The German Rex is one of the oldest of all the Rex type cats, tracing their roots back to a curly haired cat named Munk, who was the son of an Angora cat and a Russian Blue. This German cat became widely known for his unique curly coat, and was a prolific breeder for his entire life (1930-1945), spreading his curly haired genes across his village of origin. While the breed did hit a slump in the ‘70s, the German Rex is regaining numbers thanks to the efforts of some dedicated breeders in Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Denmark, and Holland.

The German Rex is a typically friendly and playful cat. They get along like gangbusters with kids and other pets alike, making the transition into a new home easier for them than it can be with other breeds. Also, the German Rex is a naturally intelligent breed, capable of learning tricks, and more than happy entertaining themselves. They are incredibly loyal, but do not require constant attention.

At first glance, the most notable feature of the German Rex is their wooly coat, curly to the point of wanting to knit a sweater out of it. They are average in size and build, with a round head and large ears. Their whiskers also have a slight curl to them.
