What is Hillโ€™s ONC diet?
Answer

Hill's Prescription Diet ONC Care Canned Dog Food is a specialized dietary formula crafted to address the nutritional needs of dogs undergoing oncological treatment. The acronym "ONC" stands for oncology, emphasizing its focus on supporting dogs battling cancer. This diet is meticulously formulated to provide essential nutrients that help maintain the energy levels of dogs, which are often compromised during cancer treatment. According to Karen Shenoy, DVM, Hillโ€™s U.S. chief veterinary officer, ONC Care offers vets a powerful new recommendation for supporting pets' eating habits. She mentions that the highly digestible protein in the ONC diet assists pets in maintaining muscle mass, energy, and strength. The diet also incorporates a prebiotic blend aimed at nurturing the gut microbiome and ensuring consistent stool quality. Furthermore, the kibble is engineered to be softer and more chewable. Additionally, it is designed to stimulate the appetite of dogs. This ensures that they receive adequate nutrition even when they might not feel like eating due to the side effects of cancer treatment. The ingredients are selected and balanced to support overall health and well-being, aiming to optimize the dog's nutritional status throughout their cancer journey. Hill's ONC Care Canned Dog Food plays a crucial role in supporting the overall health and quality of life of dogs undergoing cancer treatment. It helps them maintain their vitality and resilience during this challenging time by providing a nutritionally balanced and palatable diet.Reference:https://todaysveterinarybusiness.com/new-oncology-weight-loss-pet-food/

How can I make my dog comfortable with cancer?
Answer

your dog comfortable with cancer involves several key strategies. Firstly, ensure they receive appropriate pain management medication prescribed by your veterinarian. This can help alleviate any discomfort or pain associated with the cancer. Secondly, continue to engage in activities your dog enjoys, adapting them as necessary to accommodate their condition. Whether it's short walks, gentle playtime, or simply spending quality time together indoors, maintaining familiar routines can provide comfort and joy. Additionally, consider making adjustments to your dog's environment to enhance their comfort. Provide soft bedding in quiet, warm areas of the house where they can rest undisturbed. Ensure easy access to food, water, and litter boxes, if applicable, to minimize any stress or discomfort.Reference:https://www.dogcancer.com/articles/building-your-team/team-leader/

Is keto good for dogs with cancer?
Answer

While a ketogenic diet isn't a cure, it can benefit dogs with cancer by potentially improving outcomes. Case studies suggest its efficacy in enhancing the health of dogs. Luca Storm, a seasoned pet owner, recounted the journey of their beloved beagle mix, who was diagnosed with colon cancer over a year ago. Due to the dog's advanced age of 16 years, conventional treatments like surgery, chemo, and radiation were ruled out. The pup suffered from persistent bloody stools, reddish mucus discharges, weight loss, loss of appetite, and diminished energy levels. Determined to enhance the quality of life for their furry friend, Luca opted for a tailored Keto diet for dogs. Over the span of a year, remarkable improvements unfolded: weight gain, cessation of bloody mucus discharge, and a return to previous energy levels. Although the dog hasn't fully regained its former weight, Luca isn't overly concerned, given its previous overweight status. Moreover, Luca ensures the dog fasts for 12 hours every night and receives 8โ€“10 hours of uninterrupted sleep, contributing significantly to its overall well-being.Reference:https://www.quora.com/Dog-Cancer-If-I-should-have-a-dog-and-it-has-cancer-should-I-subject-it-to-chemo-and-radiation-therapy-Or-put-it-to-sleep-Or-just-let-it-die-naturally-without-intervention

What is the best homemade food for dogs with cancer?
Answer

When preparing homemade food for dogs with cancer, it's crucial to focus on providing high-quality ingredients that support their nutritional needs and overall health. A balanced diet consisting of 75% cooked fatty meats like dark poultry, non-farmed salmon, or ground lamb ensures they receive essential proteins. Additionally, incorporating eggs as a protein source can offer a variety of valuable nutrients. The remaining 25% should comprise non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, mushrooms, and green leafy vegetables. This is because they provide vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants crucial for bolstering the immune system and fighting off cancerous cells. Adding extra fat from sources like olive oil, flaxseed oil, hemp seed oil, or avocado oil helps maintain energy levels and supports overall health. It's also advisable to include a vitamin-mineral supplement approved for dogs to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients. Furthermore, incorporating a calcium supplement and antioxidant blend supplement can further support their health and well-being, aiding in their battle against cancer.

How long can a dog live with cancer?
Answer

The prognosis for a dog with cancer varies based on factors like cancer type, stage, overall health, and treatment options. Without treatment, survival time can be as short as two months or less. However, with treatment, the outlook can improve significantly. For example, dogs with low-grade oral melanoma (stages 1 through 3) can live over 18 months with treatment. Early detection and intervention are crucial in managing canine cancer. Conversely, dogs diagnosed with high-grade melanoma (stage 4) may face a tougher prognosis, often surviving less than three months with treatment. Veterinary oncology advancements offer various treatment options like surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. This extends and enhances the quality of life for dogs battling cancer. Ultimately, a veterinary oncologist considers multiple factors to determine the best course of action for each case.

My dog likes this

Our 13 year old Yorkie gobbles this up. He has not had any ill effects from the diet change, usually gets sick every time we've tried to change his food. He's actually got more energy and spunk compared to before. This is a good formula, leans more keto with really good nutrients added in. Happy they've developed this. Our dog got diagnosed with a type of melanoma. *We do mix in some cooked ground beef (range fed, we just hv an over abundance) with shredded carrots, coconut oil and a bit of fresh spinach. He's living his best end of life! :)

YES, she eats it!

My dog will eat this food after her chemo treatment. She was already under weight and then lost some more weight after her surgery. She has a period of 3-4 days when she struggles to eat after a chemo treatment. BUT she will eat this food! THANK YOU!!!

My dog would not eat

My dog was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma in June and is doing chemotherapy but will not eat this food. He will eat ground turkey and other odds and ends here and there but I really wanted him to eat this food for the claims Hill's makes about it and to support him through his cancer treatment. Cancer is stressful enough. Hill's should remove their false claims. I hope it works for others though. My dog would not eat the dry food or the wet of the ONC care.
