HISTORY

The younger cousin to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was thought to be a cross, with the inclusion of Swedish Vallhund, Schipperke, and other Spitz-type breeds. Taking their name from the town they were first bred in, Pembrokeshire, these dogs quickly became the favored dog of Queen Elizabeth II and are now regarded as a royal breed. Originally a breed designed to herd cattle, they have a tendency to herd and nip. They were first recognized by the AKC in 1934 (a year before their elder cousin, the Cardigan).

Personality

A friendly, bold, bright, funny breed, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is naturally loyal and protective of their family. They can be wary of strangers, so socialization should be done early to help curb their protective tendencies. Ample barkers, these dogs make for great watch dogs. They also take instruction very well, making obedience training a walk in the park. This is an active breed, but because of their size, they can get all the exercise they need with a few daily walks and some playing inside. .

Color

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi can come in sable, red, fawn, black or tan, with white markings on any of the aforementioned colors.

Health Concerns

Health concerns with Pembroke Welsh Corgis are:

Appearance

The Pembroke, like their Cardigan cousin, look like a medium sized dog that someone slapped tiny dog legs on. They have a smaller head than the Cardigan, with a foxier looking muzzle, but they have the same wide, low body, and large, pointed ears. Their tiny legs are short, but can propel them surprisingly quickly, since they were originally used for the herding of cattle. Also, thanks to their farming background, they have a powerful muzzle as well.
