Elizabeth Morris established the shelter in 1874, and at the time it was the first facility in the U.S. to care for cats. The namesake of the organization, Morris was one of the nation's pioneers in animal welfare. After more than 135 years of serving local pets who had been abandoned, the Morris Animal Refuge has yet to turn a single animal away from its doors.The facility's adoption services covers the Greater Philadelphia Pennsylvania Region, includingย New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. By casting such a wide net, the Morris Animal Refuge takes in animals of all shapes and species. From felines to dogs and other small animals, the dedicated volunteers make sure that each and every pet is healthy and comfortable during the length of their stay.The Morris Animal Refugeย continues to operate today in Center City Philadelphia by a small staff whose primary duties involves basic animal care, adoption processing and humane education for the general public. They'll even work additional hours to support all phases of intake and fundraising for the organization.
