the necessary nutrients are still provided in adequate amounts. If the diet is not properly balanced or if the dog has long-term exclusions from certain food groups, there is a potential risk of nutrient deficiencies. Regular monitoring and supplementation, if needed, can help address this.

Is hydrolyzed or whey protein better?
Answer

Whether hydrolyzed protein or whey protein is better depends on the specific context and individual needs. Hydrolyzed protein is commonly used in hypoallergenic or elimination diets for dogs with food sensitivities or allergies. The protein is broken down into smaller peptides, reducing its allergenic potential and minimizing the likelihood of triggering an immune response. Whey protein is a complete protein source that contains all essential amino acids. It is often used in various dietary supplements, muscle recovery products, and situations where a high-quality protein source is needed. Hydrolyzed protein is highly digestible because it has been enzymatically broken down into smaller peptides. This can be beneficial for dogs with sensitive digestive systems. Whey protein is also highly digestible and is known for its rapid absorption by the body. Hydrolyzed protein has minimal allergenic potential since the protein molecules are extensively broken down into smaller fragments. This makes it less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Whey protein, particularly from cow's milk, can be a common allergen for some dogs. It may trigger allergic reactions or intolerances in dogs with specific sensitivities or allergies to dairy proteins. Ultimately, the choice between hydrolyzed protein and whey protein depends on the intended use and the specific needs of the dog. If you are addressing food sensitivities or allergies, a hydrolyzed protein diet may be more appropriate. If you are looking for a high-quality protein source for general nutrition or muscle recovery, whey protein may be a suitable option.

So far so good

Our adopted cat, Percy has been sick since he arrived, day 1. I figured heโ€™s basically on hospice. With this food heโ€™s almost stopped throwing up every meal. Iโ€™m hoping he regains weight, eventually. I have some hope now. Thanks.

No more stomach-aches for my kitty
VERIFIED PURCHASER

Our vet recommended switching to a different hydrolyzed food after my cat who has IBD started experiencing flare ups again. This was the one that was recommended and it has made so much difference. My cat actually seems excited to eat this food vs the other hydrolyzed foods we had. You can smell the freshness of this food (it smells like a strong can of vegetable soup when you open it up). Even though it is more expensive than other hydrolyzed foods, it is well worth the price. My cat hasn't had any IBD flare-ups since starting this food and I can tell he feels a lot better. His coat's quality has improved as well.

After years of trying to find the cause of my cats skin issues, Ultamino was the solution. She suffers from food allergies and this is the only food that doesnโ€™t break out her skin.
