What is ONC dog food?
Answer

ONC dog food refers to a specialized line of therapeutic foods formulated for dogs diagnosed with cancer. This line of specialized dog foods was launched by Hillโ€™s Nutrition last year. As per Hillโ€™s Nutrition, malnutrition is one of the biggest risks to pets with cancer. Chad Johannes, DVM from Colorado State University, emphasizes that a pet's cancer-related appetite directly impacts how owners gauge their pet's well-being. Therefore, these foods are designed to support the nutritional needs of dogs undergoing cancer treatment, aiming to maintain their strength, energy levels, and appetite. The formulation prioritizes high-quality ingredients that are easily digestible and rich in essential nutrients. This includes proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals crucial for overall health and immune function. Additionally, these diets might incorporate specific ingredients known for their potential benefits in managing cancer symptoms or supporting the body's natural defenses. By providing tailored nutrition, ONC dog food strives to optimize the well-being and quality of life of dogs battling cancer.Reference:https://www.petfoodprocessing.net/articles/16736-hills-launches-new-prescription-diet-to-support-pets-with-cancer

What is the best food for a dog with cancer?
Answer

For dogs diagnosed with cancer, a diet rich in easy-to-digest, high-quality proteins is recommended. Opt for lean sources such as chicken, turkey, fish, and eggs. These proteins provide essential amino acids necessary for tissue repair and immune function. Additionally, consider incorporating healthy fats like those found in fish or flaxseed oil to support overall health and provide energy. It's crucial to avoid overly processed foods and opt for whole, natural ingredients whenever possible. Consultation with a veterinary nutritionist can provide personalized guidance based on the dog's specific condition, stage of cancer, and individual needs. According to Dr. Renee Alsaraff, a DVM and member of PetCure Radiation Oncology Specialists, ensuring proper hydration is also vital, so provide clean, fresh water at all times. Overall, a balanced and nutritious diet tailored to the dog's condition can support their overall well-being during cancer treatment.Reference:https://petcureoncology.com/caring-for-dog-with-cancer/

Can dogs with cancer be saved?
Answer

The prognosis for dogs with cancer varies greatly depending on the type, stage, and aggressiveness of the disease. Some cancers respond well to treatment, such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy, offering a chance for remission or prolonged survival. However, in some cases, especially if the cancer is detected late or is particularly aggressive, the prognosis may be less favorable. Despite advances in veterinary medicine, not all cancers can be cured, but palliative care can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. In rare cases, particularly with certain types of cancers or specific circumstances, dogs with cancer can experience remarkable recoveries or even complete remission. According to Luca Storm, a dog rescuer, their Beagle mix was diagnosed with colon cancer over a year ago. The vet gave her only a short time to live since she was already 16 years old. She had constant bloody stools and reddish mucus discharges, lost a lot of weight, had no appetite, and lacked energy. Luca was determined to make the rest of their dogโ€™s life as happy and comfortable as possible. Luca started a Keto diet for their dog. Now, over a year later, she has gained weight, stopped discharging bloody mucus, and regained her previous energy. What not to feed a dog with cancer?
Answer

In dogs with cancer, it's crucial to avoid feeding foods high in sugar, as cancer cells thrive on glucose. Thus, grains such as corn and wheat, which are carbohydrate-rich and can elevate blood sugar levels, should be limited or avoided altogether. Excessive sugar intake can potentially exacerbate the growth of cancer cells and compromise the dog's health further. Additionally, processed foods containing additives, preservatives, and artificial colors should be avoided. This is because they may contain ingredients that could potentially harm the dog's weakened immune system or interfere with cancer treatment. Instead, focus on feeding a balanced diet consisting of high-quality proteins, healthy fats, and limited carbohydrates to support the dog's health and immune function.

What is the diet for a dog with liver cancer?
Answer

For a dog diagnosed with liver cancer, a specialized diet aimed at supporting liver function and overall health is essential. A high-protein, low-carbohydrate, and grain-free diet is often recommended. This diet aims to minimize the strain on the liver by reducing carbohydrates as they can be challenging for the liver to process. High-quality proteins provide essential amino acids necessary for tissue repair and immune function, while fats can serve as a concentrated energy source. Additionally, incorporating antioxidant-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables can help combat oxidative stress and inflammation associated with cancer. It's crucial to work closely with a veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist to tailor the diet to the individual dog's needs. This ensures optimal nutritional support alongside any medical treatments for liver cancer.

H
Made my end stage metastatic cancer dog super excited to eat

I'm a Certified Veterinary Technician working at a specialty ER hospital Our Hill's Representative recently came with some samples of this food to try in patients. Unfortunately, my 12y/o FS Chihuhua mix was recently diagnosed with metastatic disease after her Intestinal Adenocarcinoma removal back in November. Her appetite has not been the greatest, and I was given a sample bag of the ONC care dry food by one of my colleagues to try on her, and she inhaled it, without her appetite stimulant as well! Hill's got it right again with their amazing therapeutic diets. Would recommend to anyone who has a fur baby with cancer, especially if they have appetite issues as well.
