HISTORY

Originally known as the Domestic Shorthair, the American Shorthair was brought to North America by settlers from Europe as rat-catchers on their ships. Once in America, these cats flourished. They quickly became more than just mousing cats once their mild temperament became well known. After years of crossbreeding with other pedigrees, the American Shorthair of today can be found with all different types of coat pattern and color, but purists can still find cats with the original characteristics.

The traditional American Shorthair has a somewhat flat face and a medium sized body.
