What are suitable dietary options for cats in the early stages of kidney disease?
Answer

For cats with early kidney disease, a diet that supports kidney health is crucial. Look for specially formulated foods such as Royal Canin Renal Support, Hill's Prescription Diet k/d, or Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diet NF. These diets are low in phosphorus and high in quality protein, designed to ease the workload on the kidneys. Wet canned food, like Wellness CORE Grain-Free, is often recommended because it provides extra hydration, which is beneficial for kidney function. Additionally, foods with added omega-3 fatty acids, such as the Blue Buffalo Natural Veterinary Diet, can help reduce inflammation and support kidney health. Consult with your veterinarian for specific recommendations tailored to your cat's needs. They might suggest prescription diets or supplements like Iams Veterinary Formula Renal Plus to further manage the condition. It's also essential to ensure your cat has access to fresh water at all times to support their kidney function and overall health.

Is there a link between dry cat food and kidney problems?
Answer

According to a Licensed Veterinary Technician from Las Vegas, Holly Rivney, dry cat food does not directly cause kidney problems on its own. Kidney disease in cats is often associated with inadequate water intake. If a cat does not consume about a cup of water or more per day, Rivney suggests switching to canned food. Canned food typically contains about 72% water, providing extra hydration for cats. Most premium cat foods are formulated with a balanced mix of essential nutrients such as taurine, Omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, phosphorus, and others. She notes that these nutrients are also important for overall feline health, including kidney function. Additionally, the quality of the water a cat drinks can play a role. If a cat's only water source is high in minerals and very hard, it is more prone to developing blockages in the ureters. The ureters are the tubules that run from the kidney to the bladder. In contrast, reverse osmosis or particle-filtered water might be less likely to contribute to these blockages.Reference: https://www.quora.com/Does-dry-cat-food-cause-kidney-problems/answer/Holly-Rivney?ch=10&oid=331043494&share=ff0369c7&srid=cJoNY&target_type=answer

Is it sufficient to only feed a cat dry food?
Answer

It's not recommended to just feed a cat dry food. Tina Owens from Japan shared her harrowing experience with her male cat, Doofus. He became "blocked," unable to pee due to crystals in his urinary tract caused by dry food. She found him with a distended belly, his bladder swollen dangerously. She rushed him to the vet, and they inserted a catheter to relieve the pressure, saving Doofus's life. Later, he needed surgery to reconstruct his urethra due to muscle damage. Tina then switched to Science Diet Urinary Care for Cats and Friskies wet food, which helped him stay healthy. This event emphasizes the vital role of a balanced diet, including wet food, in preventing urinary issues and maintaining a cat's well-being.Reference: https://www.quora.com/Is-it-OK-to-just-feed-a-cat-dry-food-My-mom-seems-to-be-against-wet-food/answer/Tina-Owens-4?ch=10&oid=102931634&share=8c6d8ea4&srid=cJoNY&target_type=answer

At what age do cats get kidney disease?
Answer

Cats typically develop kidney disease as they age, with the risk increasing as they enter their senior years. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, chronic kidney disease is mainly a concern for mature and senior cats aged seven years and older. This condition affects an estimated 30-40% of cats over 10 years old and a staggering 81% of cats over 15 years old. However, it is relatively uncommon in cats younger than three years old, with only about 10% of cases occurring in this age group.

What are the key reasons for kidney failure in cats?
Answer

Toxins, especially lilies, can cause acute kidney failure in cats- even pollen on their coat can be dangerous. Antifreeze is another toxin to be wary of. Some cat breeds, like those with polycystic kidney disease, are predisposed to early kidney failure. On the other hand, chronic kidney insufficiency is often linked to dental disease, as noted by Veterinarian Ron Gaskin from Shakopee, Minnesota. Bacterial embolisms from dental issues can lead to kidney tissue damage over time, decreasing kidney function. Ron emphasizes the importance of feeding cats an obligate carnivore's diet for their health and longevity. He points out concerns about high-carbohydrate levels in dry kibble. He believes these can lead to feline inflammatory syndrome and contribute to conditions like chronic kidney disease (CKD). Additionally, it can cause inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), obesity, and type II diabetes in cats. No Nutrition Label and Cats won't touch it

This product was one of the products recommended to me for my cat who developed quick and severe renal failure after undergoing anesthesia for a dental cleaning and extraction. We did all of the blood work and ECG to ensure she was healthy enough to under go the procedure, but she still had a bad reaction to it, so we found ourselves having to switch her diet to a kidney friendly diet and give her subcutaneous fluids every other day so far. She will not touch this or the wet food version, no matter what flavor I buy. And, given it seems like I can only purchase these in large quantities online or at a pet store with prescription, I could not try them out first, and now it has been so much money between the vet visits and the prescription diet food that even my other cats won't touch. ( I don't willingly give it to them, but they even snubbed their nose at it when walking by my other kitties dish, which they NEVER do!). I would also do anything for my kitties, it is just very disappointing that the flavor or whatever is in this is not desirable by my medically needy kitty. :( I also cannot find a label on the package or online that lists the protein and phosphorous levels....weird.

Where's the 8.5 lb option?

This food is really expensive, buying a larger bag makes it a bit more affordable in the long run. My vet said you can order larger bag online... was it discontinued?? Having only a 4 lb option is ridiculous. My cat eats the food. Isn't in love with it but he doesn't reject it either.

Very tasty!

My cat is 15 years old and has been diagnosed with early kidney disease. I started ordering this kibble for her over a year ago and I must say that, right from the beginning, she absolutely loves to eat it!

yes

I have only begun feeding this food to my cat so i really isn't much to say, except, I wish they made the morsels smaller and flatter. My cat has a hard time chewing them because they are so hard. She is a senior cat recently diagnosed with ckd. She must eat this food. Please make it easier for cats like her to chew

Did they change the formula. My cat refuses to eat it

My cat liked the first bag. And now refuses to eat it. I had to switch to wet food.

Don't purchase!

My cat is in the early stages of kidney disease and her vet has prescribed this food. She has always eaten everything I have fed her, so she is not picky at all! Unfortunately she does not like this food and when I tried to slowly introduce this food, she started by eating around it and later stopped eating all together until I served only her old food. This is a huge disappointment! This food is about 4 times the amount of her regular food. What a waste of money!!
