Physicist, screenwriter, and cat breeder Paul Casey is credited with the development of the California Spangled Cat. Bred to look like a miniature Leopard in an attempt to increase awareness of the poaching of their full sized relative, the California Spangled took eleven long years, and a large amount of cross-breeding, to create. Part British Shorthair, Egyptian Feral Cat, Spotted Manx, Siamese, and many more, the California Spangled is one of the best examples of designer breeding.

The California Spangled Cat is a cheerful, kind breed that loves to follow around their people and play for hours. A highly intelligent breed, the Spangle is a natural hunter and easily distracted by moving objects. The California Spangled can be found with a number of different base colorings, from bronze, gold, blue, or brown, each having the same trademark leopard spotting on top.

Designed to look like a miniature leopard, the California Spangled is an athletic, toned, elegant breed, and has the same spotted fur patterning of the real thing. They have an expressive, chiseled face, with high cheekbones, and bright, almond shaped eyes.
