I have used Science Diet Large Breed Puppy for years. -Used with 10 digs over the years. My Great Pyrenees has been on it for 7.5 months. Switched to the "improved formula" and the dog has had stomach issues and constant diarrhea since the switch. Will unfortunately be switching to a different brand which may cause even more discomfort to my dog. Do not recommend buying.

My labrador puppy had been eating the large breed puppy chicken and oats recipe for almost a year now, we were unable to get the old recipe so we bought the new one and weaned him to it but it is still upsetting his stomach. He has had overly soft stools for the past 3 weeks that he has been on this food. Please bring back the old recipe, we loved the old recipe!
by Copper's mom on 06/10/2023
I fed it to my dog once and I could tell he loved it he kept begging for more I think he enjoyed it so much. I have seen a huge change in my dogs life.
by Marie on 05/14/2021
I wanted to get my puppy the best food available so I started him on this. He has had consistently bad diarrhea the entire time he's been on it. I thought he was just adjusting from the breeders food to the Hills but our vet eventually told us that it's a common problem...and yet vets still recommend it? I'm frustrated because I just want the best for him and I'm disappointed because it's so hard to find one. I really wanted this to work for him but I think we're going to try purina pro plan.
by Emma on 05/12/2021
I have been giving my puppy this food since we adopted her at 9 weeks old. She is now 6 months and 27kgs. She is growing very well, joints look good and vet is so happy. I will never swap this food. Thank you Hills.
by Luisa on 08/11/2020
My dog seems to loving it the first day on it. It also smells good too.
by Aidan on 05/02/2020
I found this kibble great for my mastiff, seemed to be getting all the right nutrients to make him happy and healthy, and he loved feed time. Now with the smaller kibble, he shows little interest, and when he does eat it, he swallows many whole because they're too small for him to crunch them all. Doesn't make him feel good after. Please return to the larger kibble.
by Laurie on 10/18/2019
Our puppy has done so great on the hills puppy food. My parents have also switched to hills for there 2 dogs. GREAT PRODUCT!! My dogs coat, weight, over all everything is great from hills science diet food would like to receive coupons some thou that would help a lot.
by Liberty on 09/17/2019
My dog loves the flavor and it is so healthy for him. Our vet recommended it!
by Clifford on 08/25/2019
My dog can't eat this anymore she just throws up it is because the kibble size is too small. Very disappointed size was changed for a large breed dog
by Hooman of large breed dogs on 08/24/2019
While the quality of this food is good. The kibble size is way too large and has started to give my pup problems with eating. With the kibble size smaller she ate fine but when they switched the formula again it's now hard for her to chew. The pieces are also very hard and take a long time to soften in water
by Sage's mom on 05/08/2019
The new disc size is too small for a large breed puppy. My 60lb 5 month puppy inhales his food now. Unfortunately we will need to find another food that fits his size.
by N/a on 04/01/2019
The smaller kibble size might work better for very young large breed puppies, but the big kibble was what we changed over to from a different brand when our Golden puppy was 10 months because he was losing interest in his small size puppy food. He loved the big kibble Sciene Diet for large breed puppy>1. Now we are back to a lack of interest in the new size.
by Bailey on 03/31/2019
This was the food our vet recommended and our golden retriever puppy used to go nuts for it. Recently the bag and food were changed and our golden will walk away halfway through eating. Going to be looking elsewhere for food from here on out.
by Drew on 03/30/2019
I am raising my puppy on Science Diet LG Breed food and it is doing it's job! He is growing at a healthy pace and his health has greatly improved since i adopted him. He was very sick when i brought him home at 11months old, but now that he has been well fed and given much needed vet care, he has become a healthy, happy pet! Highly recommend science diet food! And a recent improvement that i love is they made the kernels smaller and it now comes in a plastic, velcro zip closure bag so it stays fresher!
by pyrmomoffour on 03/28/2019
My puppy loved this food! Then I noticed a downward spiral after you changed the Large Breed Puppy food flavor and kibble size. He used to gobble his food down, now he snubs it, takes a bite and spits it out. He will eventually eat it, but its a challenge. It also recommends on the bag to start slowly changing over from the old formula to the new formula, however, not sure how anyone was supposed to do this when you abruptly came out with this new bag and can not find the old.one anywhere. Extremely disappointed.
by Laura on 03/16/2019
My disagreement, like others, is with the size. I'm not going to switch again until after this bag because I had just switched to this, and then the second bag I got was the smaller kibble. My 10-month-old golden retriever never chewed a piece of food in the 6 months I'd had her until I got the formerly large Hill's kibbles. She was part of a large litter and then lived 4 months with four adult dogs, and she had learned some bad eating habits. She would suck down the food and then spend the next hour trying to eat every other piece of lint or whatever she could find because her brain didn't even know she'd eaten. (And yes, I tried a puzzle bowl and inserts.) The old Hill's was exactly the right size to slow her down. She chewed the food, was less anxious and hungry after eating, and generally doing great. Fortunately the bag lasted long enough to impress upon her that she didn't have to eat as fast as she possibly can, but she's back to more or less sucking down the food. It may be better for some smaller examples of young puppies, but any LARGE BREED puppies beyond a couple months should have been able to chew the larger kibble just fine, and the new kibble is ridiculously small for anything older than that. Quality of content is still good, but it's not at all the ideal food for my dog and will switch again soon. My "No, I would not recommend" is with regard to people with dogs like mine, large breed puppies who are inclined to eat too quickly, which is not that uncommon.
by Kris on 03/04/2019
While I appreciate the new packaging (sealable bag), the smaller disc like kibble size is very disappointing. One of the reasons I liked this formula was because the large kibble size used to make my Akita pup chew his food. He practically inhales it now. Will be switching after this last bag.
by Johnny peanuts on 02/27/2019
Started feeding my Lab Puppy this food at 7 weeks old. He still loves it at 16 weeks. Kibble size was not an issue. Our Vet is very happy with his size, weight, and overall health.
by Bob on 02/12/2019
The packaging and size of the food was recently changed. I just got a new bag of food yesterday and my 9 month old 87 pound lab did not like the size of the new food. He spit it out and as a lab, that is very rare. He loved the larger size kibble. Now, this kibble is very thin and I noticed the age range changed from Large Breed Puppy < 1 to now Large Breed Puppy up to 18 months. Hoping my dog gets used to the texture and size but really wishing the size wouldn't have changed.
by Jennifer on 02/11/2019
We adopted a Mastiff mix in November when he was 12 weeks old, he was eating the small breed puppy food at that time due to his size. Our vet recommended that he switch over to the large breed kibble, he loves it! He has slowed down to tasting his food, not just gulping it down. I always recommend Science Diet to friends and family, we had another rescue dog who ate only Science Diet light for 12 years and a Yorker poo who eats the small breed variety.
by Dog Lover on 02/02/2019
This is a high quality product for a medium price. My dog loves this food after trying multiple different types of food of all price ranges. The larger pieces actually make him enjoy it more. He likes it much more than the small bite size.
by Dustin on 01/24/2019
Our Puppy loves this food - the larger kibble prevents him from gulping the food down whole. I love the crunching and chewing he's forced to do with this product. Teeth clean and teething satisfied. Perfect.
by Trail Master on 07/26/2018
Our German Sheperd and Pitbull are only 4 months apart so they both eat it, and they love it! They have sensitive stomachs so they do really well on it.
by FurMomma21 on 06/13/2018
Yes, the kibble is larger-it's for large breed puppies. Put it in a blender with equal amounts warm water and it absorbs it within 20 seconds, turning into a fluffy gruel. My 6 week old Rottweiler/Heeler puppies love it, and are now having no problem eating it dry.
by Coley on 05/25/2018
Our 6 month Golden was raised on chicken and barley. 3-4 scoops a day. Bought this variety with oats to give it a try. She ate it first day then went almost a week eating less than a scoop a day. Some days she ate nothing. Either the bag was bad or there is something about this formula. Fortunately Pet Smart has generous return policy. Took it back and got the chicken with barley. She ate 3 scoops in three hours.
by Vega on 04/09/2018
I was recommended this product by a friend who is a vet professional. I started my chocolate lab on this food at around 7 weeks. I was worried about the size of the pieces being too large for my puppy but he absolutely loves it. He has no problems chewing or swallowing the pieces and he seems to absolutely love the taste!
by MeganR08 on 03/29/2018
I was surprised at the size of the kibble. I started my Lab on this food at 7 weeks old, and he didn't have any troubles with the size of the kibble(dry). He absolutely loves this food. I am very surprised about the reviews of other larger breeds and older than my Lab having issues with this kibble. I would recommend this food for any large breed puppy.
by Axle on 03/24/2018
We got our 7 week old f1b golden doodle from the breeder and noted to the vet at her puppy eval that she was a little scrawny. Vet gave us a 5lb sample of this food and said we didn't have to feed as much since it is more dense with nutrients. Initially we were very turned off by the size and hardness of the kibble. We soaked it for about 10 minutes before feeding while teaching basic commands. She loved it. We immediately noticed a difference in her poop. On the breeder provided Purina Puppy Chow (moist and tender) her poop was thin and watery and it came often. On this food, it was almost immediately more normal log-like poop AND less frequent. We don't free feed. We feed per the weight schedule on the bag and divide it by two. Half first thing in the morning ~6, half in the evening ~6. She has seemed 100% satisfied with the amount we feed her. We stopped wetting the food around 10-11 weeks old once she was putting it away quickly, and frankly in hopes she would expend loads of that puppy energy crunching that kibble! She is now 14 weeks old and right at 20 lbs. Body, coat, teeth, everything is great! Highly recommend! Only reason for 4 star quality rating is the size and hardness, but this could be resolved by adding wetting instruction to the bag for very young pups!
by First time Puppy owner on 02/11/2018
I was a little tentative about switching to this food for my puppy based on reviews that the kibbles were too large. The kibbles are larger than what I am used to seeing, but no problem for a large breed puppy. I would compare them to about "thumb nail" width. However, I wouldn't let that stop you from choosing this food. I would disagree with the people saying they are too hard, they seem just as hard as any dry kibble out there, just a little larger. However, my puppy is 6 months old, so I could understand puppies in their smaller stages may not like the big kibbles. My German Shorthaired is about 50lbs now and loves this food! Great nutrition profile and I plan to keep my pup on Hill's food for some time.

Charlie my Lab/Chessie who is going on 11 years old started his life on Science Diet and did very well. Around 3 years old he started refusing to eat. I contacted Science Diet about the food he was eating and was told that the company had changed the formula to the food he was once eating. We tried a different Science diet but could never get back to eating it on a regular bases.
by Sunflower80 on 09/19/2017
We have had great success with this food for our puppy. We have a chocolate lab and she really loves the taste. This food gives her the nutrition she needs to maintain her active puppy lifestyle. This food also keeps her coat shiny and soft. When she first started this food at 8 weeks, she did have trouble with the large size of the kibble. For about a month we had to switch her to the standard puppy version. After that she now handles the larger pieces in the Large Breed Puppy just fine. We look forward to continuing her on Hill's products.
by crystalk101 on 03/18/2017
However... I give the ingredient 100 stars after conducting research and understanding my puppy's nutritional needs. Unfortunately this perfect ingredient is way to large and hard for my 4 month old English Mastiff. My recommendation to SD is to decrease the size, and develop a texture to make more desirable and comfortable for the puppy, as well as to increase sales. My Vet recommended switching my Mastiff to SD from NutriSource, but unfortunately he can't even chew it. It took exactly 20 minutes to attempt to get through one piece after he tried several. I soaked a few in water and he still couldn't eat the kibble. I was even unable to break the MASSIVE kibble by hand dry nor wet. I am very disappointed that such great ingredient can't even be eaten. After my experience I contacted SD and was assisted by a very professional, experienced, concerned, and helpful. Thank you
by Big Red the Mastiff on 09/28/2016
My German Shepherd 12 week old puppy cannot begin to chew this big hard kibble! I have to soak it an hour bf feed times and it's getting burdonsome. I switched to a different brand that has a small, enjoyable kibble. My adult lab's kibble is half this size.
by NeedSmallerKibble on 08/26/2016

We have a one year old male "puppy" boxer, during our last vet visit I explained that I was concerned with his lack of proper weight. She asked what food we were feeding and then suggested that we switch to Science Diet's puppy formula. Once we switched, we noticed an almost immediate weight improvement. I'm happy to report that he has filled out very well and his weight has increased.
by jason on 06/29/2016
The kibble size on this food is huge. My Aussie pup is 7 weeks old and physically can't even bite it. I've always been happy with Hill's food until now. Wouldn't recommend this food until they are several months old.
by mnop on 03/05/2016
I really believe this dog food meets my dogs needs. She likes the taste of it and she seems to be growing big and strong from it. She also has a very regular bowel movement.
by Kita on 12/17/2015
My puppy was having tummy and skin troubles on a cheaper dog food. On a recommendation from a friend, I tried switching to Science Diet Large Breed Puppy dry food. He loved the taste immediately and within a week his tummy and skin troubles cleared up! I feel like the price is a little high but I'll trade that over cleaning up a messy kennel 2-3 times a week!! :)
by Lynseyp07 on 10/04/2015
When we adopted our puppy from the humane society, we were given a small bag of science diet dry puppy food. Even though it was dry food, it was a little moist. We have now purchased 2 large bags over the last couple of months. The larger bags seem a lot dryer. Not sure if this is due to being in a larger bag. Also, while my dog was loosing his baby teeth, it was hard for him to eat this food. Overall, he loves it and will work for it!
by knucklehead on 09/27/2015
It is good to have a high quality dry dog food for my german shepherd puppy. We have been using the Science Diet brand for 5 years now, starting with our pomeranian. Thanks for a trustworthy choice!

I have a 6 month old rottweiler puppy who LOVES the Hill's Science Diet Large Breed Puppy food. She has a sensitive stomach and had problems with other large breed puppy brands. Once we started her on Hills, she immediately got better and loves the way it tastes. Our other dog (a lab mix puppy about 7 months) loves it too! Its nice to have a brand that both dogs enjoy eating and saves us money too!
by TrishaStephens on 08/18/2015
We switched our dog to Science Diet after she could no longer tolerate the food she was on from the shelter. Now, she's strictly a Science Diet dog and can't get enough! She loves meal times and eats really well now that we've changed her food. I can't say enough good things. Science Diet saved us when we weren't sure where else to look!

You're dog will love it even better when mixed with the Hills Science canned food.

by Alisha on 06/10/2015
Science Diet hands down is the best dog food made. Period. I've been using there food for all my dogs " Rottweilers" for over 20 years and this stuff works to perfection. They love the taste they put on the weight but not to fast they always have a beautiful healthy coat. This stuff is awesome. My recent new born Ray Ray was born on Dec 15th 2014 was of coarse winged off the breast and put on Science Diet Puppy Food for large breed around 6 weeks old and I took him for his check up today 06-05-2015 and he weighed in at 76lbs and is not even 6 months old yet. He is healthy and growing like a horse. My vet always says how well Science Diet works so don't waste your time on anything else. If you want the best for your fur babies then buy Science Diet.

I have a rescue pit puppy that came to me barely able to walk on her front legs. She was about 8 weeks old when she hobbled into my life. She had a beautiful face of and an amazing bouncy happy attitude that made her impossible not to love immediately. I started her on a balanced diet and made sure nothing was broken. She is now almost 6 months and you would never know she had any front leg issues as a small puppy.
by Jeanna1971 on 05/20/2015
I have a 6 month old lab who is a very picky eater and he loves this food! I'm glad Hills made a large breed formula with controlled amounts of calcium and phosphorous. No other company does this! It is important you give large breed puppies time to grow into their bodies! I love Hills products! Highly recommended!

I cannot recommend this food enough. Our "puppy" is over forty pounds now. I feel good giving him this food; I know he is getting the best possible start in life. I especially like how it is tailored to puppies who are going to be bigger--the joint health aspect is very important. Plus, it is the only food our vet recommends!

As a veterinary technician I had the chance to really find out what went into their puppy food. I feel that I am doing everything I can on the genetic side of the puppy and SD is doing all the research and everything on the environmental side. I have been fortunate to have wonderful results with my large breed puppies growing very even and having good orthopedics.

My puppy has been picky from the beginning, when our vet recommended your product we had to give it a try, as we had pretty much tried every other brand out there. Previously to trying your product, he would generally only eat about a 3rd of his food before walking away, from the very first day of trying your product our puppy loved it. He gave us what we call the "crazy tail" and ate every single bite, he licks the bowl and has yet to leave food behind. The food for puppy large breed has been a great for his coat, his teeth and his overall health! We have not switched our other dog and both cats to Science Diet and haven't looked back yet!

During a recent grand re-opening of a Lawn, Garden and Pet Store, we conferred with a gentleman from Science Diet. He had explained that even though some pet foods may have a lot of vitamins and stuff in the food, this may not be good for all dogs. In our situation with our Mastiff mix, his bones are already growing very rapidly. if the food contained too much calcium, his bones would grow even faster and not give his body time to catch up. We had another mastiff mix that was having trouble as he indicated. Sadly, we had lost him last fall. He gave me a free 40lb bag of Large breed puppy food and a bag of treats. The puppy loves the treats. My daughter was working with him getting him to learn sit. He picked it up very quickly because he loves those treats. After eating the Science Diet food, we can see his coat is very thick and healthy looking. Very satisfied with the product and the representatives.

We originally started our rescued 3 month old Pit mix puppy on a different premium pet food, but were having a difficult time getting him to eat. I decided to give Science Diet large breed puppy a try because we had good results with Science Diet food about 7 years ago with our previous large breed dog. We also noticed the best taste guarantee on the bag and decided it was worth a try. Our puppy immediately gobbled it down and looked to us as if to ask for more. We have been feeding it now for two weeks and he still loves it and looks great. Because he is eating his food at once rather than grazing it has made potty training much easier and more predictable. Thanks for making puppy mealtime easier!

With the increasing number of musculoskeletal issues in large breed dogs and higher expectations in performance getting these pups started right is key. I recommend Science Diet large breed and my own labrador is on it as well. Nice coat, good growth rate, and he loves the taste.

I adopted a golden doodle from Ohio last month. We switched his food to Science Diet Large breed puppy. I have always used your products since I started working in the veterinary field 18 years ago I have had cats, dogs, ferrets. Science diet in the only food I will use on my pets. Wonderful product. I also finished your VNA program several years ago and retired last year from Abbey East Animal Hospital. I have always recommended your product to friends and clients as the best on the market. I trust your product and being the best for the health of my new puppy

Our St Bernard/Great Dane hybrid puppy, Panda, loves this food. We were suggested this food at the vet due to her diarrhea problems and ever since eating this her problems were gone. Not to mention this is the only puppy food we've tried that she actually enjoys eating. Others she ate just because it was food and there. Love this product!

We got Cooper, our Great Dane puppy, at 1 1/2 months old. We started feeding him what the breeder was using. They are very nice people but not professional breeders. We slowly converted Cooper to a better brand of food . At 3 months our vet suggested we change to Science Diet Puppy Large Breed and are we ever happy She did. Cooper always took His time finishing the first 2 dog foods we were using and defecated a BUNCH. When we switched to Science Diet he finishes it quickly, completely and the defecation factor probably cut in half.....indicates to me that the S.D. food has a lot less filler in it. We are sticking with S.D. for the rest of Coop's life which will be a LONG time we pray.

This is an excellent food for a large breed puppy and I always recommend it first to anyone who has one. The long term difference is amazing. I have a 5 1/2 year old great Dane who started on this food and then switched to large breed adult... My dog has never shown any signs of joint problems and still acts like a puppy.... Now I have a new great Dane puppy to add to my family... She's on large breed puppy food now and I would never consider changing to another food

The Science Dietยฎ Puppy Large Breed kibble is the ticket to seventh heaven for our puppy Victoria. Just the sound of us opening the package and scooping good cupfuls of the kibble brings Victoria running from whether she is, sit down, wag her tail, and wait for us to finish serving her. She sits there with this expectant gleam in her eyes, cocking her head to the side, as the aroma of croquettes and the yogurt & Puppy Gourmet Chicken Entrรฉe canned food we mix in fills the kitchen. Victoria is very obedient and waits for us to place the dish on the ground, her tail wagging harder and harder as she tries to sit still. Once we tell her to stand up, she enjoys her meal fully, carefully selecting small chunks of kibble and chewing them slowly, savoring. She takes her time, but does she enjoy it, the steady crunching of the kibble in her mouth a good indication. In the space of 5 minutes, the meal is gone, and she often sits there, looking at us with these eyes that say "Can you give me more, this is good!" We often catch her sniffing behind the pantry door, where the Science Diet chow is stored. Talk about a journey to a healthy paradise!

I have a great dane puppy who recently turned 6 months old. He has been eating Science Diet Large Breed Puppy food since he was three months old. He is doing fantastic, and anyone who knows about giant breed dogs, the food that you give them is one of the most important things while they are a puppy. Science Diet has just the right balance of ingredients to make sure that he doesn't grow too fast or too big and run the risk of joint damage.

This is a great, quality food for large breed dogs.

I acquired Shadow, a mixed German Shepard from a shelter in Greenbrier TN He was 8 weeks old. He went from the shelter directly to the vet for a checkup. He weighed 11 pounds. We got a bag of Science Diet large breed puppy food as a sample. He just loved it so we kept buying it for him. He is now just about 5 12 months old and is approaching 50 pounds. All muscle. He still loves the food and eats about 3 12 cups per day of the large breed puppy food. He has snacks occasionally which are not Science Diet but they are only for rewarding behavior. He has been potty trained for at least 2 months. I am sure it is because the Science Diet food is extremely digestable. We feel certain the Science Diet food is why he is growing both physically and mentally. White House TN

I use science diet dry dog food. My puppy doesn't seem to need as much food to be full and she seems to retain most of the food for strong growth. I have a very active, healthy puppy and I get my moneys worth when I use science diet. I don't buy food as often as I would if I used a cheaper off brand. I also have an 8 year old dog that has always eaten science diet and he is still active and vibrant and healthy.

I first was introduced to Science Diet through my vet. My dog enjoys this food very much and I enjoy the fact that it is backed by veterinarians. I want what is best for my dog and I feel he is getting that with this product!

We tried two other brands and now vet recommeded Science Diet Large Breed Puppy food. Our Rottweiler is 4 months old, loves the chow and growing like a weed on steroids. I can see the growth in him every single day. The vet was amazed with his shiny soft fur. Science Diet Large Breed Puppy chow gives the pup what it needs. If you want the food bowl to shine like his fur just mix a couple spoons of canned food in and he will lick it clean.

We have a Chocolate Lab puppy she has eaten Science Diet since we brought her home at 8 weeks. She has an extremely soft and shiny coat. She is an all around healthy dog!

We were given a sample bag at the vet at our puppy's first checkup. She wasn't eating the food we were giving her very well (eating real slow, walking away from it, not finishing it all) so we started mixing in the Science Diet and she picked all of it out and left the other stuff! She spoke for herself so we switched her over completely to Science Diet Puppy Large Breed and she now polishes off her dish without wandering away!

I have been trying so many brands of dog food trying to find one that all my dogs like. I have 5 dogs and all of them are picky , either two like the food and the other three don't so it's been really hard to get all of them to agree on one and they All agreed on Hill's Large Breed Puppy food.

We started using Science Diet for our GSD puppy after a recommendation from our vet. She has done very well on the Science Diet Large Breed puppy. Her weight and overall health has been on the right track and it's been easy for her to eat and digest. We look forward to being Science Diet customers for a very, very long time, since we plan on having our girl around until she is old and grey!

Our English Bulldog, Annie, had a TERRIBLE belly before starting her on Science Diet Large Breed Puppy. I am feeding half of what I did with the "cheaper" brand and she does so much better!

I have a yellow female lab almost a year old. I have been feeding her the original dry food for large puppies almost since I got her at 49 days. I started with a different puppy food and it upset her stomach that she could not keep that food down. l switched to Science Diet Original and am very satisfied with it. She is lean and her coat smooth and does not shed like the other labs that I had previously. I highly recommend this food for puppies.

I have a 9 month old female Black Labrador Retriever and I recently switched her food to Science Diet. She has only been eating the new food for a couple of months but already I can see a difference in her coat and skin. She loves the new food. I highly recommend this food to anyone.
