Hill's Prescription Diet Logo

The kidney's role is to filter waste and toxins from the blood, and maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. As pets are getting older, damage to kidney tissues may occur. This process is irreversible, and will lead to further loss of kidney function. Renal cats may also experience loss of appetite and their caloric intake might decline, eventually leading to loss of muscle mass. Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians developed Prescription Diet k/d, clinical nutrition to support your cat's kidney function and help sustain muscle mass. In fact, the nutrition of k/d is clinically tested nutrition to improve & lengthen quality of life.

Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Cat Food is a meticulously crafted therapeutic diet designed to address the unique nutritional needs of cats with decreased kidney function. • Irresistible Taste:Made with chicken, the k/d Kidney Care Dry Cat Food offers an irresistible taste that cats find appealing, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients even if their loss of appetite has been a concern.

  • S+OXSHIELD Technology:This formula incorporates S+OXSHIELD technology to minimize the risk of developing struvite and calcium oxalate crystals, promoting urinary health in cats with compromised kidney function.

Is Hill's Prescription Diet for kidney disease in cats?
Answer

Yes, Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Dry Cat Food is specifically formulated to support cats with kidney disease. Kidney disease, also known as renal disease, is a common health issue in cats, particularly as they age. The k/d formula is designed to provide nutrition tailored to the unique needs of cats with compromised kidney function. Cats with kidney disease often experience a decrease in appetite and changes in taste preferences, which can lead to weight loss and muscle wasting. Hill's Prescription Diet k/d is formulated with ingredients to address these concerns. It includes highly digestible proteins to support muscle maintenance and controlled levels of phosphorus to support kidney function. It also contains increased levels of omega-3 fatty acids to support kidney health. According to Wendy Brooks, DVM and owner of Mar Vista Animal Medical Center in Los Angeles, research indicates that pets with kidney failure who take omega-3 fatty acids tend to live longer than those who do not. As a result, many renal diets are now fortified with fish oils to provide this beneficial nutrient.Reference:https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952670

What does K/D food do for cats?
Answer

K/D (Kidney Diet) food for cats serves several crucial purposes in managing feline kidney disease. Firstly, it is formulated to support kidney function by reducing the workload on the kidneys. Cats with kidney issues often struggle to process certain nutrients. K/D food helps by providing a balance of essential nutrients while limiting those that can further stress the kidneys. Additionally, K/D food addresses gastrointestinal changes commonly associated with kidney disease. It helps maintain the health of the intestinal tract, which is vital as kidney dysfunction can affect digestion and nutrient absorption. By supporting gastrointestinal health, K/D food indirectly supports kidney function. Moreover, K/D food is designed to promote muscle mass and energy levels in cats. Cats with kidney disease may experience muscle wasting and fatigue. A diet rich in high-quality proteins and energy sources helps to counteract these effects, ensuring the cat remains strong and active. Another benefit of K/D food is its ability to stimulate appetite. Jamie Case, a DVM from Missouri, says that cats with kidney disease may have a reduced appetite, leading to weight loss and further complications. K/D food is formulated to be highly palatable, encouraging cats to eat and maintain adequate calorie intake, which is crucial for overall well-being.Reference:https://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/urinary/kidney-failure-cats

Can a cat recover from kidney failure?
Answer

Once a cat's kidneys are damaged, they have minimal ability to recover. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) typically progresses slowly, but with proper management, cats can live comfortably for an extended period. Treatment focuses on controlling symptoms and slowing the disease's progression through different measures. This includes things such as a specialized diet, hydration therapy, and medications to manage blood pressure and phosphorus levels. Regular monitoring by a veterinarian is essential to adjust treatments as needed and maintain the cat's quality of life. Although kidney function cannot be fully restored, early detection and diligent management can significantly prolong a cat's lifespan and improve its well-being. C.S. Friedman, a novelist and pet mom, experienced this firsthand with her cat diagnosed with advanced kidney failure at 18 years old. Despite the grim prognosis, Friedman's cat lived until the age of 24. This suggests that while recovery might not be possible, effective management can greatly enhance a cat's quality of life and extend its lifespan. This demonstrates the importance of proactive care and vigilance in such cases.Reference:https://www.quora.com/How-long-will-my-cat-live-with-failing-kidneys

Is renal dry food good for cats?
Answer

Renal dry food, specifically formulated for cats with kidney issues, can indeed be beneficial when included as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. This specialized diet typically contains controlled amounts of high-quality protein, which is crucial for managing kidney disease in cats. The controlled protein levels help minimize the accumulation of waste products in the bloodstream, reducing the workload on the kidneys. Additionally, renal diets often contain restricted amounts of phosphorus and sodium. This can further support kidney function by easing the burden on the kidneys to filter these substances. However, it's essential to note that while renal dry food can be helpful, it shouldnโ€™t be the sole treatment for kidney disease in cats. Alongside dietary management, other aspects of care such as hydration, medication, and regular veterinary check-ups are vital for effectively managing the condition.

What are the signs of cat kidney failure?
Answer

Signs of kidney failure in cats typically manifest gradually and may include various changes in behavior, appearance, and bodily functions. Weight loss is a common indicator, as the kidneys' inability to properly filter waste can lead to muscle wasting and loss of body mass. Poor hair quality often accompanies this weight loss due to malnutrition and decreased grooming habits. Halitosis, or bad breath, can occur as toxins accumulate in the bloodstream and affect oral health. Another noticeable sign is a variable appetite, which may result from mouth ulcers caused by toxins or from nausea associated with kidney dysfunction. Lethargy and depression are also prevalent as the cat's overall health declines. Additionally, increased drinking and urination may occur as the kidneys attempt to flush out toxins, leading to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

My cat does not like the "new formula ."

For years my cat with kidney disease used to gladly eat this product. Even my healthy cat would sneak in to catch a few nibbles when I wasn't looking. Since this last change in the formula, neither cat wants anything to do with it! Please, what ever you've done, change it back!

Great flavor
VERIFIED PURCHASER

I received a sample pack with 2 dry favors & 2 can flavors from my vet. Both cats loved the Ocean Fish flavor dry the best. I didn't realize the vet didn't carry it in stock so kitties are eating the chicken flavor and seem to have gotten used to it. It will do until the Ocean Fish comes in. Both cats have been more active and feeling much better than they had for a long, long time. I will continue to purchase this dry food for my cats.

Kitties Like the Taste
VERIFIED PURCHASER

My older kitty was prescribed this by our vet and the clinic said it is OK for my younger old kitty to eat too. They love the taste and I like the fact that it is not crumbly. I also like the Velcro closure on the bag, No other dry cat food I know of has sealed closures on bags and this really helps in keeping the food fresh and clean. I wish it was more chewy, though. Such hard pellets are hard for kitties to chew (they're not horses, you know! Their little teeth are not made for grinding kibble). I wish you would fix your website so that when I do a search for a specific product I would be taken to that product and not to the whole selection that I have to scroll to find my product. I also wish you would post the reviews in order, most recent first, instead of the random arrangement you are using now. I want recent review of cat foods, not reviews that are 3 ... 2 ... 3... 2... years old, in no chronological order or even order by number of stars.

Had to start feeding my oldest kitty this food due to early stage kidney issues. Kinda hard to feed one cat one kind of food and feed the other another so I just feed it to both of them. They are both very happy and healthy!
