Is the Pit Bull right for you?

  • 1 The Pit Bull dog is one of the most controversial breeds, but not for good reason.
  • 2 With the proper training applied to Pit Bull puppies from a young age they are as gentle and obedient as any other dog.
  • 3 Pit Bull dogs need regular exercise and training.

HISTORY

A cross between English and American terriers and bulldogs, the American Pit Bull Terrier is believed to resemble more closely the Bulldog of yore than either of the two genuine breeds of today. A relatively new breed, the American Pit Bull Terrier has quickly gained a reputation as a tenacious and oftentimes violent breed, even though many of these accusations are unfounded and even in the instances where they are true, the blame lies with the owner and not the dog.

Appearance

One look at an American Pit Bull Terrier and you can tell you are dealing with one mighty breed. They may not be the biggest dogs, but pound for pound, they are some of the strongest dogs on earth. They can grow to be up to 22 inches tall and fall somewhere between 22 - 110 pounds. They have a very wide frame like a bulldog, and same goes for their head, which houses some of the most powerful jaws in the canine world. Their ears are typically cropped, but not always.
