The German Rex is one of the oldest of all the Rex type cats, tracing their roots back to a curly haired cat named Munk, who was the son of an Angora cat and a Russian Blue. This German cat became widely known for his unique curly coat, and was a prolific breeder for his entire life (1930-1945), spreading his curly haired genes across his village of origin. While the breed did hit a slump in the โ€˜70s, the German Rex is regaining numbers thanks to the efforts of some dedicated breeders in Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Denmark, and Holland.
