What food is recommended for a cat suffering from kidney disease?
Answer

The best food for a cat with kidney disease is a renal diet, as recommended by FiLeBeau, a former vet nurse. This specialized diet is formulated to support kidney function by balancing fluids, electrolytes, and minerals in the body. Renal diets are available in both wet sachets and dry food varieties. When transitioning to a renal diet, it's essential to follow your veterinarian's advice and gradually introduce the new food to your cat. Start by mixing small amounts of renal food with your cat's usual food, gradually increasing its proportion over several weeks. Renal diets help limit the buildup of waste products, reduce strain on the kidneys, and support overall kidney health. Additionally, providing ample fresh water can help ensure your cat stays hydrated, which is crucial for managing kidney disease.Reference: https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-best-food-to-feed-my-cat-that-has-been-diagnosed-with-kidney-problems-and-the-vet-has-recommended-a-kidney-diet/answer/FiLeBeau-1?ch=10&oid=1477743671839769&share=bc97d657&srid=hpmxqX&target_type=answer

Is wet food bad for cats with kidney disease?
Answer

Wet food is not inherently bad for cats with kidney disease. In fact, it can be beneficial. Wet food has a higher moisture content compared to dry food, which mimics a cat's natural diet and promotes better kidney health. Adequate hydration is crucial for cats with kidney disease, as it helps to flush out toxins and maintain kidney function. Wet food can help prevent dehydration, which can exacerbate urinary tract issues and contribute to kidney disease progression. Therefore, incorporating wet food into the diet of cats with kidney disease can be advantageous in supporting overall urinary and kidney health. However, it's essential to consult with a veterinarian to determine the diet plan tailored to the individual cat's stage of kidney disease.

What are some of the best wet food options for cats with kidney disease
Answer

Some of the best wet food options for cats with kidney disease include low-protein "kidney" diets. Carolyn S. shares her experience with her cat Mingo, who was diagnosed with chronic renal failure (CRF) at 18 years old. Mingo's diet primarily consisted of canned food, emphasizing the importance of wet food in a cat's diet to ensure adequate hydration. Unlike dogs, cats are not big drinkers, and a diet rich in wet food helps meet their moisture needs. Carolyn emphasizes the need to prioritize the cat's comfort above all else. She highlighted the importance of making the cat feel safe and loved during treatment. Selecting a wet food option, like Hillโ€™s Science Diet, can help manage kidney disease and improve the cat's quality of life.Reference: https://www.quora.com/What-are-some-of-the-best-wet-food-options-for-cats-with-kidney-disease/answer/Carolyn-S-129?ch=10&oid=389617892&share=61958579&srid=hpmxqX&target_type=answer

What not to feed a cat with kidney disease?
Answer

When managing kidney disease in cats, it's important to avoid feeding high-protein treats like meat, jerky treats, cheese, rawhides, and pig ears. These treats can put additional strain on the kidneys and exacerbate the condition. Furthermore, high-sodium diets should be avoided as they can increase blood pressure and worsen kidney damage. Therefore, it's essential to opt for diets specifically designed for pets with kidney disease, which are formulated to support kidney health. Consulting with a veterinarian for dietary recommendations tailored to the individual cat's needs is crucial for the effective management of kidney disease.

What are the side effects of renal cat food?
Answer

Healthy cats can occasionally eat renal food without serious adverse effects, as noted by Dr. Bethany Hsia, DVM, co-founder of CodaPet. However, they should not consume a consistent renal food diet or be placed on a permanent renal veterinary diet. Renal diets are specifically formulated for cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and contain different ingredient quantities compared to typical cat food. Long-term consumption of renal food by healthy cats can lead to essential nutrient deficiencies due to lower phosphorus and other nutrient levels. Additionally, the lower protein content in renal diets may result in weight loss or muscle wasting in healthy cats. Abruptly transitioning a healthy cat to a renal diet can also cause digestive issues such as vomiting, diarrhea, or decreased appetite. Therefore, it's essential to avoid placing healthy cats on long-term renal diets to prevent nutritional imbalances and other potential health issues.

What is the difference between prescription cat food and regular cat food?
Answer

The main difference between prescription cat food and regular cat food lies in their formulation and intended use. Prescription cat food is specifically tailored for cats with specific health issues, such as kidney disease or urinary tract problems. It contains specialized ingredients and nutrient ratios designed to manage or alleviate the symptoms of these conditions. However, despite its name, prescription cat food does not contain any prescription drugs. In contrast, regular cat food is formulated for general consumption by healthy cats and does not target specific health concerns. You should not feed prescription food to a cat unnecessarily if they do not have the corresponding health issue. Consulting with a veterinarian is essential to determine the most appropriate diet for a cat's specific health needs.

By day seven, you can feed your cat 100% new food.

L
My cat LOVES this!

After losing his BFF to cancer, my lonely senior cat stopped eating completely. After trying everything for two weeks during which he ate a total of about 20 pieces of kibble, my veterinarian sent us home with this as his recent blood test showed the start of kidney disease. I opened this can when we arrived home and my cat gobbled it down. I stopped him at half a can as I was afraid it would be vomited back up since his stomach was unused to food by now. No problems. I gave him the other half about 4 hours later. Again, he gobbled it right up. Must taste great to him because he had not refused it. He's been on it now for about 9 days and he is looking much better and is actually playing with a toy this morning. Hope it helps his kidney disease to not progress further.

My 19yo domestic cat loves this food. She was recently diagnosed with stage 3 liver disease. I just started her on this and a probiotic powder. I'll report back in a while with how her condition reacts to the regimen.

My cat loves it!
VERIFIED PURCHASER

I brought home a sample can of this for my handsome little old man kitty. Based on his reaction you would have thought it was [insert brand name of popular cat food sold in small cans featuring a Persian cat eating out of crystal chalice]. I'm relieved because he wasn't pumped about any other renal diet I've tried. He would eat a couple of bites and walk away. He gobbled this stuff like it was above said food. Everybody wins!!
