My frenchie was very sick when she was 3 months old and we couldnโt figure out why. She had extremely high AST/ALT liver values for unknown reasons. After many lab draws and a liver biopsy we figured she has hereditary copper storage disease. Dog foods are very high in copper and it is not regulated. After a ton of research, this is one of the lowest copper dog foods you can get. My dog likes the taste of it and the pebbles are perfect size and not too hard. Sheโs now 4 and her liver values are back to normal after near death!

They decreased the kibble size which was great.. but PLEASE make this in a smaller bag. 17 pounds is just so wasteful when I have a 3 pound yorkie with liver problems.
by Libby on 08/26/2023
Prescription. Lab gained 14 pounds in 4 months
by Mel on 05/21/2023
My dogs loves the taste of it, but the kibble is too big. They made it a bit smaller recently I'm assuming so it can be for both large and small dogs, but the bag is MASSIVE. Doesn't matter that I have the most airtight container to keep it fresh for as long as possible, toward the end of the bag it just makes my dog sick because it's just too old. PLEASE sell smaller bags! The majority of dogs with liver issues are small dogs anyway. I don't understand why there's only one size bag. Smaller kibble would be nice too but I'd settle for a smaller bag.

My lil pupperoni warmed right up to this food!
by Greggy Boi on 12/27/2022
My dog has high liver enzymes and was put on l/d. She was doing great. Then unexpectedly the recipe was changed to a chicken flavor. As my dog is allergic to chicken, I guess we're now SOL.

It's great!

My 11 yr old lab mix started having elevated liver levels (doubling every month). Vet (Lexington Animal Hospital) put him on Hills Liver Support AND we started feeding him only bottled water (copper pipes may have been a contaminate). After 1 month his levels DROPPED from 623 to 180! Also stopped feeding him any treats with COPPER additives. So thankful for this dog food product and for the vets recommendation!
by Susan on 06/10/2021
L/D has helped my 4.5 pound Maltese but we wish you would produce this in SMALLER bites and Smaller bags. Thank you for your attention to these issues.

My little pug was diagnosed with a liver shunt before he was diagnosed he was so quiet and had no motivation.once the vet worked out what was wrong with him he's now just like a normal pug.

I have a Cairn Terrier who I have taken to 4 vets and a veterinary school for diagnosis. He has an unquenchable thirst no matter how much water he was given, he would wake me every 1 1/2-2 hours all night to take him out, was restless and constantly poking me and anyone with his nose to get him more water. Diagnosis of diabetes and Cushings Disease have been ruled out by his tests and it may be a shunt. Exploratory surgery is financially prohibitive so my vet suggested Hills l/d. It was expensive (though when I divided the cost by the number of weeks a bag lasts him, it turns out to be less costly than what I was feeding him ! ), BUT, after one week on this dog food his demeanor changed. He still will drink as much water as I put down for him, but he sleeps all night, his personality is calmer, he was skeletal before even though he ate well - now he has put on weight and looks like a healthy dog. So, the old adage is true, "you are what you eat". I was feeding him a very good, expensive dog food before but this is so tailored to what his little body needs. I can't say enough about this product, Thank you.
by Sandra D on 08/20/2019
My little Chihuahua was diagnosed with liver issues earlier this year. While trying everything else under the sun to make him better, we (us & the vet) finally decided to change his food in June. He struggles to chew these large sized bites. Can't you make smaller ones? Can you also make it healthier? He's gained almost 1 1/2 lbs. in the last 60 days!
by Me on 08/09/2019
Something hsppened to this Liver food. My dog ate it for months with no problems. Now she won't touch it. I wonder if it is contaminated like yourwet food.
by Bb on 04/02/2019
The W/D did help with the gastro issues, but nobody should keep a dog on this stuff long term. If you look at the ingredients you will see that the product is mostly fillers, poor carb sources, admittedly high in fibers, but not a real food item in the bunch. Then a ton of supplements. The company has a nerve charging these prices for a product which costs pennies to make. It just shows how lacking in nutritional knowledge the average vet is. It isn't their thing, but they should do a little research before exposing their patients to this garbage--and profiting from it.

My lab just had her gallbladder removed and my Vet said she has to be on this dog food for the rest of her life. She hates it! She's a lab and has always eaten anything put in front of her. On good days I can hand feed her to get in the 3 cups a day, other days she smells it and walks away. I don't know what to do to get her to eat. Any suggestions?
by Harley on 11/12/2018
Dog is eating it - refuses to eat the other liver diet brand - so good for now. The fact that Hill's does not offer a reasonable bag size for smaller dogs is inexcusable - really.
by JB46 on 08/06/2018
I have the same qualm as another reviewer(s). My chihuahua loves her l/d despite being a picky eater. I'm so unhappy that you don't offer the dry version in smaller bags :(. My dog has been dependent on this food for 6 years so far. While we are very grateful that it exists for patients with liver issues, please please please consider offering smaller bags of the dry version!!!!!
by Angela on 04/14/2018
Although it is costly, my dog loves this food. She has pretty bad liver values but after going on this food and a liver supplement, her levels are back to normal. My dog is a small aussie that was only 2 when her liver values skyrocketed. After trying this diet ( even after dreading the high price.) she changed for the better. Even her coat and skin look better! Plus her weight is perfect. I would recommended this to any dogs with high ALT values.
by HazelandLilly on 01/30/2018
My yorkie was born with a congenital liver shunt that required an intense surgery and a strict diet to help him function properly. We were started in the wet Pet ld and it helped my dog get back to his normal spunky self! Only bad side was he had very bad tarter buildup on the inside and outside of his gum lines so I decided to switch to the dry. Problem is the kibble is too big, he doesn't eat half as much as what is written on the guidelines. I have to cut it into pieces to get him to eat a quarter of his bowl. I weened him gradually, mixed wet and dry and still no luck. I fixed the liver problem with an expensive surgery... and now I could run into gum disease. It would be awesome if you could make smaller kibble.
by Diana on 12/22/2017
The product is of high quality, but is only available in larger sized bites. My dog is small, has a hard time eating the bigger bites. Have been unable to find the Liver Care product in small dog sized kibble.
by NickC on 09/10/2017
I started using the Liver Care prescription food for our dog Maddie about 5 months ago because her liver function was poor. In just a few months her liver function has steadily improved. She will continue on the Hills diet while her liver regenerates to a normal liver. Thank you!!!
by Bunzer on 06/15/2017
My lil Lilly needs this dog food and she is only 5 lbs. so buying a 17 lb bag would be too costly and would go to waste please make it in a smaller bag 4 lbs or 5 lbs...she hates the canned food but I try to push it she is so picky in what she eats...Please help make it easier for us with small toy breed babies....Thank You
by frspiker on 05/01/2017
My dog loves the canned I/D but doesn't care for the dry version. The feeding guidelines recommend over 3 cans per day. I don't know how anyone could afford that since this food is outrageously expensive.

Izzy has been on l/d dry food for almost a year now. It seems to be helping. The transition to this food was smooth and she loves the flavor

When Maverick was put on Prescription Diet I/d low fat for his digestive problems we worried he wouldn't like it. To the contrary he LOVES it. We've used both the kibble and the canned variety and he is quick to make "all gone" for every meal. Three years later he is now healthy and thriving.
by Mavericks Mom on 06/29/2016
I only know that my dog, a six pound Yorkie was so sick with inflammation of the lining of the small intestine.after ultra sound and diagnosis the treatment was to change food to Hill's Low fat diet, and the use of steroids for a time. I saw an immediate change with the use of the food. He was so skinny after the steroid treatment. It took a month on the food and he is completely cured. Just wish it was a little less expensive!
by Pansylover59 on 09/17/2015
My vet put my shiba inu mix on l/d dry about three years ago to help her liver function. My dog is now at least 15 years old (she was one-ish when I adopted her in 2000), and she is the Energizer Bunny.
by Yankee on 03/23/2015
Well it has to be good because it's keeping my dog healthy. He's been on it for 2 years now. Since he started on it the cost has gone up. I always look for coupons I buy it every month because I don't want to risk his health having seizures. So I have no choice to buy it anywhere else but at my vet. So I truly wish it cost less.
by Candyg on 11/25/2014
This food works great for my dog's liver condition and she gobbles it down. So she must like it. My only suggestion would be to have it available in a smaller size bag, too. The large bag is heavy and a little hard to handle. I love this food because it does make a difference.
by Haniandbeau on 10/11/2014
My senior GSP has been able to keep her liver enzymes down as a result of feeding her the canine Rx Diet ld. She feels great and is also able to keep her weight where it should be. She also enjoys the canned Rx Diet ld that I use to help keep her weight up. She is just shy of 16 years of age. :)
by Lloyd179 on 10/04/2014
added many years to my boy's life. Enzyme levels have retuned to normal.
by cici on 09/07/2014
This food is pretty expensive, but it was the only thing my 2 month old labrador would eat when he was diagnosed with a liver shunt. 8 months later we are slowly trying to integrate other foods, but he still seems to really love the l/d. Wish they offered more coupons/discounts, especially for customers whose dogs will be on the food long term.
by tlnash on 09/05/2014
Dog food is ok but this is this only food the vet recommends but he is tired of the same taste day after day. Need additional favors in this food.
by KUFan on 09/03/2014
Prescription Diet l/d plays an important role in helping my dog maintain a healthy diet while supporting her special liver function needs. Additionally, she really loves it!
by mdgriff on 09/02/2014
Since our dog has been on the Hills prescription diet product his overall health has actually improved.
by MacGregor on 08/27/2014
My dog likes the taste of the food and his levels have improved. My only complaint is the cost. It is expensive. Your coupons do help. I wish you could use a coupon every month to help cover the cost of the food.
by rlg57 on 08/19/2014
My Scottish terrier mix was posioned over a year ago and has experienced liver problems since that time. He has been on the Hills prescription diet since then and loves the food!! He recently has been taken off his liver medication for a trial run but is still on his special food diet. He will be going this weekend for his liver profile check up and fingers crossed the results will be good. Even though this has been a tough time and I still can't understand why someone would hurt an innocent animal it's nice to know there is quality product that has helped assist in his healing process.
by Murph on 08/08/2014
I had to change my dog to this prescription food last month. He is now so active and full of energy. He is a very picky eater, so I was very happy when he ate every piece! I would recommend this food to anyone whose veterinarian recommends it for their precious dog.
by Sebsmom on 08/06/2014
Adopted a rescue puppy with serious liver problems. She had surgery and is on l/d and loves it. So happy she is doing well and so happy that you offer coupons to help with the costs
by candy21 on 07/25/2014
My dog's liver panel has remained fairly level since using this product. It is expensive and requires preordering to insure veterinarian has supply on hand. Our senior dog eats it daily but now I add water to soften. I especially like when coupons are available to lessen expense.
by Daisymom on 07/21/2014
My 11 1/2 yr old lab has been on Hill's Prescription Diet l/d dry and wet for 2 1/2 yrs after being diagnosed with liver issues. Before the l/d we have used other Hill's Prescription Diet foods with great success. We believe that between the l/d food and her meds she is still with us today, living a healthy and happy life! Thanks Hill's!!
by chasg1rl on 07/06/2014
my only complaint is that i would like to buy the l/d dry but it only comes in hugh bags when you have a tiny yorkie who would nt eat that bag before it expired and to lay out 60 is crazy even tho you refund expired bags please make smaller bags
by mybella on 06/30/2014
My dog actually eats both the wet and dry form of the LD food. I think the quality is great but the price is high. I wish you all offered more coupons for those of us having to buy the more expensive prescription formulas. However, I am grateful to have such a good product to offer my dog. She really likes the wet version better than the dry. Perhaps you could add something that would make it more palatable for her.
by Precap on 06/13/2014
My dogs like the taste and their ailment seems to be in check. My only complaint is that it is too expensive.
by JohnFromBowie on 06/09/2014
I was worried over my dog's health condition. She is suffering with liver problems. My vet told me to put her on Hill's Prescription Diet l/d dry food. We tried it and along with medication she has made a great recovery. She is back to herself and continues to enjoy a good quality of life.
by CocoaW11 on 05/25/2014
She likes the taste of both the dry and canned and eats them just fine. I was a little worried about that because my other dog did not like. But he only tried it the first couple days after his gallbladder surgery and did not have his appetite back. He would be happy to eat it out of her bowl now if I let him! My only issue is the price. Most likely, my girl dog will be on the food the rest of her life because of her liver problems. She is a 55 lbs dog and the 17.5 lbs page does not go very far. I'm used to buying dog food in 40 lbs bags and was shocked by the price of such a little bag of dog food. But, it makes her feel good and I love her, so I buy it. I bought the canned just to have some wet food on hand and to try to make dog biscuits out of it. The dog biscuits flopped for me. The food is so "dry" for a canned food that I could not get it stay together. But she is happy to eat the canned as is, so it was not a total loss. It would be nice if you made l/d dog treats. To sum things up, we were ready to put our 12.5 year old dog to sleep because eating was making her so sick. Your food has greatly increased her quality of life and life expectancy. Thanks for listening.
by adwbeloved on 05/10/2014
Our dog has never been picky about his food...ever. Unfortunately he doesn't care for this food and only eats it when he realizes we are not giving him anything else. We are hoping he will get used to it because it seems as though it is actually lowering his liver enzyme levels. The food is pricy but if it helps, and he'll eat it, we will continue to buy it.
by Yoder1997 on 05/03/2014
L/D dry made it possible for Odie to stay in my life for 9 years- he ate it for over 8 yrs- he had a liver shunt- Being a LVT with multiole animals cookig for him would have been impossible.Even thoug it was expensive- it wasless expensive than the only other commericial prescription diet and he likes it better. I wish that the bag sizes hadn't changed for feeding a 60# dog- 17.6 # only lasts 20.5 days. ANd they never wualitfied for any of the special sales of buying large bags-
by vtsgarland on 03/23/2014
My dog likes the food. We did not have any problem introducing the LD diet. My only complaint is the price of the food.
by rlg57 on 03/16/2014
Without this diet my sweet Callie would not live very long, it is truly a life saving formula.
by mskras10 on 03/13/2014
Since I will have to keep my dog on this diet for the rest of his life and he is a large dog this gets expensive!

My dog, Monty, diagnosed with liver problems and was placed on L/D. He is doing awesome! The kibble is a good size and Monty eats all of it. He has more energy and is back to begging and doing his tricks. Thank you!!!

My Dog was 1 year and 10 months when she developed some type of liver issue, I took her to the vet everyday for IV fluids and monitoring for almost two weeks before her fever broke. The vet put her on the L/D food and she started to slowly improve. after 6 weeks she was back to her old self and slowly moved to normal foods. Thanks Hills for having a product that saved my baby girls life.
by Jackie99 on 01/28/2014
Our Yorkie has a liver shunt and can't have much protein, so I'm grateful this food is available for her to have nutrition that her little body can handle! They said she would not likely live past 18 months but she is almost four years old now ... My only complaint is that she doesn't like the taste of it and has to act like she's starving before she eats it. The wet food she likes and eats fine, but it is a bit more expensive.
by jf01 on 01/27/2014
The LD keeps my dog alive as her liver does not function and without it she would not be healthy. L

My miniature schnauzer, Zoe, was born with a poor functioning liver. The vet told us that we would be lucky if she lived more than six months. We decided to change her diet as he suggested (rather than go with an expensive operation that only had a 50% chance of working) and we chose to give her Hill's l/d product. Well our little Zoe is now 4 1/2 years old! We use the wet and dry versions of this product. Sometimes she's not thrilled about the taste, but it certainly has provided her with a happy and healthy life. I am glad that Hill's helped us prove the doc wrong.
by DJBWA on 09/26/2013
This product was prescribed by my vet and has helped my dog with his condition so with a well balance diet and medication he is doing great. For this I am so happy. My only thing is because he will be on this for the rest of his life I do wish the cost was a bit less or coupons would be available continuously to help with the cost. I am buying this every 2 months and he is only 3 yrs. old. Thank you for your time.
by Bella on 09/23/2013
My dog, Molly was prescribed this product due to high bile level count but she is amazingly improving after switching to this product. My only problem with this product is that the dry version only comes in a large bag, which it would take more than a year for my 7 lbs chihuahua to finish the entire bag. She is a really picky eater that she eats a mixture of dry and wet food. So buying both canned and a huge bag of dry prescription food is not too affordable when the dry version only comes in large bags.
by Raquel on 08/21/2013
we were worried about changing our dog's food . he loves the canned food and especially loves the dry food. we were very relieved.
by lecomten on 08/08/2013
It would be great if you would give a customer a free bag of dog food for every 10 bags bought or so. Our dog has been on this food for 6 years and now our son's dog is on it and one of his friends dog is also on it. All the dogs are over 10 years of age and doing great on this food.
